WHY With restricted mobility and in-person cultural events cancelled for many, including MONOM, video streaming has become the vehicle to keep artists, venues, studios and creative professionals afloat. As human kind relies on art and technology, to navigate the transition the world is facing collectively, MONOM conceptualised a new event series to give musicians the possibility to perform and capture global audiences. For MONOM this time provided the opportunity to connect to FUNKHAUS and present you the solos project - a series that invites a diverse selection of artists living in Berlin to record and perform within SAAL 1 the largest studio in the world designed to record and broadcast symphony orchestras.
WHO AND WHAT? MONOM is an artist-run cultural centre, sound laboratory and home to the world's most advanced spatial 4DSOUND instrument created with over 100 artists during a decade long period of research, experimentation of which there is no comparison. Located in the historical recording and broadcasting studio FUNKHAUS, MONOM is about to generate a historical milestone returning to its origins as a recording and broadcasting studio. The solos project presents 11 handpicked artists performing a live session in SAAL 1, while putting the latest technologies in sound and visual communication into action. Captured in high quality audio and video, the performances are directly connected to MONOM’s studio where creative director and 4DSOUND designer William Russell will be simultaneously creating a live spatial sound rendering of the artist's piece.

BROADCASTING LIVE FROM FUNKHAUS BERLIN Abandoned after the fall of the Berlin wall, the historic broadcasting studio now will be revived to function as originally intended, enhanced through the latest innovations in media technology and sound engineering. Each artist in SAAL 1 will be completely isolated in the acoustically advanced sound proof hall and removed from any external subtle vibrations from the outside world. This is a moment where transformation occurs.
CONNECTING HISTORY WITH THE FUTURE The recorded sounds from the performance coming from the Saal 1 studio will be simultaneously sent via audio link to MONOM, recently connected on the other side of the Funkhaus where they will be recomposed and reconstructed spatially through the 4DSOUND system housed at MONOM MONOM has created a digital interactive interface that allows for audiences around the world to connect with both spaces at the same time and to choose between listening and viewing the high fidelity stereo symphonic hall recording of the live performance, or MONOM’s immersive 4DSOUND mix from their devices. With the first ever live 4DSOUND experience for headphones the audiences worldwide will be able to connect to MONOM as if they are in the centre of the room, without physically being in the space.
via live stream the audience at home will experience a split screen, whereby they will be able to choose the audio and visual they would like to listen to. SAAL 1 or MONOM
