KIRKLEES MUMS GIVE THEIR BABIES THE BEST POSSIBLE START A network of local mums in Kirklees are set to help new mums with information about feeding their babies.

The network is organised by Locala which, along with trained volunteer breastfeeding peer supporters, runs Baby Bistros and Baby Cafes throughout Kirklees. In the UK, the move towards the new curriculum and introduction of new assessments such as the the Baseline Assessment tests, Phonics Screening check, and KS2 SATS including the new SPAG test, is disturbing many parents, who are concerned that too much emphasis is being placed on teaching children to pass tests. So what exactly are these tests? Here is an extract from our website – for the full article see www.familiespennines.co.uk/educationchildcare. The Baseline Test 1:1 formal test that will take place within a few weeks of a child starting school. It focusses on a child’s literacy and numeracy to generate a ‘baseline’ against which to measure progress to Key Stage One and Two. The Phonics Screening Check Taken by pupils in Year 1, this test is designed to confirm whether pupils have learnt phonic decoding to an appropriate standard. It will identify pupils who need extra help to improve their decoding skills. KS2 SATS National Curriculum tests which are taken by pupils at age 11 at the end of Key Stage 2. Tests include: The SPAG Test An English grammar, punctuation and spelling test which assesses a child’s English skills in four key areas: spelling, punctuation, grammar, and vocabulary.

Memorial library is pinnacle of a summer of investment at Hipperholme Grammar School Hipperholme Grammar School has opened a brand new library named after one of its longest serving teachers who passed away earlier this year. The Petford Library – commemorating former History teacher Alan Petford – will serve as a lasting reminder of the former teacher’s dedication to the school, both in the classroom and as a long-standing Governor. Following the £12,000 investment from the school, the former staff meeting room has been turned into a modern library, complete with an array of fiction and non-fiction books. Twelve tablet computers have also been installed to aid student research, following a donation of over £2,000 from the school’s Parent Teacher Association. A series of projects took place over the summer holidays to improve facilities throughout the school, with more than £72,000 invested across various projects including upgrading kitchen and catering facilities and new, energy efficient boilers. The Year 7 Entrance Examination for 2016 is on Saturday 21st November, 8.30am-12pm. Helping dyslexic children with spelling, by Francine Garnier of Brighouse Dyslexia Centre Dyslexic pupils often have difficulties with phonological awareness – the ability to hear and identify sounds in words – which means they may have problems learning to spell. English words can sound the same but be spelt differently, such as ‘their’ and ‘there’, or they are not always written as they sound, for example, ‘have’ has a silent e on the end. Vowels represent sounds both on their own, as in ‘cat’, or blended together, such as in ‘through’. This can be very confusing for dyslexic people and create insecurity when learning to spell. Help your child identify parts of words you can spell sound by sound and the tricky parts you need to memorise. For example, to spell the word ‘light’ you need to remember there is a ‘gh’ in it. MANTIS and CVBBA – working together to empower children against physical attack MANTIS – (Manage Any Nasty Trouble In Society) and Colne Valley Black Belt Academy are focused on improving the lives of children and have launched a brand new 8 week ‘Children’s Protector’ Programme. In a new partnership with the Anti-Bullying Alliance (ABA), hosted by the National Children’s Bureau (NCB), MANTIS is a new company which has developed simple, proven initiatives which will help children and young people keep safe and build confidence. The course offers 8 steps to empower children and young people in the face of a physical attack or an abduction attempt, teaching kids how to release themselves from a grab, whatever the size of the opponent. Taught over the course of 8 weeks, with an interactive console/DVD game to play at home to help to instil the techniques, it’s simple, accessible to all, and highly effective. Lauren Seager-Smith, National Coordinator of the Anti-Bullying Alliance, says, “We want children to live happy, fulfilled lives without fear of bullying. The ‘Children’s Protector’ is a powerful tool to empower children in the face of a physical attack.
