THE OFFICIAL PRINT MEDIA STUDENT ORGANIZATION OF UM TAGUM COLLEGE AUGUST 2014

by: Jherine Nikki Hazel Dalaygon & Beth S. Daduplo Oh heart that kindles in this blissful night. My mind remembers the twilight of changes and new circumstances. An era before students and strangers start entering the vicinity of UM Tagum College and eons before sundown that would signal the commencement of the most prestigious pageant in the entire institution, I have arrived with a palpitating heart. Feeling panicky, I think of only one notion. This will be the ultimate night that holds the pinnacle of the whole event. The end that will launch a new chapter for the most fortunate damsel. All the while, I was uttering my own prayer, seeking guidance and strength from the Creator above. Eventually we were called for the production number with the UMTC Dance Company and the reigning Mutya ng UM 2013 together with the first and second runners up. I danced and smiled in front of the audience, moving with the flow and beat of the music. After the candidates showed their explicit performance and after the bewitching part of the Mutyas the time to introduce ourselves has come. I put on my best smile. “Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. I am Lovely Jane Omega, 20 years of age from the Criminal Justice Education.” The playsuit followed. Eighteen captivating candidates showcased their sexy bodies in a white bikini top and silver fitting shorts. I’ve got seventeen competitors to outdo, so I have to put on my sexiest face, sway my body charmingly and hopefully hypnotize the judges. Prancing sensually around the stage, I gave my best in every determined step I take. As soon as I exited the stage after the final march with all the candidates, I quickly re-switched into a bright blue gown. At this juncture, I have to exhibit my elegance and grace in my evening gown. Craned by thousands. Judged by thousands and five. But there’s only one thing that remained in the midst of this journey; one who wants to wear the crown, bears the weight of the crown. Close to victory. A new road opened when the numerical symbol which is pinned on the textile I was wearing echoed deeply in my eardrums. This is it.. “At your young age, what lesson in life have you learned so far and why?” Perhaps, I have to sneak for a second in the contest proper to retrace what I’ve learned so far. Well, I did. Somehow, even a millisecond became a year to reap my eruditions in life. “I have learned how to be strong

in spite of all difficulties in life.” Evidently, there’s no person who lives a life so august. “Behind all the difficulties, challenges and trials in life, always remember that there is success behind it.” My response may be as simple as ABC; easy to utter, yet hard to empathize. After taking the hardest part of the contest, I need to rest for a while, and take a deep respiratory process. The judgement has come, but it doesn’t require gaining or losing hope. Gathering their 2, 450likes in a social medium are just that hard but ‘twas never been too intricate for Kate Malugon from the High School department. True beauty lies inside and blooms in a cold morning like a baby’s breath. Bringing out every bit of loveliness on a photo paper as what Phoebe Sotto, an Accounting student has proven as she shone in her utmost projection that made her as the Photographer’s Choice. Meanwhile, all of us delivered our finest tiptoed walk along the platform. But Rica Jane Barbarona of the Teacher’s Education edict all along creating her own fad in casual wear, playsuit and even in her elegant gold gown. Moreover, competitions do not develop one to oppose with others. It is an alternative gateway of building friendship manifested by Stephen Kaye Tesoro from the HRM department. While I, almost forgetting myself, was recognized as the best performer. Being happy for my new comrades, Phoebe Sotto, awarded as the fourth runner-up followed by Jessel Mae Hombaya topped as third runner up, both from the College of Accounting Technology. Afterwards, yells and shouts from the College of Arts and Sciences quaked the whole venue when Jasmine Gasendo ranked as second runner up. While Kate Nalugon hailed first runner up, carrying the banner of the babies, the High School department, landed on the second spot right before and close to the coveted title, the Mutya ng UMTC 2014. The five of us were left in silence. The crowd became wilder.. Now four have been providentially named their respective places. And five remains for one more place. One crown remains without a bearer and it cannot be shared by the five of us. Only one. Only one. Only one. “... Candidate number one!” What!? What have I just heard? “Congratulations, Mutya ng UMTC 2014, candidate number one, Lovely Jane Omega of the Criminal Justice Education!” An onslaught of emotions surmounted within me. This is definitely an evening of tears and joy. Anyhow, in a battlefield, there’s always a winner and more winners for there are no losers as long as one played well and lasted the game. For those who quit are the only losers. Tonight a Mutya was born and tomorrow she will wake up as a full grown role model in the academe with her feet affixed on the ground.
