Question One

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

ONPOINT

THE FRONT COVER

The front cover of a magazine is argued to be the most important feature in making the magazine a success as it is the first aspect your audience will see to the magazine. It is an important chance for a magazine to clearly stand out amongst the hundreds of professional magazines already available both in store and online. Therefore every concept on my front cover has been planned in-depth to make sure it is successful in attracting my target audience but also challenge forms and convections to give my magazine several unique qualities.

HARDBARZHARVEY COMES CLEAN

WHO IS

THE BEST RAPPER EVER? YOU DECIDE

The full bleed image takes over the majority of the page allowing the audience to see the artist’s expression and body language in the mid shot. This also allows the audience to be intrigued in what the artist is wearing and would want to purchase it as the props and costumes used are typically found amongst other R&B artists such as the chain and snapback seen wore by Drake on the cover of Vibe magazine. However my magazine is unconventional in the fact that the front cover shows a female artist who is taking the stereotypical aggressive and strong role found by many male rappers in R&B, compared to females who often used sex appeal to attract the audience. This contrast will intrigue readers as they want to find out more about the artist. Other convections such as price and date, barcode, issue number are typical of a professional magazine which allows the reader to acknowledge the general information that is needed to be known e.g. the price of purchasing the magazine is only £2.50 which will appeal to my target audience and stay out against other fairly expensive magazines in the market. The masthead is fairly typical of a magazine as it takes up a majority of the page as is appeared behind the artists head to exaggerate her importance in the magazine. This is traditionally seen in other R&B magazines due to the featured artists being traditionally a powerful role model. The masthead will stand out to readers as it appears fairly large and bold in size and also by continuing the colour scheme using dark red will highlight the house style used throughout the magazine. Additionally, the sell lines appear unconventional as the font used is formal and extremely bold using a grey outline in several of the sell lines. However this guarantees that they will grab the reader’s attention and clearly stand out against the full bleed image. The interesting sell lines will entice the audience to purchase the magazine as the sell lines used variation of lists, brief sentences and quotes which are not typically found in all magazines. Furthermore, by creating a plug in the form of a button will grab my reader’s attention and challenge the traditional convections of an R&B magazine. On the other hand, through featuring famous artists seen in other professional magazines will attract my target audience as they will be able to be on trend with the latest information and gossip of the artists. The colours I’ve used in my front cover follow the house style of dark red, black, grey and white which are somewhat conventional colours as are seen in other R&B magazines such as Vibe and XXL. This outlines that my magazine continues the typical R&B feel as these colour connate power and danger. Additionally, the colours used such as red and white are highlighted in the props and costumes used such as the white and red outlined ‘86’ shown on the jersey. This is not traditionally common amongst other magazines therefore my magazine challenges the convections of real media

THE CONTENT PAGE The font challenges the traditional professional magazine as I decided to use an informal and bold font as this would attract my target audience and makes sure the content of my magazine clearly stands out. The title ‘Content Page NO1’ uses the same font used as the headlines and subheading throughout the magazine, which highlight the continuous house style in my magazine. Highlighted in the band index my magazine uses stereotypical R&B artists which conform to the genre such as Eminem, Kayne West, Nicki Minaj etc and albums such as drake; nothing was the same and Eminem Marshall Mathers LP 2. This clearly identifies to the audience the genre of the music magazine and only using artists that readers are likely to be fans of. Additionally, by featuring over 50 artist’s challenges the traditional convections of existing magazines as by featuring a vast amount of artists will give my target audience a variety of choice unlike other music magazines in the market only providing a short quantity of artists. My wide variety of artists in my magazine was inspired by NME content page as is contains several artists on the left hand side of the page. On the other, my magazine challenges the traditional R&B magazine, as shown in Vibe magazine my magazine contains several images rather than a full bleed image taking up the majority of the page.

The images used featured famous R&B artist which fulfils the purpose of magazines to provide readers with the latest and most popular artist so they can be on trend with their latest albums and tours. Also all images used are of high quality and vary from mid to wide shots that cannot be found anywhere else which is not typically found in other magazines, therefore readers will believe my magazine to be trustworthy and reliable as it provides unique images and content not found anywhere else. My content page is separated into four different sections ‘featured’, ‘band index’, ‘regular’ and ‘exclusive’. This follows the typical layout of a professional magazine by dividing each section within a column onto the double spread page and therefore makes it easier for readers to navigate themselves around the page to found what they are looking for. Features such as reviews are informative to the reader and it would be something the reader would want to know. Albums such as ‘Drake nothing was the same’ allows the reader to know what’s new with the music industry which keeps the reader up to date with what is on trend. Throughout my content page I have made my page numbers larger than all of the other text to make them stand out using the house style, and this makes the magazine easier to navigate around for the reader as they can easily find what they want to read quickly. Also by providing the issue number helps the reader to identify this is only the first issue of the magazine therefore they will be intrigued on what the magazine has to provide. My magazine develops the traditional feature of featuring the front cover of the issue on the corner of the content page. This is unlikely to be featured on most R&B magazines therefore my magazine will clearly stand out amongst the other R&B in the market. This feature will give the front cover even more significance and importance to the magazine. My magazine is unconventional in the fact that it offers all types of media that not all other magazines offer. My magazine uses social networking such as twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and has its own website. This outlines that my target audience will have easy access to my magazine both in shops and online therefore readers will feel a part of a community of readers of the magazine. Equally, my magazine challenges other magazines by using informal and urban phrases throughout the content page which is not commonly found in other professional magazines. This makes my magazine stand out clearly from other magazines and relate more to the typical R&B genre.

HARD BARZ HARVEY

18

West London finest and 2013’s biggest success story. HardBarzHarvey thought her life was over, kicked out of school with no qualifications and a drug addiction. Now 12 months on, she has toured with Eminem and signed with Aftermath Entertainment. Only OnPoint has the exclusive on her success.

THE DOUBLE SPREAD PAGE

The title ‘HardBarzHarvey’ is used to introduce the article and is found to take up the majority of the left hand side page. Typically found in other professional magazines, the artists name is emphasised to exaggerate their importance in the feature. However, my magazine uses an informal font which is not typically seen in other magazine therefore readers will be intrigued to read the article as they are aware of the informal content specifically targeted for my young audience. Furthermore, the full bleed image on the double spread page develops the traditional convection of magazines using statement images for fans to use as posters. As the mid shot of the artist portrays the fun and happy side to her not seen so far in the magazine, this will grab the reader’s attention by challenging the stereotypical aggressive and powerful images most R&B magazines feature. Shown in other magazines such as Q the featured artist Kid Cudi potrays the stereotypical aggressive attitude through the use of body language and facial expressions.

Through the use of props, the microphone is used to clearly state the artist’s passion for music which is commonly seen in other existing magazines. Additionally, the red nail varnish and grey jumper worn by the artist continues the house style shown throughout the magazine. The use of linking both the full bleed image and house style is not shown in many of the examples featured therefore my magazine will appear more continuous throughout the issue.

Unlike other existing magazines, my magazine does not use sex appeal to gain male readers. Seen in the double spread page of Rihanna through the use of clothing and body language Rihanna uses male gaze to directly grab the male reader’s attention. However, my magazine does not conform with this idea and uses stereotypically male clothing and positive attitude to intrigue male readers. This challenges the traditional R&B magazine as it is commonly known amongst readers that famous artists such as Rihanna,Nicki Minaj, Beyonce etc will all conform to using sex appeal to engage readers.

e are sitting in a cafe, tucked out of view in one of London’s stylish backstreets. Not exactly a very urban setting but is said to be HardBarzHarvey’s favourite place to get food after a long day at the stuido.10am sees HardBarzHarvey walks in fashionably late with her vintage baseball jersey, snapback and her brand new jordan’s looking very OnPoint. We tuck in to her favourite breakfast of a full English with all the works;bacon, eggs, beans, mushrooms and endless amounts of tea. “I’m not about this whole size 6 image all the magazine talk about, eating salads and exercising 24/7 fuck that! .I love food way too much to be starving myself! “ As the public know Georgia is known for her outspoken opinions and she says “Just say it how it is or you’re not going to get anywhere in life”. Our researchers clearly found out that Georgia will not hold back on anything she believes in.

We get a deep and meaningful understanding of the hurdles that she had to overcome to get to the place she is today. When asking about her parents she tells us “whenever I get onto that topic it always ends up in tears or anger.” After a large chug of her tea she starts to tell us exclusively her traumatic experience. “My mum and dad both died when I was only 11years old. They were both in a horrific car crash on their way home. I was waiting for them at home for hours on end until my grandma called me hysterically crying on the phone telling me the news.” Through these tough times life was far from easy for Georgia, “I got kicked out of school and thought drugs would make me forget about it all.” Georgia reached the lowest point of her life. Spending all the money she earn on drugs, taking them day in day out quickly becoming addicted. “I don’t know at what point exactly it started to

“"I couldn’t believe that anybody could be naturally happy with their life without being on sOMETHING"

A lot of fans love the way she is, wishing they were just like her as her life seems to be perfect. As Georgia proves us wrong “I lived on a council estate in West London, YES of course I was one of those stereotypical ‘chavs’ who owned a Just do it bag, sleeked back hair and massive diamond hoops from Primark. I thought school wasn’t important and thought bunking school with my mates, hanging round on the streets and getting involved in all kind of shit was a good idea.” “My life was at such a low, I got kicked out of school when I was 14 with no qualifications, no job...nothing. I thought my life was over. Where was I supposed to go from here?” This was a surprising side to see of the hard and outspoken image Georgia has always portrayed. Everyone believes her life to be a fairy tale and by simply just posting a video on YouTube got to where she is now. This is far from the truth.

be a problem. I just remember liking it more and more,” she admits. “People tried to tell me that I had a problem, but I just didn’t listen “Ultimately, Georgia was hospitalized and on the brink of death. “Had I got to the hospital about two hours later, I would have died,” she says. “My organs were shutting down. My liver, kidneys, everything. They were gonna have to put me on dialysis. They didn’t think I was gonna make it. My bottom was gonna be death.” After a relapse and eventual detox, Georgia finally got her habit under control. “I had to regain motor skills, I had to regain talking skills. It’s been a learning process, I’m growing,” reveals the rapper. “I couldn’t believe that anybody could be naturally happy with their life without being on something. “Almost dying changed my life, I now realise that I have a purpose in life and that is music”. So I

would say to anybody, ‘It does get better, you just have to believe in yourself

During Georgia’s recovery she lived with her Grandmother, Margaret and Grandfather Thomas. “I guess that’s the reason why I am so close to them. They are the reason why I am here today. They did everything for me and actually believed I could make something out of myself. ” So how did Georgia become HardBarzHarvey? Georgia reveals that even though music has always been her passion in life, she never thought she was good enough to make it. However that all changed when she stumbled upon an Aftermath Entertainment competition. They wanted to find the next biggest worldwide rapper. “I thought to myself how sick would that be to win that competition, a record contract with none other than Dr Dre.” “…I just had to it”.

@Shannonxo : HardBarzHarvey is my idol! Her fashion and voice are OnPoint #AbsoluteLegend

The competition required a submitted video to YouTube of an original song or rap. Coming up with an original song was no problem for Georgia, “I‘ve always been writings raps, I have a whole book filled with them. It’s all I would do in class instead of actually working”. Within 2 weeks of submitting the video to YouTube, Georgia reached over one million views. “I couldn’t believe it. I was actually speechless”. Her video become popular all over the world, getting more and more views every hour. It was no surprise that Dr Dre declared Hard-

BarzHarvey the winner of the competition. He immediately gets Georgia on the first flight to LA to meet in his studio. “The first time I’ve ever even been on a plane is to go to meet Dr Dre in his studio. Madness!” “It was literally a dream. Meeting Dr Dre for the first time in the studio has to be one of the highlights of my life. It was as if we already

THE DOUBLE SPREAD PAGE - THE FEATURED ARTICLE Likewise, the pull quotes shown in dark red clearly stand out to readers also by the quotes highlighting the topic of death and drugs will successfully grab the reader’s attention. The strong content featured is typical of R&B magazines due the stereotype of male rappers in the R&B industry shown in many featured articles of Drake, Lil wayne in XXL and Vibe magazine.

The double page spreads include the interview on the well-known artist allowing the audience to learn more information about that artist. As one of the main reasons people buy magazines is to read more about the artists to create a personal relationship with them which my magazine successfully fulfils this aspect. As traditionally similar to other professional magazines my featured article uses a interview style article to allow the artist to express her opinions freely.

The images used vary from mid to wide shots however all similarly use urban settings shown in the variation of graffiti in the background. My magazine develops the traditional urban feel to R&B magazine shown in the trendy fashion however through the use of location my target audience can relate to the magazine more due to the likelihood of them living in an urban area instead of featuring studio locations throughout my magazine.

My article uses columns throughout which conforms with traditional professional magazines therefore making the article more appealing to read as the article is separated into paragraphs as shown in the featured article of The Vaccines. Similarly , my magazines develops the concept of using a larger letter at the start of the article as this will intrigue my target audience to read the magazine as they are not put off the large portion of text. Likewise to other magazines the letter appears in a black font to follow the house style of my magazine to emphasis the continuity throughout.

On the other hand, my magazine challenges other magazines in the market by using fans tweets at the bottom of each page to fulfil the readers wish to be an insider of the magazine. As my target audience are heavily involved in social networking daily, the use of social networking in my magazine will likely get my magazine well known and readers more involved in the magazines issue unlike any R&B magazines available

knew each other before. We connected immediately, we shared so many musical and general interests. I am so thankful for the success and platform he has given me” Georgia career has been reaching ultimate heights in just a short space of time. But as she reveals one of the most life changing experiences happened only just a few months later, “I was just in the studio, recording my new track Relapse and none other than the rap god that is Eminem walks in. I’ve never been so star struck in my life. I admire him so much from what he has overcome in his life. He is a lyrical genius plus he is extremely hot in person.” After Dr Dre introducing the pair, Eminem admits to truly admiring Georgia’s story of how she got to where she is now. After just a week of knowing each other, Eminem decides to feature in HardBarzHarvey track It Gets Betters. The track is truly mind-blowing, with deep meaningful lyrics and an old school hip hop feel to the song. OnPoint predict this track to be a worldwide success as it can relate to everyone. Not only did Eminem decide to feature on one of HardBarzHarvey’s tracks but also invites the rapper to support him round his Europe tour. “I was speechless. How could someone like me, who lives in a council flat in west London now been going for a two month tour… I have truly been blessed”. Before preparing for the Europe tour Georgia admits to us exclusively, she has never been to a concert before touring with Eminem “I would have loved to, but as if I could afford paying £40 for a ticket.” After revealing this to her team, Georgia is lucky enough to get front row and back stage passes to Kayne West Yeesus World tour, telling us it was “life changing”. Inspirations were the key reason why Georgia has her passion for music. Throughout her life she has grown up with the passion for R&B and rap music as it has always been around in any tough situation. “The legends Tupac and Biggie are the reason why rap is the way it is. They are never someone I would even try to mimic, I idolised they way too much.” “Of course I love Kayne West,Eminem,Jay Z Drake.. The list would never end but I truly do idolise female artists like Nicki Minaj, Iggy Azalea, and Ciara as they have made such a big impact on females finally be accepted in the rap industry.” There’s no denying the fact that HardBarzHarvey is all that everyone is talking about right now. Her ups and downs are what have got her to where she is now. When asked if this is the “most insane year of her life so far”, the rapper states, “Everything is so chaotic and crazy right now and it’s so much all at once, but I’m living for it. I’m just having the best time ever and everything’s falling into place like it’s supposed to. Even people who want to hate on me, they can’t even shut down the fact that I’m literally what everyone is talking about. I don’t want to say that I’m on top right now – I feel like I’m kind of an underdog in a cool way.” “I don’t intend on selling dreams to young people or being a role model. My generation has it the worst; I swear life isn’t the big fairy tale that Disney makes it out to be or the image that the hip hop industry portrays that money, drugs and violence is so badass and cool-far from it. I learnt how hard life is but you know what, I’m tougher.”… “Cause when life puts you in tough situations don’t say, Why me? Just say Try me.”

deliver. So many of her fans and the public admire the rapper of the struggles she has overcome and the blessed talent she has. Her album Unbreakable is set to sell worldwide breaking records already set by the legends. HardBarzHarvey tell us “Instead of turning to drugs, I express all my experiences and problems into my raps. If any one of my songs can help anyone who is in a tough situation and ultimate low, I will be truly happily. I want my music to reflect how life is far from perfect, as my grandparents have always said to be, Remember that life is full of ups and down but without the downs, the ups would mean nothing.”

"I’'ve learnt how hard life is but you know what, i'm tougher.”"

Exclusively OnPoint has the full tracklist of HardBarzHarvey new album It Gets Better. The 10 tracks are set to break records all over the world as we predict the album to sell millions. Even though the album is very deep and explicit, as HardBarzHarvey raps in details the lows of her life as seen in Addiction and Recovery. The fans will truely love her honesty and HardBarzHarvey clearly doesn’t hold back. A clear favourite on the track is already top selling single It Gets Better. The song expresses her ultimate high and happiness on where she is now and hopefully “It gets better from here and out”. Your faithfully being the last track made on the album is set to shock many fans as it shows of HardbarzHarvey OnPoint vocals as she expresses the pain of losing her parents. Being the only slow song on the album, it will be able to appeal to a vast audience as it clearly shows HardBarzHarvey’s variation as a artist as she hopes her lyrics will touch many of her fans as she knows everyone has lost someone close to heart.

As Georgia is set to release her first album by the end of this year, expectations are high of what HardBarzHarvey has to

THE DOUBLE SPREAD PAGE - FEATURED ARTICLE AND BOX OUT TEXT I chose to fill a double page spread with a full bleed image of the article as I feel my target audience will appreciate an image this large of the music artist if they are a big fan. Readers may use this photo to stick up on their bedroom walls to idolize their favourite rapper due to her inspirational story. Additionally, similary shown in the rest of the magazine the colours featured in her clothing follow the house style of the magazine emphasising the continuity that other magazines in the market do not have. Readers are likely to first notice the pull quote and base their decision on whether or not they shall read the article on this, so it’s vital to have bold clear pull quotes, in the recognisable house style. The pull quote is shown in the dark red informal font, fitting in with the house style, to emphasise the quote. The quotes used highlight the in-depth interview and will shock readers as it uses strong content about drugs and death which is stereotypically associated with R&B however is not commonly talked about in all magazines. Page number are used in the corner of each page as this is typically found in all magazine therefore portraying to the audience my magazine is professional as it include all key concepts that other existing magazines fulfil. The box out text includes a review of the artists latest album. As shown in the classic rock magazine there are several reviews of White Window’s available albums shown in the featured article. Likewise to other professional magazines, a review of the album will promote the artist and will fulfil the purpose to give readers an inside of the artist work.
