asic black.
Never grows old, does it. And does anyone think that spring has to be about white and pastels? Not that these pieces wouldn’t look wonderful in white or a pretty color, but for a change, we love the cool, crisp look of black right now. Yes, we do. And, of course, we love linen. In Kestrel, our linen ribbon, textures pop, as you can see in Leila Raabe’s Deschain (opposite) where a curving lace panel, somewhat Victorian in feel, looks distinctly modern centered on a wide, cropped top. And see, too, how Kestrel defines the petal-and-garter stitch pattern on my simple, open cardigan, Rhea (page 26). Lace patterns are a natural in Sparrow, our classic, round linen yarn. Isabell Kraemer ran tidy stripes of eyelet lace at the yoke and bottom edge of her breezy sleeveless top, Cullum (page 6). And Leila placed a crisp, repeating diamond pattern down the center of Gilead, her 3/4 sleeve pullover (page 16). At the minimlist end of the spectrum, Melissa LaBarre’s ultra-simple Sparrow tunic, Raven (page 20), with pockets, couldn’t be more welcome. Cool, practical, and easyfitting.

pam allen Pam Allen has worked as a knitwear designer, editor at Interweave Knits, and creative director at Classic Elite Yarns. In 2010 she launched Quince & Co with the idea of sourcing fiber and spinning yarns in the US. The company began with four classic wool yarns in 37 colors. Today the ‘basics’ line comes in 63 colors and Quince now makes and sells twelve yarns originating in the US and two organic linen yarns from Italy. And there’s always an idea in the works. website: quinceandco.com ravelry: pamallen instagram: quinceandco

isabell kraemer Isabell Kraemer describes herself as “chaotic, sometimes nerve-wracking, tiny, cluttered with laughter lines, all-loving, creative, with never enough time to get all the ideas out of my head, always sketching, and a lover of all things related to fashion.” She lives in a small, medieval town in southwest Germany. Her aim is to design everyday items for modern knitters—casual with a little twist. She’s addicted to stripes and seamless construction. She doesn’t mind seaming, but likes the fit-as-you-go aspect of top-down knitting. website: owlsisters.blogspot.com ravelry: lilalu instagram: lilalu72
