In America’s food culture, we waste food by obsessing over absolute freshness and perfection. Forty percent of the food produced in the United States gets tossed in the trash even though much of it is still perfectly edible. This book is about how to reduce food waste in modern food culture. Finding recipes to cook using the whole vegetable, preserving leftovers for future meals, and recycling simple ingredients you’re likely to have in your pantry – This cookbook challenges people to rethink their eating habits and helps them to foster a healthy and sustainable kitchen in their home.

A P P R OAC H

The visual design is intended to send a message and educate readers in a way that is playful, interesting, and compelling. The use of a bright color palette, clean imagery, and direct writing is intended to give an “Mmm-that looks delicious” look and feel and to allow people to enjoy reading this cookbook.

The National Film Festival for Talented Youth (NFFTY) is hosted annually in Seattle, Washington. It is a platform that showcases the work of young directors under the age of 24 and introduces them to industry professionals as well. The festival includes film screenings, filmmaking workshops, and discussion with panels. The mission of NFFTY is nurturing the next generation of filmmakers to inspire, to lead, and to entertain the world with their stories.

A P P R OAC H

I developed a theme around the idea that “film starts here, a celebration of creativity that begins in the heart of every single film and in the story of every young director. Alternating from a creative, diverse, and dynamic voice for the brand, the visual system strives to translate parts of these attributes into the brand identity. The result features quirky graphic layouts with snapshots to invite and intrigue the viewer. Graphically, the bold use of colors and hand-drawn illustration accents create a sense of vibrancy, energy, and playfulness.

By 2050, the world’s population is expected to grow to 10 billion— and around 60% more food could be needed to feed everyone. Our need for food poses one of the biggest dangers to our survival. Nuture is a food retail brand that creates innovative functional foods and beverages to help people get more nutrients from alternative biomaterials. The goal of the project was to create packaging designs celebrating Nuture’s identity.

A P P R OAC H

Nuture products are wellmade, scientifically produced, and good for consumers, so I wanted to play up that idea. The challenge was developing a cohesive system that would work across various products under one visual identity. I created a color-coded, easy-to-understand system that has a clear scientific quality in it and communicates the functions and benefits of the product. A simple approach to layout, bold use of color, and minimal type treatments with metallic materials aims to present a new kind of food for the future.

The Exploratorium is the San Francisco public learning laboratory exploring the world through science, art, and human perception. However, it was clear that Exploratorium was struggling to communicate with visitors on mobile platforms. I redefined their digital presence from scratch to finish and streamlined a complex and content-rich website into an intuitive mobile application. Play is an ultimate Exploratorium guide mobile application to enhance the visitor’s museum experience.

A P P R OAC H

Galleries of the Exploratorium are full of intriguing exhibitions and vivid colors of light, so I took every opportunity to integrate that throughout the visual design. To create a logo and color palette, I took inspiration from exhibitions such as an optical illusion, a sound wave, and a fluorescent magenta color. I also chose to assign photography a central role for an intuitive user interface design.

In this project, I was to choose one of the problems that needed to be solved for a better San Francisco and create a campaign that would educate the public. Although they hold great potential, alleys between buildings are often forgotten spaces in the urban environment. They have existed as a sort of abandoned space; not public enough to feel protected, a backdrop to crime, filled with trash. This campaign strives to encourage the public to understand how alleyways can be improved and transformed into safe and inviting places full of characteristics.

A P P R OAC H

When creating the visual language for the campaign, it was important that complex urban planning and infrastructure didn’t intimidate readers. The first part of the book aims to demystify what alleys really look like around us and what their problems really are, while the second part of the book deconstructs guidelines for activating urban alleyways through case studies of major cities. The visual system was inspired by the environment standing around everyday corners such as signal lights, wayfinding, crossroads, and murals. This is combined with colorful, typographical, and dynamic visuals, encouraging us to see alleys with a fresh eye.

Charles and Ray Eames were a collaborative duo of American architects and designers known for their groundbreaking contributions to architecture and furniture design during the mid-20th century. The goal of this project was to create the artist collection paint packaging as a tribute to Charles and Ray Eames.

A P P R OAC H

The Duo is obviously named after the husband and wife duo Charles and Ray Eames, which provided much of the inspiration for the package identity. As for the mid-century modern designs—The combination of vintage warm colors paired with wood is used for the entire package design. The wordmark is huge to aid in the recognizability of a newto-market brand while making the typography hierarchy with collateral information that simply aligned with the color band.

I reimagined an independent bookstore on Valencia Street, San Francisco for renaming and rebranding. Known as Needles & Pens, this artsy shop that showcases locally made artist books, self-published zines, and handmade products, needed a new name and identity. Working through a comprehensive naming process, I developed the name ‘Indie Press’ that signals a creative and artistic store atmosphere, surrounded by books and zines. After identifying the new name, the goal was to develop a new identity system that clearly expressed their brand characteristics.

A P P R OAC H

Drawing inspiration from Indie Press’ natural character and distinct location on Valencia Street, it was essential to highlight the love for zines and local artists and the craftsmanship behind their product. A warm and inviting hand-drawn wordmark and the brightly warm color palette create an atmosphere that blends the rustic interior of the shop; a brand that makes space for artists, zines, and neighbors.

Graphicopoly is a board game project that was based on devising a plot and mechanics of a board game, as well as the creation of the graphic design. Graphicopoly is a new twist on a classic and perfectly made for gatherings of designers. This game keeps all the classic rules, however, game texts and illustrations are presented in a world of graphic design. The game illustrates the life of a graphic designer with humor. Players are encouraged to collaborate with famous graphic designers and to become involved in fun situations via the Magic Wand and Life Happens cards.

Architecture + the City Festival takes place in San Francisco every September and features exhibitions and tour series to promote a wide variety of architectural styles, neighborhoods, and residences—all from the architect's point of view. The Festival collaborates with architects to demonstrate the ways design contributes to an improved quality of our life in the ever-changing urban landscape. Architecture + the City Festival needed to establish an identity and strengthen its communication materials.

A P P R OAC H

I developed a new graphic identity and updated event materials. At the heart of the identity is a city landscape in a simple three-dimensional shape that directly references the architecture of San Francisco. The strong graphic system, typography, and color palette are designed to capture the geometric, symmetrical, and accurate characteristics of architecture. The key deliverables included a series of posters with dynamism and flexibility of a city landscape, festival collaterals, and a new website.
