A brief look into my undergraduate thesis that deals with creating spaces of leisure for the marginalized communities of the city of Mangalore, Karnatakata, India.

THESIS

The aim of the thesis is to understand the usage of the existing public amenities, why specific segments of society are excluded from using these spaces and make them more accessible.

UNDERGRADUATE THESIS REIMAGINING SPACES OF LEISURE FOR THE MARGINALIZEDCOMMUNITIESSEMESTER09

42 Due to a lack of private resources, women, youth, and kids rely primarily on public spaces to make a living and fulfil their leisure needs. These should be the precise reasons why public spaces should be designed in consultation with them.

LEISURE FROM OBLIGATORY WORK WORK AS A SOURCE OF LEISURE RELIGIOUS ACTIVITIES

Each part of Mangalore city like Bunder, Car street, Balmatta, Hampankatta, Kadri, Urwa developed its own strength. All these areas performed more than one function at the same time. Source: Snazzy maps Source: Snazzy maps

The following demonstrates that individuals prefer spending time outside with people they know whenever they have the opportunity, but the major reason they do not is due to a lack of appropriate venues that cater to their demands.

43 UNDERSTANDING LEISURE AND THE TYPES

Mangalore is a conglomeration of unique cultures that have developed through the ages, some disparate and some interconnected.

LEISURE IN MANGALORE

MAP SHOWING PLACES OF SHOPPING MAP SHOWING RELIGIOUS PLACES

This is the leisure that women manage to extract from ‘obligatory’ activities — such as housework, shopping, and personal hygiene. Work outside the home, provides a kind of escape from the monotony and restrictions of domestic life when it is not backbreaking. Religious activities occupy a large portion of people’s spare time across the world.Women are more likely to engage in religious activities as a kind of leisure.

The central market area is mainly a mixture of street vendors and commercial complexes. The vendors mainly comprise of vegetables and fruits. They generally occupy the inner market streets. The street vendors are the ones that give character to the market and becomes a sight of attraction and making it a truly Indian street.

WALKTHROUGH OF THE MARKET

BUS STOPS

An attempt to make the market a place which is not used only for shopping but even as a place where people gather even to relax and spend their free time.

The fundamental purpose of this thesis was to look at the relationship between built form and gender relationships. The survey clearly proved that men and women had significantly diverse perspectives on the urban environment. Leisure activities are one approach to break down social barriers and get people to spend time together, and they also provide a healthy and safe atmosphere for users. The physical quality of the visual city will increase as a consequence of society being trained to learn and share, as well as to respect the rights of other users in the city, because there will be no annexation of space.

CONCLUSION

Most of the activities of leisure in the market are not accessible to the major part of the population, this is an attempt at creating multifunctional spaces that cater to the needs of all the people on site.

This thesis was an attempt to create public places that meet the requirements of individuals from all walks of life, regardless of their social origins. The whole concept is around making tiny adjustments to the market’s design that may go a long way toward helping people, particularly women and adolescents, feel comfortable and welcome in the area. According to this viewpoint, a high-quality public space is certainly an area brimming with a varied spectrum of public life. Meanwhile, a lively public area with a lively public life is a desirable location for people and municipal identity.

Another significant change in the city is the increase in the number of automobiles. Traffic congestion and auto parking are both becoming heated topics. Land that was originally utilised for public space has been converted to a transit or parking lot, displacing inhabitants from the public sphere. As a result, the city centre is becoming lifeless, boring, and dead, raising the potential of crime.
