PROJECT 01 designing systems for meaning out of designed

making artifacts

for project 01, I had to go out on one square block and document all of the graphic design i could find within that block. this was not a challenege, as i discovered graphic design is all around us. the next step was to learn about the grid, and create matricies to describe the different signifiers and signs of design. once i understood these aspects of design, i made the final part of this project which were the typologies. the typologies are studies of just one category of anything that involves design.

PROJECT 02

find the message content of visual form, and how it correlates with visual meaning

for project 02, i had to study landscapes and see howo bjects overlapped to create foreground, middleground, and background. i had to create a fantastic landscape that was supposed to be sureal. i did this by scanning images into the computer from my favorite books and magazines. not only were these images perfect for what i wanted my landscape to portray, but they also represented me and my interests. the final goal was to create a book cover from my montaged landscape.

PROJECT 03

form as a identity, create a short narrative about the evolution of a symbol

for project 03, i was presented with a symbol and i had to make it in illustrator. i then had to come up with my own symbol that would correlate with the one i was given. the main study within the project was to design the process that takes place in between both symbols. the process could only be seven frames long, including the first and final symbols, and could only be made with the shapes used in the making of both symbols.this project involved a lot of planning and sketching to get the final product.

PROJECT 04

type + image / page layout and the grid

RR

for project 04, i started off by collecting physical print materials that could only be black and white text. i then created studies of the type cut and pasted within a grid. the grid system was a big part of this project. after making many grid studies, i took my best 7 and scanned them into the computer. i cleaned them up in photoshop and then took them into indesign to see how they worked with eachother. the final goal of the prject was to have five compositions that worked well with eachother.

Wolfgang Weingart is an internationally known graphic designer and typographer. His work is categorized as Swiss typography and he is credited as “the father” of New Wave or Swiss Punk typography. It is said that an object is not able to speak for itself, but is in fact ‘spoken for’ by its social and political context. Rather than there being one ideal aesthetic solution to a design brief, there is an acknowledgment that different solutions exist for different circumstances. Postmodernism is a time in design when many things happened. The internet was made commercialized and the first Macintosh was introduced, both events causing a design revolution. The cold war ending also caused relief and impacted design in a positive way. aiga.org / tailb.blogspot.com / gdh.2rsolutions.cz
