Endless Summer Days
Are the summertime blues just a saying or are there really facts behind the saying? You’ve probably heard about seasonal affective disorder, or SAD. This condition affects about 4% to 6% of the U.S. population. SAD typically causes depression as the days get shorter and colder. But about 10% of people with SAD get it in the reverse -- the onset of summer triggers their depression symptoms. There are studies that have shown in countries near the equator – such as India – summer SAD is more common than winter SAD. Why do seasonal changes cause depression? Experts aren’t sure, but the longer days, and increasing heat and humidity may play a role. Specific symptoms of summer depression often include loss of appetite, trouble sleeping, weight loss, and anxiety. Here are some reasons that experts say can trigger summertime blues: 1. Extreme heat 2. Body anxiety due to the fact that people wear less clothes in the summer. 3. Long summer days which leads to staying up later and not getting enough rest 4. Vacation expenses or not being able to afford a vacation, etc.
TEN WAYS TO BEAT
The Summertime Blues 1. Stay active. 2. Don't isolate yourself. 3. Don't give in to negative thoughts. Replace them immediately with something positive. 4. Take a walk outside. A walk in the park may soothe the mind and change the workings of our brains in ways that improve our mental health, according to an interesting new study. 5. Bring nature into your home. Experts say that plants reduce stress and anxiety and increase attention. In addition, plants can reduce the amount of airborne pollutants. 6. If you can't afford a fancy vacation, don't deprive yourself. Find something close to home in your budget. 7. Stay on a schedule. Having a routine helps the day to go by faster. 8. Stay hydrated and eat healthy. You'll have more energy! 9. Get a good night's sleep. 10. Don't compare yourself to others!

COLOR POWER
Can lipstick really boost your mood? Some experts say "yes". In a recent study of the emotional and physical reactions to a variety of female images with and without makeup, not only did the images of the made-up faces get rated more positively than the unadorned ones, but women viewing them experienced decreased heart rate, indicating a positive physiological response. Also, half the women had a measurably improved immune response and a decrease in stress hormones after viewing the pictures of the women wearing makeup, an effect that is known as the "Lipstick Effect“. The "Lipstick Effect can be traced all the way back to the Great Depression. Essentially, during times of economic hardship, sales of cosmetics increased. Back in the early 1930s, while industrial production was cut in half, makeup sales rose, proving that a little bit of lipstick can go along way to brighten your day!
THE ATTACK OF THE WHITE FACIAL BUMPS
SEBACEOUS HYPERPLASIA What is it, what causes it, and how to get rid of it! Ok, so your over 40 and you've had oily skin your whole life. You're finally getting to the point where your face doesn't break out anymore, you don't have to touch up your makeup every hour or carry blotting paper with you wherever you go. You're thinking, "Yes! I'm liking this! Life is good." Then WHAM! Out of nowhere, these white lumps start popping up all over your face. You make the mistake of trying to squeeze them, only to discover that nothing comes out! So what are these pesky little things? Where do they come from? And how in tarnation can you get rid of them? If this sounds like you, then you have a condition called Sebaceous hyperplasia. These are benign bumps on the skin that form as a result of damage, leading to an ongoing problem with over-productive oil glands. These damaged oil glands can become enlarged and clogged in a very specific manner, displaying a soft or firm white or yellowish outer rim with a depressed center. The depressed center of these bumps is one of the primary ways you can tell you’re dealing with sebaceous hyperplasia, and not with something else such as a whitehead (milia). It’s not uncommon to have several of these bumps at once, sometimes spaced apart, but they can be clustered, too. Sebaceous hyperplasia is most often seen on the forehead and central part of the face, but can appear anywhere on the body, especially in areas where the skin has more oil glands. Cumulative sun damage is considered to be a co-factor of this condition because sunlight further damages skin and oil glands—one more reason to make sure you’re protecting your skin every day with a wellformulated sunscreen! How to Get Rid of Sebaceous Hyperplasia Treating sebaceous hyperplasia usually requires a visit to the dermatologist. That's right! All those years of basking in the sun in our youth comes to haunt us later! But there is hope! One way is to have the dermatologist simply zap them off. All you feel is a little sting, and poof, they are gone. The machine concertizes each spot, and there is no bleeding. It's considered a cosmetic treatment, so most insurance plans do not cover the procedure. Shop around and ask for prices. Dr. Ananth, of Mandeville, LA charged me $150 to remove up to 14 bumps which I thought was a fair price! How to Prevent Facial peels—This involves using salicylic acid or trichloroacetic acid.
