Trenton - The Quinte West community was in the giving spirit over the holiday season and raised $87,200 for the Salvation Army's kettle campaign, surpassing the kettle campaign goal of $80,000. "We are $7,000 over what we thought we would do from last year," said Pastor Rob Hardy, of The Salvation Army - Trenton Community Church, even though the campaign kicked off a week later than expected. "It's astonishing that we got that far, it's amazing, I'd like to thank the community for that," he said. Thanks to fundraising campaigns like the kettle campaign, Hardy said they were able to purchase and distribute 662 hampers, serving 902 adults, 750 children under 12 and 154 teenagers between the ages 13-18. "We were able to serve a lot of people over this Christmas season," said Hardy. "It's amazing, it was good and we did that through Smylie's Independent Grocer and (John Smylie) he's been doing this for a number of years and they've got it down pat." Hardy said he was worried about the lack of volunteers to man the kettles at the beginning of the campaign but community members stepped up to the plate. A total of 253 volunteers covered 670 shifts, totalling 1,340 hours of kettle coverage. "We had a 97 per cent coverage of our kettles, so that is astounding, the people of the community did step up and did well," said Hardy. "It surpassed my hopes but there was a lot of push, it didn't come easy but at the end of the day the community stepped Pastor Rob Hardy, of The Salvation Army – Trenton Community Church. Erin Stewart/Metroland up to the plate and to be able to cover that much, it was great." Hardy said he would also like to thank all of the churches and "Any funds from the thrift store that is above cost goes back into the comservice clubs who partnered with the Salvation Army to man a munity," he said. "I would like to ask for support for our thrift store, to help us kettle for a day. "It was just great to see that there aren't silos, that the community truly move forward in the community, donations and volunteers are needed as well." A part of the community for seven months now, Hardy said he and his wife comes together and they worked together in order to move forward." The Salvation Army's letter campaign to Trenton residents has fallen a little Captain Micheline Hardy have had an amazing time so far. "We feel like we're welcomed, I think the community accepts who we are short at $41,000, said Hardy, but the $6,000 shortfall in the letter campaign is and how we move and I think that shows by the coverage we're getting and the evened out with the surplus in kettle funds. The Salvation Army Thrift Store raised about $5,000 in 2016, money that funds we're able to raise," he said. "It's just a warm and welcoming place, it's been a great seven months." will go back into the community, said Hardy.
