News - Quinte West - Council may put funds into its 2014 budget to help upgrade the fire training centre. A presentation was made by Chuck Naphan, president of the Hastings Prince Edward Mutual Fire Aid Association, at council on September 3. Fire Chief John Whelan noted that 14 courses go on at the centre involving 17 fire departments and 900 firefighters, including vehicle extrication, water rescue and how

to self-rescue if you are trapped. Chuck Naphan has been a firefighter in Batawa Station 5 for 27 years. He said the fire complex in Trenton has been there for 30 years and is owned and operated by the mutual fire aid association. He added that all courses are certified by the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office. He said it is much cheaper to train firefighters locally than to send them on courses. “We do it cheaper,” he said. “Nobody gets paid.”

He noted the air base also uses the facility for training and have done dual exercises with local fire departments including the SARtech rescue helicopter. “We have a contract with the military for training before they go to Alert,” he added. “They also have a Secret Squirrel exercise, but we can’t talk about that.” Please see “You” on page 3

Events - Trenton - The 23rd annual Scottish Irish Festival went ahead despite a rainy day Saturday. “We are praying for sunshine,” said chair Beth Cleaton at the opening ceremonies. She said last year Mother Nature dealt them a devastating blow flooding out the festival for the first time. But organizers simply went back to work planning the next year’s event. “The festival is a premier event,” she said. “We want to keep it working.” She commended organizers for an excellent Friday night military tattoo which went off without a hitch or even a drop of rain. “The ceilidh with Poor Angus kept the house rockin’,” she said. The new base commander Colonel David Lowthian was dressed in the traditional Air Force tartan accompanied by his wife Nancy. “I’m happy to be here,” he said. Chief Warrant Officer Sandor Gyuk, also in a kilt, was there with his wife Elizabeth, and a little white Scotty dog at his feet wearing the blue tartan scarf. Other important people on the stage included Fire Chief John Whelan and OPP Inspector Reynolds as well as representatives from 413 Wing, Chamber of Commerce and the city. MPP Rob Milligan wore his Irish wool sweater and cap he brought back from his recent holidays in Ireland with his wife. “We left the kids behind with some food and water,” he said. Milligan said the timely tour of the whole isle of Ireland was lovely and it only rained one day, although there was a bit of drizzle and sun, on and off. He also managed to kiss the Blarney Stone! The rain did not deter the heavy events from going on in the field next to the pavilion. Guinness record breaking Kevin Fast threw the caber in front of the stage. Fast obtained his 19th world record by throwing the caber 14 times in three minutes, beating the world record of seven. It was part of the highland games tradition from northern Scotland which began over one thousand years ago. Vendors in the field sold souvenirs and sweaters, kilts and swords from Ireland and Scotland, and food stuffed with haggis and served in the mist. Please see “Entertainment” on page 3
