Savage Nature
The importance of place in American painting 1910-1960 August 2016 Quidley & Ctompany Nantucket curated by Jamie LaFleur
During the dawn of the 20th century Europe remained the focal point of avant-garde painting; however by 1910 American painters began the march towards abstract expressionism and the first entirely original American art form. Savage Nature will explore the importance of the New England landscape and seascape from post-impressionist paintings by artist such as Rockwell Kent, and Jane Peterson through modernist paintings by Walt Kuhn, and John Marin, until finally arriving at the abstract expressionist works of Hans Hoffman, Stephan Pace, and others. Through the work of these diverse painters Savage Nature will explore the common thread of place and how the New England environment shaped the American Art.
