Facilities for families considered at Cromwell Bottom Nature Reserve

Visitors to the Cromwell Bottom Nature Reserve near Brighouse could see some big changes take place in the area, as Calderdale Council’s Cabinet approved a proposal to consult on ideas for the Cromwell Bottom area, and agreed to involve local people and interested groups in designing a master plan for the site. Much of the 100 acre site comprising the Cromwell Bottom Nature Reserve and a former landfill facility is owned by Calderdale Council. The nature reserve is home to a range of important wildlife habitats, some of which are found nowhere else in the borough. Although it currently has minimal facilities, the site is easily accessed by car or bus from the nearby main road. The area offers great potential for enhancement. The proposed plan could potentially provide residents and visitors in the

Irritable Bowel Syndrome, not ‘just’ IBS? What are your most treasured childhood memories? The majority may well be based outdoors – building dens, climbing trees, rock-pooling. Today things are different and children are spending increasing amounts of time indoors.

The IBS Network, the UK charity for people diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), is raising awareness of this often disregarded illness.

Adventure, excitement and the great outdoors are important for all young people. The outdoors is a great place for children to practice and master physical and motor skills and develop a healthy, active lifestyle.

This illness, with symptoms of abdominal discomfort, diarrhoea or constipation or an alternating pattern of both, is diagnosed in 6% of middle school children, 14% in teenagers and 15% of adults. A triggering life event, either emotion or infection is identified in about 80% of children with IBS.

Outdoor activities can also help your family develop a range of skills together. Team working, communication and self-confidence can all be reinforced through outdoor adventure and play and what’s more, it helps your family to keep fit and have fun!

IBS is said to be second only to colds and flu as reasons for absenteeism from school and affects schooling and quality of life. IBS can run in families and although there is no cure, treating with a combination of medications, managing life stresses, diet and lifestyle can give effective symptom control.

Did you know that the Girl Guiding movement has properties available to visit or stay? For a day of activity to remember visit Waddow Hall Activity Centre in the Ribble Valley – you can even hold a birthday party there! 01200 423186, waddow@ girlguiding.org.uk, www.waddow.org.uk.

The campaign to raise awareness of the affect IBS has on patients and carers can be found at www.change.org/p/allpolitical-parties-and-the-national-medical-director-recogniseit-s-not-just-irritable-bowel-syndrome-ibs information about IBS and treatments can be found at www.theibsnetwork.org/ the-self-care-plan/.

New Huddersfield Leisure mmer Centre set to open early su

Walk to School Week

Huddersfield Leisure Centre is on target to open to the public in summer 2015.

Part of National Walking Month, this year’s Walk to School Week (18-22 May) will involve nearly a million schoolchildren, teachers and parents.

The new centre will include a 25-metre swimming pool, a teaching pool, two sports halls, climbing, squash and martial arts facilities, a large fitness suite, plus a café and children’s area. The new centre will also include a fabulous Splash Park-style family leisure water facility, flume, “sidewinder” and several more water features. The new Huddersfield Leisure Centre is set to become the biggest and best leisure centre in the district and will be a great asset for local people, helping them to improve their health and wellbeing, as well as attracting visitors to the town. To find out more about the fantastic new leisure centre visit www.kirklees.gov.uk/huddersfieldleisurecentre.

Share-A-Story May heralds National Share-A-Story Month, celebrating the power of storytelling. Run by the Federation of Children’s Book Groups, it aims to bring children and stories together. This year the theme is Dragons looking at Chinese, Welsh and Viking dragons in stories

The new leisure centre will replace the existing Huddersfield Sports Centre in Southgate which is coming to the end of its life. It will be owned by the council and managed by Kirklees Active Leisure.

Each day looks at on one of the health reasons why walking is a great idea – and walking to school can save up to £400 a year too! For grown-ups (no, we can’t get out of it!) EDUCATION AND CHILDCARE

NumberWorks’nWords 5 top things to remember when taking SATs SATs week will soon be upon us and the thought can turn sensible people into jellies – and that’s just the parents! So here are 5 top tips from Steve Uttley of NumberWorks’nWords Huddersfield, to help your child (and you) cope with the coming weeks.

M&S

1 Create a revision schedule and stick to it. Make sure your schedule includes some leisure time as well. Do questions from past papers – there are only so many questions that they can ask about fractions or pronouns!

Holiday childcare ‘nightmare’ sorted by H&H Nannies With yet another set of school holidays in May and the long summer holidays looming, wouldn’t it be great to have the peace of mind of having the kids’ childcare arrangements organised? How about a school holiday nanny or Mother’s Help? It might just be a cheaper alternative to holiday clubs especially if you have two or more children. And if you are going away, have you ever considered taking a nanny on holiday with you? Your nanny will take care of the children allowing you the time to relax throughout the day – and help you make the most of your evenings too.

2 Get enough sleep during SATs week and eat a good breakfast each morning.

For more information about the possibilities, contact Rachel Bradley, H&H Nannies, 07557 787119, www.huddersfieldandholmfirthnannies. co.uk

3 Ask teachers or tutors for help with any tricky topics in good time before the SATs. 4 Don’t try to do too much work each day. If you overdo it you won’t take in the facts you’re revising. 5 Be sure to show all your working out and plans and check all your answers are sensible. Overall, remember, SATs are a way of showing what you know – you can’t fail! For information about tuition to help your child get on top of English and maths call Steve on 01484 487911

Welcome to our Parties Pull-Out. We’ve included top tips from Yorkshire parent and journalist, Sarah Butters, as well as a directory of local providers – from venues to activity providers, party bags to the icing on the cake – literally! And the bonus is that you can keep this handy guide once you’ve finished with our mag so you have everything at your fingertips when it is your turn to entertain your own little party monsters. Keep an eye on www.familiespennines.co.uk for our Local Party Providers directory too. www.familiespennines.co.uk

You’ve saved on hiring a venue or entertainer so really do get the professionals in to provide cake, party bags, themed invites and partyware – see our listings for inspiration. Let’s face it. They shouldn’t be called sleepovers. They should be called stay awake overs because you will sleep about as well as a meerkat balanced on a branch and the kids won’t sleep at all. However if you follow a few basic rules, you may survive. Keep the numbers low. As far as sleepovers go, more is definitely not merrier but it is noisier. Keep them busy – I’ve heard tales of parents setting up night time obstacle courses to exhaust their pint sized house guests. Remove electrical devices at a reasonable hour and make sure you have a note of all parental contacts. As sure as night follows day someone will get homesick at about midnight and infect everyone. For those who do survive the overnight stay, arrange for an early collection. It gives you the day to remove Haribo from your beige carpet, and you’ll only have your own sleep deprived, sugar shocked child to deal with.

SWIMMING POOLS – AND BALL POOLS! Most mums are reluctant to strip off to a swimsuit when the sun is shining and the sangria’s flowing. So the thought of doing it in front of your school gate ‘chums’ while

Many such pools have a low rate room for hire so you can follow the wet fun with a party tea provided by you or your own caterer. delicious candy cones, tubs and sweetie trees, and gorgeous birthday presents gift wrapped for you – plus everything else in between. The area’s best-kept secret, the team at Party Bag Kids help parents make their children smile.

Party Problems SOLVED

Yes, some parents feel it’s acceptable to bring along siblings uninvited and presume they are welcome. “They won’t eat, you won’t even know they’re here,” cry the parents as they sprint out of the door, while said siblings pilfer from the party bags. Very often entertainers insist on a maximum number and siblings can tip them over the limit – and tip you over the edge. Make the sibling rule clear: ‘Sorry, no room for siblings!’ means there’s no question.

CAN YOU... exclude individual children? Stick to one of 3 party invite rules: 1 Invite the whole class – perfect for Reception age children 2 Invite all the girls OR all the boys – popular as children head into KS2 and the opposite sex become toxic 3 Invite a few close friends – great for your budget or as your child gets to the end of primary school. There are exceptions! You’ve grounds to exclude the classroom bully – it’s YOUR child’s special day and they’re entitled to enjoy it without fear. For children needing extra supervision, it’s best to ask the parents of that child to stick around to offer a helping hand.

CAN YOU…..fine a parent for a ‘no show’? The tale of the mum who billed a parent after they failed to show up to her son’s skiing party certainly made party no shows THE talk of the playground. In a world of text messages and emails, a no warning no show is simply unacceptable. Make a point of asking what happened to the no show when you next bump into the parent. In my experience you maximise the embarrassment the more parents there are to witness it – without needing to invoice!

Let’s Celebrate the Dads in

Dads are often overlooked, especially in today’s busy world (and even more so if there are young children around). Father’s Day is the perfect opportunity to make him feel special and wanted. This year it is Father’s Day on Sunday 21 June, so why not put your thinking cap on early and come up with something special for your Dad? Or if you’re a Dad, you could start dropping hints for your partner and children to treat you! The celebration was introduced in the United States in the early 20th century to honour fathers and father figures, although some scholars believe that Father’s Day is actually much older, and that the custom of celebrating fathers on a special day has been around for nearly 4000 years. Today, it is becoming more and more popular and there are loads of fantastic ways of celebrating it. There are some wonderful and unusual gifts out there. But it doesn’t have to be a gift – a day out with the people nearest and dearest to Dad can hit the spot perfectly. Many National Trust properties, museums, stately homes, farm parks and even theme parks hold special Father’s Day events with loads of great activities for Dads and their families – see our What’s On listings over the next few pages and all over the UK online too via familiespennines.co.uk/whatson. (Dads may even go free on Father’s Day so it’s definitely worth doing your research!) Start off the day giving Dad a lie-in and breakfast in bed, followed by indulging him with some of his favourite homecooked treats. Jamie Oliver has some fantastic Father’s Day recipes on his website, including BBQ Beef Short Ribs and his Insanity Burger. The BBC website also has a great selection of treats perfect for Father’s Day, including Spicy Lamb Meatballs and a pecan pie. Even if you’re not the world’s best cook, Dad will certainly appreciate it!
