The Times Editorial design, typography, ART DIRECTION, illustration, digital design June 2017 - present My role at the Times has been pivotal in my growth as a designer. The news room is often an incredibly hectic environment with a lot of voices all trying to be heard, paired with very tight deadlines. My role is to liase with editors, journalists and creative leads to get our world-class journalism out in the most visually exciting way possible, to all of our readers across print and digital. This has made me very effective at producing great results under pressure with a fast turn-around. The editors are often like clients, who throw things back repeatedly until they are happy with the result. This constant collaboration and critique has helped me learn a lot about achieving the best design solutions.

A CROSS PLATFORM EXPERIENCE At the Times our solutions have to be adaptable cross platform to accomodate the growing digital audience. As a designer, I create print solutions for all sections such as arts, culture, fashion, news, property, sport and travel. However it is not enough to be a strong print designer; we have to constantly be thinking and taking initiative about how these will transfer onto our digital platforms.
A FOUR STEP PROCESS One of my favourite parts about this role is being involved in all areas of the story being brought to life. First designing in print, and then adapting the content in a clear and unified way for tablet, mobile, and desktop.

The Times Art Direction and Illustration Rise of the Robots; Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Law I've also been fortunate to be made creative lead on some incredible project. which allowed me to take on a more art director role. This was a project led by myself for The Times where I had to create the visual identity for an annual report about Artificial Intelligence and the future of law, aimed at those working in the legal profession. They wanted to transform quite statistic heavy information into visually engaging content, but on a small budget. I created the illustrations myself, as well as designing the publication for print and online.
Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop were used to create these custom illustrations

idea > Research> development > final result Creative lead - Armistice illustration for wrap Working for an esteemed newspaper means a level of integrity and authenticity in everything we do, which makes a strong design process fundamental to all projects. For this armistice illustration, I was briefed with the idea to make a 'Tommy' infographic, reminiscent of the illustrative style of the time. This was an incredibly exciting challenge for me as a designer and illustrator, and a lot of visual research and planning went into the stylistic choices. I researched the authenticity of the drawings through archive imagery and literature, and created mood-boards and concept development, before executing the final illustration for deadline.

Good Housekeeping Editorial design, typography, ART DIRECTION, illustration
May 2016– July 2017 This was a position where creativity was championed and a fantastic environment where I grew as a designer in skills and confidence. My responsibilties included:
designing pages, liasing with editorial teams and the Editor to create the best design solutions, creating logos and online marketing materials, commissioning illustrators, picture researching, creating
illustrations and assisting at photoshoots. Working for such an esteemed and recognisable brand was fantastic as there was a real community spirit in the team to get the best results possible.
PHOTOSHOOT ASSISTANCE Assisting at photoshoots was one of the most interesting parts of my job as I could really become involved in the design decisions from an early stage. I assisted at several food shoots like but also portraits such as above. The above was shot with the typography and illustrations in mind, which I then implemented digitally on page.

Good Housekeeping concept to creation As an illustrator, this was a dream role for me as we had a lot of conceptual features which required a lot of planning, idea development and execution. In addition to this I would have to commission a lot of illustrators, such as "the magic of living big" (bottom right), where I would have to option some illustrators for the editor to approve, write the brief, liase with agencies to arrange a fee, and go back with the illustrator with any tweaks.

NOT JUST A DESIGNER I have a real passion for illustration and believe it can breathe life into the creative process. I have had illustrations printed in City AM, Good Housekeeping, Prima and The Times and here are a few examples of projects I have worked on. This series was developed from an illustration for Good Housekeeping which I developed into a narrative, as a personal project and exploration of form and colour.

Type and colour development
El Borracho - 'The Drunk' This was a visual identity brief to create a brand identity for a new taco and margarita restaurant called El Borracho. The client wanted to target the modern millenial, with an inexpensive price point but fun, fresh and trendy vibe. They wanted a logo and colour strategy that represented this and that would appeal to this audience. I chose lime green and 'millenial' pink as my two main colours. I felt this was a fresher take on the traditional, bright, mexican colour pallete. The drunk skull was a nod to the traditional mexican motif - with the emphasis on the margarita glass. I felt this was a recognisable yet humourous way to get across the meaning behind El Borracho.

Visual Identity
What She Said This was a self directed project in which I created the masthead, grid, and visual strategy for a new independent lifestyle magazine called What She Said, written entirely by women for women. The magazine was to highlight female creative achievement, and provide inspiration from interiors, to textile design, to poetry, to illustration. I chose a very simple yet modern design, with a simple tonal colour scheme of navy, grey, and burnt orange. I also art directed and curated the content, including all shoots.

Visual Identity The Lab Branding, Logo design, and website mock-up for a University collaboration website. They wanted it to look separate in identity from the academic sites, in order to appeal to the student demographic studying in the arts.
Lash art by Sarah Branding, Logo design, pattern design, business card design for a eyelash technician. Sarah wanted something feminine and classy in a polished and unique design. She particularly wanted to try calligraphy in her logo. I came up with designing a unique pattern to use as the brand's base. We chose black, white and gold as the primary colour pallete and I created this textured pattern as an alternative to block colours.
