/CONCEPT/
Beginning with the creative exploration phase, and embarking on a different process is a commitment. I want to create something different, by discovering new processes, and working with new mediums. Different is just another option, and it’s not for everyone. But if I want something unique, I need to find what that is and not assume that the same-old process is going to yield results. Different approaches lead to truly different results.

Annual Report /INSTRUCTOR/
David Hake
/OBJECTIVE/
Research a company in a field of interest and make sure the company/organization that is selected has an annual report or a CSR (corporate social responsibility) report online where you can harvest text. This assignment highlights the use of organizational text and illustration or appropriate photographs working with graphs, charts, tables, and infographics. These elements distinguish the annual report, so this would be a way to cover them.
/APPROACH/
I’m interested in the Lego company and redesigned their annual report for this project. In this book, I chose a circle as the main graphic element because of the shape of lego bricks. The bright orange and blue create contrast to attract audiences. Black and white photos are highlighted with information in orange. The two typefaces, Serifa and Univers, can work well together. I also used a circle to display the global map, and used different colors to highlight the important areas that show net profit for the year.

FOODPLAN Branding System
/OBJECTIVE/
Research one specific problem and find the solutions. Create a new brand to solve this problem by different approaches. The assignment includes logo design, SWOT analysis and competitors, creating personas and exploring main and sub messages of the brand to relate to three deliverables.
/INSTRUCTOR/
Sandra Isla
/APPROACH/
My topic is food waste, which is one of the largest waste-related challenges facing us. I created a brand, FOODPLAN, to solve this issue. I think people need a specific plan to help and remind them, and making a personal food plan is a mind-changer that can be positive and helpful. This brand can help people make a personal food plan to reduce waste. Three deliverables are an app, service and event that convey the idea effectively. Making a food plan can be positive and helpful to reduce unnecessary waste.

Typography Poster Series /INSTRUCTOR/
/OBJECTIVE/
A set of informational posters to introduce three different type classifications. Consider how to employ contrast in scale to create visual interest to attract the audience and express the information. The main purpose of these posters is to educate readers/viewers regarding the taxonomy of typefaces—what makes each of them different from the other.
John Nettleton /APPROACH/
I chose two sans serif and one serif typeface that have different characteristics to create a poster series. The three typefaces are Optima, Futura and Caslon. The series used the same grid for each of them, and black to make them more clean. Three large letters in different positions on the poster show the different characteristics of the font, and the triangle creates a balance in visual effects. I put the annotation beside the big letter to create a contrast in hierarchy. I want to demonstrate respect for content by making it legible and accessible.

Type Specimen Promotion /INSTRUCTOR/
John Nettleton
/OBJECTIVE/
Type foundries deliver promotional materials when they release new typefaces. The task is to deliver an engaging type promotion, which is a type specimen. This must appeal to graphic designers and a type savvy audience. As with every major project, it will start with a creative brief and give more freedom in developing the content. Most importantly, this piece should be fun and engaging; it should make the typeface sing, show its proper usage and illustrate its appeal.
/APPROACH/
I chose “Parisine” as my typeface for this work. “Parisine” was created in 1996, and it has been the official typeface for the Paris subway system (used in the Paris Métro, tramways, buses and RER operated by the RATP Group in Île-de-France) since 2015. I got inspiration from it. I compared the characteristics of this typeface on the front, and chose some letters from underground transportation signs to display the typeface. I also designed an envelope to complete my concept, and I put “entrance” on the back of the envelope to add interest.

Lego in Future /INSTRUCTOR/
/OBJECTIVE/
Generate a book about the future based on a company’s annual report. If the company makes a product or promotes a service you can imagine what that might be like in 20 years. It may begin by asking a question, picking a year, looking closely at an image, defining a topic, or some other technique.
David Hake /APPROACH/
According to my research, Lego wants to research and add VR technology to Lego games in the future. Lego has tried adding VR to existing Lego games, but it is not widely used. I think VR technology can be more widely developed in the future. Lego will not only focus on practical ability, but also consider how to change visual effects. In this future book, I chose green as the main color to contrast with blue. A short blue bar created hierarchy, and all elements lend a future feeling.

Cover Design /INSTRUCTOR/
John Nettleton
/OBJECTIVE/
Design a series of three book covers that include front, spine and back to represent a reissue from a publisher. Each selected title should be different enough from each other to give individuality to the books. They all need to have some grounding elements to tie them all together. Each front cover design should reflect the essence of the book, giving the reader a hint of the book.
/APPROACH/
I chose three books that were written by Paul Theroux. These books are travel journals of the author’s travel experiences. For the first book, about the sea, I drew wave lines and blue to express the book content. The second one is through China by train, and I used straight lines and red to reflect the essence of the book. I chose circles to design the third one because it’s travel writing that’s about different places. I chose yellow to complete the series of covers. The author’s name, logo of publisher and bar code follow the lines’ flow to create interest.
