When I was in 7th grade, I decided to try out for track. My bulky 5’10”, 185-pound frame did not give me the speed, ease, or lung capacity to fly around the track like some of my teammates. But hey, that’s why they call it track and field — and the field part was where I thought I could have some fun. While my speedster friends rocketed around the track and went out for leisurely runs through the neighborhoods close to school, I made my home in the confines of the shot put and discus rings. Athletic endeavors heavy on technique have never been my forte. Shot put and discus were right up there with golf when it came to both talent and patience, of which I had neither. Thankfully, our science teacher (an avid distance runner) knew a thing or two about both of these throwing events. Mr. Dobratz taught me some tough lessons in patience and provided the one-on-one coaching that I needed to improve. Most of all, he provided encouragement...

FEEL THE FAST
The weekly track meets were long and my results varied from week to week. Monday practices would typically involve a recap of the previous week’s results, goal setting, and a strategy to reach those milestones. One thing that drove my frustration was my competitive nature. I had been playing baseball and swimming on a team for years. Those things came naturally to me, most likely because I learned them at a young age. Shot put and discus were completely different. I had no muscle memory for either, and despite my attempts, no amount of strength and muscle could help me overcome the technique, finesse and patience needed to tame these track and field beasts. Mr. Dobratz realized that I was trying to “muscle” the discus into the field during practice one day. His advice, “Stop trying to throw the discus. Focus on the technique and let it sail!” Easy for him to say... He attached the tape measure to the ring and began walking out into the field with the other end. When he stopped, he said he was standing at a distance where I had thrown many times. For some reason, I couldn’t get the disc to come within five feet of him. His patience never waned, and his encouragement was relentless. Like a drone, I continued to throw, and throw, and finally achieved the “sail” that he had been alluding to. The disc sailed over his head and he clapped with excitement. He trotted back towards the ring and said with a grin, “How did that feel? Could you feel the difference?” I admitted that I was happy with the result and could finally understand what he had been preaching, and how all of the technique could come together to yield better results. With a sly look on his face, he quipped, “I was actually standing 10 feet further in the field then your furthest throw to date.” It took me a minute to realize that I had been conned into setting a new personal best. We both had a good laugh. I thanked him for his patience with me and prank he pulled that led me to push beyond my limits and focus on what I could do rather than what I could not. Goal setting can be tricky. Set them too high and they become unachievable — set them too low and the feeling of accomplishment doesn’t seem to materialize. Mr. Dobratz taught me that sometimes the best people to help you set goals are those other than yourself. People who know your potential and who believe in you. In retrospect, I realize that I’ve continued to surround myself with people who remind me a lot of Mr. Dobratz — those people who constantly push me, even when I don’t realize it. I’m a better person for those people, and will always be grateful for their support. See you at the races! Warm Regards, Brook Gardner brook@racecenter.com

Hagg Lake Triathlon Turns Thirty-Three The Hagg Lake Triathlon on July 11th is one of the oldest triathlons in the country. Originally part of the Bud Light Triathlon Series in the 80’s, it still draws a deep and competitive field. The course offers a true test with its rolling hills on both the bike and run portions of the event. You can choose either the Olympic or Sprint distance triathlon; and those preferring just a bike and run can opt for the Olympic distance duathlon. Become part of the triathlon tradition and make the Hagg Lake Triathlon one of your summer stops. Triathlon / 07.11.2015 www.whyracingevents.com
Running of the Bulls You don’t have to travel to Spain to risk being gored by bulls, Pink Buffalo Racing is bringing the experience to Eugene, OR. The course is an easy 4 miles on pavement, but you’ll need to outrun the bulls disguised as roller derby girls. Race directors will supply the red sash, but you’ll be responsible for wearing the traditional white. The roller derby bulls will be let loose shortly after race start and they’ll be on the prowl to catch you. Head to Alton Baker Park on July 12th for a little Sunday fun. Suntop 30 and 50 Mile Mountain Bike Race The White River area, near Mt Rainier National Park, showcases some of Western Washington’s most famous single track, long grueling climbs, and stunning mountaintop scenery. The NW Epic Series has combined two of the most challenging loops in the valley, Sun Top and Noble Knob, to add a fourth race to their 2015 series. Both the 30-mile and 50mile races will be held on July 18th, starting and finishing at the White River Airfield. The courses offer a mix of steep ascents and technical descents, peppered with sections of gravel road riding, and spectacular views. The 50-mile course climbs 8,500 ft, while the 30-mile course ascends 5,500 ft.
For those in the Central Oregon area looking for something more grueling, the High Cascades 100 occurs on the same day in Bend. As of the writing of this piece, there are still a few slots open. Mountain Biking / 07.18.2015 www.nwepicseries.com

Eugene to host 2021 track and field World Championships Due to the surging popularity of track and field in the American market, the IAAF bypassed the normal bidding process and awarded Eugene the 2021 track and field World Championships. Eugene was unsuccessful in its bid to host the 2019 championships, but renewed its efforts for 2021 and has been rewarded for it. The financial support offered by the governor of Oregon, the United States Olympic Committee involvement, and NBC’s commitment to produce and broadcast the event, influenced the decision. This will mark the first time the event will be held in the United States. “We are deeply honored to be given the opportunity to host the world’s greatest track and field athletes on U.S. soil,” commented USATF CEO Max Siegel.
For the first time in history, the track and field World Championships will be held in the U.S. Oregon’s Galen Rupp and Dathan Ritzenhein will undoubtedly be looking for a good showing on their home turf at Hayward Field in Eugene. PHOTO: Victah / PhotoRun.net
The IAAF World Championships — a biennial nine-day competition featuring the world’s top track and field athletes — will be the largest sporting event in the world in 2021, with nearly 2,000 participants representing as many as 213 different countries from around the world, states TrackTown USA.

BOOK REVIEW:
Trailhead by Lisa Jhung As a longtime friend of Lisa Jhung, it’s only appropriate that I give her some muchdeserved accolades for her new book, Trailhead. Lisa is well-known for her writing talent in the running world, and she brings not only her gift with words, but also her love affair with trail running to the pages of her new book. For those looking to venture farther into the world of trail running, or for those seeking equipment selection guidance, hydration strategies and wildlife avoidance tactics, Trailhead offers a little bit of everything. Her words, accompanied by fantastic illustrations created by Charlie Layton, find their way into the pages of the book. Kudos to Lisa on a well-written guidebook for the dirt-seeker in all of us. Shifting the Paradigm: Stephanie’s Fueling Picks
Whether you’re training for your goal race or looking to break a food rut, Stephanie Howe shares some great food ideas and strategies to keep fueled up for more miles. PHOTO: Bruce Wodder / PhotoRun.net
STEPHANIE HOWE, MS
Chances are if you’ve been a human in the last five years, you’ve heard a thing or two about nutrition. Anything from how to supercharge your energy levels to what foods will melt fat off your butt. Yes, not all nutrition information we hear is based on sound science, but nonetheless it’s out there. While some of the new, crazy diet trends may confuse the average individual, most athletes are already pretty well educated in the nutrition department. We know what we need to eat to optimize performance. And if we don’t the answers, we know where to turn to find out. So then what’s the problem? Well, just like

Pre-run Emphasize foods high in carbohydrate, with minimal fiber to prevent stomach distress. Include moderate amounts of fat and protein for satiety. The pre-run meal should be somewhere between 300-500 calories (depending on the individual and event), consumed anywhere from 1-3 hours before. It’s important that the foods consumed before running are familiar. Try things out before race day or important runs to prevent any adverse effects (i.e. dashing for the

Things that come to mind are oatmeal, bagels, yogurt, pasta, bananas, turkey, etc. These are all great choices, but day after day of the same monotonous foods becomes oh-so-boring. So what else can you eat to mix it up, yet still meet your needs as an endurance athlete?

The goal of post-run fueling is to kick-start the recovery process. Ideally, a 4:1 ratio of carbohydrate to protein is recommended to best replenish glycogen stores and repair damaged muscle. Aim for 50-100g of carbohydrate with moderate amounts of protein within the first 30-45 minutes after exercise. For the post-run snack it’s more important to focus on the timing rather than the actual nutritional profile. After the first 30-45 min have passed, recovery is delayed and can be compromised. More Time on Your Feet When making the jump from the marathon to 50 miles, training volume is the first thing to consider. According to accomplished ultrarunner Ian Sharman, an online coach and

The Cornerstone of the Week
Coaching, “The mileage needed for training for a 50 miler isn’t necessarily more than for a marathon, but it’s harder to get away with minimal mileage (under 30-40 miles/week). The biggest change is incorporating more long runs and frequently running these on terrain that mimics the target race.” Since you’ll likely be on your feet more than twice as long as a marathon, you’ll need to up your weekly running volume a little. For example, if your weekly mileage for the marathon hovered around 30-40 miles per week, you should be fine to complete your first 50 by getting your weekly volume up to 50-60 miles per week. I hovered in the 40-50 miles per week range for my running volume while running 50K, 50 miles and 100 milers for years before my body adapted to handle bigger running mileage. I simply added in some extra volume on my mountain bike. Cycling can be a great cross-training tool for ultramarathons, especially if

Specific Training Road marathons are typically on very consistent, similar terrain. In contrast, 50-mile trail events can vary widely in the flora and fauna they take a runner through, as well as the running surface. According to Coach Sharman, “Unlike road marathons, 50-mile trail races vary a huge amount so all training needs to be tailored to the terrain, weather and specifics of the ultra. A mountainous, snowy 50 miler requires very different training to a sandy, desert race but even two seemingly similar 50 milers are unlikely to require exactly the same approach, so course knowledge and research about the race are extremely valuable.” So, do some research and plan accordingly. If it’s going to be a rolling singletrack course, make sure you spend some time on that terrain each week on your training runs. If it’s going to be mountainous, run hills. You want to give your running muscle groups a stimulus that will mimic what you’ll face on race day.

Destination: Boise, Idaho Urban Living Meets Outdoor Fun SHANNAH WERNER
Conde Naste Magazine recently named Boise, Idaho “West’s Best Secret.” With a booming culinary scene, a newly established Ale Trail, loads of trails, a ski area within 15 miles of the city, and the Boise River running through downtown, Boise will no longer be a secret destination for outdoor enthusiasts looking for culture after a day of playing. “Boise, ‘The City of Trees,’ is a rare blend of urban and outdoors; active and relaxing; family-friendly and unforgettable,” said Janelle Huelsman, for the Boise Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. “Boise residents and visitors love this city, with a river running through it, and take advantage of the easily accessible outdoors and its eclectic urban offerings.” To start with, there are 130 miles of trails just above the city in the Ridge to Rivers Trail system. Mountain bikers, cyclists, trail runners, hikers and horseback riders can get their fix only a short distance from town in the Foothills. In town, the 25-mile Greenbelt runs alongside the Boise River. Running events are a weekly occurrence and offer a variety of options for all abilities. The City of Trees Marathon (and Half Marathon) takes place in October (October 11, 2015) and sends participants on a scenic tour of Boise as the leaves are changing color. “The marathon and half marathon options both run adjacent to

parks and the river, take advantage of our greenbelt walking path, and are really a tour of Boise by foot,” said Jeff Ulmer, Race Director for the City of Trees Marathon Association. “There are breathtaking views of the fall colors from the top of the canopy and then from the shade below. The course is pretty flat, and is walker and spectator friendly.” In addition to the annual City of Trees Marathon, FitOne Boise puts on a weekend health festival. There is a 5K/10K/Half Marathon and full expo with interactive fitness activities and health screenings the weekend of September 24-26, 2015. “Produced and sponsored by not-for-profit St. Luke’s Health System, FitOne takes place every September in Boise, Idaho and the title beneficiary for the event is St. Luke’s Children’s, Idaho’s only children’s hospital,” said Heather Hill, Director of FitOne. “In 2014, with the support of participants and sponsors, $90,000 was donated to St. Luke’s Children’s.” FitOne also allows kids 12 and under to participate in the event for free with a paid adult, encouraging family fitness. Other running events that are popular in Boise include the Race to Robie Creek Half Marathon (February 2016), Fit For Life Half Marathon (July 11, 2015), Turkey Day 5K (November 26, 2015), and many more. There is no shortage of great cycling and mountain biking in and
calendars. Held on June 13, 2015, this race brings triathletes from all over the world and offers 30 qualifying spots for the 2015 Ironman 70.3 World Championships. Participants start with a 1.2-mile swim in the Lucky Peak Reservoir, a historic location along the Oregon Trail. The 56-mile bike course is a challenging ride over hilly terrain, finishing in town where the 2-loop half marathon course winds along the Boise Greenbelt. A river running through a city is more than just for looks, though. Fly fishing on the Boise River is a popular activity as well as surfing. “For a quick day surf, new improvements are being made to the Boise River Park, which features maneuverable wave shaper technology to create ideal conditions for kayaking, SUPing and tubing, all in the heart of the city,” said Huelsman. Hop in the car for a short 45-minute drive and some of the best whitewater rafting can be found on the Payette River. Various outfitters offer day trips along the rapids of the river for a quick escape from urban life. Equally important to a great outdoor scene is a culinary experience to refuel the body, and Boise is not lacking in good food or beverages. “The culinary scene is booming, which new locally-sourced food and beverage hot spots, unique sites and attractions,” Huelsman said. “The restaurants feature local farm produce and Northwestern fare, OPPOSITE PAGE, ABOVE LEFT: Boise’s Race to Robie Creek is known to be one of the toughest half marathons in the Northwest. Race to the Party SCOTT LOMMERS
Running is a wonderful sport. Yet it’s common to hear non-runners describe running as torture. Running is simple — if you have a decent pair of shoes, you’re basically ready to go. Still, some people think running is too simple, too monotonous. As a sport, running needs no specific arena or court. Running can be done absolutely anywhere. But clearly, many think running in the rain, the wind, the heat or the cold and snow is agony. Running is beneficial to good health; running drives physical, mental and emotional wellness. Even so, many non-runners dismiss the sport as “too difficult,” or worst of all, “boring.” They may have a point. Running is hard. It’s rewarding, sure, but it’s not easy. Easy is friends getting together, enjoying a cold beer on a warm day, dancing to live music, celebrating life by acknowledging achievements… Hold on, I think we’re on to something. Is it possible to run hard and have fun? It is. In fact, right here is a plan, a calendar, a guide for your entire running year. No doubt that some races, and certain times of the year, work better than others, but you can have your cake and eat it too. Well, maybe a beer instead of a cake…or maybe both. Running burns a lot of calories, after all.
A Year of Fun Running January — Running Clubs — A big YES Many running clubs and similar groups exist solely for the very purpose of drinking a beer after a run. The post-run carbo reload is a time-honored tradition amongst runners. Hash House Harrier

groups even list after run beer drinking as one of their very reasons for being. The best part? While running clubs are listed here, in the dreary month of January, as a lark, running clubs operate 52 weeks out of the year. And so do bars. It’s a win-win!
February — Valentine’s Day — Probably not Valentine’s Day runs seem to have the necessary ingredients for a decent post-race party: friends and significant others encouraged and available, champagne, beer and chocolates ready to be consumed, and the doldrums of winter inspiring everyone to find any reason to celebrate. And yet, the most conspicuous significant other day of the year, and the month of February in general, just don’t seem to inspire the party spirit in runners. Too cold? Maybe. Too casual? Perhaps. A fancy dinner and nice gift seem more acceptable to the masses. Too bad? Yes, it is. This sad month needs a big party like no other.
March — St Patrick’s Day — Do you need to ask? Anyone willing to drink green beer probably has no issue letting loose after a race. It’s no surprise that St Patrick’s Day is well known as a premier race party day. Long-time favorites like the St. Patrick’s Day Dash in Seattle and the Shamrock Run in Portland highlight hundreds of green-themed races, and post-race parties, across the northwest.
April — Marathons — Nope, too tired Even with most marathons adding shorter races like a half or 10k to the agenda, many marathon events just can’t muster up enough energy for a post-race party. Let’s face it, after a marathon, most
runners want to see nothing but their own couch. Maybe if someone invented a new type of party where everyone sat down the entire time, with food and drinks on rolling trays? Nah. Let’s leave the marathon where it belongs, in the hallowed ground of the serious runner.
May — Obstacle Runs — Made for the party Mud bogs, slides, tunnels, pools, electric shocks, fire, Viking helmets — basically this whole thing is a party designed by a twelve year-old boy. Of course, twelve year-olds grow up, and then they like to drink beer while wearing their Viking helmets. It’s a natural progression. These adventure and obstacle runs are all about celebrating the achievement while on the course, with each new challenge or barrier a cause for commemoration. But they’re also serious about celebrating your finish after the race, once you’ve made it through the literal fire! Finishing one of these races is like going to a 40 hour a week job to make it to the party on Friday night. Get to work.
June — Beer Mile — Experts only need apply This one is not for the inexperienced runner…or drinker. For quite some time, the Beer Mile was a rarely mentioned stunt attributed to college cross country teams and Australians. Lately however, the Beer Mile has been gushed about, and run seriously, by no less than Olympian Nick Symmonds. A few Beer Mile videos making the rounds on the web have over a million hits. Notable stuff. The actual beer mile itself is serious business: four laps around a track with a regulation can or bottle of beer consumed before each and every lap. Running, drinking, vomiting…sounds like a typical Friday night in college. Well, the world record beer mile is less than five minutes, so apparently a few runners are indeed taking it seriously. Try at your own risk.
July — Fourth of July — Absolutely It would probably be impossible to create a better day for a post-race party. Independence Day is a day off work for most, the weather is nearly always perfect and everyone needs something to do until it’s dark enough for fireworks! Many, many towns and cities hold 5k races on the fourth. Portland and Newport even hold half marathons: the Foot Traffic Flat Half and the Celebration Run, respectively. This Fourth, find a race, grab the sunblock and fill up the cooler.
August — Relays — Friends already invited It’s nearly impossible to not party at the end of a relay. You’re with five or even eleven of your friends, you’ve just spent hour after hour in a hot, stinky van, you’re extremely sleep-deprived — you need a release! The 24-hour relay may actually be the reason beer was invented. There are even rumors of some enterprising teams having pizza delivered to the finish line. Sharp thinking like that is clear proof of how running can increase intelligence.
September — Theme Runs — Tailor-made You likely already know the lineup: The Color Run, The Neon Run, Mustache Dache, The Blacklight Run, The Zombie Run, and The Electric Run, to name a few. They’re races in name — some even are brave enough to admit they’re 5K in length — but these runs are designed for the party. Here are runs you attend in packs: friends, family, everyone’s invited. No one cares how fast you run. Really, no one cares that much if you finish at all. Party during the race. Party after the race. It’s all good.
This sign was spotted on the side of the road several miles from the finish line of the Cascade Lakes Relay in 2014. Race promoters Scott and Carrie Douglass have put some serious thought into the experiential side of their event, including libations for the post-race celebration for all participants. October — Halloween — Good options abound Are you a bit introverted? Do you have trouble letting loose, even with your closest running buddies? Well, wearing a Cookie Monster costume is a known cure. And even the stiffest wallflower usually can enjoy the party when dressed as a pirate. Maybe it’s the eye patch. Halloween races are always more laid back than the normal 5k or 10k — perfect for a post-race party. Some races even start in the evening to get your party started right…and quickly.
November — Thanksgiving — Family time While the Thanksgiving holiday is usually a nice day for celebrations, and an absolutely huge day for racing, the post-race party options are basically nonexistent. Most runners are rushing for home to get the turkey in the oven the second after they cross the finish line. If honest, most runners would say the most important reason to run a Thanksgiving Day race would be to burn 500 calories so they can head home and gorge on turkey, stuffing and pumpkin pie. Is a Thanksgiving Day spent with family better than a nice post-race party? That’s your call — you know your family.
December — Holiday Runs — Brrrr Is it the icy cold weather? Yeah, it’s probably the icy cold weather. Even excusing the chill, holiday runs do have a special feel to them. They feel a touch more spiritual, a bit more charitable, and a smidge more family-oriented. Hey, don’t let me say you can’t party, but it just doesn’t usually seem as appropriate here. Save the party for another time. Drop off some extra groceries at a food bank or deliver a toy for a child in need. Provide a party for a stranger in December.
Be Safe Hey, you’re an adult. You want a beer or two after a tough race? Go ahead, enjoy. You deserve it. But please be smart. Never, ever, drink and drive. Plan ahead and find a designated driver, take a cab or hop on the bus. Make sure you’re around for the next race and after-party. Yes, running is hard. Yes, running can be serious. But it doesn’t always have to be that way. Find a few races where you can cut loose after, or even during, the race. Enjoy running! •
