preface

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the World Dog Show 2018 in Amsterdam. Hosting a world dog show is an honour seldom bestowed on the Netherlands. It has already been sixteen years, in 2002, since we last had the opportunity of organising this event. You will appreciate that we are very excited to once again, in 2018, undertake this honourable assignment! The motto of the World Dog Show 2018, Show The World Your Talent, clearly did not fall on deaf ears. While in 2002 the organisation was happy with 14,500 entries, this year looks to be far exceeding 30,000! Not only are many thousands of exhibitors and their dogs preparing to give their all, but the city of Amsterdam is also exercising its usual magnetic impact on visitors from abroad. The city itself has indeed pledged its cooperation for which we are most grateful. In addition, the organisation is delighted with the generous support it has received from a large number of external parties and advertisers and also with the hundreds of trade stand exhibitors who will present their goods and services during the event. We are thrilled with the excellent standard of organisation achieved by the World Dog Show 2018 Foundation - a large, closely-knit group of professionals and a much larger group of dedicated volunteers who have worked tirelessly to make the World Dog Show 2018 a resounding success. The efforts of all these individuals with a shared passion for dogs have resulted in a formidable achievement for which I would like to extend a special word of thanks!

Jack Alberts

A dog show of this magnitude brings with it huge responsibility. With this in mind, the health and welfare of all participating dogs must and shall take priority. The Dog Welfare Team will be present and will ensure strict enforcement of this principle. Further, the international team of judges will judge not only dogs’ exteriors but also explicitly whether or not each presented dog is ‘fit for function’. And what about the thousands of visitors, exhibitors and their dogs? They all need to eat, drink, sleep and move safely and freely in and around the city. In cooperation with the Amsterdam RAI Exhibition and Convention Centre, the municipality, the police and the catering sector, the organisation has gone to great lengths to achieve smooth operation in regard to every detail. Everything is thus in place to ensure that the World Dog Show 2018 becomes a memorable experience for everyone involved. Show The World Your Talent is clearly a very appropriate motto for this splendid event. I wish you lots of enjoyment!

Jack Alberts, President Dutch Kennel Club ‘Raad van Beheer’

preface

Dear Friends and Colleagues, A very warm welcome to the record breaking WORLD DOG SHOW 2018, which we are delighted to host in the Rai Expo Centre in the heart of Amsterdam. We look forward to working together to stage an exceptional and memorable event worthy of the title of ‘World Show’. When the process of bidding for the right to hold the show takes place, you cannot imagine the possible size of the entry which we have now achieved and that has probably exceeded many people’s expectations. From the Benelux Winner to the world show itself, you have accepted our invitation to ‘show the world your talent!’ What a week of shows and events we have in store and we thank you all for your support, and also your patience as we stage what is one of the biggest ever entries for a FCI world show. In fact the number of entries across all the shows (World Show, Benelux and Specialities) is a staggering number. We will have in four days 33,500 dogs making it the largest dog show exhibition in the world. We are pleased also that the Benelux show is the highest ever entry for that special show too.

Gerard Jipping

From the main show activities and breed rings to all the other aspects of the event, dog enthusiasts from around the world will gather throughout these days sharing their love of dogs in every way possible. For those who love statistics, the fantastic total of 362 different breeds and varieties will be on show coming from 72 different countries with a judging panel drawn from 50 different countries of the world. This is truly a WORLD show in every sense of the word. To my team who have put this event together, my sincere thanks for your hard work and dedication, and the same sentiments to our exhibitors, judges, trade stands and sponsors, press, vets, volunteers and anyone connected with any aspect of the show. Without you all, a world event of this size and nature would not be possible. A word also for our fellow FCI members and representatives present in Amsterdam; you are all very welcome and trust you will enjoy our world show and of course famous Dutch hospitality. So, let the show begin! Good luck to all exhibitors and judges. It is of paramount importance to show awareness for the wellbeing and health of your dogs both in and out of the ring. Enjoy the show with respect for your judges’ decisions and of course your fellow competitors and remember that the best dog always goes home with you!

HEALTH, WELLBEING & ZERO TOLERANCE

Dutch law is applicable to dogs entering the Netherlands from abroad. All dogs must be chipped, adequately vaccinated or have undergone serum antibody titer testing. All relevant results must be recorded in a European pet passport, or official documents, validated by a practising veterinary surgeon and showing the final validity dates.

ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY

Dogs with cropped ears are not permitted to enter shows in the Netherlands, regardless of their country of origin. Dogs with docked tails are currently only permitted to enter shows in the Netherlands if this took place for medical reasons. There are no entry restrictions for dogs with docked tails coming from countries where tail docking is currently allowed.

The organisation of the World Dog Show 2018 (WDS), as well as the Benelux Winner and the breed group specialties, regards the safety of dogs and people to be of paramount importance. In the event of any misbehaviour the following zero tolerance measures will apply.

A team of veterinarians is available on the show site.

If an exhibitor, handler or visitor behaves seriously inappropriately, the organisation will take immediate measures.

CANINE CARE TEAM

Incidents such as leaving a dog unattended in a vehicle (regardless of the outside temperature), fighting or threatening behaviour will be dealt with severely.

Because the health and welfare of dogs is very important, the Dog Welfare Team of the Dutch Kennel Club keeps a close eye on the welfare of the dogs during the World Dog Show. The team does this in and around the RAI Exhibition Center where the World Dog Show is held. Among other things, they pay attention to the fact that dogs do not sit in a bench for too long, do not have to stand on a (trim) table for too long, can have fresh drinking water and dogs cannot be treated roughly.

When such incidents occur, the following measures will be taken: • Dogs will be withdrawn from the competition and any points or titles will also be withdrawn. This applies to all dogs entered or shown by the exhibitor and/or handler; • Disqualification by the judge of all dogs belonging to the exhibitor involved and/or handler; • Entry to the four show days will be barred.

There is also close cooperation with the local police in Amsterdam. If the team determines that the welfare of a dog may be at stake, a report will be made. Depending on the severity, appropriate measures are taken. This can mean, for example, a disqualification of the dog for the event. Pinch collars are legally forbidden, even for foreign visitors. This is also checked during the World Dog Show.

In addition, the person involved will be suspended so preventing participation in the remaining and future shows. A complaint will also be submitted to the disciplinary committee of the Dutch Kennel Club ‘Raad van Beheer’, with a plea for disqualification of the person.

Hans-Erhard Grüttner Judge Best in Show Benelux Winner Show

In the world of show dogs I have been very actively involved since 1972 when I got my very first Irish Terrier. My first litter was born with the “Emsmuehle” prefix in 1977. Since then I have bred more than 190 Champions in different parts of the world. It includes English Champions, International Champions, World Winner, some Crufts Winners and Best in Show Winners as well. I am still loyal to the breed. Together with my wife, I published two books about the Irish Terrie in 1998 and 2011. In 2007, the VDH awarded me the Baron von Gingins-Memorial-Medal. This is the highest cynology honors, the Association awards for outstanding contribution to the promotion of the breed. In 1992, I got my judge license for the Terrier breeds. I am approved as an All Breed Judge (Allrounder) from the German Kennel Club (VDH) and the Federation Cynology International (FCI) in 2012. Since then, I have received many invitations from around the world and have judged at the most prestigious shows.

Rony Doedijns, in his element in the dog world Judge Best in Show World Dog Show 2018

He bred a number of Finnish Spitz litters under the kennel name Saimaan but came to realise that he would need to make certain choices if he were to further and fulfil his ambitions. His decision to develop judging skills was indeed taken deliberately and seriously. Working in the show ring is one aspect which Rony, as an avid networker, took very seriously. “I had the opportunity of working in the ring with prominent judges such as Joe Braddon, Ivan Swedrup, Bobby James, Stanley Dangerfield, Hans Lethinen and Pamela Cross Stern. When you were in the ring with them and asked a question they would give you an explanation.” Rony would save to memory, as it were, their opinions along with those of many others. In that respect he resembles a computer, saving all the collected data. Whoever asks him a question now is assured of an explanation, and by no means a brief one.

To present a brief portrayal of a person’s activities in the canine world is an impossible mission when it’s about Rony Doedijns. This young, Dutch, allround judge born in 1966 already has a resumé which would easily fill many pages. The highlight of his career to date is Best in Show judge at the World Dog Show 2018 in Amsterdam.

In 1982, when Rony was 16, he visited a dog show with a breed which he had carefully chosen: a Finnish Spitz, given to him by his parents. Thirty-five years later he still regards it as his favourite breed. Why? “What attracted me most to the Scandinavian spitz breeds, and still does, is their independent nature. These are squarely-built dogs without exaggeration. Lovely, wedge-shaped heads and eyes which reflect their mood.” Rony’s first dog was named Kalevala-Pohjola Björn Bjarmi. Shows and breeding marked the beginning of an impressive career in the dog world.

Dutch training courses to qualify as a show judge are said to be some of the best in the world. In any case, Rony soon passed his first judging examination and dozens more followed.

Rony’s education and subsequent career (he was manager with a leading retail organisation in the Netherlands for entrepreneurs) were certainly important, but his activities in the dog world began to take up an increasing amount of his spare time.

“Judging is a great activity. When I’m focused on a breed it’s almost an art form.”

52

“My interest in the canine world has always been purposefully comprehensive.”

Subsequent years were characterised by courses, examinations, observation, learning, board activities and organisational work. Breed associations often indicated Rony as their preferred candidate for breed examinations; he was, after all, well known for critique writing and stewarding in the ring. My interest in the canine world has always been deliberately comprehensive, says Rony. Rony’s partner is Arno, manager within a biotechnology company for hematologic malignancies. So as to be able to identify with Rony’s hobby, he took all the necessary exams to qualify as a show judge, even though he has no ambition to actually judge. On 17 May 2007 the Dutch Kennel Club ‘Raad van Beheer’ appointed Rony as allround show judge, thus becoming the Netherlands’ third judge to be bestowed with this honour and certainly the youngest. At that moment, Rony had taken the largest number of exams in all ten FCI breed groups. His allrounder status was by no means handed to him on a silver platter. During an interview in 2007 when he was asked to name the worst characteristic a judge could have, he immediately answered: self doubt. Exhibitors who find themselves in the company of Rony in the BIS ring at the World Dog Show will certainly not be confronted with a hesitant judge. They will discover someone with the proverbial ‘eye for a dog’ who in recent years has judged in more than 60 countries all over the world. Rony is in his element in the show ring. In 2013 a vacancy arose for the position of director (CEO) of the Dutch Kennel Club. Following a strict application procedure Rony was appointed to the position, one which suits him down to the ground and which, more than ever, immerses him in the canine world - at global level too. During 9-12 August the Dutch Kennel Club ‘Raad van Beheer’ is organising the World Dog Show (WDS) 2018 in the Netherlands. The ten group winners will come together in

the main ring and Rony Doedijns will select Best in Show. The board invited him to carry out this special task – a huge honour for this relatively young but extremely experienced and talented dog lover. A massive responsibility indeed; he will be watched by tens of thousands of people from all over the world.

ABOUT THE DUTCH KENNEL CLUB ‘RAAD VAN BEHEER’

There are about 1.5 million dogs in the Netherlands. About half a million of those belong to one of the approximately 300 recognised breeds. Roughly 1 in 5 households owns one or more dogs. The Dutch Kennel Club ‘Raad van Beheer’, founded in 1901, is the largest organisation promoting responsible dog ownership. To ensure effectivity, the organisation is engaged in ongoing dialogue with its members and stakeholders at all levels, but also with politicians, government, organisations with a public function, knowledge institutions and trade and industry.

Dutch Kennel Club on such aspects as identification and registration of purebred dogs, issue of pedigrees, registration of health results, policy on dog health, behaviour and welfare, training for instructors and judges and other officials, and provision of support to member associations in such areas as dog sport, competitions, shows and general club matters. The Dutch Kennel Club has a team of specially-trained ‘chippers’ who visit the roughly 6500 litters born each year to breeders of purebred dogs in the Netherlands. Every young puppy is chipped and at the same time the chipper takes a DNA sample for a parentage check. Each year the Dutch Kennel Club registers more than 36,000 purebred puppies born in the Netherlands.

The Kennel Club unites 300 associations where more than 120,000 canine enthusiasts actively pursue all facets of dog ownership and canine-related activities. These member associations are the first port of call for anyone considering owning a dog, looking for dog training classes and numerous other activities. These clubs provide a stimulating, social and knowledgeable environment for like-minded individuals.

The Dutch Kennel Club ‘Raad van Beheer’ upholds a comprehensive social vision on canine affairs encompassing all aspects of the relationship between humans and dogs, purebred or otherwise. Focus is not only on breeding but also on all aspects of health and welfare. As a result, health, welfare and social integration of dogs are core issues. Only once these are firmly in place can focus shift to other aspects of breeding and dog ownership. Our vision extends to and includes all forms of dog sport which is why this, too, is an important area to the Dutch Kennel Club.

The 300 member associations are made up of: - 200 breed clubs which promote the interests of one or more breeds. These provide information to interested parties about the specific breed or breeds whose interests they promote. Many breed clubs provide information on available puppies as well as a list of breeders who comply with the club’s breeding regulations; - 70 regional clubs/canine clubs which provide training classes and various forms of dog sports; - 10 specialist associations such as the Dutch Show Judges Club.

The motto of the Dutch Kennel Club ‘Raad van Beheer’ is ‘Passion for dogs’.

These associations elect a national board of seven members at the General Assembly. The office of the Dutch Kennel Club supports the board in its development and implementation of policy. About forty staff members work at the office of the

A multistakeholder approach

Fair Breeding Pla n The healthy and social dog in The Netherlands

Health and welfare issues associated with the breeding of dogs is a challenging international problem and one which extends beyond a country’s borders. Only international cooperation will bring about a rapid solution. The Dutch Fair-breed (Fairfok) project plan (2014) in which all stakeholders are working together in order to bring about healthy and sociable Dutch dogs is clearly achieving results. It is time to go international: World Wide Welfare, what can you do for dogs?

Look-alikes We are not dealing only with exaggeration of exterior characteristics but also inherited disorders. These are problems found not only in pedigree dogs but also among so-called look-alikes, dogs which resemble a particular breed but without a pedigree. When a breed gains in popularity, commercial dog breeders take advantage and breed for financial gain. To these people, rules for responsible breeding are of less importance; after all, even if breeders fail to comply with the rules many people still want these dogs. In addition to commercial breeding, the import of look-alikes from abroad is booming business.

Broad-based support You will appreciate that the problems are complex and diverse. All the parties involved in the Fair-breed (Fairfok) project plan are aware of the complexity and while contributing their expertise and experience are working together toward a solution. As a result, the project is benefiting from exceptionally broad-based support with input from every possible angle. Only in this manner can a solution to the problems related to dog breeding come to fruition. The Fair-breed (Fairfok) project plan focuses on a number of areas: responsible breeding, education and provision of information, and a plan of action concerning inherited disorders.

About ten years ago, a heated social debate sprang up in countries all over the world about the health and welfare of pedigree dogs. The general consensus was that largely because of one-sided breeding for exterior characteristics, but also as a result of inbreeding in small and closed populations, purebred dogs were, by nature, unhealthy and owning one was asking for trouble. In short, the image of the purebred dog shifted from ‘a responsible choice’ to ‘heading for trouble’.

Fair-breed (Fairfok) project plan The Dutch Kennel Club ‘Raad van Beheer’, umbrella organisation for Dutch canine affairs, acknowledged the problems and took the lead in the belief that the canine world owed this to purebred dogs. With behaviour, health and welfare in mind, in 2014 we launched the Fair-breed (Fairfok) project plan aimed at bringing about healthy and sociable dogs in the Netherlands. We obviously could not work on our own which is why we sought and received assistance from various parties within the sector. Government, science, education, trade and industry and organisations with a public function are now working together toward a common goal.

Responsible breeding Breeders must select carefully parent dogs they use for breeding. They should take into account not only the construction and exterior of the dog but also its behaviour. And in addition to the heritability of desirable exterior characteristics they should also consider the risk of inherited defects. Subsequently, they should raise puppies in a safe and sound environment and ensure effective socialisation. Finally, breeders are responsible for selecting the right puppy for the right owner! Throughout the entire process breeders receive the support from other disciplines within the Fair-breed (Fairfok) project plan.

62

Strategy concerning inherited disorders The Dutch Kennel Club ‘Raad van Beheer’ The Dutch Kennel Club checks the parentage of all pedigree puppies by taking DNA samples, a procedure carried out by a specially-trained team of individuals who visit breeders and their litters all over the country. This enables us to know which dogs reside and are registered in our country, but also provides insight into blood lines including into the presence of any heritable disorders. Registering of characteristics is essential to sound breeding policy.

Breed associations Breed associations draw up a breeding policy, identify any current issues within the population and prioritise toward the desired goal. They also raise the alarm when responsible breeding is no longer possible within a given population. A number of Dutch breed associations have indeed already indicated that breeding within the current, closed population is causing problems and in order to continue breeding would like to outcross so as to ensure greater, and essential, genetic diversity within the breed. They then draw up a plan and select with great care a number of dogs of a different breed. They subsequently select individuals with the desirable characteristics. Because an individual from a different breed is to be used and not an entire population, it is possible to select strictly according to the desirable traits. It is therefore important to use a stable, fertile and sound dog with no known heritable disorders which may be present in the breed.

Science Universities are supporting the Fair-breed (Fairfok) project plan. Wageningen University & Research (WUR) calculates populations for inbreeding and relatedness and thus provides recommendations for future breeding. The Utrecht University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is working hard to develop an instrument – in the current pilot stage only for one Dutch breed – which will provide breeders with advice about their females. This instrument takes into account health testing for parent dogs, as well as optimal genetic diversity within the breed. Cutting-edge science available to every breeder!

Education and information Veterinarians have an important role. They should be sure to provide information to breeders as well as to owners. In this regard, veterinarians sometimes need additional training in the area of inherited disorders but also on the issues of inbreeding and relatedness. Another important group is show judges. In addition to being able to select the most attractive dog, they should also be aware of which individuals exhibit exaggerated characteristics. These dogs should never be rewarded in the ring. Judges in the Netherlands should therefore be well trained but should also receive ongoing education to ensure they are aware of the most recent developments.

Join in before it’s too late The Netherlands’ Fair-breed (Fairfok) project plan shows that cooperation can get you a very long way. Focusing on a common goal helps minimize any differences which may be present in other areas. So animal protectionists, scientists, breeders and dog fanciers all achieve something special. Our dream is to do the same at an international level: to share the same passion but also to share responsibility for healthy and sociable dogs. National kennel clubs all over the world possess so much knowledge, strength and conviction. We should pool our energy because it is high time to take fundamental steps. Join in before it’s too late.

Owners should raise and train their dogs well and for this purpose many different courses are available. Course instructors, too, should be well trained as they constitute an important factor in sound raising of dogs thus maximising the enjoyment of owning a dog.

amazing Dutch dog Breeds Saarlooswolfdog The Saarlooswolfdog was created in the 1930s by Leendert Saarloos who aimed to improve the qualities of his beloved breed the German Shepherd Dog. He started by introducing wolf blood and then focussed on behavioural characteristics. Exterior was not important to him. At the time the breed won the Raad van Beheer recognition (six years after Saarloos’ death in 1969), fate had it that the wolf like exterior of the Saarlooswolfdog formed an important part of the breed’s profile, together with a rather reserved, highly reliable, sociable and independent temperament, which is also reminiscent to the wolf in his early ancestry. Height at the withers 60-75 centimetres. Nederlandse Schapendoes / Dutch Schapendoes The Dutch Schapendoes has the same native breed origin as the Dutch Shepherd dog, being the smaller variety, whose task was to herd the flock when moving. The breed club, founded in 1947, successfully reconstructed the breed, which was virtually extinct at that time. The Dutch Schapendoes is very much a working breed, agile and active, in no way nervous. It is light in bone, and has a thick, slightly wavy medium long coat, protecting the dog against bad weather conditions. All colours are permitted, but greyish to black is preferred. Height at the withers 40-50 centimetres. Breed clubs: The Schapendoes Club www.schapendoesclub.nl The Dutch Schapendoes Association (Vereniging “De Nederlandse Schapendoes”) www.schapendoes.nl

Hollandse Smoushond / Dutch Smoushond The Dutch Smoushond, a breed of the Pinscher and Schnauzer type, was well known especially in Amsterdam in the middle of the nineteenth century. A companion dog, at home also in stables with the horses; cities had many stables at that time. Initiatives to establish the breed in the first half of the twentieth century did not succeed and the breed became extinct. In 1973 a breeding programme was started aiming to reconstruct the Smoushond. Physical and mental health always had priority in this programme, as well as creating a wide gene pool. The reconstructed Dutch Smoushond is, like his predecessor, an active companion with a rough coat in a straw colour. Height at the withers 35-42 centimetres. Drentsche Patrijshond / Drentsche Partridge Dog The Drentsche Partridge Dog from the Drenthe province in the north-east of the Netherlands is a pointing and retrieving dog that works at a relatively low speed in close proximity to its owner. It has a natural working ability in combination with a friendly disposition, and needs a gentle hand in training. Only since 1943 has this breed been recognised by the Raad van Beheer, due to a growing awareness regarding the value of national heritage during World War II. Breeding for hunting ability remained important, even nowadays when the majority of Drentsche Partridge Dogs live as companion dogs. The coat is white with brown marks. Height at the withers 55-63 centimetres. Breed clubs: The Netherlands Drentsche Patridge Dog Club (Drentsche Patrijshonden Club Nederland) www.dphcn.nl Association for the Drentse Patridge Dog (Vereniging “De Drentsche Patrijshond”) www.drentschepatrijshond.org

Hollandse Herdershond / Dutch Shepherd Dog The Dutch Shepherd Dog was highly valued as an independently working herd. He kept the large flocks of sheep, which up to the end of the nineteenth century roamed in rural Netherlands, on their place of grazing. The breed club, the next to the oldest in the Netherlands, was founded in 1898 by citizens aiming to preserve this breed as a part of the national cultural heritage. The standard limited the coat varieties to short, long and rough, and the coat colour to gold or silver brindle (also blue-grey and pepper and salt in the rough). Its ability to work nowadays shows mainly in dog sports, but a few still assist a shepherd. Height at the withers 55-62 centimetres. Breed clubs: Dutch Shepherd Dog Club (Nederlandse Herdershonden Club) www.hollandseherder.nl Association for the Dutch Shepherd Dog (Vereniging voor de Hollandse Herder) www.vereniginghollandseherder.nl

Nederlandse Kooikerhondje The Nederlandse Kooikerhondje is an old breed, as is to be seen on several paintings of Dutch masters of the seventeenth century, where it is portrayed as the companion dog of a family. It was a temperamental working breed as well, used in the decoy. By waving his tail with the white point the dog arouses the curiosity of the ducks and herds the ducks to the end of the wickerwork tunnel, where they can be caught. Formerly this type of hunting was done on a large scale for the duck’s meat. In present time decoys are mainly used to ring ducks. The majority of Kooikerhondjes nowadays are companion dogs, who need to live an active life. The coat colour is orange red plates on a white fond. Height at the withers 35-40 centimetres.

Stabijhoun The Stabijhoun is a general utility hunting dog, with excellent skills to catch moles. Its origins are in the province of Friesland, where for centuries it was popular among farmers and working people alike. In the first half of the twentieth century the Stabijhoun was often crossed with the Wetterhoun, to improve the qualities for hunting polecats. This crossbreeding endangered the existence of dogs with the traits of the original types. To preserve them, in the thirties initiatives were taken to breed the two separately. In 1942 the breeds were recognised by the Raad van Beheer. The Stabijhoun is black, or brown, with white. The ideal height at the withers is 53 centimetres for dogs, 49 for bitches. Breed clubs: The Dutch Association for the Stabijhoun and the Frisian Water Dog (Nederlandse Vereniging voor Stabij-& Wetterhounen) www.nvsw.nl Our Stabyhoun (Vereniging Onze Stabyhoun) www.onzestabyhoun.nl

Wetterhoun / Frisian Water Dog The Frisian Water Dog has its roots in the northern province of Friesland, a region famous for its many lakes. The breed was specialised for hunting otters, for which task it needed a certain courage and toughness. The thick and water resistant curly coat is an excellent equipment for long days at the rough and cold water side. As the Frisian Pointing Dog, the Wetterhoun was also used for hunting moles and polecats. His temperament is rather aloof, which made him a good guard dog on the farm. The modern Wetterhoun is mainly a companion and when trained as a working gundog, he is used as a retriever. Height at the withers for dogs 59 centimetres, for bitches 55 centimetres. Breed clubs: The Netherlands Frisian Water Dog Association (De Wetterhoun Vereniging Nederland) www.dwvn.nl Dutch Association for the Stabijhoun and the Frisian Water Dog (Nederlandse Vereniging voor Stabij-& Wetterhounen) www.nvsw.nl

Markiesje The Markiesje, Dutch companion dog for ladies of noble birth in the eighteenth century, was forgotten by official cynology. When it was realised that the Markiesje type dogs could be lost through inactivity, a breed club was founded in 1979 to aim for restoration. In the reconstruction phase the breed club screens the whole population. After twenty years the results of the breeding program warranted the recognition by the Raad van Beheer of the Markiesje as Dutch breed number nine, in the companion dog group, and the approval of a standard. The Markiesje is elegant and small but in no way a toy. The colour is black, small white markings are accepted. Height at the withers about 35 centimetres. The breed is not recognised by the FCI. UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY: MARIJKE GUNNEWEG SELLS ORIGINAL OIL PAINTINGS

Logo Gunneweg: self-explanatory

In de corridor between hall 7 and hall 8 For many years her work could be admired at dog shows in the Netherlands and abroad. Artist Marijke Gunneweg (1945) did not start painting until later in life and specialised in dogs as her subject. For health reasons she no longer paints. At the World Dog Show 2018 Marijke is selling her entire collection of original oil paintings.

‘Painting dogs began as a hobby’, explains Marijke ‘but it soon became my profession. It was something close to my heart.’ Marijke became well known in the dog world and everyone was familiar with her work. The time has come to say goodbye. ‘With many thanks to the organisation of the World Dog Show 2018 who are giving me this opportunity to present for the last time all my original paintings of all breeds of dogs.’

Marijke Gunneweg during a painting demonstration

‘This was my life’s work which I have presented at many dog shows in places such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Dortmund, Barcelona, Brussels, Vienna, Portugal and Berlin.’ The original price of a painting measuring 50 x 60 cm in a gold-finish Nielsen frame was € 1.500,-. To mark her last public presentation Marijke is selling the paintings far below the original price. “I’ve decided to sell all these paintings for the special price of 250 euros each. This is for the last time because unfortunately I can no longer paint.”

Here is a unique opportunity to purchase an exclusive painting of your favourite breed. The paintings are on display in the corridor between Hall 7 and Hall 8. “I shall of course be there to welcome you and tell you all about the paintings. There is a special story to tell about each one.”

Exhibition during the centenary of the German VDH at the Westfalenhallen in Dortmund (2006)

For the specialist collector Marijke is also selling her private collection of dog postage stamps, dog cigar bands and First Day Covers. “These are sorted by breed and very interesting to the collector. So if you have time between shows, come by to browse and enjoy. See you at the World Dog Show!”

Artist Monique van Wijk celebrates her 25th anniversary Monique van Wijk at the Winner Show 2016

Monique van Wijk is celebrating her 25th anniversary as a professional painter of dog portraits. She is exhibiting her work at a stand near the main ring in hall 2 where you can also put your name down for her book marking 25 years of dog portraits. When you visit her stand you can also win a free pencil drawing of your dog. ‘It’s fun that my anniversary year coincides with the World Dog Show. All the more to celebrate!’ Monique made her acquaintance with the dog world 25 years ago when a couple commissioned a painting of t hemselves. ‘They had a young Sharpei who I happened to draw for the fun of it. They liked the drawing so much and suggested I exhibit my work at a dog show. I took their advice and discovered straight away that this was what I wanted!’ Bull Terrier Monique consulted the Dutch Kennel Club ‘Raad van Beheer’ who was more than happy to help: ‘They provided lots of information, let me use the library and put me in touch with breeders; that’s how I got to know the dog world. And then when a lovely Bull Terrier crossed my path I was completely won over.’ She hired a trade stand at the Winner Show and since then has been a valuable addition to large dog shows. ‘It’s a wonderful opportunity to get to know so many dog fanciers.’

Raffle winners will win a pencil drawing in this style

Each a work of art Monique’s work can now be found in numerous European countries: ‘Work has been commissioned in Germany, Scandinavia too, France and so on.’ In each portrait she endeavours to create more than just a good resemblance. ‘Each portrait must be personal as well as evocative – it has to be unique. The owner must obviously recognise his own dog but the painting also needs be special to the objective beholder.’ Best in Show It has become a tradition that the organisation of the Winner show commissions Monique to paint a portrait of the Best in Show which is subsequently presented to the winner. ‘We’re now doing the same at the World Dog Show. I’m also working on a pencil drawn collage of the nine Dutch breeds of dogs which on behalf of the World Dog Show Foundation 2018 will be presented to the Dutch Kennel Club ‘Raad van Beheer’ during the event. Quite an honour!’ Raffle Each day Monique is organising a raffle: ‘People can leave behind their email address and have the chance each day of winning a free pencil drawing of their dog. I’ll arrange the necessary details with the winner each day.’ All in all, every reason to visit Monique van Wijk at the World Dog Show!

WDPA PHOTO COMPETITION DOG PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR A team of WDPA at Crufts, Great Britain

The World Dog Press Association (WDPA) is happy to announce their first professional dog photo competition organized in cooperation with the World Dog Show 2018 and generously sponsored by Horizon Pet Food and Birdbrook Rosettes.

WDPA member Yossi Guy caught in action

We have four categories – shows, portraits, movement and open (any photo of a dog) – and there will be three winners in each category.

Dog Photographer of the Year is a new initiative by the WDPA to promote its members and expose the public to their top quality work. WDPA plans to continue the contest on an annual basis and hopes to see as many participants as possible.

Announcement of the winners The winners will be announced at the main ring on Saturday, the 11th of August. All the winners will receive prizes from our sponsors, Horizon dog food and Birdbrook Rosettes.

60 entries The competition was open only to active members of the WDPA, who are true members of the press and their work is published in large magazines and websites. We have received almost 60 entries from 15 members. The photos are sent to the panel of judges who will score them. The judges are Mr. Gerard Jipping who represents the Raad van Beheer, Mrs. Paula Heikonen Lehkonen, a well-known judge and photographer from Finland and Mrs. Anat Segev, an art curator who lives in Prague.

About the WDPA The WDPA is a non-profit organization which counts around 450 registered photographers, reporters and editors all over the world. They were presented for the first time during the World Dog Show 2002 in Amsterdam and recognized (among others) by the FCI. The main goal of the WDPA is getting the best working conditions for their members in order to make their reports for the press. Members use a WDPA press card to distinguish themselves as professionals working for dog magazines. The WDPA has a code of ethics that must give their members respect and profile them towards committees and Kennel Clubs as trustworthy and reliable. Members are required to behave in a way that does not interfere with the running of the show and respect the organizers, judges and exhibitors.

Top 40 We have enlarged and printed out the top 40 photos to be exhibited at the gallery in the RAI during the WDS. The gallery can be found nearby the Main Ring in Hall 2. The judges’ scores will be added to determine the winners.

The establishment of the WDPA took place during the World Dog Show 2002 in Amsterdam, this picture shows all members present at that time
