ome things never get old. That’s one of the things we remember when we knit.
Take, for example, the lovelies in this small collection. They could have been knitted a long time ago; they pull from the knitting and wearing traditions of cold northern climates, knitting in the years before polar fleece and other man-made techno-fibers tried to keep us warm. That said, these pieces are as modern as your smart phone. Dianna Walla’s Dalis, a classic round-yoke pullover with pretty colorwork patterns, makes me want to run for my needles. I love the Scandinavian-winter blue palette with accents of yellow. And I can easily imagine the sweater in other colorways, maybe with a darker background—Caspian, say, with warm rust and aqua splashes. Riva, Dianna’s hat and mitts in Fjord, lettered with crisp white and yellow patterns, are forever wearable. Eye-catching for interest, but sensible and quiet in their appeal, like all good designs should be. Bristol Ivy’s round-yoke Icelandic-style sweater, Brooke, is traditional in silhouette, but innovative in the particulars. Instead of color work, she’s used a texture pattern, only knits and purls, to adorn the yoke. Raised diamond patterns taper as they approach the neck to mimic the changing scale of the yoke. Tidy, that. Finally, she uses the contrast between garter and stockinette stitch to draw a grand half-star on Finna, her warm and cozy triangular shawl/wrap. It’s just the right size to snuggle up in. So cozy. So practical. So pretty.
