Slip stitches are a great, easy way to work with more than one color. Sure, stripes are always fun and fair isle is fantastic, but sometimes you want something different. This is where slip stitches come in! Each color is worked on a separate row, but with the slipping of stitches every other row, your fabric creates the illusion that you’re working a complicated stitch pattern. It’s a beautiful secret how effortless it is. The colors I chose in this collection are an ode to winter. I love these pale heather grays, Iceland and Kumlien’s Gull. And recently Quince’s addition of the brown heathers introduced Audouin—a perfect pale, warm brown. Choosing some of the darker grays, such as Sabine and Kittywake, would be stunning, too, giving a dark, smoky effect to your knits. And try adding a touch of color, too. Bird’s Egg or Clay are always pretty mixed with shades of gray.

The slipped stitches in this particular stitch pattern float on the right side of the yoke to create a bit of texture. For the palette, I chose colors that are close to each other in value for a soft, subtlely variegated yoke. 8

For the cowl version of Harriet, I used the same slip-stitch pattern, but swapped Egret for Iceland as the main color. By varying the background color, you create pieces that relate to each other without matching too much. 12

Heidi Pullover yarn: chickadee colors: kumlien’s gull audouin

In the Heidi pullover, I used a slip-stitch pattern that has a smooth surface, and one that makes a neat, allover pattern. I kept the yoke patterning abbreviated; it ends before the underarm begins and gives the sweater a bit of a funnel neck to snuggle your chin. 16

I used three colors in this cap for a subtle tweedy effect and to make it slightly different from its sister sweater. In soft Chickadee, the hat is cozy and comfortable to wear.
