ROYAL ASCOT 2022 GOOD TO FIRM
2.30 RACE 1
It’s a case of all the eggs in one basket in the opening leg (2.30) of the Royal Ascot Placepot on day four as I can’t see past Mawj. If she’s half as good as she looked at Newmarket she has to be in the first three. Tiber Flow, Wings Of War and Ehraz would be my three in a desperately difficult Commonwealth Cup (3.05), and it will have to be three again in the first handicap (3.40). There has been no winner from a stall in single figures since 2008, so I’ll go with Candleford (18), Sir Rumi (17) and Contact (16). Inspiral is a favourite to take on in the Coronation Stakes (4.20) and I’m happy go with my two bets in the race, Discoveries and Prosperous Voyage. Heredia could be the proverbial Group horse in a handicap in the Sandringham (5.00), but if not it’s wide open, so I’ll add Persist, who will relish a test at the trip, and Love Interest, who shaped really nicely ay York last time.

Beautiful Aisling Havana Gold filly who showed plenty of promise with her close seconds over 5f at Sandown (good to firm) and Chelmsford (AW) last month; has shaped as though this step up in trip should suit but brings only fair form and has a lot to find on this steep rise in grade. Beautiful Eyes Made all at Ayr (good) on her debut in April before comfortably defying a penalty at Kempton (AW); ran well again when fourth of 15 in Listed race at York last time but she didn’t look entirely straightforward (hung left throughout) and has more to do now upped to 6f in this Group 3 event. Believing Made a positive start with her eyecatching second behind Mawj at Newmarket (6f, good to firm); didn’t have to match that form when 1-3 at Wolverhampton (AW) but she got the job done with plenty in hand, despite losing a lot of ground by rearing at the start; this is a very different test but she’s a promising type who is not ruled out. Cathy Come Home Out of a well-related middle-distance winner but she made a good start over 5f when scoring in smooth style at Musselburgh (good to firm; 2-1) last month; that was in a small field and this is a big rise in class but she has plenty of scope for progress on this step up in trip. Double O Sent off at 3-1 or shorter in all three runs; went close twice before a comfortable success on the step up to 6f at Pontefract (good to firm) but she didn’t really need to improve much to land that maiden and has plenty to find in this tough assignment; same connections also run Queen Olly. Elvenia Cost 225,000gns as a yearling and is out of a Listed-placed 5f-6f winner (RPR 99); didn’t have much in hand when landing a five-runner Newcastle novice (5f, AW) last month but showed a good attitude to beat a previous winner and should improve upped to this trip on second start; could be in the mix. Fully Wet 120,000gns Kodiac filly who is out of a half-sister to Group 1 winners Excelebration (triple 1m) and Lancaster Bomber (10.5f); looked inexperienced when 8-1 at Goodwood (6f, good to soft) last month but she challenged over 1f out before staying on well to beat the favourite with something in hand; looks a very useful prospect. Ibiza Love Made some promising late headway when third at Doncaster (5f, good to firm) on debut and she justified support when making all upped to 6.5f there (good) two weeks ago; has a lot more to do in this hot contest but that was a major step forward last time and she’s open to more progress back in trip. Ivory Madonna Shaped with promise when a 9-2 third at Goodwood (6f, good to soft) on her debut last month but was almost 3l behind Fully Wet in that race and needs a major leap forward to make an impact in this Group 3 event. Lady Bullet Represents a yard with an impressive strike-rate with 2yos this season and she’s played her part with wins at Doncaster (good to firm) and Ripon (good); didn’t have much trouble defying a penalty when upped to 6f last time and this well-bred filly could continue on an upward curve; dangerous in her bid to make it 3-3. Land Of Summer Finished well when a 12-1 winner at Brighton (5.3f, good to firm) on her debut in April and she was only just caught under a penalty at Kempton (6f, AW) last month; open to more progress for top yard but she needs another big step forward to make her mark in this company. Mawj Half-sister to three winners including Modern Games (7f-1m 2yo, including Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, and French 2,000 Guineas; RPR 115); showed signs of inexperience when 12-1 at Newmarket (6f, good to firm) last month but she still managed to surge almost 5l clear from Believing in the closing stages; that was an impressive debut and she recorded a striking RPR; big player. Meditate 360,000euros No Nay Never filly; made a bright start with her front-running win at the Curragh (5f, yielding) in April before justifying support in good style in a 6f Group 3 event at Naas (good) last month; travelled smoothly for a long way before finding plenty in latter race and she sets the standard on that form; strong contender for Aidan O’Brien. Miss Mai Tai Has not made an impact in her three runs, most recently when fifth of nine in the Hilary Needler at Beverley (5f) three weeks ago; goes into deeper waters on this step up in trip and she can only be watched. Powerdress £130,000 yearling; weak 9-1 for a Newmarket maiden (5f, good) in April but she gradually worked her way into contention before keeping on well for a last-gasp win; has a lot more to do after a 66-day break but that initial form has worked out really well and this step up in trip looks a good move; possibilities for yard that won this in 2015. Queen Olly Cost 300,000euros as a yearling and she kicked off her career with an emphatic win in a 6f York maiden (good; 11-4 favourite) last month; powered clear from a clear second in that race and looks an exciting prospect; shortlisted for in-form yard. She’s Hot Well-backed favourite and showed clear promise when runner-up at Kempton (5f, AW) in March; should be more streetwise on this step up in trip but she needs to find lots of improvement on this big rise in class. Sydneyarms Chelsea Ran green when 9-1 at Newbury (6.5f, good to soft) 17 days ago but that didn’t stop her scoring with something in hand from off the pace; has forecast faster ground and tougher rivals to contend with today but that was a promising start and she’s not ruled out. Aidan O’Brien’s Meditate made it 2-2 with her comfortable success in a Group 3 event at Naas and she’s strongly respected, along with Queen Olly and Fully Wet who made a deep impression with their debut wins last month. Musselburgh scorer Cathy Come Home has plenty of scope for progress upped in trip on her second start, while Lady Bullet and Powerdress also enter the reckoning. However, the vote goes to Godolphin’s MAWJ, who looked the real deal when surging almost 5l clear from subsequent winner Believing at Newmarket and recorded a useful RPR in that race at the first attempt. Meditate is feared most. [David Moon]

Hala Hala Athmani Plenty of promise over 6f last term, winning easily at Carlisle then close third in Ayr Group 3; bred for this occasion, being a half-sister to Hello Youmzain who finished third in this race in 2019 and won 6f Group 1 here in 2020; brings potential to this reappearance assignment. Miramar French challenger; showed improvement to win the Prix Sigy at Chantilly (5.5f, good; Group 3) two months ago; however, faces a stiffer task at this hotter level and will do well to follow up. Sacred Bridge Bubble was burst when disappointing favourite in the Cheveley Park Stakes (4-4 previously) and she suffered another defeat on reappearance; regained the winning thread at Cork (5.5f Listed) six weeks ago, though had little to spare; needs a personal best to win this major event. Zain Claudette Form dipped sharply in the Cheveley Park Stakes when last seen; progressive 6f filly otherwise as a 2yo, including wins in the Princess Margaret here and Lowther at York; tongue-tie now applied; may still have more to offer but this looks a demanding task on reappearance. This race looks tailor-made for EHRAZ judged on his strong-finishing effort last time and bearing in mind that he’s already a C&D winner. He should be capable of further progress and is taken to reverse Newbury placings with Tiber Flow, who still warrants respect on form but needs to prove he’s effective in headgear (he now goes in first-time cheekpieces). Second choice is Go Bears Go, who has a good record here and whose Sandy Lane effort can be marked up. Perfect Power (third choice) holds major claims returned to sprinting, El Caballo is progressing well, Twilight Jet recorded a big figure on his reappearance and Slipstream is an intriguing US raider.[Steve Boow]

Only six go in the King Edward VII (5.35), but while Changingoftheguard has much the best form, Ottoman Fleet looked potentially very good when recovering from a bad stumble to win the Fairway Stakes, and I fully expect him to make the first two at least.

Boonie Has raced only at 5f; finished third in the Windsor Castle here last year; scored at Nottingham two starts ago (reappearance); near the bottom of this pack on ratings and doesn’t seem to be crying out for a stiff 6f. Cadamosto Ballydoyle colt; close fourth in the Norfolk here 12 months ago but no further progress, most recently fifth to Tiber Flow at Newbury; first-time blinkers need to prompt a much bigger effort on the figures. Ehraz Has raced only on good/firmer; emphatic C&D winner as a 2yo; seemed to need the run here (race won by Go Bears Go) on reappearance, then nearly collared Tiber Flow in 6f Listed event at Newbury where finishing very strongly and giving the impression he’ll be well suited by this fast-pace, big-field scenario back at Ascot; respected with further improvement on the cards. El Caballo Highly progressive colt who narrowly beat Tiber Flow at Newcastle on Good Friday, taking AW record to 4-4; subsequently held on by a neck from Flaming Rib in the Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock (6f, good; Group 2), taking turf record to 2-3; gritty rather than impressive in those last two performances but keeps getting the job done; major player. Flaming Rib Last six starts over sprint distances have resulted in form figures of 111112, including 6f Listed win at Doncaster; neck second to El Caballo in Haydock Group 2 most recently, showing further improvement; brings a solid profile and should go well again. Gis A Sub Good second in last year’s Gimcrack; has not repeated that form in three runs since, latest at Haydock where he was behind some of these rivals; first-time headgear needs to have major effect. Go Bears Go Smart colt who has a consistent record over sprint trips and form figures of 121 at Ascot, including a good effort (head behind Perfect Power) in last year’s Norfolk; made all in the Commonwealth Cup Trial back here (good to firm) in April, then wasn’t disgraced in the Sandy Lane considering he stumbled badly at the start; solid contender. Hierarchy Form dipped at Newbury last month, finishing behind several of these opponents; consistent otherwise and ran creditably behind Go Bears Go here in April; however, needs improvement to land this big prize. Perfect Power Productive 2yo campaign included wins in the Norfolk here (on fast ground), the Morny and Middle Park; justified favouritism upped to 7f in the Greenham on reappearance, then failed to convince with stamina over 1m in the 2,000 Guineas (midfield); progressive at sprint trips and has plenty of class; big player returned to sprinting and this looks an ideal race for him. Rizg Thrice-raced colt who ran well at Newbury most recently, finishing fourth to Tiber Flow; still unexposed but he’s well down this pack on ratings; first-time headgear needs to prompt a much bigger figure. Sam Maximus Peak 2yo effort (for Tom Dascombe) came in the July Stakes, finishing third; filled that position (behind Tiber Flow and Ehraz) at Newbury on debut for new yard; useful sort but needs to improve. Slipstream Improving US colt who ran creditably in Breeders’ Cup race at Del Mar (1m) on final 2yo start; scored at Keeneland (5.5f, good; Listed) in April, taking record to 3-6 and adding to his Grade 3 win (6f) last October; the first of two interesting runners on the card for Christophe Clement. Tiber Flow Ties in closely with two of today’s main players, as he nearly beat El Caballo at Newcastle in April then just clung on from the fast-finishing Ehraz at Newbury (6f Listed; turf debut) last month; progressive colt whose record is now 4-5; sire Caravaggio won this contest in 2017; major contender provided he’s effective in first-time headgear. Twilight Jet Finished behind Perfect Power and Go Bears Go in some major events last season but has improved steadily with racing and won the Cornwallis (5f) in October; made all for 3l success in Group 3 at Naas (6f, good) on reappearance and looks set for a productive 3yo campaign; his new rating is very respectable. Wings Of War Narrowly beat Hierarchy in last year’s Mill Reef; last of four (below best) in the Commonwealth Cup Trial on reappearance but consistent otherwise; bounced back (with cheekpieces applied) at Haydock last time, finishing third behind El Caballo and Flaming Rib; looks set to go well again. Flotus Good second in the Cheveley Park Stakes on final 2yo start; below that form in two Listed contests this season, latest at Haydock where she went close but was beaten by a much lower-rated filly; bit to prove.

Ever Present Bumper winner who switched to Flat rules last year with three wins and a close second from four attempts (the first on good to firm, rest on good); first three of those Flat runs were over 1m7f/2m but he showed smart form when dropped to 1m5f for a major 23-runner handicap at Leopardstown on final outing, having to come from some way back from wide draw but taking it with a strong finish; could easily have more to offer and is highly respected. Chichester Ran right away with 12-runner race at Ayr (1m2f, good to firm) in September but he is 15lb higher today; close third in Listed race at Kempton (1m2f, AW) on reappearance was good, but he never figured when 25-1 in a 1m1f Group 3 at Newmarket in April; unraced beyond an extended 1m2f but brother Jamil won up to 1m4f on Flat; needs to resume progress. Mashhoor 1-5 for Sir Michael Stoute, the win on good to firm; close fourth of 17 in handicap at Cork on return for new connections and he improved on that when winning a 19-runner race at the Curragh (1m2f, good to yielding) four weeks ago; fair chance he’ll stay 1m4f and although it remains to be seen whether he’s worth this higher mark, there’s no denying he did it well last time. Kenzai Warrior Not proven on fast ground (one attempt as 3yo); lightly raced 5yo who’s been useful at his best for the last four seasons, close second of three in a conditions stakes at Wolverhampton (9.4f, AW) in January when last seen; has tried 1m2f twice but this trip is something new and he probably needs to improve significantly for it. Cap Francais Dropped down the weights last term and reappeared with a win at Newmarket (1m1f) this April; finished well when second off this mark at Chester (1m2f, good to soft; acts on good to firm) six days later but disappointed at Epsom two weeks ago; unraced over this sort of trip since 2019. Trawlerman Hammered a notable rival in 1m4f Pontefract maiden (good to firm) but never dangerous in the Sandown Classic Trial (1m2f) later last April and that was the last sight of him as a 3yo; gelded and reappeared with 1m2f handicap win at Chelmsford (1m2f, AW) two months ago, knuckling down well; up 5lb but still promises to be better than that, particularly now back up in trip. Kelly’s Dino His eight wins include a C&D contest in 2018 (sole visit here) and major 17-runner handicap at Haydock in July 2019, both 1m4f on good to firm; had only two races in 2020 and missed 2021, before well beaten at Haydock (weakened over 2f out) three weeks ago, so even though he’s 8lb below his last winning mark, it’s hard to be confident that enough ability remains. Just Fine Acts on good to firm; had a mixed season in handicaps last year; reappearance at York last month saw his second attempt at 1m4f (first came when below form at Royal Ascot 2021) and he ran creditably in third of 11, coming from the rear after a slow start; has same mark today and could have come on from that run. Moktasaab Big start for new connections when he won a 20-runner race at Newbury (1m2f, good) and six-runner race at Goodwood (1m2f, good to firm); travelled strongly and impressed with the way he did it but he was then all at sea at Epsom two weeks ago when bidding for the hat-trick; this trip (tried once in 2021, below form) poses a question but he still looks on a winning mark. Stay Well Maiden win came on good to firm; 1m4f handicap winner last summer who improved in two runs on Kempton Polytrack before carrying that form over to the Zetland Gold Cup at Redcar (1m2f, good) 15 days ago when always-prominent second of ten; trainer has a superb record in this race, including with four wins, the latest of which was last year. Brilliant Light Last of 15 over 1m6f at this meeting last year; mixed form since but winning at Ripon (1m2f, good to firm) on latest outing was up with his best; back up 4lb but returning to 1m4f isn’t a problem and he’s capable of being seriously involved.
