Pre-Quince

Photoshoot By: Jessica Bahena

WHEN YOU HIRE A PHOTOGRAPHER,

sometimes you think you only need him there for the day of your Quinceanera. However, you should ask him or her if they do individual photo shoots and see if they could include that in your package?

An individual photo shoot gives you the opportunity to dress up, have professional pictures outside of your dress (if you want) and you can use those pictures on your invitation or as part of your decorations. The pictures don’t have to be anything formal, they can be playful, casual, and an important part of the experience to help prepare you for being in front of the camera that day. Schedule a couple of hours when you can go to their studio or a park and take a variety of pictures to choose from!

Flower Power By: Jessica Bahena

There’s an indescribable BEAUTY AND ELEGANCE about fresh flowers. They have the ability to express love, friendship, condolences, and so many other things. Flowers are always a nice touch to a quinceanera, whether it is your ramo, decorations for the church or the reception.

Here are some tips to pick the best flowers for your party:

What makes you smile?

There’s always a flower that just makes you feel happy. Maybe it reminds you of a happy time or a special person.

What’s in season? If you’re quince is in the summer or the winter? Different flowers bloom at different times of the year, so that has a lot to do with price. If they’re in season, they will be less expensive What goes with your décor and theme? Talk to your florist and tell him or her what colors

your party will be, and ask for their professional advice on flowers, and what kind of arrangement they can make for you

Pick a color that will give contrast.

Don’t be too matchy matchy, example: pink dress, pink flowers, and pink table cloths. Instead pick something that will pop like yellow! Work with your florero and be open to their suggestions, they know all about flowers!

Traditions You Can’t Forget Yes, we live in a modern world where practically everything is digital and we do things differently BUT traditions are traditions. A quinceanera itself is a tradition that celebrates a girl transforming in to a young lady. Although the white quince dress is not a requirement anymore, here are 5 traditions you can’t skip!

THE CEREMONY: After all this is a religious acknowledgement to God, and to be thankful to have made it to this next chapter in life.

YOUR FIRST DANCE WITH YOUR DAD: Your dad has been waiting for this day for 15 years. Be sure to give him the first dance, practice, and pick a meaningful song. LA MUNECA:

This is symbolism for not only you leaving your childhood, but also a beautiful keepsake and memory

A BRINDIS WITH YOUR PARENTS: Always remember to thank your parents and guests publicly

PRESENTING YOUR PADRINOS: Whether they are mentioned during your entrance or during the brindis, make sure to thank your padrinos for all of their input Every quinceanera is different, and while some of you might value tradition, others may want to be rebellious and do things differently.

Try to find a balance between modern and classic, follow your heart and stay true to the culture.

Thrift Shopping, Have You Tried It?

From FashionBlog www.withjessica.com

For those who think that thrifting is for the “lower class”, the poor, or the desperate, you are MISSING OUT! Growing up I never stepped foot in a thrift store, not because we were rich or “too good”, my mom simply didn’t have the patience (or time) to search.

As an adult, I would occasionally go to the Goodwill for the final touches to my Halloween costume, and this past year I dressed as Hermione (Harry Potter) and found my entire school girl outfit at a thrift store and that’s when I realized how many name brands and one of a kind pieces lay on those racks. Ever since then, I am ADDICTED! I have found designer names from Juicy Couture, J.Crew, Top Shop and Chinese Laundry to name a few. Plus brands like Abercrombie, American Eagle, Old Navy and New York & Co. Sometimes I find some really great no-names, literally one of a kind pieces with no labels. When I tell people that I bought it at a second hand store (I’m not ashamed) people are always in shock. Tops, shorts, pants, skirts, dresses.

I’ve been asked repeatedly for my best tips, so here they are: 1. GO ONE SECTION AT A TIME. Start with the item that you are really hoping to find. Find your size, look through those and allow yourself to glance at the items 1-2 sizes smaller and larger. You would be surprised. Remember these things have already been broken in. 2. GO TO WHAT CALLS YOU. It may

be a color, a print, a texture. If you feel more comfortable only picking brands you know, then look at each label.

3. BE OPEN MINDED. Not everything has

to be designer. Labels mean nothing if you don’t have style. I once found a 100% Black vintage no-name leather pencil skirt for $4!!!

4. DON’T BE A SNOB. The reality is, while for some of us this may be a hobby, some people are less fortunate, and you never know what anyone in there is going through. No rude comments or stare downs. We are all equal, be kind, be humble.

5. CREATIVITY AND IMAGINATION GO A LONG WAY. If you wanted to wear what

everyone else was wearing, you would be shopping where everyone else is shopping. Not only do you save a ton of money by thrifting, you find treasures that no one else has. I like to imagine where I would wear it. Also sometimes we might let a classic piece go because it’s “damaged”. It may be missing a button or look dull. It could easily be spruced up with a little DIY project. Add studs, sparkle, a new hem etc. But hey, remember some stuff is just helpless, don’t forget your fashion morale.

6. DON’T GIVE UP, don’t limit yourself

Happy hunting my friends, I hoped this helped. Remember my golden rule: NEVER DISCRIMINATE AGAINST GOOD CLOTHES. Let me know what treasures you find! Have fun! Love, JB.

to one location, and be patient! I’ve found some really expensive pieces at thrift stores that were in not so great neighborhoods, and I’ve found nothing at some fancier places. Be persistent and have three go to spots. Three. Something’s gotta give, and each location has different things.

Day Make Up VS.

Night Make Up By: Jessica Bahena

Day time make up consists of lighter colors and a more natural look. Think of light browns and pinks with a fine line of eyeliner on the top lid. Lipgloss, tinted moisturizer, or a lighter shade of lipstick. Also, a light sweep of blush is the perfect touch. This make up is ideal for when you go to school, breakfast with the family, or are having a shopping day.

Night time make up consists of a darker more dramatic look. Think of dark browns, grays, and eyeliner on the top and inner lid. Lips can be a brighter shade or a darker shade depending on how dark your eye make up is. A popular trend right now is a nude lip with a smokey eye. You can add a darker blush or bronzer for definition of your cheekbones. This look is perfect for going out to dinner, a party or a night out. Knowing the difference between these two looks is crucial, because you don’t want to appear to be wearing too much make up during the day or not be able to see your make up at night. Experiment with make up, but remember sometime less is more!

What to Look for

in a Make Up Artist By: Jessica Bahena

A MAKEUP ARTIST is a professional or talented individual who can apply makeup not only on you, but also on your damas, mom or madrinas for your Quinceanera. There are many to choose from, whether they are specially trained or aspiring freelance.

MUA’s. Here is a checklist to

help you pick the right one: Is he/she experienced? Whether her techniques are professional training she learned in a class or does her talent come from practice and YouTube videos?

have a portfolio?

Does he/she Does she do her make up well and have pictures of other Quinceaneras she’s done? How do they look?

feel comfortable

with Do you him/her? Did she make a good impression on you? Do you think she will make you feel you’re most beautiful that day? What kind of makeup does she use?

QUALITY PRODUCTS THAT WILL BE GOOD ON YOUR SKIN AND LAST ALL DAY? Is she sanitary and Be picky with your makeup artist and remember, it’s not always about price. Sometimes we try to save money and let a friend or a cousin who may know how to do their make up well, but that doesn’t make them a professional. Let them do your make up some other time, not your quince. Remember this make up needs to last all day, through tears, laughing and sweat!

Photos by Aaron Martinez

Be a Good Dama By: Jessica Bahena

So, you were picked to be someone’s dama! Congratulations! You were chosen because you’re someone very special to them! Now you have some dama duties, getting your dress, practicing a dance, and showing up right? Right! The QUINCEANERA has a lot going on right now, lots of decisions to be made, lots of stress and maybe she’s a little nervous, and she could use a good wing-woman by her side! But besides doing the obvious, here are three ways you can be a good dama and she will love you even more!

Photo By: Aaron Martinez / San Diego

STAY POSITIVE: if she asks for your advice or tells you about how stressed she is about… be supportive, be a good listener and help her keep a cool head

Be drama free: don’t be the dramatic dama who doesn’t get along with the others or is always saying something negative. Remember it’s not about you this time.

Be someone she can count on: If you say you’re going to do something,

do it, even if it seems like a minor thing, keep your word and be responsible.

Don’t compete: Let someone else be the one getting all of the attention for once, this day is all about her, and yes you’re important too, but just try to blend in, just once!

DO EVERYTHING YOU CAN to make her feel special, hold her bouquet, fix her dress, hold her lip gloss, and tell her how beautiful she looks! That’s your job.

Decisions, Decisions… By: Adrianna Unzueta - Chicago

You just graduated from grade school, and besides deciding which high school to attend; your next big decision is deciding whether or not to have a quinceañera! It seems as if everywhere you go, you are being bombarded with everything related to the grand celebration.

Everyone is asking you if you are having one, you feel like you’ve attended dozens of quince expos, and all of your BFF’s cannot stop talking about their big day. Trust me, I know this can all be overwhelming. However, after being in you shoes, I’m here to tell you exactly why you SHOULD have a quinceañera! Turning 15 is a huge milestone in any girl’s life, and what better way to celebrate than with an extravagant and traditional party. This is an opportunity to let yourself shine while getting more in touch with your culture. A quinceañera is all about the tradition. This is your chance for you to thank God for his blessings and have your entire family celebrate your womanhood with a fun and festive fiesta. One of the biggest turn-offs about a quince is the stress that comes with. Your parents may be persuading you not to have one or bribing you with your dream car or a lavish vacation. Although these bribes seem pretty convincing at the time, having a quinceañera is a once in a lifetime opportunity, unlike buying a car or going to the beach. They may also be worrying about the expenses. But believe me, with proper planning; a quince is affordable for any budget. Having a quinceañera is a beautiful experience that will leave you with lifetime memories. Whether you decide to have a luxurious party or a humble celebration, it will, without a doubt, be an unforgettable experience that I promise you will not regret!

A photo shoot is an opportunity for you express yourself, tell a story, and allows you to get comfortable in front of a camera. So the photographer is picked, the day is scheduled and now you’re asking yourself What Do I Wear?

Here are some ideas to hopefully inspire an outfit: Something Solid Bright colors Seasonal, is your quince in the winter or summer? Something dressy Something casual Lots of accessories

A bright lipstick Not too matchy matchy Your favorite heels Hat or headband Something blingy Use a prop: umbrella, flower, or something that shows a hobby

Not too short or low cut Something you wouldn’t normally wear A cool print or texture A flowy dress A statement necklace

You can literally wear anything you want as long as you feel confident and comfortable, but be creative and have fun!

Skin Care: Easy as 1, 2, 3. By: Jessica Bahena www.withjessica.com

Taking care of your skin is an important daily activity that every woman should do. Beautiful skin is something that translates in every culture and language. Although genetics and different skin types come in to play, making our skin less than perfect, here is a 1, 2, 3 process to make sure you keep your face clean!

1 Cleanse:

It’s important to cleanse your skin daily to remove dirt, oil, and dead skin flakes. Washing your skin also rids the skin of excess oil, which can prevent acne. .To remove eye make-up, especially waterproof mascara, there are products specifically formulated for the eye area. But some gentle facial cleansers can effectively remove eye and facial makeup, as well as cleanse the skin. Remember, just because it looks and smells pretty doesn’t mean it’s the best choice. Pick something gentle and exfoliating.

2 tone:

Tone: A toner is an astringent liquid applied to the skin to reduce oiliness and improve its condition. It is extremely important not to get a harsh astringent that burns when you put it on. Toners can help even out skin tone, erase dark spots, and help skin that’s prone to breakouts. Simply apply a toner to a cotton pad, and apply to your face after you cleanse it.

3 moisturize:

A moisturizer makes sure that your face doesn’t feel tight or dry. Dry skin is the main cause of wrinkles. A light moisturizer can help give you a nice glow and keep your skin looking fresh.

Starting to plan your quince is so exciting; you’re shopping for different vendors,

invitations, and flowers and of course, choosing the perfect date! A date that all of your guests can attend and maybe plan they’re traveling. Don’t get so caught up in the planning that you accidently schedule it on a National Holiday or other event. You want to be considerate of other people’s beliefs and special days.

Whether you consider yourself to be a talented dancer or a not so talented dancer, there’s one thing QM still recommends: A Choreographer. A choreographer can not only customize a dance just for you, but also make sure that everyone is on the same page, the DJ, your corte and your parents. Hire a professional with experience!

Here are 5 reasons why you need a choregrapher: They can customize a dance all about you, with special lifts or turns They can teach your corte de honor how to dance and keep them organized They can teach you a formal valz or something modern They can provide music to you and the DJ at your party They can provide special effects like smoke, lighting or costume ideas

What Cake

flavor

Should You Pick? By: Jessica Bahena

Amongst all of the decisions you will have to make for your Quinceanera, cake is often one of the decisions we often take short cuts on. We don’t do enough research on bakeries, we don’t have taste testings and we go based on someone else’s recommendation. Then when we cut the cake and serve it, we’re disappointed when it’s too dry, not the right flavor, or has too much frosting.

Take control of your cake and decide what flavor YOU would like, here’s how to decide: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE FLAVOR? Think of your birthday cake when you turned 5. WHAT’S THE BAKER’S SPECIALTY? Ask them. What are they most known for? WHAT’S THE LEAST EXPECTED? Something unique.

Your guests will look forward

Photos by Marco Vinicio

to not only a beautiful cake, but a great tasting one. Don’t focus too much on what it looks like more than the taste. Otherwise, what’s the point right? End the night on a good note with a delicious piece of cake, and when in doubt, add more layers!

How to Give and Receive Compliments By: Jessica Bahena

A

compliment is polite expression of praise or admiration. When someone gives you a sincere compliment, it is meant to make you feel special and good about yourself. It is similar to gift-giving, you don’t just give compliments, but also know how to receive them. The ability to be able to say something positive or nice to someone not only shows poise, it shows extreme confidence

within yourself. If you feel good enough about yourself, it makes it easy to allow someone else to feel good as well. On the other hand, the ability to receive a compliment shows just as much poise and self confidence. As mentioned earlier, compliments are like gifts. What if you bought someone something special for their birthday, you wrap it and finally find the right time to give it to them.

Photo by Marco Vinicio / Phoenix AZ

Then, when they receive it, they act like they don’t need it or like they don’t deserve it. It would seem rude right? Here are some tips to not only be a good compliment giver, but also a good compliment receiver:

•Be Specific: Instead of saying I like those

pants, say those pants look great on you!

•Be Sincere: Compliments can be the

start of a conversation with a stranger or new friendship if they feel like you really mean it.

AS YOUNG WOMEN we have to stick together and build each other up, not bring someone down. A sincere compliment or a rude comment could really make a difference in someone’s day!

•Don’t hold back: If you think something nice, say it! Maybe she needs to hear it.

•Say Thank You: That is it. Don’t feel

like you need to compliment back or say something to take the attention off of you. Just accept it, smile and move on.

•Don’t fish for compliments: Don’t

say something negative about yourself so that someone can say something nice to “uplift you” it shows weakness and insecurity and no one likes a fisher. Candy Photography / Seattle WA

Here are three ways to help you study after reading the Driver’s Manual and pass your permit test on the first try:

01

Make flash cards- on one write a challenging question, and on the back write the answer. Flash cards make it easy to study on the go, during lunch, or have someone in your family quiz you.

02 Watch YouTube Videos- We all know YouTube can teach

you anything from make up application to tying a tie. Why not help you study for your permit? This technique is most effective for auditory learners, meaning you learn best by hearing it instead of seeing it.

03

Practice Tests online- there are plenty of practice quizzes online through the DMV, this is effective because it shows you the style of questions you may see on the exam as well as provides you with multiple choice.

Driving on major roadways is a lot of responsibility; you must consider the safety of yourself and others. Studying for the driver’s permit test is vital and you shouldn’t take it lightly. The sooner you get your permit, the sooner you can practice and learn to drive on your own! Good luck chicas!

You may have a lot of options to pick from as your chambelanes or you may have to recruit because you don’t have very many guy friends or cousins for that matter! Whatever your case may be, it is crucial to make the right choice when it comes to picking the boys that will not only be a part of one of the most important days of your life, but also in every picture forever… and ever…and ever…

Let’s go over your Chambelan Checklist: Is he reliable? Will he be there on time and keep his word, or will you be let down? Is he fun/outgoing? Will he get along with the rest of the boys and most importantly, your family? Can he dance? He doesn’t have to be a professional dancer, as long as he’s not shy, does he have potential? IDoes he play an important role in your life? Is he someone you just met this year, or a friend of a friend? Make sure he’s someone that will be there for you in the long run. IWill he have to be supervised? Is he a troublemaker? Will he be obnoxious and steal your thunder or ruin your party? Make a list of your potential chambelanes and ask yourself those 5 things. Let this be your guide and follow your heart. You don’t want any regrets!

Most Popular Nail Trends By: Jessica Bahena

It’s safe to say that having manicured nails is a must for everyday life, but when it comes to your Quince, maybe you’re looking for something a little more sparkly, dramatic or over the top. Nail trends are always evolving, but let’s talk about the three most popular right now, hopefully this helps you decide what you would like for your special day!

Short, manicured, with gel overlay. Celebrities

like Kim Kardashian and Shakira like to keep it short and simple. Gel comes in every color you can think of, even glitter! You can still create designs or use more than one color. Also you can have two or three nails a completely different color known as a “statement nail”. They are easy to maintain, last longer than nail polish and still allow you to do everyday things.

Acrylic with 3D

designs and rhinestones. This trend replaced the typical pink and white French manicure look. Each nail can be covered in sparkle, long, squared, different colors, and designs. Create a theme and have each nail tie in to your idea. The more 3D art, the harder to maintain, and if one of these break, it hurts!

Stilleto Nails

are worn by Rihanna and Kylie Jenner, and it doesn’t look like this edgy trend is going anywhere anytime soon. This look can be created by gel or acrylic and are usually a solid bold color. They can still have designs and sparkle, but you don’t want to over do it! These nails are very trendy, however can be dangerous and hard to do things like zip your jeans.

Whichever style you choose, make sure you go to a nail technician who is sanitary and licensed to do nails. One poorly done set of nails can cause infections, break down your natural nail or just ruin them. Be creative and

try new styles!

Should I post about my Quince on While social media seems to be taking over the world, and everyone is focused getting more followers, more likes and sharing special moments, what’s the limit? While some of you are more private about the events in your life, others can’t wait to take pictures and post them immediately! Your Quinceanera is a special day for you and your special guests to witness and partake in the celebration.

I know it may be hard for some of you not to share every moment on social media, but if you really would like to make a publication of your quince, Quinceanera Magazine can offer you the opportunity to have a whole page dedicated to you in the next edition. Contact your local Publisher. Be selective with everything you post, and remember some things are just not meant to be posted!

Photos by: Yalina Villaseñor

While you may want to post a picture or two to show your dress or your corte de honor, you don’t need to post your whole photo album on Facebook or Instagram, while family would love to see the pictures, show them to them in person not on FB for the whole world to see your Tia dancing. It could come off as showing off and also take away the exclusivity your guests got for being invited and attending. You could also request that your friends don’t post or tag you in any pictures. Think of the celebrity weddings, they don’t post every picture and neither do their guests. It’s out of privacy and respect.
