DEAR READERS, We’ve reached two years with Quiescent, finally. It’s weird reaching this point because I ended my last magazine, Racing Minds, after two years. I am determined, however, to keep Quiescent going. But keep your eyes peeled on our Facebook page and Tumblr - we’ll be going through some major renovations in the near future: different website, fewer issues a year so that they’re more spread apart and a bit less stressful, maybe even a different name. But don’t worry, the magazine will be so much better. I hope you enjoy this issue, our two year issue. Thank you all for your continued support with this magazine. It truly means the world.

Tell us about yourself. I’m Gabrielle (or Gail, if my full name is too much of a mouthful) and I’m nearing the ripe old age of 19. I do not have a permanent address at the moment, I go to art school and very much love it, I enjoy long walks either alone or with a companion, and sometimes I write and do yoga and draw hair. Describe your process when photographing. Do you sketch out concepts beforehand or have some kind of set up you always use? I usually come up with the concept first by writing it all down in my journal (which is full of just random notes, scribbles, thoughts, etc.), and automatically start to think: “who do I see modeling this for me?” Models are extremely important and crucial to my process, thus I have nothing but the utmost respect for them and try to make them

feel as comfortable as possible when we work together. I sometimes sketch a concept if I feel it’s necessary to, or I put together a Pinterest board just for pose references and other ideas to help inspire myself and the model. A lot of the time, myself and sometimes even the model/other team members present end up coming up with all new ideas on the spot during the actual shoot, and some of my best images have stemmed from just that. What do you want to convey with your photographs? Something very, very personal that the viewer can possibly connect with. Or at the very least, I want people to understand that photography isn’t necessarily just selling a product, or documenting the world. Both are extremely important in their own right. But to me, photography is something very idiosyncratic and for myself, a very intimate visual representation of what goes on in my mind.

How do you think your experiences – going to school for art, living in different countries, being a part of the Flickr community, etc. – has effected your work? All of these things have immensely affected my work. I don’t think I would even be a photographer if I hadn’t grown up in Hong Kong. While I probably will never move back there, sixteen years there has taught me a lot. Not only about myself, but how other people move and perceive; how they function and how their goals are so different from each other’s. The Flickr community was like entering a whole new spectrum away from the Hong Kong one, as is the community at my college; it was like seeing entirely new colors, if that makes sense. I try to throw myself into all these different communities as a way to learn. I am a very visual person; I think a lot of us can grow more as people by observing. And by learning so many new things, I develop new methods of thinking and living and apply it to my work as much as I can.
