I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach .... I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear, nor did I wish to practice resignation ... I wanted to live ‌ to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms, and if it proved to be mean, why then to get the whole and genuine meanness of it,... -Thoreau on Walden Pond

Encampment Studet Accomodation Folly in the Woods Surf Life Saving Club

(Michael Dickson) (Peter Skinner) (Doug Neal) (Tim O’Rouke)

During my first semester, we were asked to design a camp shelter for four out of cardboard to which we had to then camp in, fortunately ours stood the test of three nights of rain. It was then that I became interested to seek out the base of all things, in architecture and other. The basic building blocks of needs; walls, roof, designing for climate etc. but also space, volume, light, things that are hard to quantify, yet tangible enough to fathom and to shape. With this I will introduce my graduating project. An investigation into the need of a surf club and providing a space for the individual and the collective.

- Graduating Project

The Surf Life Saving Club at Broadbeach is currently based in an building that has grew in stages from its original bungalow. Over the year it has become a conglomeration of sheds. The proposal is to accommodate the growing roles of the surf club, as an training camp for youngsters who would eventually leave to join a more competitive surf clubs in the future. With the view to establish an stable club membership by accommodating more ‘nippers’ . who would often drive down from Brisbane for the weekend. The proposal incorporates a hostel like setup to encourage and bring back some of the age old tradition of providing accommodation to club members. It was decided the club is to be free of pokies and parasitic operations that plagues surf clubs and RSL today. Because of the need to regulate

activities around children and to in keeping to it’s suburban nature of this particular strip of the Gold Coast, rather than an cafe or restaurant, a small take away and function space were inserted as less intrusive alternatives of maintaining revenue. The need for a clear organisation and strong circulation was clear from the initial research. This demanded for a division of club and storage space, public and private, servant and served space. The division achieved then forms a courtyard which in turn becomes activated by the activities that seep out of each of the spaces. This rational is carried within the building where a physical void pierce the void, flipping from atrium to courtyard and vice versa, but all the while providing the phenomenological and physical (seating, kitchen and primary circulation) means to stimulate social incidents.

(residential) (residential) (residential) (residential) (commercial) (competition)

Recently established after the departure of Donavan Hill Architects. Kim and Monique Baber began an intimate practice bringing together specialised knowledge from both their fields of public art and architecture. I was first involved with Baber Studio working on producing entries for the Gold Coast Cultural Center after returning from Japan. Eventually I was brought on to contract document a large commercial fit-out in Brisbane’s South Bank Cultural Precinct. My scope at Baber ranged from documenting existing dwellings, to producing construction documentation sets for commercial and residential projects. I became efficient working in Revit, and gained valuable experience, infusing construction details with design intent. Baber studio pushed me to be a better communicator and always work with an clear design intent. I was pushed to rethink material, stigmas and opportunities. Working closely with the builder as a young firm, we became actively involved with joinery making, fitting out the new office as well as on-site work during builds, providing welcoming challenges of on the spot problem solving.

The design intent was to create an new center of the house. The lantern was introduced as the mediating element between the interior and exterior to further blur the distinction of inside and out. With a focus to city views, the lantern space is delicate, a jewel box lined in white translucent amplelite sheets, fine timber and white powder coated stanchions. Contrast to the materiality of the rest of extension in raw CFC, ply, perforated metal and concrete, though it is not say the interior is not refined. Finally a heavy recycled brick plinth rises up to provide the connection with the ground

The Charming Squire Photos. The Charming Squire

Most recently opened microbrewery, restaurant, cafe and bar in Brisbane. A joint project with Sydney architects Colins & Turner, Baber Studio became the primary architects in dealing with builders and contractors. While C+T focused on Maintaining the James Squire Brand interface, (bar, display and joinery etc.) Baber studio focused on areas such as the structure, planning, external works, stairs, bathrooms and coordination between the various engineers and consultants. The overall scheme is driven by the narrative of James Squire as the first convict brewer. Raw material palettes of black, exposed concrete and steel were selected to contrast the rich orange timber and copper. The mezzanine, beer hall, terrace, restaurant and cafe, are an amalgamation of 4 tenancies, each tenancy on an different datum with openings cut into the divisions, each space was decidedly to be kept raw but dressed in refined materials, and distinct in character as a way of story telling. Being a fast tracked design and construct project, the Project evolved at an exciting pace to the feed back of the client, QS, builder, contractors, services and consultants, resulting in continuous design alterations leading to the refined scheme it is. Top. View of bar from mezzanine space Lower. View of bar, glazed keg storage and onsite brewing tanks

Gold Coast Cultural Center - Ideas Competition

A closed ideas competition by the Gold Coast City Council to revitalised a peninsular of reclaimed land that is currently the site of an under-utilised park and town hall building. I was Brought on to the team to model and provide render/ visuals. Working closely with Sydney landscape architect, Julian Raxworthy the proposal introduces bridge connections towards the tourist hub of the gold coast, and like the Sydney Opera House, we introduced an peninsular bound Art Gallery, a delicate jewel box, and responding to the kitsch competition brief, an artificial heart shaped pool on the river. A series of veils were placed to introduce cooled micro-climate alternatives to the barren beach strip on the coast.

The water feature comprises a series of water poles, abstracted from a forest of natural forms. The water display is interactive with the movements of the city, as trees are interactive with the wind. Whilst there will be a continuous play of water, with tram or pedestrian movement, the fountain display (through movement sensors and random selection) will increase its density of performance with the city’s day and night time rythms. This water display will include fog/mist, flood, wet poles, falling into a fine stainless steel grate, allowing permeable movement throughout. Light displays will accentuate water displays and the vertical form of the fountain. The paving mixes characteristic blustone detailing with a tracery of naturalistic pattern, and overlain by a piazetta that bisects the site, addressing the signal station and juxtaposing the linearity enforced by the tramlines and Swanston Street axis.

The pavilion is designed as a continuous geometric ‘knot’, creating a looping ramp which serves as the backbone of the exhibition. At the centre of the knot is a pond with a statue of Hans Christian Andersen’s ‘Little Mermaid’. The architectural design requires a column-free exhibition space and the top level of the ‘knot’ is cantilevered dramatically from its main support, which created big challenges for Arup’s structural engineers.

Selected from a 2 stage limited competition, originally entitled the “John MockridgeFountain after the prominent Melbourne modernist architect of the same name, the Swanston Street North Waterfeature was produced by Aspect in association with Sinatra Murphy & PL Consultants for the City of Melbourne. The scheme was generated from Mockridge’s in architectural form drawn from nature. The water feature is located at the north end of the Swanston Street axis, from the Shrine of Remembrance, in the quickly developing education precinct, that is chracterised by some of Melbournes finest contemporary architecture. The design had to deal with extremely tight constraints, including extreme environmental conditions, an existing tramline & a heritage signal station.

I came on to the team for a feasibility study for the Noosa regional Council for medium density housing, I helped document the proposed site and produced a package of studies and proposal schemes. I was responsible for a small arts pavilion, and presenting the design. Bark Design operated in an niche market of luxury coastal Bach, there was a high intake of interest in new builds, and I focused on producing sketch design package for numerous residential projects, producing hand drawn plans sections and perspectives, model making as well as digital visualization utilising ArchiCad 14 as well as the Adobe Creative suite

Mission Arts Pottery Pavilion

A small extension for the arts center of the small community of Mission Beach. The brief was direct and required to be cyclone resistant. The dimensions were arrived at standard sheet material sizes. Planned to be on link on existing workshops, the pavilion takes advantage of its aspect with large hopper windows and proprietary garage door systems to create awning shading when opened, borrowing external light and providing passive ventilation in the tropical climate.

Cairns ‘City Alive’ Revitalisation

Bark was approached by Aecom to part take the Cairns Regional Councils ‘City Alive’ revitalisation program. Having to work within design constraints of standard Translink bus shelter systems, a series of screen were envisioned for the roof. Utilising CNC technology as explored recently by Bark Lab. Two imagery were selected for the scheme. The coral and Palm, are translation of cairns’ renown as gateway to the Great Barrier reef, and Rain-forest of northern Queensland. A series of colors and patterns were abstracted, and translated into Sketchup, where visualisations created for council use.

Fabrication+ installation Hosting Workshop Maintaining Social Media

Involved with art installation project titled ‘Growth’ at Floating Land art festival 2013. Involvement in the creation before and during the life of the project over the festivals 10 days. The project was initiated by Bark Design Architects as an exercise to explore tools for rapid prototyping and bio-mimicry. 4 ‘sails’ produced utilising provide an abstracted axis towards significant sites and aboriginal grounds. Pairs of sails land on the beach and rises out of the lake as a foil to each other forming a abstraction of house and its negative. Its presence creates an heightened awareness of the landscape. The experience allowed me to be familiar with the lazer cutter and CNC routing machines. More crucially bracing techniques for extreme wind conditions.

(apprentice) (apprentice) (self guided) (scholarship)

I believe the best way to be familiar with something is through doing, I am intrigued by how the world works and seeks for understanding of things, through past apprenticeship, research. More recently through a self guided Qu.Ack Studio, I am able to i have undertaken adventures in dealing with client whilst exploring rapid prototyping interests. My most recent investigation is into a leaking ceiling and stud wall, through the removal of plasterboards water ingress points where located, and has since offered advice into structural repair. I hope to use Qu.Ack Studio as a platform of future self guided projects.

EXPERIENCE

008

Qu.Ack Studio - PNG Display Model

Contract work for a developer in building a highly detailed model for a mixed-use development in Papa New Guinea. Over various meetings with the client, negotiating needs and expectations, I delivered a 1:75 scaled model. The process involved considerations for the longevity of materials, transport and strains placed on the material by the tropical climate. Foam core was selected as ‘structural’ material. Its strength-to-weight ratio opened up the option to have a removable roof, to showcase various residential options and commercial office spaces. Finishes and furnishings were crafted and applied to reflect final texture, finishes and joinery. The building modeled in Revit CAD. Lazer cutting was utilised for fine members, but where material choice restricted and to avoid burn marks, much of the model was cut manually. Working closely with the client, the model became a way to explore alternative design options. A plywood plinth was crafted and acrylic display case made for shipping.

Kenwork

- Glass Stainless Steel Ltd

Working as an apprentice in a metal workshop manufacturing galvanized balustrades for a new build at Manurewa High School. I focused on angle cutting and prepping plate steel for assembly, and working on the post galvanized balustrades, providing finishing touches, and on-site installation. steel presented itself as a plastic, malleable material, sculptural opportunities from simple wields, and inherent structural strength from visually deceiving members.
