SwedeFest

Rebor n

On Oct. 10, Swede Fest came back seemingly from the dead, reborn into a new location. Held at The Palm Beaches Theatre in Plaza del Mar in Manalapan, FL, the festival brought in plenty of films that spoofed on other films. There was a swede on "Frozen," one on "Cars" and another on "Sound of Music" by kids, among others. Adults created films like one about "Aliens" and "Not So Fast & Furious." But the winner was "Batman meets The Goonies," directed by Jason Galotti. More about Swede Fest at www.swedefestpalmbeach.com.

and a good director has to be able to be relaxed enough to go with the flow on set.

Document ary

A Tal k w i t h ... Di r ect or Bobby Rot h By Rachel Gal vin Director Bobby Roth was working ?on the cutting room floor? for the TV show ?The Player? when Independent Streak caught up with him. Unfortunately, he was working on editing what was originally supposed to be the 9th episode but became the final episode after receiving news the production had been canceled. They found out while in the middle of a night shoot, but Roth says the cast was completely professional and, despite finding out they had just lost their jobs, they did their scene with class. 5 Changes like this happen all the time in the film world

But, in order to be in the moment and present with actors and crew, a director needs to prepare ? something Roth talks about extensively in his documentary series ?A Director Prepares.? The film, also created by his son Nick, showcases Roth but also has interviews with 57 people, just some that he has worked with through the years ? He intersperses clips from movies and TV shows as well. Six episodes of the 10-episode documentary series will be shown at part of the Ft. Lauderdale International Film Festival Nov. 14 at Cinema Paradiso in Ft. Lauderdale, FL starting at 10 a.m. and running until 2:45 p.m. It is only $15 for non-FLIFF members, $12 for seniors and $10 for members. The price includes breakfast and pizza lunch! For tickets, visit www.fliff.com. Roth shows his documentary all over the world and has so for the last seven years. When asked how he got into teaching Master's Classes and ultimately doing this documentary, he said, ?It started many years ago. During the writers strike of 2008. I asked myself what do I know how to do besides write and direct?? He realized that teaching could be a next step for him, but he wanted to make sure he took it more seriously. Since he began, he has strove to become a better educator. ?I have a desire to share information and love to be able to travel,? he said, adding he has been to countries like France, Australia, Canada, Turkey and he was scheduled to go to Athens, Greece the day after this interview.

?I get so much from my students. Being able to articulate the process makes [a person] a better director.? The idea for doing a film about his work came about when a friend who was an assistant director said that he ought to film himself teaching. ?Of course, being a filmmaker, once you put something down [on film], you realize maybe it should be more cinematic,? said Roth, trying to explain how he decided to intersperse teaching moments with interviews and clips. He added, ?I looked online and couldn't find anything remotely like it. It is a really good tool. I hope to sell it first to, hopefully, film classes.?

Fil m/ TV experience Roth's knowledge and technique is certainly invaluable to anyone pursuing a career in this field. After all, he has done more than 80 TV shows, 25 TV movies, and 13 feature films. He was a founding member of the Independent Feature Project and the first Co-Chairman of the DGA Independent Feature Committee. Bobby Roth grew up in Los Angeles, a block from where he lives today. He studied Philosophy and Creative Writing at UC Berkeley, then got a BA in Cinema at USC in 1972, and an MFA in Motion Picture Production from UCLA in 1975. ?I never thought I would be in the biz. I was going to go into floor covering business [like my dad]. When I went to school, it was a political time. A lot of people were trying to avoid the draft. I went to Berkeley as a conservative. I returned as left wing. I thought I would be an artist instead of a businessman,? he said. ?I thought I would be doing documentaries,? he continued. ?But my Master thesis was a dramatic film. I got bit by the bug [working with actors, etc.].? He started out doing indie films and would ?talk against television;? but, times, he said, have changed. ?I think TV, especially writing, got a lot better. [Movies] are for 12-year-old boys ? "Spiderman", "Ant Man", etc. I would rather

stay home and watch "Game of Thrones", "Mad Man" or "House of Cards.? Ironically, Roth has directed a Marvel TV show, "Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.", which he says is a challenge and a lot of fun to work on. Other shows he has worked on include ?Scorpion?, ?Lost,? ?The Player?, ?Revenge?, ?Grey's Anatomy?, ?Prison Break?, ?Hawaii Five-O? and many others. When asked about the difference between film and TV,? Roth says of television:? I love the pace. I love that you can finish within a month. I did ?Hawaii Five-0? from soup to nuts in four weeks.? His work is seasonal. He is very busy right now, but in April through June, it is slower so it is then that he works on his own projects. Above all, he still considers himself an independent filmmaker. Things have changed since he started. He says that now it is ?becoming easier to make a movie for less money, but it is difficult to find distribution.? ?Pick up a camera and get out there,? he said. He added that it is the filmmaker's job to be a visual storyteller, illustrated by something his 91-year-old mentor says -?put the camera where the story is.?

6

A show he wishes he could work on again is ?FlashForward.? ?I loved the acting and characters. I am really sorry it didn't go on. It would have been fun,? he said.

Writ ing mat t ers He also points out the importance of good writing. ?I liked 'Lost' because the writing was strong. It is easier to direct good writing. It attracts a better actor.? When asked if he ever changes a writer's script during filming, he said there is simply no time on an episodic to do so. There are very little changes in most cases. ?You have input in the location, the guest cast, [etc.], but the script doesn't change,? he said.

Deal ing wit h act ors When working with actors, he tries to feel them out, better understand what they need. ?You have to learn and understand the actor. Every actor is different. Some need discussion; some need to be loved; some need to be pushed ... Get to know the actor. I think it is in how you talk to people. Phrase what you say as a question instead of a demand. They will get in the spirit of trusting you because you trust them.?

7

Pre-product ion ?I make a meticulous shot list, incredibly detailed, with pictures, lenses, as much info. to the crew as possible," said Roth. "I used to just give it to the DP [Director of Photography], AD [Assistant Director] and script supervisor. Now, I give it to everyone. It can help the costume designer, the prop master, [etc.]." He added, ?Years ago. I was on a Polanski set. He was not a good dispenser of information. But he knew what he wanted. He was very intense. The ends justified the means to him. I think he is a good filmmaker ? 'Chinatown', 'The Pianist', 'Rosemary's Baby'. I didn't want to work the way he works. [As a director], you have to know yourself.? ?We get seven days of prep [for an episodic] to go learn the script, get locations and cast ... meetings, special effects, stunts, wardrobe, [etc.] It is jam packed,? he explained, adding, ?You want to be relaxed on set, not figuring out the mood of the scene, where to put the camera ? ? It is important, he said, to be prepared so that when you are on the set, as a filmmaker, you can be present to the actor. For more information, visit www.bobbyroth.net.

"FOLLOW" needs f unds The cast & crew of the feature film "Follow" is looking for funds to help with post-production. The 90-minute film by SXSW featured director Brody Gusar is a dark comedy that tells the story of a potentially psychotic director, Chuck, and his plan to make his former best-friend (a failed actor), Julian, famous - once and for all. As Chuck follows his friend around with a camera 24-7, he begins to get a glimpse of the life he'd been missing with his old friend and once-girlfriend (Julian's current wife). Despite her doubts about the project, Julian convinces her to let Chuck back into their lives. Events begin to spin out of control as Chuck starts manipulating Julian's friends and loved ones. But when Chuck's embarrassing YouTube posts of Julian's life begin to trend, they garnish enough hits to convince Julian that the quest is still worth pursuing despite everything. But is his "fame" worth it? The film stars James Kyson ("Heroes"), Lou Ferrigno ("The Hulk") and Jonathan Lipnicki ("Jerry Maguire"), among others. Di g I n Y'Al l w or k s on Season 2 Chef and author Chad Thilborger has been showing off his culinary prowess at local events and on his TV show "Dig In Y'all," shown on the CW. Now, he is going into season 2, which is slated to air Sundays at 11:30 a.m. ET on SFL/ CW and on Channel 16 ? Eye On South Florida (http://channel16live.com). Director Gabriel Kipling Tyner decided to go beyond "just a cooking show" and take host Thilborger back to his roots in Louisiana. Shot documentary style, the footage shows him walking the streets of New Orleans around the French Quarter and interacting with the people, including special guests from his childhood. "The show has evolved a lot since season one, where we were only based in South Florida. I wanted to make a show that was more documentary than actual cooking show. I even made sure that we have originally Zedeko style music by buying CDs and contacting the bands directly. Now, we have an original soundtrack by the band "Eight Dice Cloth." In season one,

Chad talks about his life in New Orleans, and, in season two, we actually filmed in New Orleans. This gave the opportunity to show exactly what Chad was talking about. "In season one, he talked a lot about his mother's kitchen, so we went there and filmed to give the audience a feel for where so many wonderful New Orleans meals have been made." Thilborger can be found traveling the United States and Europe and working as a motivational speaker and cooking demonstrator. He is a regular White Coat at Williams-Sonoma offering expert advice. In addition, he has appeared on the Financial News Network giving demos and advice for those watching their budgets in the kitchen. Chad has even made several visits as guest foodie on Rolonda Watt?s live radio show ?Sundays with Rolonda.? For more information and recipes, visit www.awholeheap.com.

Cannes winner t o show l ocal l y "The Wonders," which won the Grand Prix in 2014 in Cannes, opens Nov. 27 at Miami Beach Cinematheque, as well as the Living Room Theatres in Boca Raton, FL. Also a standout at the New York Film Festival, "The Wonders" is directed by young Italian filmmaker Alice Rohrwacher. The film centers on a family of beekeepers living in isolation in the Tuscan countryside. The dynamic of their overcrowded household is disrupted by the simultaneous arrival of a silently troubled teenage boy taken in as a farmhand and a reality TV show intent on showcasing the family. Both intrusions are of particular interest to the eldest daughter, Gelsomina (Maria Alexandra Lungu), who is struggling to find her footing in the world.

Frank Wolf Connell is hoping to create a theater in the N ew t h eat r e area around f or ind ies & liv e Orlando, FL to show p er f or m anc es? independent and cult films, as well as a place to showcase theatrical performances like "Rocky Horror Picture Show", "Repo! The Genetic Opera" , "Dr. Horrible" and other shadowcast type shows. Connell has written, directed and performed productions, as well as managing and running movie theatres and performing arts spaces for almost 20 years. He also can be found doing the Renaissance Festival circuit. He loves performing and doing live theatre in all its incarnations. His goal is to build a 200-seat theater and hopes to raise money through GoFundMe to secure a lawyer and architect to begin Phase 1. He said it also will help to secure future funding.
