Families And The Law – Know Your Rights
traders in the UK, France, Australia and New Zealand.
Families Pennines asked local legal experts Wilkinson Woodward for an update on the latest in family law. Family law specialist Clive Masters explains the new Child Arrangement Orders.
Offering the opportunity to join the network with a brand new Starter Kit or Business Pack, new traders receive a comprehensive email training course and support from a team of experienced Independent Phoenix Traders.
Many years ago, following divorce or separation, if a child was to live with one parent, courts would give that parent custody and the other parent would have access to the child.
With an amazing range of everyday cards and stationery plus Charity Christmas cards, advent calendars and decorative items this is a great time to join – especially for those who’ve got little ones starting nursery or ‘big school’ this autumn or who might want to treat their families.
In 1989 the Children Act was introduced and ‘custody’ became ‘residence’ and ‘access’ became ‘contact’. Despite the legal change in these terms, for the past 25 years most people still referred to custody or access.
For more information talk to your current Phoenix Trader or see www.rachelscardshop.co.uk, email rachelscardshop@gmail.com or call 07976621496 to contact Senior Executive Trader (i.d.7093) Rachel Bentley.
In April this year, the Government introduced a new Act stopping the use of those terms and replacing them with ‘Child Arrangement Orders’, under which a child lives with a parent and spends time with their other parent.
Up, up and away to brand new store for Cardelium
More important than the change of name, the Act is intended to streamline the court system, preventing family disputes dragging on unnecessarily. There is now one court - the Family Court - and cases are set a strict timescale from start to finish. Importantly, it is now mandatory that separating parents try mediation to resolve their dispute before going to court. It is hoped this will reduce the bitterness that court proceedings can create. More information is available from the Gov.uk website. Clive Masters is a family law practitioner and specialises in childrenrelated matters. He is based at Wilkinson Woodward’s offices on Fountain Street in Halifax. Wilkinson Woodward also has offices in Brighouse and Huddersfield. Open Days and Back to School If you’re dreading the return to school....
The ‘Open Day’ Season
– or your children are – Steve Uttley, of NumberWorks’nWords, Huddersfield, has some tips to make this challenging time of the year less stressful. 1. Re-establish the school year routine. Return your family to set meal and bed times at least a few days ahead of term.
Whilst your children are settling back into their school or nursery after the long summer break, you may well be looking ahead to their future schooling. This is a really popular time for primary and secondary schools to open their doors to prospective pupils and their families.
2. Ensure there’s a suitable place (quiet and tidy) for homework - keep organised to minimise time-wasting. 3. Talk to your children about their goals for the term - academic (e.g. B or higher in every test) or behavioural (hand in all homework on time).
Local authority schools, foundation or free schools, grammar schools, faith schools and academies may have their own admission criteria. For the Independent School sector most will offer a place following an entrance exam and will have other application criteria and closing dates specific to them. Primary and secondary school admissions will differ between each borough and local authority websites are a great place look for open events or links to individual schools and what the local requirements for application will be including the closing dates for applications. Why not check out these websites to start with: • www.kirklees.gov.uk – with calendar of secondary open evenings • www.calderdale.gov.uk – with calendar of secondary open evenings • www.oldham.gov.uk
4. Establish a relationship with your child’s teachers. Inform them of your child’s goals and discuss any issues so they can be addressed before they turn into problems. 5. Prepare a timetable for their week, let them know who is picking them up each day, and even tell them what is expected of them in the morning to get ready for school. 6. Holidays finish the day before school starts. Encourage them from Day 1 to stick to their schedule and complete all of their work. 7. Discuss what you expect with homework this year BEFORE they get any. Be there for them when they need help with homework. If you require expert help to make the return to school a better experience for both you and your child, give NumberWorks’nWords, Huddersfield, a call. They offer specialist, individualised maths, English and 11+ tuition to school -aged students. For a free assessment and introductory lesson call Steve on 01484 487911

Clubs & Classes Why it’s important for children to do out of school activities... By Susan Tomlinson
There are clubs for almost anything you can imagine. Archery, chess, horse riding, computer clubs, film making and even circus skills are all proving popular alongside the more traditional arts and crafts, swimming, tennis and martial arts. There are activities for nature lovers run by the RSPB and the Woodland Trust. The best thing is they’re brilliant for all sorts of reasons – not just learning a new skill. After school clubs allow children to let off steam outside the classroom and an alternative to the three R’s can be hugely rewarding. Clinical psychologist Dr Julie Fraser, says, “Not everyone is brilliant at academic subjects and it’s a chance for children to shine outside the classroom.” Research demonstrates that academic grades can improve when children participate in extra-curricular activities. A 2005 US study* showed that children who attended clubs performed much better in
maths and verbal reasoning tests than those who didn’t. They can develop important life skills too. “They’re brilliant at developing social skills, dealing with new environments, talking to different adults and mixing with other children,” says Dr Fraser. “Learning a new skill can affect what happens in school – children feel more confident and able to try new tasks.” Team sports like football, rugby and netball are brilliant for keeping children active and helping them learn team work - appreciating what’s good for the whole team, rather than just thinking of themselves. Competitive sports assist in learning difficult life lessons like being a gracious winner - and loser. But for team building clubs with a less competitive edge, you could consider the Scouting or Guiding movement. Learning a musical instrument is helpful for discovering the art of practice, patience and persistence. Drama clubs are fantastic for shy children who learn to find their voice singing and acting alongside others, whilst ballet and dance classes are great

for children to learn discipline and selfexpression. There’s so many to choose from, it’s tempting to try them all! It’s also important not to overburden children with too many activities. Frantically driving from one after school club to the next seems to be missing the point. New skills, team work and confidence building aside, the most important thing to think about when deciding which club to choose is surely the fun factor. After that, the trick is to stay involved. “Talk with the teacher, find out how they work and show an interest in the class,” says Dr Fraser, “That way you can be sure your child really is enjoying the club, and you will begin to watch them flourish and grow.” Visit our hugely popular online directory at www.familiespennines.co.uk/directory where we are building a listing of local Clubs and Classes.
