SUPERB ACTION A

Bryony all set for ‘awesome’ Arabian Races

B

RYONY FROST, the golden girl of the last jumps season, will bid to shine at another discipline when she takes part in the Dubai International Arabian Races at Newbury Racecourse tomorrow. During a stellar winter season Frost, 24, rode 50 winners to claim the conditional jockeys’ championship for the first time, including landing a breakthrough victory at the Cheltenham Festival. She was rarely out of the spotlight, establishing herself as one of the most popular riders in the sport with a succession of high-profile wins which included four on Frodon, culminating in a sensational victory in the Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham in March, the first time a female rider had secured a Grade 1 victory over jumps at the festival. Frost is new to riding Arabians but has grasped with both hands the opportunity to compete at Newbury’s prestigious fixture, staged under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and UAE Minister of Finance. She has had only a handful of rides on the Flat but has already

donned Sheikh Hamdan’s Shadwell silks when finishing third in an Arabian race at Bath this month and is looking forward to tomorrow’s assignment. “The Dubai International Arabian Races is an awesome day out with top-class racing and loads of entertainment for all the family,” she said. “I’m really looking forward to being part of it. “Riding Arabians competitively for the first time will be a challenge but I’ve had lots of help and advice from the trainer James Owen and Richard Hills and I can’t wait. “Arabians are real characters, they’re very intelligent and really switched on. You have to take them through their gears slowly and make sure you say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ but once you get them there they really start to roll. “It will be a real honour to step out in the famous blue and white silks of HH Sheikh Hamdan and I’m thrilled to have been invited to ride.” Bryony has two rides tomorrow: Farhaa in the first race and Ameed in the second race, both for James Owen and Shadwell. ARABIAN RACING EXPERT WE HAVE high quality across the board on tomorrow’s card as the 73 runners have collected 24 Pattern races between them. It a truly international event, with the world’s highest-rated filly of 2018 Al Shamoos, who aims to win her third Group 1 in the Shadwell Arabian Stallions Hatta International. In the following race, Gazwan, who has won six Group 1 prizes, tries to reclaim his Shadwell Dubai International crown, having captured the race in 2015. He was the world’s joint top-rated colt of 2018 and has amassed almost £7million in prizemoney during his career. These two superstars are likely to be difficult to beat.

2.10 His Highness Sheikh Hamdan has won eight of the 13 runnings of this and he fields five this time. 3.45 Some 14 of the last 17 winners have been trained in France. There is one French-trained runner this year, Maravilla Al Maury. She is trained by Didier Guillemin and will be ridden by Olivier Peslier who won all four Group races here last year. 4.55 Four-year-olds have the best record, winning 15 of 35 runnings. There is one four-year-old this time, Melabi. He runs in the colours of Al Shaqab Racing and is trained by Thomas Fourcy who has had three Group One winners in Britain. 6.00 Five-year-olds have the best record, winning seven of 18 including six of the last 11. There are three fiveyear olds this year, Arewn Forta, Bin Al Reeh and Kayack.

Great Dubai International Arabian Raceday winners No Risk Al Maury Shadwell Dubai International 2008 Although he won the first race staged at Meydan in 2010, No Risk Al Maury

was a regular in Britain, winning 13 races including three times on Dubai International Arabian Raceday. His greatest victory was his second in the Shadwell Dubai International, beating a subsequent winner of the race in Jaafer. Perfectly produced by Richard Hills, he showed a customary turn of foot to put the race to bed. Muraaqib (right) Shadwell Dubai International 2016 Possibly the best Arabian bred by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan, he has recorded seven Group One victories. The third came here in 2016. Left in front a long way out he was unable to use his potent gear change, idling

up the straight but still sauntering to an easy success. Arguably the greatest Arabian miler of all time, it is hoped we see him on the track again soon. Jamaayil Emirates Premier Handicap 2016 One of the year’s most competitive handicaps was turned into a procession as Jamaayil drew clear from a host of progressive young rivals. The winning margin of 12 lengths could have been doubled if jockey Dane O’Neill had wanted. Al Mouhannad Jebel Ali Zaabeel International 2013 The Royal Cavalry of Oman enjoyed their first Group 1 win in Britain when Al Mouhannad registered the first of three victories in this race in 2013 to ignite joyous scenes in the winner’s enclosure.

What I love about Arabian racing . . . I admire their versatility and toughness and the fact we get to see so many, whether Group horses or handicappers, come back year after year. In the final race tomorrow, one of the horses will be running in the race for the sixth year in a row. My favourite race of the year is the staying handicap, a race used as a stepping stone to Group 1 glory, it has had plenty of close finishes. It is the race that takes us back to the roots and strength of the Arabian breed, stamina. Nokomys Emirates Hatta International 2010 Having been second in two runnings, Nokomys deservedly gained her only Group 1 success on her final start. In a great battle with Al Anqa the pair eyeballed each other all the way to the line, with Nokomys just getting her head down at the right time to win by a short head. It will be remembered as one of the greatest finishes at this meeting.
