Unexpected outcomes is a project exploring the unintentional and chance outcomes that film photography can offer. It aims to explore and highlight the ways in which chance can effect a process in a beneficial way and offer interesting and alternative results. Rather than always planning something, allow the possibilities of chance to work to your advantage, embrace the unknown welcome mistakes. The unexpected could be defined as something that produces an unplanned outcome, something surprising that could offer new direction and possibilities to your work. The element of chance interferes and creates playful, diverse possibilities confronting us with extraneous variables. Mistakes, accidents and unplanned outcomes should be taken as an opportunity to develop and push something beyond a conceived idea. Being playful encourages the unpredictable and allows the unexpected a greater role in the outcome created.
This publication focusses on using the camera in a different way by unleashing the possibilities of allowing chance to lead the actual outcome. The photographs within this publication are created through one taking themselves out of the process, not focussing on composure and actual outcome but rather allowing the camera to work in a playful experimental way which creates outcomes of an unexpected nature. This publication aims to showcase what you can achieve when approaching photography through the eyes of chance and unpredictability. If we choose to use a film camera in a playful and experimental way we can explore the different converging lines within one image. We encounter an element of surprise and are unaware of what results we will create. This adventurous approach allows you to capture photographs of what isn’t actually there, preferring to work much like our memory, melting and converging lines of images together, creating something tangible, a moving memory captured in one photograph. This publication works with a hash tag and numbering system. Refer to the chart on the following page if you wish to understand how the photograph was created.
