What Cake
flavor
Should You Pick? By: Jessica Bahena
Amongst all of the decisions you will have to make for your Quinceanera, cake is often one of the decisions we often take short cuts on. We don’t do enough research on bakeries, we don’t have taste testings and we go based on someone else’s recommendation. Then when we cut the cake and serve it, we’re disappointed when it’s too dry, not the right flavor, or has too much frosting.
Take control of your cake and decide what flavor YOU would like, here’s how to decide: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE FLAVOR? Think of your birthday cake when you turned 5. WHAT’S THE BAKER’S SPECIALTY? Ask them. What are they most known for? WHAT’S THE LEAST EXPECTED? Something unique.
Your guests will look forward

to not only a beautiful cake, but a great tasting one. Don’t focus too much on what it looks like more than the taste. Otherwise, what’s the point right? End the night on a good note with a delicious piece of cake, and when in doubt, add more layers!
“Quince” College Planning Tips By Aileth Avila – Chicago
We all know planning for a Quinceañera takes a lot of time and
thinking in advance in order to find the best deals and get perfect results. Well, college planning is the same idea and here are some helpful tips for early starters like you! en to new experiences and have fun while making smart decisions!
1. Maintain good grades throughout
all of high school. You’re only in high school 4 years- they all count!
2. Know the differences between a college and a university. Although these words are used interchangeably they are not the same when it comes to deciding which institution you will apply to. Usually liberal arts colleges do not ask you to declare your major until end of sophomore year, but when admitted to a university or you enter a specific college that will lead you to your major starting freshman year.
3. Find out if you are eligible for fee waivers for college applications and tests.
4. Sign up for your favorite schools’ mailing
list to receive information and important dates.
5. Some schools have fly-in programs that will pay for your flight to go visit campus. Others pay for your train ticket or even gas. Ask!
6. Don’t be afraid of going away
from home. Go out and explore. You might have the experience of a lifetime and you will never know!
7. Stay active in High School; be
involved in clubs, take leaderships roles and volunteer. Admission counselors like to see well-rounded students.
10
8. Build relationships with admissions
counselors from your favorite schools
starting freshmen and sophomore year by visiting at college fairs. This way they will know you personally and remember you when reading your application.
9. Optional interview? Do it! It won’t hurt,
only help and show more interest. If you’re nervous don’t be- be yourself and practice.
10. Do you prefer a small, medium, or
large size campus? Pick an environment where you feel most comfortable, have accessible resources and attention from professors when you need help.
11. Do they offer a club or sport you are
interested in participating while in college?
12. Don’t let due dates pass! Submitting
applications and financial aid documents can be overwhelming but staying organized and on top of due dates will help.
13. Ask many questions... What percentage of students graduate in four years? What is the retention rate for first year students, and why do they leave? What is the percentage of need-met for financial aid?
14. There are many websites that compare
colleges by rating food, academics, safety, accessibility, weather, etc. or just ask to talk to a current student for a clearer perspective.
15. Do not choose a college because
all your friends are going there. This is a time to meet new people and step out of your comfort zone. Be op

Most Popular Nail Trends By: Jessica Bahena
It’s safe to say that having manicured nails is a must for everyday life, but when it comes to your Quince, maybe you’re looking for something a little more sparkly, dramatic or over the top. Nail trends are always evolving, but let’s talk about the three most popular right now, hopefully this helps you decide what you would like for your special day!
Short, manicured, with gel overlay. Celebrities
like Kim Kardashian and Shakira like to keep it short and simple. Gel comes in every color you can think of, even glitter! You can still create designs or use more than one color. Also you can have two or three nails a completely different color known as a “statement nail”. They are easy to maintain, last longer than nail polish and still allow you to do everyday things.
Acrylic with 3D designs and rhinestones.
This trend replaced the typical pink and white French manicure look. Each nail can be covered in sparkle, long, squared, different colors, and designs. Create a theme and have each nail tie in to your idea. The more 3D art, the harder to maintain, and if one of these break, it hurts!
Stilleto Nails are worn by Rihanna and
Kylie Jenner, and it doesn’t look like this edgy trend is going anywhere anytime soon. This look can be created by gel or acrylic and are usually a solid bold color. They can still have designs and sparkle, but you don’t want to over do it! These nails are very trendy, however can be dangerous and hard to do things like zip your jeans.
14
Whichever style you choose, make sure you go to a nail technician who is sanitary and licensed to do nails. One poorly done set of nails can cause infections, break down your natural nail or just ruin them. Be creative and
try new styles!
What to Wear to a Photo Shoot By: Jessica Bahena Photos By: Image Studio Santa Rosa, CA
A photo shoot is an opportunity for you express yourself, tell a story, and allows you to get comfortable in front of a camera. So the photographer is picked, the day is scheduled and now you’re asking yourself What Do I Wear?
Here are some ideas to hopefully inspire an outfit: Something Solid Bright colors Seasonal, is your quince in the winter or summer? Something dressy Something casual Lots of accessories
16
A bright lipstick Not too short or low cut Not too matchy matchy Something you wouldn’t Your favorite heels normally wear Hat or headband A cool print or texture Something blingy A flowy dress Use a prop: umbrella, flower, or A statement necklace something that shows a hobby
You can literally wear anything you want as long as you feel confident and comfortable, but be creative and have fun!
Be a Good Dama By: Jessica Bahena
So, you were picked to be someone’s dama! Congratulations! You were chosen because you’re someone very special to them! Now you have some dama duties, getting your dress, practicing a dance, and showing up right? Right! The QUINCEANERA has a lot going on right now, lots of decisions to be made, lots of stress and maybe she’s a little nervous, and she could use a good wing-woman by her side! But besides doing the obvious, here are three ways you can be a good dama and she will love you even more!
Photo By: Aaron Martinez / San Diego
STAY POSITIVE: if she asks for your advice or tells you about how stressed she is about… be supportive, be a good listener and help her keep a cool head
Be drama free: don’t be the dramatic dama who doesn’t get along with the others or is always saying something negative. Remember it’s not about you this time.
Be someone she can count on: If you say you’re going to do something, do it, even if it seems like a minor thing, keep your word and be responsible.
18
Don’t compete: Let someone else be the one getting all of the attention for once, this day is all about her, and yes you’re important too, but just try to blend in, just once!
DO EVERYTHING YOU CAN
to make her feel special, hold her bouquet, fix her dress, hold her lip gloss, and tell her how beautiful she looks! That’s your job.

Day Make Up VS.
Night Make Up By: Jessica Bahena
Day time make up consists of lighter colors and a more natural look. Think of light browns and pinks with a fine line of eyeliner on the top lid. Lipgloss, tinted moisturizer, or a lighter shade of lipstick. Also, a light sweep of blush is the perfect touch. This make up is ideal for when you go to school, breakfast with the family, or are having a shopping day.
Night time make up consists of a darker more dramatic look. Think of dark browns, grays, and eyeliner on the top and inner lid. Lips can be a brighter shade or a darker shade depending on how dark your eye make up is. A popular trend right now is a nude lip with a smokey eye. You can add a darker blush or bronzer for definition of your cheekbones. This look is perfect for going out to dinner, a party or a night out. Knowing the difference between these two looks is crucial, because you don’t want to appear to be wearing too much make up during the day or not be able to see your make up at night. Experiment with make up, but remember sometime less is more!
