he furnace hasn’t kicked on yet, at least not during the day. And I haven’t yet started the woodstove. But first thing in the morning these days, I’m starting to look around for a sweater to grab; I need that extra layer to keep me cozy through the coffee hour. If there’s anything I love, it’s a sweater over my PJ’s. That’s why I’m especially fond of the three pieces here, all of which could be poised on top of the piles on my bedroom chair, ready to pull on immediately after the blankets come off. I’d start with Sugarloaf, a cardigan by Melissa LaBarre that, if needed, could easily do duty becomingly as a robe. It’s the perfect post-coverlet cover up. It’s long (yes, good) and has a deep border worked in a ladder knit-and-purl pattern. Everything else is simple stockinette—so bring on the movies. An inch or so of garter stitch keeps the edges tidy. Another good thing: Sugarloaf is worked in Lark, a soft, pliable, ever-so-worsted, worsted weight yarn. Next on would be Bristol Ivy’s Sunday River, a slightly oversized pair of slipper socks to pad around in. Bristol used a neat little slip-stitch pattern for the body of the socks. Slip stitches are great for durability and warmth, and they’re an ingenious way to get a little more density without making things stiff. The yarn is Phoebe, our lofty, cloud-like, almost-a-hand-dyed dk weight. Finally, to wear all day, really, is Cecily Glowik MacDonald’s Ossipee, a wrap in the true meaning of the word. Wide enough to amply cover the shoulders, long enough to wrap and drape from the neck. Ossipee could go from indoors to out in a jiffy. In my house, it would never get far; I’d keep it within easy reach.
