From your president On behalf of the QUT Law Society, it is my pleasure to introduce to you the 2017 edition of the QUTLS ‘Springboard’ Careers Guide. A QUT law or justice degree is a first class ticket to a myriad of career destinations as it equips students with a skill-set that is highly sought after by employers within any discipline. While many of you may have aspirations to foster a career as a professional lawyer, others may be contemplating an entirely different career path. Looking ahead and planning for success is something that can be lost amidst the amount of work we have on our plates, but it is something that we should all be mindful of. With this in mind, the 2017 QUTLS Careers Guide has been produced to help students gain an understanding of the various opportunities available when faced with the important decision of what career direction to choose beyond university. A career is one of the biggest decisions that most people will ever have to make in their lives and should not be made half-heartedly. As I move into my final year of study, I know that I will be asking myself the following questions: Why did I choose to study law? What area of law am I passionate about? What kind of career will make me want to get up in the morning? Where do I see myself in the short, medium and long-term future and what do I have to do to get there? This year’s Careers Guide contains a number of articles and profiles written by legal professionals as well as a plethora of information and opportunities. The Guide and accompanying publications such as the First Year Guide, serve as invaluable resources and are must-reads for every QUT law student. Don’t forget to mark the Annual QUTLS Meet the Profession on Wednesday 15 March 2017, MinterEllison Women in Law evening on 28 March 2017 and other professional events hosted by the QUTLS in your diaries. These events will provide you with a fantastic opportunity to network with the various professionals you may one day work alongside, and you will also be given the opportunity to meet with some of the contributors and sponsors in this guide. This year’s publication would not be possible without the support of our corporate sponsors. Accordingly, I would like to thank our major sponsors, QUT Practical Legal Training, Thomson Geer, Clayton Utz, MinterEllison, Allens Linklaters, McCullough Robertson and Johnson Winter & Slattery. Finally, I would also like to thank Claudia Choi, our Vice-President of Media and Communication, for her incredible leadership and tireless commitment to ensuring this year’s publication was both timely and comprehensive. I would also like to acknowledge the other members of our Core Executive Committee which consist of: Alastair Page (Executive Vice-President), Sarah Nguyen (Secretary), and Courtney Brown (Treasurer). Without them, this Careers Guide would not be possible.

clerkship and graduate program basics Clerkship Every year, pre-penultimate and penultimate students get the opportunity to put a foot in the door at many law firms. A clerkship is a vacation program that allows students to diversify their legal knowledge through application in practical scenarios over the course of around four weeks (depending on the firm). You can apply for clerkships from March 2017 for placements in the following year. If you are serious about landing a clerkship, you should ensure that you spend time perfecting your application, as firms will receive a number of these. If your cover letter isn’t the best it can be, you will not maximise your chances of securing a position. Your cover letter is designed to give the reader an insight into the best areas of your studies and previous employment history. If you are one of the lucky few who get a clerkship at that firm - congratulations! You will be part of an organisation that will give you an amazing scope of new knowledge and skills. However, if you are not lucky enough to be able to secure a clerkship, don’t stress! Success in the legal industry comes in many different shapes and sizes. Whilst being a clerk provides you with a higher chance of securing a graduate position, there are still alternative pathways to pursue. Graduate Positions A graduate position is a full-time employment opportunity that is offered to commence after your graduation date. Graduate positions are usually offered to students who have previously clerked at the firm, however, many firms also recruit through an open market process. A graduate position is the perfect job to begin your legal career as you are often paired with a mentor or ‘buddy’ for a certain period of time. This mentor can guide you through any difficulties you may face. Applications for graduate positions for many firms open in August this year for intake at the start of the following year. Although this time of year is very common for graduate applications, it is important to remember that graduate positions can arise at any time. If you are unsuccessful in obtaining a graduate position in a top-tier firm, it may be useful to keep an eye out for any opportunities that may arise at mid-tier and boutique law firms. Like clerkships, if you are unsuccessful in securing a graduate opportunity, don’t stress! There is always an alternate pathway to where you want to go. Clerkship and graduate programs can often be an incredibly daunting time - you’re heading out into the real world of legal practice. Unlike an episode of Suits, clerks and graduates don’t always come prepared for what the job may throw at them. Although you won’t have Louis Litt scolding you for poor performance and inefficiency, it is always better to come into a new position with knowledge and tips. For that reason, we have asked some QUT law students who have clerked recently about their experiences (see page 9).

Comments from clerks & graduates Maddie Depace “Being a clerk was a significant learning curve - it meant putting my years of study into practice. I have learnt to always carry a notepad and pen around the office because lawyers can spring work on you at any time. When taking notes, make sure you record them clearly and ask for clarification if there is anything you are unsure about. Lawyers run on deadlines, so make sure you ask them when they need a task completed by and if it’s urgent. This will help you prioritise your workload - a must have skill! Also, don’t forget to ask for the file number!” Georgia Starky “I can safely say I learnt more about the legal profession and working as a lawyer in my four week clerkship than I did in two years of studying straight law. My legal research and communication skills greatly improved and I was able to see first hand how vital these skills are, rather than actual knowledge of the law. My advice is to be upfront and proactive in communicating with the lawyers giving you work – if you already have a couple of urgent tasks, tell them you don’t have capacity right now. If you don’t understand a task, ask the lawyer right away – they will appreciate this far more than if you come back 10 minutes later with a bunch of questions or if you misinterpret the question and waste time doing the task wrong. Also don’t feel bad about leaving on time – if you’ve finished your work, go home!” Anonymous Graduate Student “Back in law school I would roll my eyes or let out an involuntary groan whenever I heard anything to do with wellness. It didn’t seem relevant to me, most probably because I was for the most part happy and well. Now, one year into my graduate program at a top tier law firm – the importance of it has increased multiple-fold. I’m working in a high pressure and all encompassing work environment, with driven and intelligent people and there are days, weeks and months where I feel enormous amounts of self-doubt, displacement and pretension. In trying to reconcile these feelings, I’ve come to appreciate how essential self-care is and communing with others who you identify with and offer support.”

interview tips We’ve all heard about how hard it is to get a position in a law firm – regardless of whether you’re a clerk or a graduate. There can often be a significant amount of candidates for only a handful of positions. It is critical at the interview stage to make a positive and lasting impression on the interviewer so you are able to stand out among the crowd. To ensure you are putting your best foot forward, follow these interview tips. 1. Research The Firm Before you head into your interview, make sure you adequately research the firm. You never know what questions the interviewer may ask. You might be asked express why you are interested in their practice areas, or how you can make a difference within their firm. The information you will find will also empower you to formulate effective answers to any question they may throw at you. 2. Understand the role When interviewing for clerkships and graduate positions, the importance of understanding the role can often be overlooked. A substantial amount of applicants often consider a clerkship or a graduate position as a generic opportunity that is offered as standard across firms. However, the role can vary across different firms and across different industries. As you can see in this guide, law firms are not the only companies who offer clerkship and graduate opportunities. A solid understanding of the role you are applying for will assist you in providing tailored responses to any interview question. Often around this time of year, firms will be interviewing a fair amount of people. The best weapon you could have to stand out is tailored responses. 3. Prepare Preparation is the key to a successful interview. The biggest negative indicator that can show an interviewer that you are not the right person for the job is an inability to directly and concisely answer interview questions. If you spend at least 10 minutes prior to an interview researching commonly asked interview questions for the position you are going for, you will have a great advantage over other applicants who haven’t prepared as such. You should also be prepared to not only answer a question but link it to your experience and the position you are applying for. For example, a question about how you can interact with clients can relate to past customer service experience, and your ability to carry out the position by being personable in a professional environment. 4. Ask Questions Asking questions shows the interviewer that you are interested in the position, and that you are knowledgeable about the job itself. Always have a couple of questions prepared to ask that suits the tone of the interview. A good starting point is to ask about the corporate culture of the workplace. Otherwise, you may have questions arise during the course of the interview that you can ask at the end. It is critical to remember that there are some questions that portray you as an unfavourable candidate. For example, question that relate to pay, other candidates and career progression can indicate a lack of passion for the job advertised. If you follow these four tips, in addition to your own interview research, you will be able to put yourself in the best possible position for that dream clerkship or graduate position. 10
As a junior lawyer, your enthusiasm is in overdrive. Everything is interesting. You have a million questions for everyone. You want to be the best. And for me, I wanted to be the best lawyer and leader I could be. Right now I’m a corporate and tax lawyer, buying and selling companies, structuring investments and having the occasional battle with the ATO.
STAY TRUE.
So, a little while after I started at Clayton Utz, I joined the social committee. A powerful assembly fuelled by lunchtime pizzawielding lawyers making important decisions like choosing the Christmas party theme. They knew I liked pizza, but had no idea I was gay. You see, I wasn’t out at work yet and this became a genuine source of anxiety for a good two years. But In May 2015 this all changed... To listen to Luke’s full story, go to: claytonutz.com/graduates Academic brilliance certainly counts, but graduates who thrive here have something extra – a natural passion for connecting with people and a strong sense of self. That’s what staying true is all about. If you have these qualities, Clayton Utz is for you.

A LAW FIRM AS INDIVIDUAL AS YOU. WWW.CORRS.COM.AU/GRADUATES
Corrs is a different kind of law firm and a different kind of employer. Our culture celebrates individuals who can bring unique experiences and perspectives to the table. We want big picture thinkers and we invest heavily in our people with genuine opportunities for personal and professional growth. It’s why we’re consistently rated as an award-winning employer. At Corrs, you can make an immediate impact working on some of the biggest deals in the Asia Pacific. And you’ll be guided by some of Australia’s leading lawyers every step of the way.
GENEVA SEKULA At the start of 2015 when my law school was abuzz with the prospect of completing clerkships, I had not decided if I was even going to apply. I had heard a lot about cocktail nights and canapés and interviews, but I didn’t know much about what completing a clerkship actually entailed or why I should sacrifice my beloved summer holidays to do one. Having spent the summer at Allens, I can definitely recommend doing a clerkship. It’s an invaluable way to see the inner workings of a commercial firm.
opportunity to experience first-hand how commercial law operates in a different legal system. I had some memorable experiences zipping through Saigon traffic on a motorbike and visiting tourist hotspots; certainly different to the weekends I would have been having at home! Although I didn’t come back particularly fluent in business Vietnamese, I definitely came home with a broader international perspective on commercial law, and felt privileged to have been able to experience life in one of the Asian offices.
I was unspeakably nervous on the first day of my first rotation. I had never worked in a law firm before and I was concerned that I didn’t remember an awful lot from my first year Contracts class at university. I needn’t have worried. That first day I hardly got through any work because the people in my team kept stopping by to say hello, have a chat and see how I was going with everything. I was amazed at how genuinely interested everyone was in getting to know me and making sure I was feeling confident in my work.
I was exposed to lots of different work during my time at Allens. I helped to draft letters, write research memos, conduct title searches, proofread contracts, and attend meetings, among many other things. But the summer was much more than simply doing a job. It was an opportunity to learn the ins and outs of the firm and we went to a number of seminars which helped to shed more light on the culture of the firm. We heard about Allens’ pro bono work and presence in the community and about the alliance with Linklaters, we heard from a panel of partners who gave us insight into their career progression with the firm, and we heard from a panel of graduates who answered any and all of our questions. I attended Christmas parties (yes, plural), was invited to welcome yum cha, and had many, many coffee catch-ups with lawyers and other clerks. Beyond the legal work and the firm, the clerkship is a great way to expand your social networks. We also went to inter-firm trivia nights and the clerk cruise, and had lots of other opportunities to get to know each other, and the clerks at other firms.
This was indicative of the wider culture of the firm and I was deeply impressed by how supportive and enthusiastic everyone was, and how much time the lawyers were willing to take to explain tasks to me or answer my questions. The firm instigates a formal support network with a buddy, development lawyer and supervising partner, which was a great source of comfort and helped to keep me on track. But, beyond that, there were plenty of lawyers who were keen to get involved with the clerkship and offer their help and feedback. One of the reasons I decided to go to Allens was because I saw it as a firm where there would be opportunities to work overseas, and having an international dimension to my career was important to me. I hadn’t ever guessed that my first chance to travel with Allens would be in my sixth week working for the firm. After the Christmas break, instead of boarding a train to Wynyard, I found myself boarding a plane to Ho Chi Minh City where I was to complete a three-week rotation. The Ho Chi Minh City office was very different to the Sydney office. For one thing, it was a lot smaller, and the contracts were in both Vietnamese and English. I had an amazing time in Vietnam experiencing different food and a different culture, but also having the
Allens is a firm full of opportunities. In 10 weeks I travelled internationally, went on an overnight trip to a client office, went on a tour of a coalmine, experienced a Women at Allens panel, visited the Sydney Children’s Hospital, and had the chance to work on pro bono matters. I can’t tell you exactly what to expect from an Allens clerkship, because you never know what opportunities will be there for you to take. The clerkship program gives you the chance to peer inside a commercial firm and to think about your future. I loved my time with the firm and can’t wait to start my career. A clerkship with Allens feels like unlocking the door to an incredible future and I would recommend it to anyone.

YOUR SEASONAL CLERKSHIP AT CORRS: TIPS & TRAPS OFFICE ETIQUETTE Tips
Tips
Be conscious of your surroundings in an open plan environment. If you are on a long phone call or having a lengthy discussion, consider moving to a breakout room. Say good morning to everyone when you arrive. Check-in before you leave to see if you can assist further.
All firms have a style guide. Use it for everything! When drafting, perform a search in the system for similar documents to use as a guide.
Traps In open plan, your team members are more easily accessible. It’s easy to fall into the trap of approaching them for everything – exercise your judgement and only approach when necessary.
E-ETIQUETTE Tips Add addressees last, in case you hit send before you’re ready. Before sending an email, ask yourself, ‘would I be comfortable if the CEO read this?’ Use Instant Messaging (IM) for quick questions to peers and buddies.
Traps Not using an appropriate salutation and sign off. As a general rule, avoid ‘hey’ and ‘cheers’. Beware of ‘reply all’ - we all know someone who has been caught out! Use judgement when using IM for senior lawyers and partners – think, have they sent you an IM before?
RECEIVING INSTRUCTIONS Tips Always bring a pen and paper. Repeat instructions back to confirm you understand the task. Ask questions like ‘how long should this take me?’ or ‘how long should this memo be?’ This will help you to schedule your time and track your progress.
W FIRM VIDUAL YOU. Traps
You are expected to have questions, but first consider the answer or solution yourself. For example, ‘I researched X and think the answer is Y, am I on the right path?’ versus ‘I am stuck, what is the answer?’ Not considering context – understanding the context of a task will help you determine your writing style and broaden your understanding of the task. Ask ‘what is the purpose of this memo/email?’ Not being enthusiastic about each task. Enthusiasm about even the most menial task demonstrates your passion for law and that you are a team player.
WWW.CORRS.COM.AU 3460-9074-4067
LEGAL WRITING
Traps Trying to sound like a ‘lawyer’. Our clients expect advice in plain English. Not dedicating time to proofread and spell check – don’t let typos bring your quality of work down!
PRIORITISING Tips Communicate your task list to your mentor or buddy; they are aware of the group’s priorities and will help you determine what should be done first. Check-in with your instructing lawyer regularly, eg daily, on how you are progressing with your task. Use your calendar to record due dates and set reminders for yourself.
Traps Not communicating to your mentor or buddy when you feel under pressure. Not being realistic about your own timeframes. If you have many tasks to do, say, ‘thank you for giving me this task, however I do have X tasks to complete by Friday. Can I complete this task for you on Monday?’
FEEDBACK Tips Be comfortable to ask for feedback from your instructing lawyer. You don’t need to wait for them to approach you. It can be as simple as saying ‘when you have a moment, I’d really appreciate feedback on X task’. Source your own feedback by critically reviewing the final version of your work to learn what was changed, and ask why.
Traps Taking constructive criticism personally. Not learning from, or implementing feedback. Create a list of your feedback and review the key points against your work before submitting it.
A FINAL WORD Your fellow seasonal clerks are your allies. Communicate and learn from each other’s experiences – chances are you will bump into your fellow clerks throughout your career!

CLERKSHIPS A four week clerkship at JWS is unique from the typical commercial firm experience. Rather than spending your time confined to just one practice group, you will work across groups and with a variety of senior practitioners. During my clerkship, I gained exposure to matters emanating from Energy & Resources, Corporate, Competition, Regulatory and Dispute Resolution. Additionally, I worked collaboratively with the Perth office given the broad geographic nature of a particular client’s activities. In your first few days as a clerk, you will partake in a comprehensive induction programme to introduce you to the firm, its people, and its processes. As someone who had never worked in a law firm, these sessions were invaluable in easing my transition. They also demonstrated JWS’ commitment to ensuring that my four week experience would be as fruitful as possible. The work I was involved in was both challenging and interesting. While there is always support in place, JWS gives you plenty of ‘rope’ to take charge of your work and see it through to completion. During my clerkship, the tasks I was assigned included analysing and reporting on the effects of certain amending legislation, drafting a shareholder’s agreement following a review of a client’s existing arrangements, reviewing a share sale agreement, conducting both legal and non-legal research, and drafting a memorandum outlining a client’s legislative obligations. At each step along the way, there was an ‘open door’ policy whenever I needed guidance from the partners, as well as ample constructive feedback. Following the completion of my clerkship, JWS offered me a graduate position which I readily accepted. With a higher ratio of senior practitioners to junior lawyers than other commercial firms, JWS provides superior opportunities to learn and work closely alongside some of Australia’s most talented lawyers. THOMSON GEER CLERKSHIP – AN INSIGHT Alexandra Meeuwsen - Graduate Lawyer
A clerkship with Thomson Geer is a great way to gain an insight into the operation of a successful, fully integrated national corporate law firm and what it can offer you in your career You are given the opportunity to learn from and work with lawyers and partners who are continually recognised locally and nationally for their knowledge and expertise in their respective fields. Thomson Geer values and invests in continued development and training for their practitioners. Opportunities are regularly offered and include training in hard skills, such as technical use of software, and soft skills, such as conflict resolution training and managing work life balance. Thomson Geer offers in-house continued professional development and encourages involvement with relevant professional organisations and associations. But don’t worry, it’s not all work and no play. We have weekly drinks on Friday night, which provides an opportunity to get to know each other socially and professionally. We have a Social Club that arranges various events throughout the year including quiz nights, wine tours, cocktail nights and a Mid-Year Ball. The Clerkship The four week clerkship program begins with induction. It was evident from the outset just how invested Thomson Geer was in our development. These first few days we heard from current graduate lawyers about the firm culture and general practical expectations. It was nice to have advice and reassurance from people who had been in our position only 12 months before. More senior lawyers from each department also provided insight into their practice area and the type of work they do. This gave a clear picture of the services we offer and the diversity of our clients. Clerks are assigned a practice area and supervising partner but are encouraged to experience work with other teams. During my clerkship I worked in the Property team but also assisted the Corporate, Tax and Employment teams. The opportunity to experience multiple practice areas was extremely beneficial and allowed me to reflect on areas of practice I would consider pursuing. The types of work that the clerks were given included drafting, reviewing transactional documents, researching and drafting memos, attending client meetings, discovery and attending court. The work you do is real and worthwhile. We were supported throughout our clerkship including weekly meetings with HR to debrief and raise any concerns. We were each assigned a mentor who worked in our practice group – my mentor was a great support and gave lots of practical assistance. He was always approachable and made time for any queries I had. The Graduate Program Graduates at Thomson Geer are recruited straight from the clerkship program. The graduate program runs for 12 months, including rotations in different practice areas. Graduates are assigned a mentor, who guides you in relation to your work and performance. You are also assigned a buddy, who is generally another young lawyer, to offer support and advice more generally about being a young lawyer and the transition from University to working life. The firm encourages graduates to become involved in matters and to engage directly with clients. The training is also ongoing with New Lawyer Training sessions being run every month or so to assist the graduates to learn practical skills. These sessions were based on topics such as drafting, court appearances and how to manage files. The most valuable aspect of the graduate program is the rotations. As a young lawyer you are able to learn new legal skills and knowledge from different teams and then take that experience into the practice area in which you ultimately practice. Reviews are also offered quarterly through the graduate program. These reviews allow you to implement and act upon constructive advice before your conclusion with the practice area. The review process is a valuable part of your continued development. Participating in the clerkship and graduate programs at Thomson Geer, whilst at times challenging, is very rewarding. I encourage you all to apply for a clerkship with Thomson Geer and wish you the best of luck with your applications.
