FROM THE PUBLISHER
Why I Run During the fall months, our editorial staff mulls over topics for the year ahead and lays the groundwork for what we hope will be inspiring content to share with you. One topic that bubbled to the surface during those conversations — “why I run” — is a somewhat introspective and reflective question that you may have found yourself asking from time to time. For me, it’s a question that has a very different answer today than it did a decade ago. I didn’t always run, but when I started, I

feel better about myself, and break through my own personal barriers of what I thought was possible. After several years of running my com-
petitive drive kicked in, which led to participating in 5Ks, 15Ks and eventually, marathons. A life as eating and sleeping. Along the way, I had children. My family and career took precedence over “logging the miles” and quite frankly, life got busy. In recent years, running has become my reset button. When I feel lost, buried, confused or overwhelmed, I know exactly what my mind and body need. Someone once said, “The hardest part of running is putting on your shoes.” I’ve had many of those days over the years, but lacing up my kicks and heading out the door has been so life-giving and for that, I am truly grateful. My twin girls, now 12 years old, have begun logging miles with me and we’ve started our own “run club.” The word ‘club’ is probably stretching it a bit since it’s just the three of us. We don’t have a regular schedule, and our

meet-ups don’t always happen without a little prodding to get the three of us out the door together. But when we do make it out, it yields the experience I have come to crave. Is it a runner’s high? I’m sure it is in a way, but just a little different than the one I felt over 20 years ago when I laced up my shoes and headed out for my first run. I started running because I needed to, and quickly got hooked. Somewhere along the way, my desire morphed into necessity (training). Today if you asked me why I run, I guess I’d say, “Because I can,” and I’ll keep doing so as long as my body will let me. I hope you make the best of the year ahead, and enjoy the content and inspiration we strive to provide here at RaceCenter. See you at the races! Warm Regards, Brook Gardner, Publisher brook@racecenter.com

TRAIL MATTERS
Deciding which road to take comes easy while running in the mountains. PHOTO: Paul Lieto
Why I Run PAUL LIETO
At one time or another, most running publications address the question, “why we run.” In 2017, it will be RaceCenter’s inquiry. In this first issue of the year, I share my personal reasons for running. In future issues, I hope to explore the many reasons why those of us who live in the Pacific Northwest also run. So, we begin today with what moves me. Why do I run? Beginning this exercise of reflection, I find myself in high school having just been cut from the freshman football team. Wait, did I say cut? I meant my mother was taken aside after the first week of practice, and it was kindly suggested I take up another sport. I hadn’t quite hit five feet in height, nor 100 pounds upon entering high school. I choose to believe, therefore, that the coaches were concerned for my safety. Rather than pursuing my dreams of becoming the next Walter Payton, I went out for cross country. We were a misfit crowd - none of us were popular, all of us were fairly skinny, and we were required to wear the far-too-short dolphin shorts. Freshman and JV squads ran 2 miles, while varsity runners ran a distance of 3 miles. In my four years on the team, I

never ran the 3-mile course. I’m not sure I’m going to discover the answer to “why I run” in these high school memories, so let’s go back further. My next running memory is jogging around a track in middle school trying to achieve a decent mile time for the Presidential Physical Fitness Awards. Wait, did I say track? More accurately, they were laps around the school parking lot that had been measured, perhaps accurately, but definitely not the USATF-certified 400-meters. It was miserable. I recall my friends, Dan and Sean, were quick around those laps giving one another the motivation to keep up a “high standards”
pace. I didn’t run fast but rather drudged around the lopsided make-shift track which had a slight uphill start and finish. I also recall the pre-teen years in which I ran around the neighborhood playing cowboys and Indians with my friends, and occasionally my brother, Chris, when we weren’t fighting. I was always a cowboy, with the horse on a stick, blue chaps and six-shooter cap gun pinned to my side. Chris was the Indian, who would have happily scalped me if given the chance. These are my fond memories of play, which hold weight in answering the question of, “Why?” It seems my memories from the teenage years reveal I actually disliked running. Pre-teen was all play, but no formalized habit of running. If the reason I run cannot be found in my past, perhaps it lies in the present. Below I explore through a fragmented free-thought process, of why I run — today. I like the woods, so I only run on trails. I like the feeling of swerving between trees and flowing downhill over the rocks and roots on the path before me. I enjoy exploring new places, and am grateful my legs can take me there. I run to
escape an extroverted world. I like the quiet. I am an introvert. I need seclusion and solitude to reset. Admittedly, I may get a bit too much solitude, but running in the woods on my own never seems
the wild grounds me. It nourishes my soul. I run to let go and make room for new things. I run to clear my mind. I run to remember why I’m here and what I’m capable of. I run to be

lonely. I experience a deep connection with nature when on the trails. I run solitarily through the woods to know I am not alone. When I am stagnant I am slowly dying, when I am moving I am most alive. Running in open spaces allows me to explore within myself. I gain clarity within these spaces. I do much of my productive thinking on long trail runs. I solve problems and am always the optimist. My thoughts trend upward during my runs in the mountains, and they trend downward if I sit stagnant for too long ruminating on things. The woods, nature, is the real world for me. While I’m not a hunter, nor could I live in the forest for days on end, being in
contemplative. It is my meditation. I like the sense of accomplishment after a run. I like pushing my physical limits. I like suffering. I run to feel emotions. I run to discover who I am. I run to remember who I am. The thoughts that do escape while running have a better perspective on things. Perhaps they are influenced by the endorphins that move through me. Perhaps my mind knows the trees and mountains hold no judgement. Perhaps my spirit running free impacts the direction of my mental pathway. The science, or spirituality of the why doesn’t matter. What matters is recognizing I can influence my thoughts, control the direction my day takes, and
pursue productive creativity through a physical and active connection with nature. I run to experience solitude, which leads to connection with nature and self, and ultimately brings a clarity to my existence. Solitude, clarity, and connection are the building blocks of my mental wellness, and the answer to the why I run. Why do you run? Have your reasons changed as your running progresses, and new goals and milestones beckon? Perhaps you’ve lost sight of your “why” in our distraction-filled world? Whether you’ve already pondered this question and have concrete reasons for putting in the miles, or you seek a “why” in order to begin (or begin again) running, I want to hear your answers. Reach out via email or social media (tag your Instagram photos #whyirunpnw) and tell me why you run. Your reasons will be inspiration for future columns. •

Head North for Bacon and Snow Yep. This one involves bacon. In Canada. On March 11, Golden, BC, plays host to the BaconBeiner, a cross country skiing event that has skiers downing bacon after each lap. They do claim to provide high-calorie vegetarian options for those who don’t partake in the bacon. For 2017, they are no longer requiring the bacon eating on each lap, although there’s no “Porcine Wonder” prize consideration unless you embrace the pork. Skiers will have 2, 4, or 6 hours to complete as many laps as possible of a 5K course. Laps will be registered by passing the start/finish line, and a skier’s last lap must be completed before the final hour mark of their chosen category. Laps are counted after the participant consumes a predetermined portion of bacon (or bacon substitute). Again, participants wanting consideration for a “Porcine Wonder” prize must consume at least one slice of bacon per lap. A piglets option kids race is also on the schedule with 30 minutes to do laps on a 500-meter loop. Below are all race options:
Couve Clover Run Goes Green Why Racing Events has designed 3-mile, 7-mile, and 10-mile courses for the festive Couve Clover Run that take runners through some of the most scenic areas of Vancouver, WA. Participants will run through the historic Officer’s Row, Fort Vancouver, the Columbian Riverfront, Ester Short Park, the Farmers Market and more. The course is relatively flat with a couple short hills. Soup and green beer will be provided courtesy of Deschutes Brewery, as well as pastries from Franz Bakery and coffee and hot chocolate at the Boomerang Coffee Shop. Prizes will be awarded for the most festive costume, so think green.

Birch Bay Road Race
The Brews Are Blooming
Can’t make the Birch Bay International Marathon in February? Here’s another promising event in the seaside village near the Canadian border. Head north April 1 for the scenic Birch Bay Road Race. The road race offers three distances for participants: 30K, 15K, and 5K. Birch Bay sits just two hours from Seattle and an hour and a half from Vancouver, BC. The course is a beautiful run along the shores of Birch Bay where views abound, and the crisp sea air fills your lungs. The beautiful shores of Birch Bay are home to eagles and herons so keep your eyes peeled as you run along the USATF-certified courses. Walkers are welcome, and running groups and teams are invited to sign up for the Club Challenge. A portion of every entry fee from the Birch Bay Road Race supports Girls on the Run of Whatcom County. Consider the beautiful Semiahmoo Resort just 10 minutes from the start line if you wish to make a weekend of it.
The Blooms to Brews Marathon, Marathon Relay, Half Marathon, and 10K Run/Walk takes place April 9 in Woodland, WA, one of the most historic communities in Washington state. Experience the flat course through the Woodland Bottoms just when the tulips and lilacs are in full bloom. The marathon is USATF-certified, and a Boston qualifier. Enjoy breathtaking views of the Columbia and Lewis Rivers, then relax at the post party at Horseshoe Lake with a cold microbrew or root beer. There is also a 1-mile Kids Bloomathon course for the little ones held on Saturday. The event benefits the Scott Hill Park and Sports Complex, and coincides with the Holland America Flower Gardens’ Woodland Tulip Festival happening on April 7-8.

Lessons From a Year Not Running
Stephanie back in her groove with a win at ElkKings 50K this past Fall. PHOTO: Paul Nelson
Part I. The Physical STEPHANIE M. HOWE, PH.D.
A year is a long time to be separated from something you love. However, time away can offer a perspective that’s not otherwise accessible. Absence really does make the heart grow fonder.
December, 2015 A nagging pain in my left Achilles prompted me to seek out surgery to once and for all rid myself of the pain that had plagued me for over a year. I was so tired of it. Tired of limping everywhere, not being able to run and most of all, tired of hurting all the time. Time off did nothing. With high hopes I tried various conservative treatments, only to have my hopes shattered. It was an emotional rollercoaster of highs and lows. Ironically, the only time I felt some relief was when I was running. After a year of trying to bargain with my body, I made the decision to start healing. Meaning, getting to the root of the problem and undergoing surgery. It was one of the most freeing decisions I’ve ever made, followed by one of the most frustrating, emotional, and challenging years of my life.
universe has a different plan, and despite our greatest intentions, healing takes time. And patience. And resilience. The first lesson I learned is that healing happens on its own time. Independent of any dates, events, or goals you have planned. My foot really didn’t care that I had a big race planned for June. And no matter how much I tried to keep “mind-overmatter” during the healing process, it just didn’t work. Every sense in my body wanted to race. I could literally see it, feel it and taste it. I willed
Learning the Hard Way I had goals for 2016. I was not going to let this little hiccup impact my entire year. Nope, I was going to stay focused and work hard so I could hit the ground running once my foot healed. Literally. But sometimes even the best laid plans don’t translate into application. Sometimes the

my foot to heal in time, but the tighter my grip, the further it slipped away from me. It culminated in an emotional and teary pandemonium, as realization set in and my racing goals came crashing down. It was in the aftermath when I picked myself up from rock bottom, that I realized how trivial it had been to pigeon hole myself into such a narrow goal. Why had I been so dead set on a timeframe for healing, and over-confidently committed to a race? Looking back, it seemed like such a juvenile thing to do. I had expected my body to follow a very scientific way of healing that would allow me to be healed by a certain time. Our bodies, although very scientific, are also an art. They do not work like a mathematical equation, and are more like a symphony where many instruments are involved to make a beautiful piece of music flow together. Healing is individual, and expectations should not be set in stone. As with art, the image starts to reveal itself as the artist works. Sometimes it follows the original plan, and other times it becomes something totally different. The second lesson that I learned is the importance of rest. The first thing most athletes seek out is how to stay fit while injured. Instead of embracing some down time, we often try to maintain our current fitness by shifting to a different mode. Although cross training is better than training through an injury, rest is even better. During the first part of my recovery I was determined to stay in shape. I spent countless hours going through
Letting Go

the motions of mindless cross training in the gym. I literally burned myself out mentally. And you know what the worst part was? It set me back. Yes, I maintained my fitness but when I was able to try running, I was too fit for my own good. Instead of slowly building up, I was able to run faster and farther than my body was ready for. And as a result, I injured myself. Again. It was like running into a brick wall. And once again, it crushed me. I had to pick myself up from rock bottom and re-examine
I believe the two biggest problems were, 1) my expectation of how and when my body should heal, and 2) cross training to stay in shape rather than focus on recovery. So, I let go. I actually relaxed and allowed my body and mind to have a break. The first week or so was tough. I was restless, irritable and cranky. But it got better. Each day was better than the last, and none were worse. In fact, after a week I was starting to feel happier than I’d felt in months. I wasn’t forcing myself to swim laps or complete mind numbing workouts in the gym. I started to actually enjoy a slower pace of life. I traveled to Colorado to spend time with my best friend from high school, spent a week in northern Minnesota canoeing with my parents, completed art projects, watched the entire series of Gilmore Girls, enjoyed sitting outside on warm summer evenings and read books. If you know me, this is not normal. Pushing my limits, in all areas of my life drives me to be my best. But now I was taking time to stop and smell the flowers — to gaze at them and appreciate the beauty. And I found that this slower pace of life really suited me. It felt good. For once my focus was not on pushing my limits,
but appreciating what each day had to offer. I didn’t totally cut activity out of my life, I just kept a better balance. I only swam when I felt like it, and I stopped when I got tired. I allowed myself to really approach activity intuitively, and it felt really good. Miraculously, my body started to heal. And once I was fully healed I didn’t revert back to my old ways. I continued to take an intuitive approach to training. I’ve been kind to my body and in return, it’s been kind to me. No one wishes for an injury, but I can honestly say that I am grateful for the experience. There are so many things I learned from a year off of running that I never would have otherwise experienced. There is always a silver lining. • Glenn Tachiyama Photography
what went wrong. I was not going to get stuck in this cycle. Change was imminent.

MAXIMUS
Your 6 Month Marathon Plan
Part 1: The First 3 Months MAX KING
Training for, and running a marathon is more complex than runners give it credit for. You’ll hear professional runners often say, “You have to respect the marathon.” No one ever says that about the 10K. I suppose that’s why the marathon is a pinnacle achievement, something that many people do once, feel a huge sense of accomplishment (because it is), and never do it again. However, if you want to revisit the marathon, it’s helpful to find a good training plan that works for you and use it during your next training cycle. Following a good plan can make training more enjoyable, help you improve your marathon time, and allow you to enjoy your marathon experience through proper nutrition, pacing and fitness. Training for a marathon is not easy. The miles alone are tough to fit into an already busy schedule.
26
Event Guide 2017 racecenter.com
Throw in the physiological complexities of needing the right nutrition, hydration and pacing work, and it’s enough to make anyone (even the pros) run and hide. This year, because you’re reading this article, you’ll be better prepared. However, it won’t be complicated or messy. We’re going to give you a simple six-month plan to follow so that you’re ready for a marathon. The plan will give you a distance to run each week, broken down into individual workouts. Along with it are recommendations on how to find the correct pace for a given workout, race day nutrition, and staying healthy throughout the process. This first three months will be focused on gaining strength and endurance, developing an

aerobic base, and finishing it off with a half marathon trial run. The second part in April will tell you how to gain more higher-end fitness, taper for the marathon, and work out those last minute details. Training should be simple. Don’t get bogged down in the minutiae of why, let a coach do that. For you, the most important thing is to believe in what you’re doing and have faith that it will get you to your goal. My plans are based on a four-week training block, three weeks of increasing mileage with one week of rest, or lower mileage. This is a good schedule that will stress the body, and allow it to recover enough to get the most out of your training. Weeks are roughly scheduled so that you have rest days between hard days, and days off are CONTINUED ON PAGE 28 »

NOTES * WU/CD. Warm up and cool down. 10-15min easy pace running followed by dynamic stretching, usually 15-25min total. I highly recommend doing at least the 10-15min easy running if you’re short on time. This is meant to get you ready for a run at faster than your easy pace. It increases blood flow to muscles and as I like to say “primes the system for hard work.“ * Tempo run guidelines: A tempo run is meant to get you close to your lactate threshold but not go over. It should be a comfortably hard effort that you could maintain for 10-20min past the end of the run. You should not be straining to achieve the desired effort. This run is best done by monitoring your heart rate to 87-92% of your maximum heart rate. These should be done on a flat course. * Easy hilly run. I’m a huge proponent of adding a lot of hill running into a marathon program. It helps give you the strength you need to finish out a successful marathon. Easy means easy. Keeping your heart rate or effort in the easy range while running significant elevation gain. You may have to re-calibrate what you think is a hill. If possible, you would achieve 1,000-1,500ft of elevation gain with an 8-10 mile run.
* Progression Runs. A progression run starts out easy and progressively gets faster until you finish the last few miles at about tempo effort. Usually broken down to 1/3 easy pace, 1/3 progression dropping about 10-15sec/mi, 1/3 at tempo effort. These can be done on flat to rolling courses. * Easy Runs. Easy runs are meant to be EASY. Yes, they feel slow. Yes, I know you can go faster. That’s not the point. Take your time. Run for time if that helps you slow down. Keep these to 65-75% of your maximum heart rate and very conversational. Most in this chart do not have mileage because you’ll fill in your weekly mileage using easy runs of varying distance based on how much your target weekly mileage is. * 1st Target Race: Half Marathon. As we progress through the 6 month plan it is often a good idea to test your fitness using a race. The half marathon at the 12 week point is meant to help you stay motivated and on target with your training. It can also help you to figure out your current training paces as it gives you a training marker to start from. * MP (Marathon Pace) Workout. This workout is to get you familiar with your marathon pace. It will be similar to your tempo effort +5-10sec. You should feel pretty comfortable for the full 2 miles but it will start to get tough on the last interval. Keep an even pace and do this on a course similar in profile to your target marathon. MAXIMUS evenly spaced throughout the week. I believe that the more consistent you can be by spreading out the mileage over the course of the week, the better your fitness and running will become. That’s why you’ll see 4-5 days of running each week. This plan is based on the assumption that you’re at a point where running 5-6 miles at a sustained pace is relatively comfortable. I’ve tried to increase mileage responsibly. However, if it becomes too much then feel free to back off, move days around and be flexible with the plan. Take one week at a time. It will look intimidating if you jump to the last couple of big weeks before the marathon but as you gain fitness, those long runs and workouts will become easier. The last thing I want is for you to end up injured and unmotivated, so use it how you see fit and most of all, stay healthy.
Tips
Dress in layers when training outdoors and consider a heart rate monitor to make certain your easy runs are easy and your hard ones are hard. PHOTO: Bigstock.com
miles. So wear your shirt, shorts, hydration gear, shoes and socks on training runs to make sure you know what works. Shoes are obviously an important part of your gear, so finding the right pair is crucial. The best way to do that is not to take a recommendation, but to go to a running store and get fit by a professional. There are shoes out there that worked well for your best friend but would be the worst ones
you could get for yourself. Everyone is different. Make sure your easy runs are easy, and the hard ones are hard. The biggest mistake people make when they’re starting out is running their easy days too hard. You’ll benefit aerobically by going a little slower on your easy days than going too fast. I’ve put some intervals and tempo pace workouts into the plan not because you need them to get through the marathon, but because they’ll help you enjoy the experience more. Changing your pace breaks the monotony of easy runs, gives you better fitness and makes your goal more attainable. I did not put any strength training into the plan, but one of the best ways to stay healthy and injury-free is to add strength training into your routine. By implementing a 30-minute workout 2-3 times a week, you’ll see huge benefits over the long run. This doesn’t have to be done at a gym with weights, either. Body weight, high rep/ low weight core, and leg exercises are ideal. • Kelvin Trautman Photography
Use your long runs to work on your nutrition during the race. Training will never simulate a race, but it’s the best thing you have to figuring out what works ahead of time. You’ll want to shoot for 200-400cal/hr during the marathon and so you’ll need to find a good product (usually gel) that will get you through. Also try to get 300mg of sodium (S-caps, Metasalt, or Roctane electrolytes are good) and 20-24oz of water per hour. Figure out all your race gear in advance, and run with it to make sure it works. The last thing you want is to try out a new pair of shorts and find out that you’re chaffing in them the first three

The Pacific Northwest
Top Notch Trail Races Under 25K JEFF BROWNING
Trail running has many legitimate benefits over running on roads. And although it isn’t always possible to run on dirt, it’s worth staying off busy thoroughfares. A 2004 pollution study conducted by the University of Brisbane, Australia found that during exercise in crowded urban areas, low concentrations of pollutants caused lung damage similar to the high concentrations people experienced when not working out at all. So even if you can’t get to a trailhead, it’s smart to find a local park or routes through quiet neighborhoods. Trail running has also been shown to help with mental health. It relieves stress by allowing us to unplug for a moment — concentrate on the wind in the trees, chirping birds, or deer bounding off into the underbrush. Plus, running on trails helps with balance and core strength. Dirt creates less impact, which translates to a lower risk of injury. So, not only do we avoid breathing vehicle fumes, we also lower the risk of getting tagged by that idiot who’s texting while driving. But my favorite part of running trails is definitely the opportunity to tap into my inner kid. You know, that exhilaration that comes from jumping over

obstacles — logs, roots, rocks — getting dirty and running along babbling brooks. Trail running reminds us to take a deep breath, find peace and reset. So how do you find the incentive to get out in the woods each and every week? Simply sign up for a trail race. The following are some top picks in the Pacific Northwest for your motivation list. Giddyup.
Orcas Island 25K ORCAS ISLAND, WA | 15.5 MILES | JANUARY 2018 rainshadowrunning.com
With old-growth forests, challenging climbs, and raw beauty of the Puget Sound, the Orcas Island 25K is one of Rainshadow Running’s oldest races, and one you don’t want to miss. Experience communal lodging complete with heated bunkhouses (don’t forget your bedding, headlamp and scary stories). There’s also camping in Moran State Park, but it’s first come, first served, so get there early. Be prepared for a winter weekend like no other, and make sure to stick around for an unforgettable after party.

BELLINGHAM, WA | 13.1 MILES | OCTOBER 2017 lakepaddentrailhalf.org
HENRY HAGG LAKE, OR | 15.5 MILES | FEBRUARY 19, 2017 orcc.net
The Pacific Northwest is known for its picturesque forests. And the woods around Lake Padden are no different. Be ready for plenty of rocks and roots, and enough dirt to satisfy even the most serious trail runners. The lakeside post-race party will feature awards, recovery food, drinks and massage therapists. Proceeds benefit Rebound of Whatcom County — a charity dedicated to kids on the fringes of the Whatcom County community.
If you haven’t run this one, it’s high time. One of the Pacific Northwest’s most popular winter ultras, Hagg Lake 25K offers one of the muddiest experiences around. It was featured in Runner’s World Trail Edition as one of Oregon’s top trail races, and you’ll see why. After a 1.5-mile gravel out-and-back featuring the biggest elevation change of the whole race, you’ll run the famously muddy singletrack trail around beautiful Hagg Lake before celebrating with friends and family at the post-race festivities.
TILLAMOOK STATE FOREST, OR | 15.5 MILES | OCTOBER 2017 gobeyondracing.com
Want to climb a mountain? How about two? The Elk-Kings Traverse 25K features a steep and technical course through the Tillamook State Forest. You’ll climb up and down rocky trails with exposure, and it won’t be easy. Summit both Elk Mountain and Kings Mountain, and conquer 5,800 feet of elevation gain (much of it in the first three miles of the race). But the hard work will be worth it. Post-race festivities include pulled pork BBQ or veggie burgers for all runners and volunteers.
High Alpine Half MT. BACHELOR, OR | 13.1 MILES | SEPTEMBER 17, 2017 superfitproductions.com
The High Alpine Half starts and finishes at Mt. Bachelor Resort’s Sunrise Lodge, and features a lollipop loop course with fabulous views of South Sister, Broken Top and the Three Sister’s Wilderness. The predominantly singletrack course will take you through hemlock forests and alpine meadows of the Cascade Mountains. Don’t miss this spectacularly scenic Central Oregon race. •

Grassroots Running RICK ALBRIGHT
In December 2016, Club Northwest (CNW) and RaceCenter entered into a partnership designed to expand the reach of the Club in the region. The goals of both the Club and RaceCenter are very closely aligned, and this partnership will provide valuable support for grassroots running and track and field programs supported by CNW. RaceCenter’s commitment to serving the needs of Club Northwest, and this partnership itself, is a milestone for the magazine which enters its 25th year in print in 2017. Club Northwest is one of the Pacific Northwest’s oldest and largest running and track & field clubs, with over 400 members. Centered mostly in the Seattle/Western Washington area, the club was founded in 1972. Our mission is to promote participation and competition in recreational activities for all ages and ability levels, create awareness and growth of physical fitness, and support local athletes aspiring to compete in regional, national, and international competitions. Over the years, CNW has helped over 20 athletes compete in Olympic finals and world championships. In 2016, nine CNW athletes competed in the Olympic Trials. We have fielded highly competitive men’s and women’s cross country and track & field club teams for decades. Support provided for our athletes includes coaching, medical care, physical therapy, massage therapy, gear, and travel. Additionally, the Club has supported youth athletic programs for over 40 years. Club Northwest supports the larger running and track & field communities by sponsoring high quality events including the following:
Resolution Run on New Year’s Day Firecracker 5000 on July 3rd The All-Comers Series consists of 11-12 weekly track & field meets during the late spring-summer, and attracts competitors of all ages (4-87 years old) and ability levels (from first-timers to Olympic caliber). Partnering with Seattle University and the Pacific Northwest Track & Field Association, they host two popular cross country meets, the Emerald City Open and the PNTF Championships, each fall.

Recharge Sport:
Athletic Recovery and Performance Training for Life AMY CLARK
Walk into Recharge Sport and you’ll probably find owners, Renee and Austin, either chatting with customers or taking care of routine maintenance around the gym. As athletes, Renee and Austin have combined their experience, education and training to build a business model around their vision of an ideal recovery facility in Bend, Oregon. Most runners tend to focus on their training mileage, speed work and long runs. While paying attention to stretching, nutrition and sleep is instrumental in maintaining a healthy platform, they are often a second priority. Often, runners and athletes are left vulnerable to injury due to neglecting their bodies and not dedicating enough time for rest and other recovery techniques. Recharge is hoping to change that. Renee and Austin met while running cross country for the University of Colorado in Boulder. After graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering, Austin decided to pursue massage therapy due to his continued interest in running. With a developing desire to learn how to heal the human body, he enrolled in the Boulder College of Massage Therapy. “I learned more about
36

myself in those years,” Austin said, as he reflected on transitioning his career path from mechanical engineering to a non-desk job which allowed him to learn more about biomechanics and minimizing impact on the body. After completing his massage training, Austin moved to Flagstaff, Arizona where Renee trained as an elite runner at Northern Arizona University’s Center for High Altitude Training. It was here that Austin trained under massage pioneers, Phil and Jim Wharton, and Renee learned about professional training and recovery methods from world class coaches and physicians, including Jack Daniels, Ph.D. She went on to win the 3,000 meters at the USA Indoor Track and Field

Championships, and the couple moved back to Colorado where Renee trained at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. It was here where they discovered the ultimate recovery center. Sidelined with a severe Achilles injury, Renee traveled to Sweden for surgery. While there was a 50/50 chance that she would never run again, the recovery methods she discovered at the Olympic recovery center were priceless. Through physical therapy, she learned to incorporate finding the root of a problem rather than just trying to apply a quick fix. Along with Austin’s education in massage therapy, they both knew they wanted to take what they had learned and provide a similar service. Their business model not only targets athletes, but everyone with a desire to prevent future medical problems by strengthening their health and well-being. When Renee and Austin opened Recharge in 2013, they occupied a small space near the Old Mill District in Bend that was just large enough to fit a few recliners for compression boots, a small weight gym, locker room and loft for Austin’s massage therapy sessions. Fast forward to two years later and just a couple doors down, and Recharge has transformed into a customized space

all their own. Renee and Austin will tell you that the process of constructing their own gym was frustrating and exhilarating all at once. As a brand new business model, everything from permits to insurance was harder to come by. But in January of 2015, they opened the doors to their new, expanded facility. This one-of-a-kind gym features numerous rooms for massage therapy, nutrition analysis, and acupuncture, and a physical therapy studio. The athletic recovery space is an open area with theater lounge seats, free wifi and flat screen TVs mounted to the wall. For those with injuries, or looking to recover from a big race, ice compression or massage boots can help the body by speeding up the healing process. There are also hot and cold tubs, as well as a full-spectrum infrared sauna – all of which are key components in workout recovery and injury prevention. Recharge has additional experts on staff including professional ultrarunner and nutritional coach, Stephanie Howe, Ph.D., along with sports acupuncturists, lifestyle and strength training

coaches, and yoga and conditioning instructors. If there’s a class that’ll benefit your training regimen, you’ll probably find it at Recharge. “We want a place where people can come learn and get inspired,” said Renee. “It allows us to push the idea of preventative maintenance.” From core strength training to recovery yoga, Recharge seems to have filled a niche when it comes to meeting the needs of runners and those looking to improve their health and wellness, not to mention always bringing in new equipment. The ElliptiGO is an elliptical bicycle that’s been designed by runners as an ideal cross training device, and you can find them at Recharge for
demo, rental and personal instruction. While Recharge’s location in Bend has been open since 2013, they have found other people to manage branches in Eugene, Portland, Vancouver, Reno and Seattle (opening soon). Each location is privately owned, but Renee and Austin have made sure to choose like-minded people who are dedicated to sticking with their true vision of marketing towards everyone, not just athletes, and realizing their goal of offering a place that helps people make education-based choices, while reducing the need for medication and increasing opportunities for an active lifestyle. Recharge offers membership punch cards (10 punches for $99), that are good for any one service at a time, or a monthly all-inclusive membership fee of $125. They are always scheduling weekly runs and other group events, which are often free and a great way to meet others. Visit rechargesport.com for more information. •

Weekend Getaway: SHANNAH WERNER
Joseph, Oregon is not exactly an easy destination to get to, but if you are willing to make the effort, the reward is worth it for a weekend of trail running, hiking, biking and river rafting/kayaking adventures during summer months. Get an early start on Friday morning (or if you have flexibility, take off Thursday afternoon) and pack your bike, running shoes or hiking boots, and swim gear. Joseph is located on the Wallowa Lake Highway (Highway 82), about four hours from Boise, and a 5.5-hour drive from Portland. The Wallowa Lake Highway is 70 miles long and dead- ends at Wallowa Lake, just seven miles from Joseph. Once you’ve arrived in Joseph, the outdoor adventures are endless. The Eagle Cap Wilderness is Oregon’s largest at 556 square-miles, and has more than 530 miles of developed trails with access to over 50 lakes. Trail runners and hikers share the wilderness with deer, elk, sheep, beavers, black bears, cougars, foxes and wolves. Sacajawea Peak (9,838 feet), in the Eagle Cap Wilderness, is the sixth tallest peak in Oregon and the highest outside the Cascade Mountain Range. There is a 13.4-mile out-and-back trail offering views of the neighboring Matterhorn (9,826 feet)

and the Wallowa Mountains. Seven miles south of Joseph where Highway 82 ends, the Wallowa Lake Trailhead begins. This is the main trailhead into the Eagle Cap Wilderness. The Chief Joseph Trail, Aneroid Lake (East Fork) Trail and the West Fork Trail, are the main trails into the Wallowa Lake area. Hikers and runners will be treated to breathtaking scenery throughout the Eagle Cap Lakes Basin, the most popular area in the Wilderness. Start a little higher up in the wilderness by taking the Wallowa Lake Tramway up to Mount Howard (3,700-foot vertical ascent). Explore the area at the top with a bike or hike, and enjoy a meal at the Summit Grill. The beauty in the northeast corner of the state is also why Cycle Oregon has repeatedly included Joseph and the surrounding area on its annual week-long ride. “We have chosen Joseph as a destination for a couple reasons,” said Chris of Rider Services with Cycle Oregon. “One, there is world class cycling in the area. Forest Road 39 from Hells Canyon to Joseph is one of the highest rated routes we’ve ever done. It feels like you’ve been transported from eastern Oregon to Switzerland. Two, you can’t beat the campsites around Wallowa Lake.”
The Wallowa Mountain Loop Classic is a multiday ride through and around the Wallowas. For a short but intense climb, the Salt Creek Summit ride has an elevation gain of 2,000 feet on winding mountain roads that have light to moderate traffic. Off-road bikers can explore the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. The Redmont Trail Network has loops of 7-20 miles for riders to explore. To cool off from a run, hike or bike ride in the mountains, take a dip in Wallowa Lake or the Upper Imnaha River in Hells Canyon, the deepest river canyon in the country. Winding Waters River Expeditions in Joseph leads river rafting trips in the summer on the Snake River through Hells Canyon. Even in the winter, Joseph and the Wallowa Mountains appeal to the adventurer. The town of Joseph sees an average of 48 inches of snowfall, but the mountains can get up to 400 inches in the winter. Mountain biking trails become Nordic skiing and snowshoeing trails, and the snow-capped peaks are breathtaking. Because of the snowfall and terrain, the Eagle Cap Wilderness hosts the Eagle Cap Extreme, a world-class mushing race which is a qualifier for the Iditarod and Yukon Quest. “The ECX 200-mile course features some of Northeast Oregon’s most spectacular landscapes,” said Troy Nave, Public Relations Director
TOP: Hit the open trails for epic running and scenic hikes. The Catsback area is worth checking out because of its vast, big sky open area with very little traffic. for the race. “It traverses the Wallowa Mountains, skirting the Eagle Cap Wilderness — Oregon’s largest — through much of the course. Mushers can peer into Hells Canyon on the Snake River, the deepest river-cut gorge on the continent. The steep terrain and breathtaking views make this one of the most difficult and scenic courses in the sport. In all, mushers will climb and descend over 26,000 feet in the 200-mile race.” After a full day of playing outdoors, nothing tastes better than a good meal and cold beverage — Joseph offers both. Despite being a small town, Joseph’s main street (literally, Main St. North and South) is dotted with local bakeries, cafés, a
chocolate shop, breweries and a traditional soda shop. Terminal Gravity Brewing is a short drive north in Enterprise. Visiting Joseph is not just about running, hiking, biking and playing hard. The history of the area makes it a cultural and historical destination as well. Joseph was named for Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce Indians who were forced out of the Wallowas and had to relocate in Idaho. Visitors to Joseph can see Chief Joseph’s gravesite at the Nez Perce National Historical Park. Great natural beauty often inspires beautiful artwork, and the art scene in Joseph exemplifies that. There are numerous art galleries to stroll through, and the use of bronze as a medium has put Joseph on the map as a mecca for artists specializing in bronze sculptures. A day of play, culture, good food and drink calls for a comfortable bed in order to repeat the fun and adventure the next day. Camping in and around Joseph is definitely an option, as well as
crashing at one of the local bed and breakfasts in downtown or along the Wallowa Lake Highway. The closest accommodation to the Eagle Cap Wilderness is the Wallowa Lake Lodge at the south end of the lake. It offers cabins and lodge rooms for accommodations, and rents out kayaks, paddleboards, motorboats and more to guests. The Wallowa Lake Tramway is a short walk from the Lodge, as well. The Camas Dining Room at the Lodge is open daily, May through October, for breakfast and dinner. •

Running Terminology Base: This refers to how many miles you are running. If you are running 30 miles a week, you have a 30-mile base. For beginning runners, it is extremely important to build a base before doing speed workouts.
5/20
Fartlek: The original meaning comes from the Swedish word for "speed play." This term is typically used to describe timed workouts, where you might do repeats of two minutes of hard running followed by a one-minute recovery pace, as well as other variations of workouts.
5/20
Interval: Often used to describe a speed workout, this term actually signifies the recovery period during that specific workout session. As an example, one might say they are doing 800-meter intervals with 3:00 recovery. Long Run: This is used to signify a run, usually done on the weekend, which is the longest of the week. In many cases, it is significantly longer than the typical run, often adding up to 20-25% of the runner's weekly miles. VO2 Max: The maximum volume of oxygen a person can consume during exercise, which is often used as an indicator of an athlete’s potential in endurance sports. A VO2 Max test is typically conducted on a bicycle ergometer or treadmill and is measured in milliliters of oxygen per kilogram of body mass per minute. Aerobic Threshold: The point at which anaerobic energy pathways start to operate, is considered to be around 75% of maximum heart rate. To calculate your maximum heart rate (MHR), simply subtract your age from 220.
