Fall. Warm days still rule, but it’s the end of summer. We feel it. Something about the afternoon slant of light through trees, the breeze through tired leaves and the scents it carries, the thinning of the cricket chorus. The leaves fade, the sunlit evenings shrink. We move into the final days of nature’s cycle, the dying days. But we don’t mind the shriveled garden, the vacant trees. We know that ends are necessary for new beginnings. So we prepare for the cold, the dark, the quiet and peace of winter and the return of things we’re fond of. Squash is new again in the market, and soup is back on the stove. Scarves and hats are discovered in forgotten baskets tucked away in the dark or wherever they hibernated during the summer. If you’re a knitter, this is your season. You hold a ball of wool to your nose, close your eyes and inhale. You settle yourself with a cup of tea, you pick up your needle and cast on a row. You remember the pleasure of forming stitches, of making something warm and pretty. We know you have piles of patterns and boxes of yarn to return to. But consider leaving those where they are for the moment and starting off the season with one of the pieces here: Svana, a fresh take on Fair Isle knitting, Alba, a cheerful pom-pom-topper, Helga, a simple tunic with pointy hood to keep you cozy, and Gretel, a breezy open cardigan, bordered in traditional knit/purl patterns. Knit them up and take a walk in the woods.
