PREFACE
We would like to express our sincere thanks for your active participation in the auctions of the past year 2022. Thanks to the consignors‘ high level of confidence, we were able to hold top-class auctions in our specialized categories. Exceptional private collections made this year especially exciting. For the second time, we were able to offer Italian design and contemporary art from the Teunen Collection. A cross-section of rarities of Scandinavian design, Murano glass and classical art from the estate of Margret Solbach was another highlight of the year. As was a German private collection of studio jewelry that attracted many international collectors under the title ‚Worn to be alive‘.
Moreover, we are pleased that our focused special themes continue to take place successfully twice a year. For example, the auctions dedicated exclusively to French artist René Lalique. In general, Art Deco is very much in demand, with results for bronze and ivory sculptures by Demètre Chiparus and Ferdinand Preiss remaining at a high level. We place a great emphasis on 20th century glass art. French Art Nouveau glass also still enjoys unbroken demand. However, there is also a particularly great interest in the high-quality furniture designs by Emile Gallé and Louis Majorelle from this epoch. The special Murano glass auctions held in March and September continue to be a magnet for international collectors.
In the field of 20th century design, Italian design is in the lead. During the auctions, not only are top prices paid for rare works from Albini to Sottsass, the sales quota is often over 80%. In recent years, objects from the 1990s to 2010s have also been particularly sought after. In the field of German Design, Henry van de Velde and Marcel Breuer are the stars - especially rarities such as Breuer‘s slatted chair went into collectors‘ hands at top prices.
Since 2017, when we auctioned off a private collection of primarily works by Friedrich Becker, we have been continuously expanding the area of studio jewelry. Since then, studio jewelry can be purchased twice a year, recently expanded to include artist jewelry. And for the first time this year, the offer has been rounded off by the auction series ‚Sparkle and Shine‘. Here we offer classic jewelry, costume jewelry, accessories and handbags.
In the Modern Art section, we were able to offer high-quality collections from the field of graphic art. For example, the extensive collection from the estate of the important art publisher Nesto Jacometti.
Now in its second generation, the Quittenbaum art trade can look back on a history of more than 65 years. The first auction in our house took place on May 10, 1998.
On June 27, 2023, we will be celebrating the 25th anniversary with a special anniversary auction. For this, we are very much looking forward to exceptional objects of international origin and significance. We are going to continue to hold the timed auctions ‚Online Only‘ in 2023. Here we will focus on interesting collections that are not in the upper price range.
With this brochure we would like to inform you about our highest results in our various categories. Please contact us if you would like to auction individual objects or an entire collection. We look forward to an exciting auction year 2023.
Yours, Askan Quittenbaum
