IN NEW YORK TODAY, ISLANDER BRETT LINDROS RETIRED FROM THE NHL. LINDROS, THE YOUNGER BROTHER OF PHILADELPHIA FLYER ERIC LINDROS, WAS FORCED TO RETIRE AFTER SUFFERING THROUGH TWO CONCUSSION-PLAGUED SEASONS.
2. CLIP
IT WAS A TOUGH DECISION. I TALKED TO A FEW DOCTORS, AND THEY BASICALLY TOLD ME THAT IF I DIDN’T RETIRE, I HAD A PRETTY GOOD CHANCE OF GETTING BRAIN DAMAGE DOWN THE ROAD. I REALLY DIDN’T HAVE A CHOICE IN THE MATTER. I MEAN, THERE WERE TIMES WHEN I WAS PLAYING THAT I DIDN’T REMEMBER A SHIFT AFTER COMING BACK TO THE BENCH.
3. NARRATOR
In 1994, former NHL hockey player Brett Lindros was drafted ninth overall by the New York Islanders. Two years later, on May 2, 1996, he retired from professional hockey at age twenty. Multiple concussions and post-concussion symptoms, including blurred vision, amnesia, impaired balance, nausea, lack of coordination and persistent headaches plagued Lindros prior to his retirement, and were important factors to his decision.

AFTER I RETIRED, I WENT OUT TO CALIFORNIA AND TOOK SOME COLLEGE COURSES IN SANTA MONICA. IT WAS A FUN TIME, DEFINITELY AN EXPERIENCE. IT’S GREAT OUT THERE. OVERALL, I WAS LOOKING TO GET INTO BROADCASTING. YOU KNOW, TO STILL BE A PART OF HOCKEY IN SOME WAY, EVEN IF IT WASN’T ON THE ICE.

WHEN I FIRST STARTED OUT, I WAS REALLY NERVOUS. OK, I WAS TERRIFIED. BUT I’D PLAYED WITH, OR AGAINST, OR HAD SOMEHOW COME INTO CONTACT WITH ALL THE GUYS I TALKED TO, SO IT WASN’T LIKE I WAS GOING IN THERE COLD. EVERYONE WAS REALLY GREAT AND OPEN TO THE EXPERIENCE, AND I THINK THAT HELPED THE NERVOUSNESS A LOT. IT HELPED PUT ME AT EASE.

Life With Brett Rachel Brethauer/005 5’30” Williams 10/02/99 p. 6 of 8
1. NARRATOR:
Since his retirement, Brett and his older brother, Eric, have become active spokesmen about concussions in sport, especially hockey. They are working to prevent all hockey players from suffering through Brett’s experience, and to spread concussion awareness to the general public. The Lindros brothers are also working with Bauer, a hockey equipment manufacturer, to make more protective hockey helmets.
2. CLIP
WORKING WITH THE OBIA HAS BEEN GREAT. I THINK IT’S IMPORTANT FOR ME TO GET OUT THERE AND TELL PEOPLE THAT BEING THE TOUGH GUY IN HOCKEY ISN’T ALWAYS THE BEST THING. I WENT OUT THERE AND I WANTED TO BE THE TOUGH ONE, AND NOW I’M HERE. I CAN’T PLAY ANYMORE. AND I THINK THAT THE KIDS WHO ARE COMING UP THROUGH MINOR AND JUNIOR HOCKEY NEED TO SEE THAT IF YOU’RE NOT CAREFUL, YOU CAN REALLY GET HURT. IT’S COMING MORE INTO THE OPEN NOW, ESPECIALLY AFTER LAST SEASON IN THE NHL, BUT, I HOPE THAT MY WORK WITH THE OBIA IS HELPING SOMEHOW. PEOPLE HAVE TO REALIZE HOW SERIOUS A CONCUSSION CAN BE. WITH EACH SUCCESSIVE ONE, THE DAMAGE STARTS TO ADD UP AND NOT CORRECT ITSELF. ONE DAY YOU CAN WAKE
UP AND NOT REALLY BE YOURSELF ANYMORE. Life With Brett Rachel Brethauer/005 5’30” Williams 10/02/99 p. 7 of 8
1. NARRATOR
In the nearly three years since his retirement, Brett Lindros has come into his own. He has accepted his forced retirement and embarked on a promising broadcasting career. He promotes safety in hockey, and educates people about the dangers of concussion. Brett is still actively involved in the hockey world, working with NHL players every day. Brett clearly proves that there is life after hockey.

SURE, I’D LIKE TO BE OUT THERE, AND IT WOULD HAVE BEEN GREAT TO WIN A CUP—IT’S EVERY KID’S DREAM TO BE IN THE NHL—BUT I’M HAPPY DOING WHAT I DO. I STILL FEEL CONNECTED TO HOCKEY, AND THAT’S THE MAIN THING. TO BE AROUND THE GAME I LOVE.
