News – Quinte West – Teams have formed up at St. Paul Catholic Secondary School in Trenton for the seventh Olympics Week on February 18 to 22. The events first started in 1992 at the school. “We have 24 teams,” says teacher and organizer Jared Storms. “This represents 24 countries.” Each team of up to 22 students from Grades 7 to 12 designs its own T-shirts, flags, costumes, logos and props. Teams include a mix in age groups and even some teachers as advisors. During Opening Ceremonies each team marches into the gym led by an Olympic torch (made by the chemistry teacher) and they raise the Olympic flag to the rafters. Teams are dressed as famous people in the countries they represent, accompanied by music. Norway is full of Vikings and Egypt could have mummies or pyramids. Once they even had a Trojan horse made of cardboard.
Russia of course would be a space ship. “It’s a wild time,” smiles Storms. During the week, students participate in all types of events, some athletic and some not so athletic. This includes an obstacle course, road hockey in the parking lot, bowling (at the bowling alley), skating at the arena, and indoor games like crokinole and science experiments. “This is the first time we are including Grades 7 and 8,” Storms adds. “Now that St. Peter’s is part of St. Paul, we can give these grades a chance to participate.” He said it will give the younger students a chance to mingle with older students and also meet teachers who are involved. Because the Olympics are held every four years, the younger students now in Grade 7 or 8 will likely get to participate twice. For
Habitat for Humanity build strategy updated for Quinte West
By Kate Everson
News - Quinte West – Peter Stewart, vice chair, and Len Kennedy, executive director of Habitat for Humanity, Prince Edward-Hastings, told council a new build is at least a year or two away. “We have built three homes in Quinte West,” said Stewart. “There is no scheduled build this year.” He said Habitat is building three homes this year and three next year including builds in Bancroft and Picton on land donated by the municipalities. They have built a total of 14 homes in the district. “We select families who Please see “Trenton” on page 5

can afford a mortgage but fall below the poverty line,” he noted. “This is a hand up. They don’t need a down payment and the mortgage payments are scaled to income.” A home will be scheduled for construction in Picton in March and has already started in Bancroft in November. “Families put in 500 hours of sweat equity,” he said. “Results show these families have better health and are better off with these homes than they were before.” He noted the mortgage money is reinvested into the fund to build more homes. “The ReStore covers administration costs,” he added.

CAO Charlie Murphy said the city is currently looking for opportunities for a partnership with Bob Clute and will bring back a report to council on February 10 with options. Terry Cassidy asked if the homes were priced at fair market value. Peter Stewart said this is all done by an appraiser. Cassidy asked if St. Paul Secondary is involved as a sponsor with the same commitment as previously. “St. Paul always takes the leading role,” Stewart acknowledged. He said they worked with John Brisbois and now Diane Teflo. “Every community takes a lead in organizing the build and rallying the troops,” he added. “In Belleville it was St. Theresa’s.”
