One recurring theme in our conversations relates to how big the running and endurance sports world has become. New shoe styles, wearable tech, social and digital media continue to appealing, but more accessible to the masses. am very excited, and honored, to continue to have a wealth of writing (and athletic) talent contributing to the magazine again this year including Max King, Stephanie Howe and Jeff Browning — all iconic figures in the running world. Our most tenured writers, Scott Lommers and Shannah Werner, have some great pieces on deck that they will be sharing with you in the issues ahead. Here are a few other takeaways from my recent conversations that I thought I’d share with you. 4 If you have a local running specialty, triathlon or bike shop in your community — support them. 4 If you participate in an event this year, say thank you to the race director. If you appreciate what they do and the event they put on for you, tell them so. 4 If you see a volunteer at a race, express your gratitude for their help. If that person happens to be younger than 12, give them a high-five along with your words of appreciation. 4 Share your stories with us. Your successes and triumphs inspire us and we like to share them with our readers so that they, too, can be inspired by the life you lead. I probably close this editor’s letter each year the same way, so I’ll stick with tradition… I hope you enjoy this issue you hold in your hand — our 2015 Event Guide. We’ve put a great deal of effort into this issue and we are honored to continue to provide information, inspiration and education through the pages of RaceCenter. I also want to extend a special thank you to our contributing staff, as well as our advertisers for their continued support. I wish you the best for the year ahead and I look forward to seeing you at the races! Warm Regards, Brook Gardner brook@racecenter.com

The event is USATFsanctioned, and distances are certified for accuracy making this a good race option for establishing a benchmark for the season’s progress. Briefs Bend, OR to Host New Marathon and Half in 2015 The Bend Marathon is coming, with its inaugural launch on April 26th. The new event will be the only marathon taking participants through the city of Bend. Starting in downtown Bend, the course travels through the heart of the city, including iconic Drake Park, before heading along the Deschutes River, winding past the Old Mill District, and heading up through the Tetherow neighborhood. The race finishes at 10 Barrel Brewing where the post-race party will commence. The course will include fantastic views of snow-capped mountains, and the terrain is approximately 85% pavement and 15% gravel trail. There will be a half marathon option for those wanting to log fewer miles this winter. The new race is a creation from the team that brought Oregon the Gorgeous Relay. It is just one of many new races they are launching in 2015. Run / 04.26.2015 www.bend-marathon.com

Bloomsday Readies for Another Huge Event The Lilac Bloomsday Run isn’t just back in 2015, it’s back for the 39th time — a testament to a well organized event. It has been a bucket list race for many runners, with more than 50,000 participants showing up last year. The Bloomsday Run is also the RRCA Championship 12K (7.46 miles) race. This is one of the, if not the, most affordable races with an entry fee of just $18 if you register before April 14th. If you’re a running and health enthusiast, the latest fitness products and services will be showcased at the free trade show happening at the Spokane Convention Center Friday and Saturday prior to Sunday’s event. Eugene Marathon Moves to May The Eugene Marathon, being dubbed as the “Mother of All Marathons,” is moving its date to May this year with new additions to be introduced during this Mother’s Day weekend of events. The festivities will run May 8-10, and will be hosted at Track Town, USA, home of Oregon University’s famed Hayward Field. All the established running events are slated to happen, including the Kids Duck Dash, 5K, Half Marathon and the ninth annual Eugene Marathon. The Half and Full Marathon courses start outside Hayward Field and run through nine miles of Eugene’s streets and five miles of Springfield’s streets. The marathon course continues winding the rest of the way along the Willamette River bike path and ends on the track at Hayward Field. “No single place better connects the past, present and future of road running than at the Eugene Marathon. Every year a majority of competitors say finishing on Historic Hayward Field is the highlight of the weekend,”commented Race Director Richard Maher when asked about the significance of hosting the event at Hayward Field. “As the birthplace of modern running in America, Eugene and TrackTown USA hold a special place in the hearts of runners, fans and volunteers.” If you like to run, and enjoy

Cascade Relays Brings Bend Beer Chase to the Masses Cascade Relays recently launched a brand new oneday relay race in Bend, adding to their already popular event line-up which includes the Cascade Lakes Relay and Spokane to Sandpoint Relay. The Bend Beer Chase launched this past Fall and was well received in the Central Oregon town well known for both its endurance athletes and beer aficionados. Six-person teams managed 12 legs across a 70 mile course that traveled through Bend, Redmond, and Sisters. Along the way participants experienced 14 of the best craft breweries in the region. The 2015 Bend Beer Chase is slated for Saturday, June 6th. If you have an interest in overnight relay races look into two additional events occurring later this summer. The flagship race, Cascade Lakes Relay, is so popular that a lottery is required for entry. This event begins July 31st at Diamond Lake Resort, then runs through the spectacularly diverse terrain of the Central Oregon Cascades, High Desert, and along the very scenic Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway before finishing at Riverbend Park in Bend. Spokane to Sandpoint Relay, scheduled for August 14th and 15th, is also an overnight relay that begins at the top of Mt. Spokane and travels the entire length of the Centennial Trail along the Spokane River to Coeur d’Alene before finishing on the beach of Lake Pend Oreille in Sandpoint, ID.

Briefs Vancouver USA Marathon Celebrating Five Years The Vancouver USA Marathon (VUM) celebrates its fifth anniversary this coming June. In a short period of time, the Vancouver, Washington, event has met with great success not only determined by the thousands of satisfied and returning athletes, but by the community support and accolades it receives. Runner’s World in 2014 highlighted nine of the best new Marathons in the United States, with the VUM rising from a crop of hundreds of Marathons. The Marathon course starts at Esther Short Park and traverses along the Columbia River waterfront past Vancouver Lake before circling back toward the park and finish. The relatively flat course is on a mix of paved recreational paths and city roads closed to traffic making this a favorable course for setting a personal best marathon time. To celebrate five years, runners who have participated in the Half or Full distance events all five years will receive a special gift. The VUM also hosts a Half Marathon, A Freedom 5K, and a Kids Dash, as well as a 3-day outdoor Active Expo, the Vancouver Saturday Market. The VUM is the only Marathon with a Summer Brewfest spanning 3 days and featuring 25 breweries and 50 taps. The Vancouver USA Marathon partnered with a RRCA-certified running coach to offer several training programs to help those looking for assistance, motivation, and training partners. Visit their website for race registration and to sign up for the Full or Half Marathon training programs. 119th Boston Marathon to be Held April 20

Go Beyond Racing’s Wide Race Selection Go Beyond Racing has a full roster of races on their 2015 schedule, including the Portland Trail Series and the Northwest Mountain Trail Series. The Portland Spring Trail Series sold out in five days, but the Summer and Fall Series has yet to open registration. The series takes place Wednesday evenings starting early May and running through October.

The 119th running of the Boston Marathon will take place on Monday, April 20, 2015. Last year Meb Keflezighi won the historic event and became the first American man to do so since Greg Meyer in 1983. He held off two charging Kenyans who placed a mere 11 and 13 seconds behind. The Boston Marathon is one the most famous Marathons in the world, drawing 36,000 participants in 2014 from across the globe. Last year more than 300 organizations received donations from the $38.4 million dollars raised for charity. The Boston Athletic Association has developed a program to assist charitable organizations by providing guaranteed entries for fundraising. Visit their website to learn more about how to get involved. If you have your heart set on racing this historic event, you’ll need to submit a time from a qualifying race that is within the time listed below for your age and gender.

The Northwest Mountain Trail Series consists of seven challenging courses of varying distances and terrain and kicks off with the Smith Rock Ascent on May 10th in Central Oregon. The Mt. Hood 50, which moves to a lottery this year, joins the Smith Rock Ascent along with the Volcanic 50, Mountain Lakes 100, and Elk-Kings Mountain Traverse in this points scoring series. If you’re a trail runner and wish to experience courses across Oregon and Washington, look up Go Beyond Racing and start crafting your season.

Each year, thousands of athletes congregate in sunny Central Oregon for the three-day sports extravaganza. Events include the long course triathlon, endurance duathlon, marathon (BAA Boston qualifier), half marathon, Olympic-distance triathlon and duathlon, 5K and 10K run/walks, three kid’s events, and the Tour de Crest bike tours that give family and friends of the competing athletes the chance to ride some or all of the same courses. These 26 and 55 mile noncompetitive rides will take place on Friday, June 26. The weekend includes the Sports & Fitness Expo, great food, live entertainment, and a Beer Garden provided by Sunriver’s Village Bar and Grill and Bend’s Deschutes Brewery. Briefs 2015 USA Mountain Running Championships Set for July 25 in Bend, Oregon USATF’s Mountain Ultra Trail Executive Committee unanimously voted on November 6 to accept the bid from Visit Bend to host the 2015 USA Mountain Running Championships on July 25. The event will be held at Mt. Bachelor Ski Area and will feature a four-kilometer loop course with approx 800’ climbing. Designed by 2011 World Mountain Running Champion and Bend resident Max King, the terrain is primarily single track on the uphill portion with a short section of dirt road at the top of the loop and a mix of single track and dirt road on the descent. The course is akin to a figure eight although at no time does the loop cross over itself. Women will run two loops, while men run three loops. There will be separate starts for the men and women, and also a citizen’s race of one loop (4 kilometers). Non-USATF runners can participate in the women’s race, the men’s race, or the citizen’s open race, but only the USATF-registered runners would qualify for the USATF Championships division and awards. The Mountain Championships in Bend will be the sole selection race for the U.S. Mountain Running Team where six men and four women will earn the opportunity to represent the United States at the 2015 World Mountain Running Championships in Wales on September 19th. Along with the USA Mountain Running Championships, Bend will host the second annual Collegiate Running Association Mountain Running Championships. Run / 07.25.2015 www.usatf.org

Raise the Bar Events is launching RUN for 24, a 24-hour team trail run relay at Flying Horseshoe Ranch northeast of Cle Elum, Washington. The event starts at high noon on August 1st and continues until noon the following day. Teams comprised of 4-8 runners will set up camp in pine forests northeast of Cle Elum and alternate running a scenic 6.2-mile route. At the gun, the first athletes of each team will head into the forest. The first mile takes them through ‘Dem Bones’ trail up to the ‘Steer’s Head Loop’ with slightly rolling, unpaved terrain that offers tranquility and great views. The team who runs the most laps wins.

Stephanie’s Advice: How to Create a Successful Plan STEPHANIE HOWE, MS

Running, like so many other things in life, tends to work better with a plan. Sure, it’s fun to be spontaneous, but some structure can help you stay on track and keep perspective.

Picking Goals Each year, as the running season winds down, I take some time to reflect on the past season. Examining the big picture, rather than isolated events, can help me see trends or patterns. I ask myself questions such as “Did I reach my goals?” “What went well?” “What do I need to work on?” From my observations, I begin to set goals for the next year. I start by thinking about a one-word mantra or a phrase that will set the tone. It helps to do a brainstorming session during this phase to get my thoughts flowing. I use lots of charts, balloons, lists, and arrows when I scribble down my thoughts. From this scrawled list of ideas, I refine my thoughts into more realistic, tangible goals that I can work towards. I try to set goals that challenge me, but are also attainable with hard work and dedication. While setting goals, it’s important to keep in mind that they don’t have to be performance-oriented goals. Sometimes the best goals are to “have fun” or “stay injury free.” The challenge is taking these ideas and turning them into quantitative actions. To do

climate might be tough to get to peak fitness for. Also, the timing between races can become an issue if several “A” races occur too close together. Stacking races is common in

this, think about what makes running fun to you. Maybe this means running with friends certain days of the week or exploring a new trail each weekend. Turning these types of goals into something tangible makes them more achievable.

Performance Goals and Choosing Races Of course, goals can be performance related. This is the case for most runners. We tend to plan our training around races and

achieving fitness. My advice for choosing races is to pick a couple of “A” races per year. These will be your key races: you want to be fit, rested, and ready to run your best at these events. Think about the time of year and the spacing between your “A” races. For example, an “A” race in January in a snowy

races in your yearly plan. “C” races are races that are purely for fun. These are the types of races that you might sign up for at the last minute or are not distances or in sports you’ve focused your training on. The inclusion of “C” races is important, as they allow for some spontaneity and can also be humbling.

Write a Plan For all goals, performance and nonperformance alike, outlining the path you will take is important for success. A goal without a plan is like trying to build a house without any blueprints. Where do you start? If there are no guidelines or methodological approach to your training, you are less likely to be successful. No matter what your goal, write your plan out on paper. The physical act of writing down your plan makes it more real and holds you accountable. Start by writing out the key dates or races that you will focus on. From there, outline how you will prepare for each event. If you are preparing for a longer race, how will you increase your mileage while still allowing for recovery? Knowledge about the principles of training or exercise physiology is useful for performance goals. Some runners seek out coaches for help with these types of goals. It’s also important to identify any life events, travel plans, or work conflicts that you anticipate over the next year. These events may interfere with your ability to train or more importantly, to recover. Schedule your training to be minimal during these times to avoid getting rundown. It’s not a great idea to do a long run, quickly change and head to a wedding where you spend all night dancing and drinking wine (I may be speaking from experience here…). Once you have a general outline of your goals and plan, you can start to fill in the de-

Big Mountain Races add another element of adventure to trail running. Whether you’re a grizzled veteran or a gawking, bright-eyed newbie — big mountain courses demand respect. Here’s my ode to some of the more notable Big Mountain Races in the Northwest.

The 50K has 6,000 feet of gain — half of that in the first 8 miles — while the 25K has 2,500 feet. After being bussed 15 miles to the start, the course works its way back through the lush canopy to finish near Blodgett, OR. Food and Water. You aren’t going to get a cup of water every mile or two, so you’ll need to carry a handheld water bottle or a hydration pack and some calories (gels, blocks, a bar). Trail races are logistically harder to support, so plan on aid stations every 5-8 miles — typical for any ultra distance trail race. Times are arbitrary. Depending on elevation and difficulty of terrain in trail races, you’ll probably be power hiking some of the steeper sections of the course and stopping to take in some gorgeous views (don’t forget that smartphone to snap some photos). Turn it on airplane mode though; you don’t want to spoil the nature experience by babbling and texting on the trail (besides, it’s bad etiquette!). Plan on being out on the trail for a few hours — probably close to 50% longer than that road marathon time. Be prepared. Adventures in the mountains means being ready with some layers in case a storm blows in and you’re still a few miles from the finish. Throw in a lightweight windbreaker and emergency blanket in case you roll an ankle. Be Nice. Trail folks are notoriously more laid back than the pavement-pounding road running camp. A lot of runners are just covering the distance and enjoying themselves. The aid station volunteers are there to help you but aren’t getting paid, so don’t be rude and don’t forget to be polite and say thanks. They’re graciously giving their time to make your experience better. Leave No Trace. Unlike road races, trail race logistics are more complicated. Don’t litter, and be sure to pack all your trash out. A buddy and I have a mantra when running in the woods: “If not you, then who?” When you see trash on the trail, take initiative and snag that gel wrapper someone accidentally dropped and throw it in the trash at the next aid station. Some trail races are starting to go cupless to cut down on trash and

TrackTown USA — Where Legends are Made For those who know the history of Steve Prefontaine and Eugene, Oregon, it is undeniable that the ghostly presence of his and other world-renowned athletes is felt at Hayward Field and on the trails around Autzen Stadium, home of the University of Oregon Ducks. “Eugene is known as TrackTown USA, with a rich history in track and field that draws enthusiasts to our area to run the trails, see Pre’s Rock in person, and cheer from the stands of historic Hayward Field,” said Jessica Chestnut, Social Media and PR Manager for Conventions and Sports with Eugene, Cascades & Coast. “Between the combination of athletic heroes that have trained and raced here, the internationally recognized events that seem to grow each year, a highly renowned venue in historic Hayward Field, and even the origins of the most recognized athletic brand on the planet, it’s only natural that our area celebrates track and field the way it does.” While coming to Eugene can be just for spectating, watching greatness at work (the US Olympic Trials for Track and Field will be held in Eugene for the third straight year in 2015) and eating at the famous Track Town Pizza across from campus, there are plenty of opportunities for visitors to lace up their own sneakers, put on a helmet or head to

the coast for sandboarding. The “mere mortals” of running who visit Eugene can go for a run on Pre’s Trails, a 4-mile loop along the Willamette River near Autzen Stadium. Or, head south to the Amazon Trail in South Eugene or the Ridgeline Trail that includes 12 miles of paths and multiple trailheads. For a more challenging option, run up Spencer Butte (2,065 feet) and take in the amazing views of Eugene and the Willamette Valley from the top. In 2015, the 9th annual running of the Eugene Marathon will take place on Mother’s Day (Sunday, May 10, 2015), and will again draw participants from across North America. Dubbed the “Mother of all Marathons” for 2015, the Eugene Marathon includes a full weekend of festivities as well as a 5K, Half Marathon and a Kids Duck Dash. “The annual Eugene Marathon attracts an average of nearly ten-thousand participants and has been named a “10 Best” and “10 Greenest” race in America,” said Courtney Heily, Marketing Director for the Marathon. “The race begins and ends at historic Hayward Field, with runners completing the final two hundred yards on the track itself. The course is USATF-certified.” To celebrate Independence Day, Eugene hosts the Aquafina Butte to Butte, the oldest and largest road race. Participants

can do either the 10K, 5K or 4.5-mile walk. While the original race course climbed Spencer Butte and included a “stomping” at the top before runners raced down the hill (think sore quads!), the current 10K course includes a run up Donald Street Hill and a flat, fast finish. Another popular local race is the Run to Stay Warm Half Marathon, 5K, 10K and Kids’ race. Taking place on the Sunday before Thanksgiving (November 22, 2015), the 9th annual race benefits families in Eugene who cannot afford their utility bills. This partnership with the Eugene Water and Electric Board (EWEB) raised more than $115,000 before the 2014 race. “We picked this weekend because it goes along with the theme,” said Race Director, Shelley Stephenson. “It’s the time of year when families start needing assistance. It brings awareness to the community that there is a program at EWEB to help Eugene area families with their utility bills. No one seems to mind the frozen noses and ponytails, or the wet running gear. I think participants feel good about what they are doing so it’s a minor sacrifice.” In addition to the almost weekly 5K races that take place in and around Eugene (go to www.racecenter.com or www.eclecticedgeracing.com for complete listings of 2015

races), the Oregon Track Club hosts an OTC Running Series on the second Thursday of each month. These are informal 5K run/ walks that are timed and only cost $5 for non-OTC members. If you do want to watch top runners and athletes compete, the NCAA Track and Field National Championships are being held every spring at Hayward Field until 2021. Tradition holds strong with the annual Prefontaine Classic heading into its 41st year and is the longest running track and field meet in the country. “The Pre Classic draws approximately 25% of its spectators (total of 12,000-13,500) from outside the region,” said meet director Tom Jordan. “The estimated economic impact is over $1 million.” In 2014, five meet records were broken and it was the 17th year in a row the event has sold out. Eugene and nearby Willamette Pass is not only recognized for its running, though. The city, located approximately two hours south of Portland on Interstate 5, has its fair share of memorable mountain biking as well. “The International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) designated two ‘Epic Rides’ in Lane County (Waldo Lake Trail in 2012, and Olallie Ridge in 2013), an accolade saved only for a handful of ‘demanding, singletrack adventures in a natural setting’ around the U.S.,” said Chestnut. “The entire Oakridge area itself has received prestigious accolades from the IMBA, with a ‘Silver Level’ Ride Center designation, awarded to only a handful of places worldwide.” It is only a short hour drive east of Eugene and allows mountain bike enthusiasts to ride for miles in the Willamette National Forest. “Mountain biking is essentially right out the back door with hundreds of miles of available trails in surrounding BLM and Forest Service land,” said Heily. In the winter months, the Central Cascades are a playground for skiers and snowboarders as well. Outside Magazine has named Eugene one of the best bike-commuting-cities in the nation. Whether for fitness or commute, the bike paths around Eugene are the envy of

much larger cities. On May 31, 2015, the Oregon Gran Fondo will start and end in Cottage Grove, Oregon (just south of Eugene on I-5). Cyclists can choose from a Gran (long) 117 mile-ride, Medio (medium) 71-mile ride, or a Piccolo (short) 31-mile ride. The routes take riders through the Siuslaw National Forest and up through the scenic Willamette Valley. For something a little different, head west from Eugene to the Oregon Coast for dune buggy rides on the sand dunes of Florence, OR. “The dunes provide a somewhat unexpected recreational opportunity in the form

of sandboarding (imagine snowboarding, but on the sand),” Chestnut said. “Sand Master Park in Florence (billed as the “World’s First Sandboard Park”) covers 40 acres of private, sculpted sand dunes surrounded by another 200 acres of public dunes and forest.” If a long day of running, biking, sandboarding, and watching Olympic-caliber athletes makes you thirsty or hungry, Eugene has plenty to offer for libations and nourishment. Local craft beer, Willamette Valley Pinot Noir wines and locally grown and raised food are staples at the restaurants and pubs around town. The cultural experience is also rich with local artisans at the Saturday Market and a very active performing arts center (Hult). “For a city its size, Eugene boasts worldclass entertainment venues, museums, art galleries and recreation opportunities,” Heily said. “’Quality of life’” is used a lot when people describe why they live here.” • Eugene Marathon: www.eugenemarathon.com Butte to Butte: www.buttetobutte.runnerspace.com Oregon Track Club: oregontrackclub.runnerspace.com Prefontaine Classic: www.runnerspace.com/PreClassic Oregon Gran Fondo: www.dark30sports.com Visiting Eugene: www.eugenecascadescoast.org/eugene Run to Stay Warm: www.eweb.org/runtostaywarm

What Makes a Race Work? SCOTT LOMMERS

What makes a race work? It seems a strange question, as all of us have favorite races that we know well. Those races are clearly working. If they can do it, then what could be so hard about building a successful race and improving and growing it year after year? Well… There are hundreds of running, cycling, and triathlon races in the Northwest every year. Dozens of new races arrive every racing season, replacing those that invariably fade away. Make no mistake — races, much like restaurants, see both success and failure. Then there are those races that make welcome yearly returns, consistently drawing larger numbers of participants. Where is the line between failure and success in the race business? What makes one race disappear, not missed if remembered at all, while another race lasts 20 or 30 years or more? What exactly makes a race work? “A well-organized race with a turnkey registration program, affordable entry fees, a compelling beneficiary or cause, a flat and fast course and a good shirt and medal just isn’t enough anymore. You’re competing with themed, unique experience events that are part of a national series with large marketing budgets,” says Jeff Orswell, President of Orswell Events. Orswell plans and produces numerous events, including the Shore Run, the Labor Day Half and

46

the Seahawks 12K Run at The Landing. “Someone starting up a new race needs to ask themselves, ‘what’s our draw going to be and why will participants choose our race over others?’” The draw has to be original or inspiring because the competition is fierce. Even in the rainy Northwest, races occur year-round. In the busy months between April and October, dozens of races crowd every weekend. How can any new race stand out in the crowd? “Good, new races can be created when you identify a need or fill a void,” says Orswell. “In 2009, we recognized that Seattle Seahawks fans here in the Northwest had very few opportunities to show their team spirit and take part in a fan activity in the quiet off season spring months. We worked with the Seahawks and The Landing in Renton, Washington to create the Seahawks 12k Run at The Landing, giving people a unique opportunity to run around the Seahawks practice facility and headquarters in their jerseys, face paint and eye black. With the Super Bowl victory in 2014, the race hosted over 10,000 participants.” “In the first year, you are setting a precedent with everything you’re doing,” says Orswell. “You need to invest in your event and make sure that you deliver a quality participant experience. Like with anything, people who have a good experience will tell five friends and with a bad experience, they’ll tell ten.”

ABOVE: There are well-run races, popular races, and successful races. Then, there are institutions: races that have been around as long as anyone can remember and draw huge numbers of participants year after year. The Mercer Island Rotary Run held in March each year is one such institution. PHOTO: Sherwin Eng / Brightroom Inc. LEFT: Spectator support is another piece of the puzzle when it comes to race success. PHOTO: FlashPro

Of course, a good idea is just the beginning. Good ideas without solid execution backing them fail just as quickly as bad ideas. The race industry has seen some very public failures lately. A few fledging race promoters have been caught seemingly unaware at the sheer amount of planning and labor it takes to pull off a successful event. “Today’s means of communication are incredibly fast, which is both good and bad,” says Chad Sperry, Race Director at Breakaway Promotions, which organizes races such as Bridge of the Gods Half Marathon and Columbia Gorge Marathon. “If a race drops the ball and does not order enough porta potties, then there is now a vehicle for people to air their frustrations out, not only to their fellow participants but to a broad audience through Facebook, Twitter and other means. That said, if you do an outstanding job and take good care of your participants, it can also be a way to drive the success of increasing registrations by people promoting an event they love to their friends and family.” Participants need to shoulder some of the burden of promoting the good races and sharing information on the bad ones. In the blazing fast, wired world today, athletes can vote with both their wallets and their keyboards – and they should. Athletes know the good races from the bad — so let your friends know as well! “I would strongly encourage participants to do a little research about the events they participate in,” says Sperry. “Look at websites, Facebook, and Twitter for input from past competitors. Also look at how people have February/March 2015 racecenter.com

What Makes a Race Work? rated an event on different blogs or website posts. Finally, contact the local chamber and visitor associations to get recommendations for events in the community. We always encourage anyone and everyone to do their homework.” There are well-run races, popular races, and successful races. Then there are institutions: races that have been around as long as anyone can remember and draw huge numbers of participants year after year. How exactly does a race get to be an institution – a race that has been run for 20 or 30-plus years? “Most of the events with that long of tenure are deeply rooted in the community they operate in,” says Sperry. “An example, we have run the Cascade Cycling Classic Pro/Am race the last eight years in Bend, for the Mt. Bachelor Sports Education Foundation that owns it. It is currently the longest running professional cycling stage race in the country, celebrating its 36th year next year. The community involvement and support for the event is enormous both from a financial and a volunteer standpoint. There is a certain amount of ownership and pride that helps it to thrive.” Volunteers are the Importantly though, even rock-solid institution lifeblood of many events which happen each year races don’t rest on their laurels. These races strive to only with the support of improve, to innovate and, most decisively, listen to the local community. PHOTO: FlashPro participants and give them what they want. “Races that have been around for that long really know their participants and why they support the event,” says Orswell. “With that understanding, you figure out ways to expand and improve those elements of your event. The Mercer Island Half and the Shore Run are both very cause-driven events whose primary focus is to raise money and awareness for cancer prevention. They offer participants whose lives have been touched by this horrible disease to fight back and find support from others. Other races are more about the race itself, like the Labor Day Half, which offers one of the flattest courses in the country allowing participants to PR and compete in the Pacific Northwest Track & Field Half Marathon Championship. We’ve tried to identify what each of our race’s core draws is and highlight and expand those elements whenever possible.” Even for the best-organized races, challenges abound. Producing a quality event is serious, year-round work with serious, year-round complications. Unfortunately, some issues are impossible to predict and can confound the best race directors. “Time and weather,” said Sperry. “On race day, the promoter and his or her key staff can easily put in a 20-plus hour day to make sure everything goes well and is dialed in. The other thing is the uncertainty that weather brings: long hours out on course being exposed to cold, hot, or windy conditions takes its toll.” The racer’s favorite swag, the race shirt, causes its own, unique headaches. “Shirts are the bane of every race director’s existence,” said Orswell. “Being able to accurately predict quantities and size breakdowns and ensure that the correct logo is included for every sponsor that needs to be on there when having to place the order months prior to the race is a challenge every single time. Managing a budget and cash flow on a large race is also very challenging as most of the production costs are incurred months prior to the event, but the majority of participants on shorter distance races will wait right up until race week to register.” In the end, it’s fairly simple to determine what makes a race work: It’s a race director willing to put in the time and the effort. If that seems like a nebulous conclusion to determine on your own, it’s definitely not to the athletes that have done the race in the past. They know, precisely, which RD’s are putting in the effort. Seek out their knowledge. “We take a lot of pride in what we do and we believe in giving back the most bang for the competitors buck,” says Sperry. “Under-charge and over-deliver is what we strive to achieve at each and every event.” •

GEAR PICKS BROOK GARDNER

BROOKS

Ravenna 6 $120 | www.brooksrunning.com This has been my go-to mild-stability shoe from Brooks for a number of years, and the Ravenna 6 is another pleaser. The midsole and outsole are the same as the previous version, but the 6 has a completely new upper which is thinner and more breathable. The heel collar is also new, and Brooks has added an adjustable saddle mechanism in the midsole. This is designed to keep the foot more secure inside the shoe. New colors round out the offering from this Seattle-based company.

FEEDBACK SPORTS

$120 | www.blackburndesign.com Whether you commute by bike or like an occasional night ride, the Blackburn Central Front Smart Light is just that — smart. A built-in light sensor measures the ambient light around you and adjusts the brightness accordingly. Not only does this take some of the guesswork out of riding in the dark conditions, but it saves battery power. The various lighting modes (smart, high beam, low beam and strobe) are controlled by a dial at the rear of the body. The selected mode is illuminated with a back-lit LED that changes color to indicate remaining battery life — an extremely handy feature. Charging is done through a Micro USB port located on the underside of the unit, with a full charge offering roughly eight hours of juice when operated on the “smart” setting. This light will put out up to 500 lumens, which is bright enough for unlit bike trails and streets alike. The Central Front Smart Light is a snap to install and it detaches from its cradle with ease. Its compact design, battery-saving smart setting and light output make the Blackburn Central Smart Light a worthy investment in both riding enjoyment and safety.

Pro-Elite Bicycle Work Stand $265 ($285 with tote bag) | www.feedbacksports.com Golden, Colorado’s Feedback Sports produces a wide variety of bicycle-related products, including storage options, accessories and work stands. I had the chance to get familiar with their Pro-Elite Bicycle Work Stand this past fall and found it very handy, and far better than leaning bikes against cars and walls to do simple things like oil a chain. The stand’s collapsible design allows you to set up and stow away with ease. If you’re like most, keeping a bike stand set up at all times is something you likely don’t have room for, so its portability is beautiful. The clamp adjusts to accommodate just about any tube size and features adjustable height and a stable base that’s designed to work on uneven surfaces. For an extra $20 I’d recommend purchasing the padded tote bag. The stand will support up to 85 pounds and the anodized finish prevents corrosion — a nice touch for this handy piece of equipment that can be used indoors and out year-round.

BROOKS

Essential ½ Zip III $65 | www.brooksrunning.com One word: soft. If you like running garments made from plush fabrics that perform as well as they look, then the Essential ½ Zip III may fit the bill. Surprisingly, this super-comfy running top wicks moisture quite well, which you’d never guess when putting it on for the first time. Thumbholes, a back zip pocket and reflective accents are nice touches as well. This versatile piece does double duty as a great running top for the elements of the Northwest as well as a great wear-aroundtown garment.

VELOCITY

Aileron $733 (CX or road build, DT Swiss Competition spokes) $988 (CX or road build , Sapim CX-Ray bladed spokes) www.velocityusa.com Built tough, built by hand, and built in the USA — just a few reasons why I love Velocity Wheels and the great products they’ve been churning out over the years. The Aileron was been out for a little more than a year, and I finally got the chance to put them through their paces this past fall during cyclocross season. Like most ‘cross racers, I tend to be a little rough on my equipment. Despite the wear and tear, the Ailerons I used are as true now as the day I pulled them out of the box. Weights vary by spoke count, and they have a few build options and colors to choose from, all of which can be found on their website. These aerodynamic, tubeless-ready 25mm-wide rims are disc-specific and can be used on road (disc) bikes, as well as off-road.

2014 Bakers Dozen Series Recap STEPHANIE FOSTER

The 2014 Bakers Dozen Series was comprised of a variety of half marathons in cities and venues throughout the Northwest. The 13 unique races included: Heart Breaker, Whidbey Island, Hop Hop, Capital City, Tonkin For the Love of Schools, Vancouver USA, Pacific Crest, Fueled by Fine Wine, Stumptown, Lacamas Lake, Sunriver Half for a Cause, Black Diamond, and Champoeg. The majority of these half marathons return to the calendar in 2015, though the series itself is taking a hiatus. For dates and information about these races, check out the online calendar on RaceCenter.com or the Event Guide in this issue. Based on the series points rankings tracked on Athlinks.com, four Top Performers were determined. These athletes won free entry into these races in 2015. For complete results for each of the 13 races: www.racecenter.com/results

Congratulations to the 2014 Bakers Dozen Top Performers Top Male: Rob Russell, Redmond, OR Top Female: Janelle Ralph, Gold Hill, OR Top Masters Male: Mike Grimshaw, Portland, OR Top Masters Female: Kelly Chang, Portland, OR Special congratulations go to George Power of Vancouver, BC — the one athlete who completed all thirteen races in 2014! George’s goal was to be the first Canadian to run the complete series. George was delighted to learn that he was the only athlete in the United States and Canada to complete all thirteen races. He attained this distinction by literally planning an entire year around the half marathon schedule. George had a hard time picking his favorite race, but he said the toughest (although beautiful) race was Fueled by Fine Wine, due to the mighty Dundee hills. Stumptown and Lacamas Lake also proved to be challenging because they were on back-to-back days over one weekend. George and his wife drove from their home in British Columbia to every race and found that it was a great way for them to explore the Northwest. Some of the things about the races that stood out to George included the high level of organization, the greater value at a lower cost along with “better food and better beer.” George said that having beer sponsors for nearly every event is “so cool” and he noted appreciatively, “at the Easter race [Hop Hop] there were even mimosas!” George appreciated “the community feel” of the events, the cause-driven participants and volunteers, and “the impressive community involvement, from high school bands to course workers, who come out to support the events, the causes and to volunteer.” Three other athletes finished close behind George in the number of races completed: Beyonda Likins of Olympia, WA had 12 races under her belt, and Trina Branch of McMinnville, OR and Sally Lynch of Tigard, OR each completed 10 races. Congratulations to everyone who participated in another great season of runTOP: George Power of Vancouver, BC added quite a bit of hardware to his medal ning in the Northwest. For a full listing of half collection 2014, completing all 13 of the marathons and other events taking place in races in the 2014 Bakers Dozen Series.
