Lux Magazine For this project, I created a fashion magazine which I named Lux magazine. I came up with the name Lux because it’s short for “luxury”. The purpose of the project was to create magazine spreads for 6 articles, all about ‘fashion’, but unique in content. For example, my 6 articles were “How Royal Women Have Shaped Fashion”, “The T-Shirt”, “The Autumn 2018 Trend Report”, “Beyonce In Her Own Words” (Cover & Featured article), and “Model With Down Syndrome Walks Runway”. Each article pertained to fashion, but I covered a wide range of types of fashion. Every image I used in my magazine was credited by the photographers and all my text was copy text from existing articles. I created the diamond logo because I wanted to express the notion that Lux is a high end fashion magazine and I thought the diamond accurately represented that. I used 3 typefaces for my magazine: Barkentina Test for the headers, Didot for all copy text and Zapfino for bits of the header that I wanted to emphasize. My primary color scheme is white and pink, which is seen in the cover, the logo, the page numbers, and in the featured article. Every other article had a color scheme that coordinated with the article itself.

INK.ED INK.ED For this project, I created a brand book, merchandise, stationary and social media for a branch of 826 National, in Detroit, Michigan. My brand identity was completely hypothetical, however. 826 National was founded in 2002 by Dave Eggers and Ninine Calegari. 826 stores provide students from underresourced communities access to high-quality, engaging and free writing, tutoring and publishing programs. Our goal is to provide students with the skills to succeed and inspiring, creative spaces to shine. Our storefronts remove the stigma associated with tutoring and it is a gateway for meeting families, teachers and volunteers. 826 National currently has locations in San Francisco, Los Angelos, Chicago, Detorit (INK. ED), Washington DC, New York City, and Boston. The mission

of 826 National is to encourage the exploration of endless possibilities through the power of writing. For my branch of 826 National in Detroit, I came up with the idea of “street art for the community”. I wanted to take away the negative stigma toward Detroit. I named my store INK. ED becase it uses a play on words. Since my store is all about street art, the “INK.” stands for the ink in spray-paint and for “incorporated”. The “ED” stands for education. Some of the merchandise found in my store are a “Graffiti your Pet” can, hats, T-shirts, stamps and much more. With the fun and kid-friendly products in my store, I envision a community that can come together in a safe, happy environment, to enjoy being with one another and engaging in art.

National Geographic For this project, I used 3 of my “Wildlife” Scratchboards and implemented them into hypothetical National Geographic Magazine covers. For this hypothetical “limited time” collection, I wanted to emphasize wildlife awareness by using three different ‘big cats’: a panther, lion, and cheetah. Each magazine is slightly different, in that the articles are more specific to the animal featured on the cover.

Mystic Enterprises For this project, I created a hypothetical “Time Travel” agency, which I named Mystic Enterprises. I created the name, logo, brochure, tickets, merchandise and an app. In this scenario, Mystic Enterprises was traveling back in time to Pompeii, to 79 Ad, before Mt. Vesuvius errupted. The brochure features a brief history of Pompeii, information

about time travel, about teleportation, the itinerary, hotel information, and information about the two airports that guests will be teleporting out of. The app consists of a more detailed description about the company, time travel, teleportation and more. It’s also a way to access your tickets online, even though guests will receive a printed version as well. Upon arrival at the airport, guests will receive a complimentary

Mystic Enterprises draw string bag, filled with a custom waterbottle, T-shirt, their tickets and the brochure. I chose the name Mystic Enterprises for my time travel agency because it sounds mysterious and technical, yet professional. In this hypothetical situation, time travel would be something that is new, exciting, and highly technical. The three rings around the logo represent the vortex in

which the teleportation machines would travel through. The color scheme of light blue, black and white gives my brand an overall look, feel and vibe of professionalism and technological advancement. I used two typefaces: “Bureau Grot” for everything except the logo and “ITC Anna STD” for the logo.

Alayne White Spa For this project, I created a hypothetical rebrand for a local spa in Bristol, Rhode Island, called the Alayne White Spa. I met with Alayne to learn more about her and her company. Based on our discussion I decided to re-vamp her original look and feel. Her logo had been an emoji-like logo with a lotus flower. I liked the concept of the lotus flower because it symbolizes purity. I thought that was a good representation for a spa because of their relaxing nature. I chose the lavendar colors because they also represent a calming vibe. I decided to keep the name of her spa as is, but rather focus on the new color, typeface, and flower. The typeface I used for all body text was “Baketina Test” and the headers were in “October Twilight”. I created a logo, brandbook, posters, social media, a store front sign, T-shirts, mugs and much more. Even though this rebrand was hypothetical, I was able to learn a lot as a designer about the process of creating a new identity for a company.

Guitar Center For this project, I created a hypothertical promotion for Guitar Center. I used my “Guitar” painting and placed it onto a guitar case, part of a guitar and a pick. The promotion would be available from January 1 2019 to the last day in April. All orders placed before March 15, 2019 would receive an additional 25% off the entire set. The set would be part of an ‘ongoing’ promotion for beginners. The set would include the custom guitar, case and a pack of 10 picks. The price of the set is on the pricier side because anyone who purchases this set would also receive 5 lessons by professionals at any Guitar Center. I wanted to create a custom guitar set based off of my original painting because I thought it would be a unique approach to implementing my studio art with graphic design.

AIGA Brochure For this project, I hypothetically created a brochure for the 2019 AIGA Design Conference, which is being held in Pasadena, California. Because the location of the conference is in a tropical setting, I wanted to make the theme of my brochure fit that vibe. I used a peachy-pink, purple and tangerine-orange to represent that look and feel. The brochure is a unique fold, which when all folded, forms a triangle. I wanted the brochure to be something that could fit in one’s pocket, but could still easily be opened up and read. The brochure features the conference dates, a description of the chair, two of the main speakers, ticket information, a brief overview of the mornings, afternoons and the design fair, and a schedule of events for each day. I used the typeface “Antique Olive STD throughout the whole brochure, varying on the weights depending on text significance.

All About Typography For these series of projects, I created images completely made out of words (with the exception of the green backgroundd on the selfie). I wanted to challenge myself by creating portraits and layouts using only words instead of traditional drawings/vectors The Rayve The project on the top is of the band called “The Rayve”. I created a poster for them using one of their photoshoot images. Each member in the band is created out of type. The unique part about each member is that the type is specific to them, in that words used describe their personalities, or feature their names. The background consists of the lyrics from some of their songs. Christmas Card The selfie is of my boyfriend and I. I created this piece as a Christmas card. I wanted to advance my knowledge on creating images in type by creating a close up piece. Again, the words used in this piece represented things that either described myself or my boyfriend. Cooper Type The third piece is of my dog, Cooper. This piece is a bit different than the other two because i used more overlay text. I first created Cooper in a series of small texts, matching the color of his fur. I then added text on top, to represent the “flowy-ness” of his fur. Once again, the words used describe his playful, energetic and cute personality and looks.

Design Center I work at the Design Center on my campus, which is a department of Student Programs & Leadership. As part of my work duties, I create posters, flyers, banners, and logos for clubs and organizations on campus. Recently, I’ve been promoted to a leadership position in which, along with completing design projects, I oversee all work gets done on time by other designers, maintain stationary, and train new employees. I now work on larger projects, such as the 2019 Student Orientation News Letter (pictured below) and the 2019 Orientation Guide Books. To the right, is a logo I made for Casino Night, here on my campus. Working in the Design Center exposes me to client/designer relationships, as well as working hands on with co-workers and supervisors to ensure all work gets completed on time.

MISS NEWBEDFORD OUTSTANDING TEEN 2018 LOGO

I created the logo for the 2018 Miss New Bedford Outstanding Teen, Tori Kalisz. Her platform was “Rise Up! You’re Stronger Than You Think”. I wanted to create a logo that represented every stuggle she, as well as countless others, face from time to time. Her message was that no matter what life brings, there will always be a way to pick yourself up and stay strong. The main logo is the color version (right), which uses pink and purple to represent her personality. The pageant woman is wearing a beautiful gown and crown, yet shows that she is still strong and more than just a pretty face. Tori used the logo in her social media, on t-shirts, posters and flyers. Throughout her reign as titleholder, she religiously used the logo along with the powerful message it brought.

Left of Love Album Cover

I created an album cover for the Band Left of Love. Their album name is “Lost and Found”. They wanted to achieve a vibe of old music being lost and found again. For the album art, I used an old record player hidden by the shadow and as the light streams through the door, the guitar is being found. The band has 5 songs in their EP: “Lost and Found” “Wait to Fall”, “Hell No”, “Up, Up, Down”, and “Take It All Away”. Rachael’s Portfolio xx
