Demètre H. Chiparus (Dorohoi 1886 - 1947 Paris), Paris We are pleased to offer one of the best and most famous works by Demètre H. Chiparus - the group of figures 'Les Girls', around 1928. Hardly any other artist has depicted the 'Années Folles' in France before the first global economic crisis better than the Romanian Dumitru Haralamb Chiparus. Hailing from a wealthy family, he was able to study sculpture in Florence and at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1912. In his studio, which he set up in 1918, he mainly spent his time portraying, artistically but truthfully, the theatre and cabarets in the bustling city. The modern woman is one of his preferred subjects, the actresses and dancers in their revealing, sometimes skin-tight, costumes are fully aware of their effect on the viewer, they know what they want and how to get it. The group of five, 'Les Girls' is one of the most famous examples of his work. The viewer witnesses a fantastically vivid stage scene: the dancers move synchronously. With elegantly spread arms and slightly bent upper body, they move forward step by step, the right toe is on the floor, the left leg performs the dance movement. Their heads are turned back and the girls' gaze is directed at an imaginary audience. Like a second skin, the leotards cling to their slender bodies, leaving only the girls' faces exposed. A comb-like headdress that starts at the crown and reaches almost to the shoulders gives them an Egyptian appearance. The faces and hands of the chryselephantine figures are made of finely carved ivory. The rest of the figures are made of cold painted bronze in a beautiful copper red. If you take a closer look at the overalls, you will notice the intricately decorated surfaces and ornaments of chains, net structures and ribbon overlays, which are designed differently for each of the five women. We know from historical photographs that Chiparus first made his designs in plasticine. Then a modeller was entrusted with the execution of the model. Chiparus monitored and reworked it himself until every detail was perfectly executed to his satisfaction. Like few of his contemporaries, he was as exacting about the execution of the bronze details as he did to the ivory carvings. The models were then bought by various bronze foundries, in this case Edmond Étling, Paris, and produced in small editions. Chiparus then received a percentage of the sale.

Johann Philipp Ferdinand Preiss began his training in the ivory carving workshop of his uncle Philip Willmann. After graduating, he stayed at his workshop for a few years and also continued his education at the newly founded vocational school in Erbach. Travels and study visits took him to Berlin, Milan and Paris, among others. In 1907, he briefly worked in Karl Haebler's company in Baden-Baden, where he met his future partner Arthur Kassler. Together they founded the company 'Preiss & Kassler Workshop for Ivory and Art' in Berlin. With at least six employees, they made sculptures, small objects and jewellery from ivory. Kassler took care of the finances while Preiss took over the artistic direction of the workshop from the start. Soon he began to revive the ancient technique of chryselephantine (Chrys = gold; elephantinos = made of ivory). Until the First World War, when the workshop had to be temporarily closed, Preiss & Kassler had great success at home and abroad with these figures, which at the time still paid homage to the classical style. He received the bronze parts for it from the well-known Berlin foundry H. Gladenbeck & Son. After the end of the war, there were initially difficulties to get material for figurines, but Preiss succeeded with a new style to depict the full life of the now 'Roaring Twenties' and thus re-kindled the interest of customers in Germany and in the rest of the world. The "Shyness" figurine offered here is a wonderful example of the transition phase.

The pillar tapestry is one of the most famous works by Otto Eckmann and the Scherrebek Art Weaving School. Justus Brinckmann secured a copy for the Hamburg Museum as early as 1898. Many other institutions followed. Represented in numerous exhibitions and shown in many magazines and other publications, the 'Five Swans' became an incunabula of Art Nouveau. "The slim proportions of the carpet, the motif of the swans, the composition of the rhythmically grouped tree trunks and the moving lines of the brook correspond to the aesthetic ideas of the time like few other works of decorative art." (Heinz Spielmann, quoted from the cat. of the Badisches Landesmuseum, p. 213).

Émile Gallé - The all-rounder Émile Gallé - when you hear this name, you immediately think of the beautiful, luminous glass vases that the passionate botanist and chemist made together with a team of highly talented employees in various techniques and levels of difficulty. Like many of his contemporaries, he was inspired in his works by the art of Japan, which was only just advancing into the rest of the world. He actually started his career in his father's ceramics factory, where he was already creating outstanding decors with an East Asian influence. In addition, around 1885, he started producing furniture. Lorraine, especially Nancy, has been famous for its high-quality furniture for centuries. Gallé therefore had no difficulty in finding carpenters who could produce for him. Regardless of the area in which Gallé got involved, he managed to combine his passions, like here in the 'Martin-pêcheur' showcase from 1900.
515 Émile Gallé, Nancy Showcase 'Kingfisher', c. 1900 Slim box construction. Single door. Glazed on three sides on a curved rectangular stand with four legs. H. 156 cm, 70.5 x 47 cm. The back wall inside is decorated with a marquetry made of different precious woods. A wide lake landscape is shown with weeping willow leaves and seven buzzing dragonflies in the foreground. Born in Moscow in 1897 to German parents, the artist studied in Munich with Emil Preetorius and in Berlin with Lovis Corinth, Willy Jaeckel and Eugen Spiro. Coming from a wealthy family, she lived abroad for several years, especially in Russia and Spain, where several of her works were created. Back in Berlin, she worked full-time as a portrait painter. The family's fortune seems to have been largely used up at the end of the 1930s, and she had no clients. Thus, since the outbreak of the Second World War at the latest, she worked for the Wehrmacht for two years as an interpreter and translator for Russian, Spanish and Italian, then continued as a freelancer. Although she was represented in numerous exhibitions at home and abroad, before and after the war, she did not experience much success and died impoverished in Berlin 1958 at the age of 63.
