Welcome to springboard 2019 QUT Law Society’s annual careers guide Springboard is a roadmap, helping you on the path to success. Law school can sometimes be tricky and stressful, particularly when it comes to choosing where you want your studies to take you. Studying law does not necessarily mean you must become a lawyer, there are endless opportunities that come with legal education. Within these pages lie comprehensive materials for those looking to advance into their next stage of professional development – specifically those approaching clerkship and graduate year. Springboard provides information on a range of different possibilities, for diverse and challenging environments that you may strike a particular interest in. QUT Law Society aims to offer insight into what is required to take that next step, what you need to do, and who you should talk to. We have compiled the profiles of many firms (both major and minor), financial firms, government departments, various not-for-profit organisations and other businesses, so YOU can have that headstart when entering the job market. We do recommend that once you find an opportunity which ignites you interest, you undertake further investigation and own research to confirm what you need. Springboard is intended as a guide, prepared by students for students, based on what we think is the most important information you should know when looking to the future. QUT Law Society wishes you all the best in your future endeavours and successes – anything is possible!

law for the real world
From Your President It is my pleasure to introduce the 2019 edition of the QUTLS Careers Guide, brought to you by the QUT Law Society. A career in the law industry is becoming increasingly competitive but also more diverse than ever before. It is important that law students are prepared to meet the demands of the law in 2019 and beyond. Just like the industry, the law degree at QUT is constantly changing and updating to meet these new pressures. An example of this is the new AI, Robotics and the Law minor now being offered. Looking ahead and planning for success is something that can be lost amidst the amount of work, co-curriculars and networking we, as law students, are required to do to boost the resume and compete for the best jobs. This does not mean it should be lost all together. With this in mind, the 2019 QUTLS Careers Guide has been produced to help students gain an understanding of the various opportunities to consider when faced with the important decision of what career direction to choose beyond university. A career is one of the biggest decisions that most people will ever have to make in their life and should not be made lightly. As I move into my final year of study and have the opportunity to meet many industry professionals by attending QUT Law Society events, I am constantly considering the following questions: Why did I choose to study law? What area of law am I passionate about? What kind of career will make me want to get up in the morning? Where do I see myself in the short, medium and long term future and what do I have to get their? The Careers Guide, along with the amazing support we receive from the faculty, PLT and firm partners, serve as invaluable resources for every QUT law student. This year’s edition contains a number of articles and profiles written by legal professionals as well as a plethora of dates and opportunities for you to involve yourself in the legal fraternity. I cannot stress how important it is to take yourself out of your comfort zone and meet your future peers before, during and after your job application process. It will set you apart. This year’s publication would not be possible without the support of our corporate sponsors, in particular my team and I would like to thank QUT Practical Legal training, Thomson Geer, Clayton Utz, King and Wood Mallesons and Mccullough Robertson as our generous platinum sponsors. Finally, I would also like to thank our team who have worked tirelessly to construct this publication. I would like to make particular note of Zane Jhetam, Anna Wilson and our Media and Communications portfolio. Without their dedication this amazing resource would not be possible. I look forward to meeting all of you at the next QUT Law Society Event!

Clerkship and Graduate Program Basics Clerkships Every year, pre-penultimate and penultimate law students are given the opportunity to get a foot in the door at various law firms. A clerkship is a vacation program that provides law students with invaluable opportunities to grow and demonstrate their legal knowledge in a law firm, and form real connections with those working in the industry. The exciting opportunity to clerk in a firm usually expands over the course of four weeks (depending on the firm), in either the summer of winter breaks from university. The time (and ensuing stress) for clerkship applications draw ever closer – with applications for participating firms opening on 26 February and closing the following month on 26 March. A full list of participating firms and important dates can be found on the Queensland Law Society’s website. For those set on securing a clerkship, the application process can be described as an educated Hunger Games. With clerkships the most highly sought positions for law students, the nature of clerkship season is often stressful and competitive. As such, it is fundamental to begin preparing your application early. Pay particular attention to perfecting your resume and cover letter, as this will maximise your chances of securing a clerkship. If you are one of the lucky few to receive a clerkship at a firm – a big congratulations! You will be part of an organisation that will grow your legal knowledge, and provide you with invaluable insight into the legal industry. However, if you are unsuccessful in your application, there is no need to worry. Success in the legal industry comes in many shapes and sizes, and there are various other pathways for you to pursue.
Graduate Positions A graduate position is a full-time employment opportunity that is offered to LLB graduates following the completion of their degree. Graduate positions at firms are more likely to be offered to students who have previously clerked at the firm, however, many firms also choose to recruit through an open market process. A graduate position is a further opportunity for exposure to the legal industry, while usually being accompanied by a mentor or ‘buddy’ to assist you with any difficulties you may face in your first year in the legal industry. Applications for graduate roles for many firms open in August for intake at the start of the following year. While this time of year is ripe with graduate opportunities, it is important to remember that other graduate positions often arise at any time. Like clerkships, if you are unsuccessful in securing a graduate opportunity, don’t stress! There are many alternative pathways to take – including graduate roles not at law firms. Clerkships and graduate positions are often a daunting time for most law students. You’re finally heading out into the real world to apply your legal knowledge! Unlike many unrealistic televised portrayals of lawyers (yes, I’m looking at you Suits) we are not always prepared for what these positions may throw at us. It is however, always important to come into a new position with knowledge and tips to assist you along the way. For this reason, we have asked some QUT Law Students who have recently clerked or completed graduate positions for some helpful hints.

interview tips Law and Interviews Those who choose the conventional way of securing a job as a lawyer in a law firm must undergo an interview process (along with the other gruelling processes like CV submission, psychometric testing, and networking events). It can’t be stressed enough that the law industry in Brisbane is massively competitive and law firms tend to have recruit only the best. In short, even if you ace the interview and have appropriate skills, you won’t necessarily get the job. However, that doesn’t mean you can get away with a weak interview. Some naturally perform well in interviews because of their outspokenness and approachability. But if that is not you, there are a few techniques that can help you take control of your interview.
What is an interview? Interviews are the tool that firms use to assess your motivation, demeanor and personality - i.e. how you ‘fit’ into their culture. To excel at interviews, you should learn what each firm expects from applicants, and try to convey that in a persuasive (but not arrogant) way. Each interview is different, but there are some general takeaways which are consistent across the board: • Interviews generally starts with a meet-and-greet session where the potential candidate, the interviewee, would be asked some basic questions as to his or her desired career path, level of studies, and other surface-level information. • Many interviews are designed to assess the skills and experience of each candidate. Give pointed answers which address selection criteria, with evidence (not mere assertions). • There will likely be specially tailored questions for each candidate based on your CV. These questions uncover the value of your experience, and your honesty (so don’t lie on your CV, or you will be caught). • Lastly, the candidate would have the opportunity to clarify doubts that may arise pertaining to, perhaps, the incentives that each employee is entitled to. It could be potentially about the prospects of promotion in the future or simply about the functioning of the organisation itself. • The interviewer, then, concludes the interview session by thanking the candidate for coming and then notifies him or her that the results will be communicated in a brief delay after all other candidates would have been assessed.
10
Preparation To be successful in an interview, it is essential that you are comfortable talking about why you want to work at the place you have applied for. At a minimum, you need to be familiar with basic information about the firm. Furthermore, many firms pride themselves on individuality, so you also need to intimately understand their values and initiatives. You can find this information from the following sources: • Firm website; • Consulting firm HR and recruiters at networking events (this also demonstrates interest); • Reports produced by the firm; • University and society careers brochures (such as the 2019 QUTLS careers guide); and • Attending informational events.
Set an exceptional first impression How to set a good first impression: • Demonstrate punctuality by arriving on-time, if not early; • Being polite and friendly (the partner interviewing is rarely the only person at the firm with input into the hiring process); • Self-grooming; and • Formal attire (if appropriate).
Acing your interview Basic pointers on how to ace an interview: • Be prepared to discuss the content of your CV; • Prepare for basic questions that you expect to be asked, such as: • Why do you want to work at xxxx? • What are your strengths (or weaknesses)? • What is a situation in which you have demonstrated those skills? (remember, skills learned in other industries like retail and hospitality are readily transferable to legal practice) • What are your interests and hobbies? • Be mindful of your demeanor - maintain appropriate body language, use eye contact, and keep things conversational; and • Stay calm, take a deep breath, and present your best self - confidence is key. You should also consider using the STAR method for your answers.
The end of the interview • The end of the interview is a great opportunity to demonstrate your interest by having your own questions for the interviewer prepared. This shows interest and initiative. • Make sure to thank the interviewer for their time before leaving.

SURVIVING AND THRIVING THROUGH THE CLERKSHIP PROCESS Emma Avey, Law Graduate The clerkship process can be a very daunting and stressful process. So here are my top five tips for surviving (and thriving) through the process. START YOUR APPLICATIONS EARLY Trying to juggle the applications and university at the same time can be a hassle. If you break it down into little pieces, it’s far easier to manage. Plan ahead by conducting your research early. Think about what firms and areas of law you are interested in. That way you can spend time crafting your cover letters to show your knowledge for each firm and how you would be a great fit! The more time you spend polishing your cover letters, the better they will be. Firms will be able to tell if you’ve rushed to submit all of your applications the night before they’re due. So save yourself the stress and start early! KEEP TRACK OF THE DEADLINES AND KEY DATES The application deadlines, interviews and cocktail evenings all tend to pile up. With the pressures of university thrown in, stress can make it easy to forget key dates. For me, I had four assignments due on one day in the middle of interviews and cocktail nights! Make sure you are ahead of the game and have all of your key dates well documented. Your phone calendar will be getting a workout! A couple of days before an interview, set yourself a reminder to practice some mock interviews to make sure you’re as comfortable and as prepared as you can be. TRY AND MAKE THE MOST OF THE PROCESS While the process can seem like a chore, it’s an invaluable experience to go through and you can gain a lot of insight into life as a solicitor. When I went through the clerkship process, Thomson Geer held a face-to-face interview with two partners and a cocktail evening - the cocktail evening was a great way to learn about the firm. If you make the most of the cocktail evening, when you show up for your clerkship at the end of the year, you’ll be greeted by friendly faces who you have already met. The process has now changed slightly, and the interview is conducted by video, but the cocktail evening is still there, so make the most of it!
SAVOUR EVERY MINUTE OF YOUR CLERKSHIP My clerkship at Thomson Geer was an amazing experience. As a clerk you learn so much about life as a solicitor and by the end of it, you’ll feel like you’re ready to take on the corporate legal world! Thomson Geer invests a lot of time into showing clerks what a range of teams do, which is invaluable if you’re anything like me and had no idea about which area of law you were interested in. Never say no to anything on a clerkship because you never know what you’ll be able to take away from it. The tasks you will perform as a clerk will vary from everything between research tasks, attending client meetings and preparing court documents. Not only will it be an invaluable learning experience, you will be adding real value to the firm and for clients. When I was a clerk, I was lucky enough to join the Employment and Safety team as they prepared for a court hearing and it was all hands on deck. I really felt like part of a team even in those very early days. Try to be as social as possible. Have lunch with your allocated buddy, ask if you can play on the social netball team, go along to Friday night drinks! In doing so, you can build your professional network, while having some fun at the same time. I kept in contact with many of the people I met through my clerkship before starting my graduate role. And with any luck, the people you meet will be your colleagues for many years to come. (MOST IMPORTANTLY) BE YOURSELF! While this is easier said than done, don’t be afraid to let the firm know who you are on your clerkship. Grab on to the things that make you unique. Whether you are a keen athlete, can tear up the dance floor, love to curl up in bed with a good book or are just a crazy cat lady (like me), let your personality shine. Be confident in your abilities and who you are as a person. Don’t be afraid to be you! I wish you all the best of luck and I hope to see you at Thomson Geer!
Office etiquette Tips Be conscious of your surroundings in open plan. If you are on a long phone call or having a lengthy discussion, consider moving to a breakout room. Say good morning to everyone when you arrive. Check-in before you leave to see if you can assist further. Traps In open plan, your team members are more easily accessible. It’s easy to fall into the trap of approaching them for everything – exercise your judgement and only approach when necessary.
Prioritising Tips Communicate your task list to your mentor or buddy; they are aware of the group’s priorities and will help you determine what should be done first. Check-in with your instructing lawyer regularly, eg daily, on how you are progressing with your task. Use your calendar to record due dates and set reminders for yourself. Traps Not communicating to your mentor or buddy when you feel under pressure. Not being realistic about your own timeframes. If you have many tasks to do, say, ‘thank you for giving me this task, however I do have X tasks to complete by Friday. Can I complete this task for you on Monday?’
Feedback
Tips Be comfortable to ask for feedback from your instructing lawyer. You don’t need to wait for them to approach you. It can be as simple as saying ‘when you have a moment, I’d really appreciate any feedback on X task’. Source your own feedback by critically reviewing the final version of your work to learn what was changed, and ask why. Traps Taking constructive criticism personally. Not learning from, or implementing feedback. Create a list of your feedback and review the key points against your work before submitting it.
Your fellow seasonal clerks are your allies. Communicate and learn from each other’s experiences – chances are you will bump into your fellow clerks throughout your career! WWW.CORRS.COM.AU

Major Projects & Construction at Clayton Utz
Kate Grutzner, Lawyer
Why Major Projects & Construction? Clayton Utz’s Major Projects and Construction practice is one of the leading construction practices in Australia. The team has a fantastic range of clients – Federal and State Government departments, major multinational companies, and large contractors – and works on high-profile building and infrastructure projects around the state and the country. The firm is particularly well placed to provide a unique insight into what it’s like to do work with various Government departments, and this is something anyone looking to engage with that kind of work should consider. The firm offers both transactional (“front-end”) and dispute (“back-end”) services, and although most lawyers specialise in one of these areas, both teams work very closely together and provide their insight to achieve the best possible outcomes in both drafting agreements and resolving disputes. As a junior, you will get to experience both advisory and litigious work which will make you a more well-rounded practitioner, and will better inform your understanding in the area that you decide to pursue. Clayton Utz advises a range of clients in the development and implementation of the documentation and arrangements that allow major projects and infrastructure to be built and run. The firm is particularly well known for its work on Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) which bring together the public and private sectors to build major infrastructure – many of the roads, railways, ports, prisons, courts and hospitals around the state and the country were built under this model, and Clayton Utz is at the forefront of this area. The skills you learn are invaluable – helping bring together a range of parties to achieve not just a commercial outcome but also an outcome that is for the public good, drafting incredibly complex agreements and seeing the results of your work in a really tangible way. Construction disputes often involve areas of law beyond construction law, such as contract, tort, insolvency and corporations law, so the work is diverse, challenging and exhilarating. In addition to gaining court experience, construction disputes often pass through negotiation, mediation and arbitration before ending up in court. This gives you a broad range of experience and skills in a market where litigation is often a last resort. Why Clayton Utz? Working in the construction team at Clayton Utz provides not only the opportunity to work with supremely talented lawyers and barristers on a daily basis, but the work is exciting, interesting and often involves large teams of people. There is nothing more satisfying than working on a dispute or contract with a large team and seeing all your hard work and collaboration resulting in a deal reaching close or a dispute being settled. Working in Clayton Utz’s construction team, you will often drive along roads you’ve provided advice on and walk past buildings that you wrote the contracts for. Seeing and using the tangible outcomes of the work you do around the city and the country is really satisfying. Because of our reputation, you will get exposure to some of the most high-profile and cutting-edge work a lawyer can do. If you want to really get to know these fantastic clients inside and out, many lawyers in the team have the chance to undertake secondments, gaining a unique insight into the client’s perspective, and a much deeper understanding on how best to service clients. I spent six months at the Office of the Coordinator-General, the government office that overseas four of the State’s flagship infrastructure projects - the Level Crossing Removal Project, the Metro Tunnel Project, the Western Distributor Project and the North East Link Project. This opportunity gave me a behind-the-scenes look at many of the opportunities and challenges that our clients face, and a real sense of the value of the services that we provide as lawyers - which on the projects we work on are never just legal. The Clayton Utz construction team has something for everybody – both transactional and dispute-resolution opportunities, getting to work with some of the best lawyers and clients in the business, including many Government clients, secondment opportunities, and the chance to see the impact that you and your team have made out in the real world.

Introduction Completing a summer clerkship is an extremely rewarding, exciting and challenging experience which gives you a true sense of what working in a law firm is all about. Read on below to hear about my experience as a clerk at KWM in 2017. The application and interview process: Unfortunately, for most people the clerkship application process is stressful – it is an intense time where you’ll find yourself updating your CV, preparing for interviews and studying all at once. I found that KWM truly recognised the challenges of the process and sought to make applying as easy as possible. This is shown by the ‘KWM Become’ app which gives you valuable information about the firm and updates throughout the application process. Additionally, KWM’s Drinks & Information Evening made me feel a lot more comfortable. The Information Evening had a relaxed vibe and I quickly found that lawyers and staff were not only friendly but genuinely happy to answer my questions about the application process and the firm. The down-to-earth nature of the firm left an impression on me, which meant that right away I felt KWM would be a great place to work. The work Lawyers went out of their way to make sure that I got to work on a range of interesting and varied tasks throughout the clerkship including – research, drafting memos of advice, writing letters and compiling briefs to counsel. One of the things that stood out for me was that lawyers were always on the look out for new and interesting things to do – I was always welcome to attend court and witness conferences. All the while, I was provided with valuable feedback on my work, which meant that over the course of the clerkship I developed my skills and learnt a lot about how to manage legal work.
53
The culture One of the best things about KWM is its culture – the Brisbane office has a great team environment where everybody knows each other and there is a strong focus on getting involved in social events. This focus runs through everyone and I found that both partners and other lawyers were always approachable and willing to offer advice and guidance. The support The training and support provided over the clerkship was fantastic. To get started, the clerkship commenced with a range of training sessions aimed at making us ready to use KWM’s computer systems and processes. Once rotations commenced, there was never a point where I felt alone or unsure of who I could go to for support. During the clerkship you are assigned a buddy (usually a graduate lawyer) who is always there to answer your questions - whether they be big or small. Additionally, during the rotations I found that junior and senior lawyers always had time for me to speak about the work I was doing, ask questions and chat about my clerkship experience. Pro Bono and community KWM staff are passionate about giving back to the community and clerks are always encouraged to get involved and lend a hand. I spent an afternoon volunteering at the Homeless Persons’ Legal Clinic and was given the task of assisting the KWM solicitor to take notes and record the client interview. Why I chose King & Wood Mallesons I was initially drawn to KWM because of its highly skilled team of lawyers and the fact that KWM is working on some of the largest and most complex legal matters around. I also admired its vision of innovation, focus on providing high quality client service and commitment to building a strong connection in Asia. Ultimately however, what made me decide to choose KWM was the people. KWM has a great team spirit which made me trust that at KWM I would receive the support I need to become a successful lawyer. My clerkship vs. my expectations The clerkship totally exceeded my expectations. Leading into the clerkship I knew I was going to learn a great deal about legal work, but I did not know whether I would enjoy the law firm environment. The clerkship at KWM changed this feeling. Everyone I worked with (from my buddy to supervising partner) made me feel welcome and valued. This makes KWM a fantastic place to work. Who would I recommend a KWM clerkship to If you have an interest in becoming a lawyer and are excited to learn and challenge yourself then a clerkship at KWM is for you. It is truly an invaluable opportunity to engage in high quality legal work alongside a passionate team in an office that goes out of its way to support you.

Life at McR so far has been nothing short of exciting – from being involved in large matters from day one, going on secondment during the internship program, to taking on a pro bono client as a graduate. McR empowers juniors by providing us with endless opportunities! From the get-go I was involved in large matters and treated as a valued member of the team. The perks of working in the Litigation and Dispute Resolution group is that every day differs from the next. From considering case law to attending the Supreme Court, each day uncovers new challenges and invaluable learning experiences. I work with likeminded people in an area that genuinely aligns with my interests. My team exudes diversity, balance and innovation. My top tip: Focus less on what you were taught at Law School and more on your holistic approach to working as a member of a team in the legal industry.

For someone like me who is broadly curious about all kinds of industries and areas of law and who is hungry to learn from a diverse range of legal experts and potential mentors, McCullough Robertson seemed to be the perfect place to start my legal career. Where it all began My journey with McCullough Robertson started nearly 5 years ago in April 2014. At the time, I was entering my third year of law school and had just returned from a short-term exchange program at the University of Vienna where I studied international law. A friend of mine mentioned that McCullough Robertson was hiring clerks on a casual basis to assist in the document review component of a major construction trial. I had never been exposed to a law firm (my previous job being in wedding videography/ photography of all things) and the idea of wearing a suit to work, having a desk and rubbing shoulders with the kinds of characters that may have inspired John Grisham novels and Suits was exciting and intimidating. Given the urgency of the work, I was interviewed the very next day. I bought a suit on the way to the interview and cheekily told the salesperson that if I was unsuccessful I would be back to return it. Luckily for me, I didn’t have to. By the time the interview commenced, I had read everything I could find on McCullough Robertson. One thing that impressed me before I had stepped foot in the firm was that it was (and I believe still is) the biggest law firm office in Brisbane – it is not merely an international brand with a few desks in Brisbane. For someone like me who is broadly curious about all kinds of industries and areas of law and who is hungry to learn from a diverse range of legal experts and potential mentors, McCullough Robertson seemed to be the perfect place to start my legal career. Writing my story with McCullough Robertson I was lucky to nab the document review role back in April 2014 (while still at university) and I commenced work the very next day. The next chapter of my life at McCullough Robertson went from reading about the firm on paper to living and breathing it on a daily basis. It is not a story of the size of the firm or statistics that you can read about in Doyle’s Guide but of the people I have met – and they remain the reason as to why I love my job and the source of all of the opportunities that I continue to enjoy.
”
McCullough Robertson is sometimes described as ‘a big firm without the attitude’, and while I am consistently sceptical about corporate taglines, this one rings true. Here are a few examples: Strong Mentorship: the partner I worked for in the beginning and whose team I have joined as a newly-admitted lawyer is genuinely someone I look up to and hope to emulate. He is a socially intelligent manager who never fails to recognise the efforts of his juniors including with handwritten thank you notes, frequent in-person check-ins (“how are you going?” “what do you want to do in the future?” “what are your thoughts on how we should approach this client?”), and is eager to develop us not just as technically excellent lawyers but as future leaders of the firm;
Milan Gandhi
GRADUATE 2018 INTERN 2016 RESEARCH CLERK 2014 MCR INNOVATION AMBASSADOR Construction and Infrastructure | Insurance and Corporate Risk
Welcoming and approachable leadership: Seniors leaders including the Managing Partner and Chairman of Partners rarely miss an opportunity to say “Good Morning” to my fellow juniors and me. They take an interest in what we are up to, notwithstanding that these individuals must be close to the busiest people on the face of the planet; Structures to support growth: I have consistently felt that the HR Team is a warm and positive force, have my back and are available at any time to have a chat; and Camaraderie with Colleagues: One time my Senior Associate said I was the “Mike Ross” to her “Harvey Spectre” – need I say more? Is this the right place for me? I feel confident in putting my hand up for various opportunities, and actively pursuing my professional interests. I really do like the people I work with. They’re excellent at what they do but they’re also the kind of people who you would actually have a beer with outside of work (and we do!). Law life is challenging but it is easier to enjoy it and do it well when your colleagues have your back.

Importantly, being a junior lawyer at McR doesn’t limit you to just the work. The firm opened new doors for me professionally and personally, and along the way I’ve become heavily involved in a number of special causes close to my heart, particularly in the community partnerships and pro bono space. Developing a strong foundation I started as a Graduate in 2013 and my first rotation was in our Private Client Structuring team, where I was involved in estate planning and corporate restructuring. While never professing to be a tax lawyer, the time I spent in that team gave me a solid understanding of trusts and companies, which has since proven invaluable. It also helped develop strong relationships and referral networks within that team, which remain to this day. Taking the lead I then rotated into the Property, Planning and Finance team, which has become my home. Starting out with financing, conveyancing and leasing transactions with direct supervision from the partners, I was given the opportunity to develop and grow in my key areas of interest, which has been incredibly rewarding. I’ve had the privilege to take the lead role in transactions involving the sale of shopping centres and retirement villages, funding for large scale residential developments and receiverships of iconic Queensland assets.

The game has changed. Be part of it. A day in the life Lachlan Pramberg, Lawyer, Brisbane Shares his career journey, hints and tips
Tell us a bit about yourself? My name is Lachlan Pramberg and I am second year lawyer at MinterEllison’s Brisbane office. I graduated at the end of 2016 with a dual degree in Business Management and Law (Honours). Before commencing my degree, I was fortunate enough to undertake a gap year in England working in a school as a sporting coach and boarding housemaster. Outside of work I enjoy playing sport and travelling. Where did you clerk and why? I clerked in the Projects, Infrastructure and Construction (PIC) team in the 2015/16 summer intake of the MinterEllison vacation clerkship program. I chose PIC as Queensland -particularly southeast Queensland – was and still is in a significant growth phase with projects such as the Queens Wharf development, cross-river rail and Brisbane metro.
Which rotations were you part of? During my time as a graduate I was involved in rotations in energy and resources, property (capital transactions), projects, infrastructure and construction, and finance.
What kind of legal work were you involved with? One of the most rewarding aspects of being a graduate at MinterEllison is the quality work you are exposed to and the opportunities available for continual learning and professional development.
graduates.minterellison.com
The type of legal work included: – Drafting advice on specific problems faced by clients. – Drafting articles and case notes for publishing. – Hosting a round table lunch with clients discussing the intricacies of new legislation. – Attendance at meetings. – Running settlements. – Internal presentations providing updates on new case law and legislation. – Being part of a larger teams on large transactions including the sale of large scale shopping centres and industrial sites. – Refinancing loan facilities. – Property acquisitions and sales. – Drafting of due diligence reports. – Pro Bono work through MinterEllison’s association with LawRight and the Outreach Legal Clinic.
Do you have any advice for those going through the clerkship process this year? My advice to applicants going through the clerkship process is to attend as many information nights and networking events as possible. When applying for clerkships make sure you know as much about the firm as possible and why you would want to work there. If you are fortunate enough to be successful in a clerkship ensure you are enthusiastic, proactive and get involved in as much as possible.

Volunteer Program: There are a number of ways that you can become part of and assist our organisation. You can apply to volunteer for any of the main divisions; client services, legal assistants and law reform. Each division has a different focus so it is up to the student to decide what area they are most interested in and whether they possess the relevant skills.
The Service recognises the difficulties faced by the LGBTI community and seeks to assist the Queensland LGBTI community to gain access to justice through the provision of legal and social welfare services. We also endeavour to provide community legal education activities and resources in order to increase awareness of legal rights and responsibilities for the LGBTI community in Queensland. The Service includes a law reform division, which is actively involved in advocating for law reform and human rights including:
Client services involves administration work for lawyers during our drop in sessions, legal assistants organise our events and community outreach and law reform involves legal research, writing and advocating for the removal of discriminatory laws.
Expunging past criminal convictions for consensual homosexual relationships; Advocating for the rights of LGBTI families through surrogacy and adoption reform; Unequal age of consent in Queensland; The ‘homosexual advance’ factor of the provocation defence; Supporting gender diverse people; Ending domestic violence and supporting victims; and
The most common areas we provide advice for are family law, domestic violence, surrogacy and parenting rights, criminal law, discrimination, victims support, civil matters, legal issues in relation to government decisions, Centrelink matters, and employment matters. Volunteers will have the opportunity to engage with whatever area of law suits their interests. Application and recruitment process: We encourage students to apply the legal service through our website. After determining their suitability, we will then arrange a casual meeting to explain how the service is run, what is expected of the volunteers and what benefits we can provide them. We will then assign the volunteer to the appropriate team and conduct training based upon the project they will be joining.
Supporting LGBTI students in school and university. Tips for applying: The LGBTI Legal Service Inc. has been established by, and continues to be overseen by a management committee of individuals representing the diverse communities under the LGBTI banner. Who are you and what makes you unique? The Nundah Community Legal Service is operated by the Nundah Community Support Group Inc as an integrated part of the broader Nundah Neighbourhood Centre. We provide all members of the community (especially those most disadvantaged and marginalised) broadly based in the Brisbane North area access to justice through a free, quality often “triage” and sometimes “last resort” generalist legal service. We do this though a weekly Wednesday dropin advice service staffed by dedicated volunteer lawyers and students together with an employed senior daytime solicitor who sees clients by appointment with sufficient time to provide more extensive assistance. As legal problems do not exist in isolation we take a holistic approach and provide effective information on, and practical referrals to, specialist legal and nonlegal services including to financial and personal counselling. We are the only generalist legal service between the Caxton and the Pine Rivers and Moreton Regional Community Legal Centres and while a small service with limited resources, we maintain an active interest and involvement in community legal education and larger issues through our participation in our peak organisations.

Volunteer Program/Application and recruitment process While we have no student employment opportunities, we welcome volunteers including students. There is now often significant competition for student volunteer roles and we presently have a full complement. We commence student recruitment towards the end of the year with an induction to take place in December 2017 for students who will be in at least in second year in 2018. However given circumstances often change, we entertain inquires at any time by contacting the Administrator Jo Money on 3260 4820 legaladmin@nundahcc.org.au.

My goals are clear. We’re achieving them together. ‘I knew where I wanted my early legal career to take me, and the opportunity to practice in a foreign jurisdiction during my international rotation to Singapore was a key milestone. Practicing English law in one of the busiest financial centres in Asia, and negotiating investment between global corporations, was exactly the experience I was looking for. I gained deep insight into my practice group and our key sectors, and gained a vast amount of invaluable experience. Back home, I’m working with the people I met overseas, and in those jurisdictions in which I now have first-hand knowledge. With my early goals fulfilled, I feel more confident that I can achieve the bigger ones.’ Adam Hunter, associate, M&A/Equity capital markets, joined February, 2012
