An auction you simply cannot afford to miss
TH Keeneland September Yearling Sale is an auction you simply must attend if winning Grade Group 1 races around the world is something you are trying to achieve. This is far from mere marketing spin. It is a fact supported by the results and, even at this relatively early stage of 2 1 , it is hard to argue against it. Some 1 top-level scorers worldwide were purchased at this sale. At home, the likes of Monomoy Girl, Good Magic and Carrick are all graduates as, of course, was the mighty Triple Crown hero Justify. The success extends far beyond the borders of the US though. In Britain, oaring Lion has won the clipse and Juddmonte International, while Hawkbill carried the Godolphin blue to glory in Dubai. Meanwhile, in Japan, Mo u Ascot has made his mark. For those reasons and many more besides, the biggest and the best make their way to Lexington once again, hoping
to find their next superstar produced in the great American traditions of so many before them. We hope this special acing ost Bloodstock supplement will help guide you through another mammoth edition of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. I will seek to whet your appetite with a look back at the remarkable career of Justify, while Michele MacDonald takes a look at the “formidable” Taylor Made army of yearlings on offer. Michele also runs the rule over the first-season sire offerings, while Lewis Lesbirel chats to Colin Mc ntee, who is consigning yearlings for the first time under his Ballysax Bloodstock banner. All of that, plus the supplement carries details of siblings to stakes winners catalogued and pinhooks from the premier sessions. We wish all involved the very best of luck.

O BO OW and slightly alter a well-worn cliche, six months is a long time in racing. A very long time. Cast your mind back, way back, all the way to March 2 1 when a son of the great Scat Daddy was all the rage to win the Kentucky Derby – but not the one who now springs straight to mind. The colt in question was Mendelssohn, who had just turned the UA Derby at Meydan into a procession. It is no exaggeration to say that his 1 -and-a-half-length victory was one of the most strikingly impressive visual achievements in many years. Here was a horse who had finished second in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes on Newmarket’s turf as a juvenile and who appeared not only to have developed impressively from two to three physically but found his true calling on the dirt. Mendelssohn had clearly always been an impressive type, demonstrated to no
greater effect than when MV Magnier parted with 3 million at the 2 1 Keeneland September Yearling Sale to buy him from the draft of Clarkland Farm. He had the yearling looks, the pedigree and ever more so the racing CV to be considered one of the world’s most important three-year-old colts. And so it transpired that a son of Scat Daddy did indeed go on to win not only the Kentucky Derby, but the Triple Crown. It was not, of course, the runaway Meydan scorer though. The colt who would etch his name into racing folklore had made his debut only a
little over a month prior to Mendelssohn’s Dubai success. Three weeks before the UA Derby, a Bob Baffert-trained colt named Justify made it two wins from two when landing an allowance optional claiming contest over a mile at Santa Anita. Things were about to go into overdrive. Contesting a stakes race for the first time, Justify spreadeagled the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby field, handing Bolt D’Oro, already a multiple elite-level scorer and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile place-getter, a GG o e page

KEENELAND SEPTEMBER YEARLING SALE GGFrom page three-length beating. His stunning stride caught the eye and Baffert whet the appetite further by telling reporters the inexperienced star-in-waiting was “still learning to run”. Jockey Mike Smith was
similarly in no mood to talk down the hype and said, presciently as it turned out “What you’re seeing right now is just raw talent. “If he moves forward off this race, which he should, it’s even kind of scary to think about.”
Scary, perhaps. Thrilling no doubt. The show rolled east to Churchill Downs and on a foul day a bona-fide superstar emerged out of the pouring rain. As Mendelssohn fluffed his lines, his first experience of
racing in America a traumatic one, Justify was sensational – a steering job, in the assessment of Smith. Despite only a third of the Triple Crown trail being complete, Baffert was reaching to the top shelf for superlatives, comparing his
charge with another modern sporting great. “He broke clean, and I knew that he wasn’t going to lay down,” said the trainer. “It’s like having LeBron James on your team, you’d better win a championship with him.”
A famous Nike poster featuring James once stated “We are all witnesses.” Unfortunately, when Justify pitched up at imlico for the second leg of the Triple Crown, it was not too easy to witness. The 2 1 reakness Stakes

was contested under the cover of a thick mist but once again the elements proved no barrier to success for Justify, showing tremendous determination to go along with his undoubted class as he repelled the sustained
challenge of his talented old rival Good Magic to position himself on the brink of history. Smith proclaimed himself “blessed to be on a horse with this much talent” after the reakness and, mercifully,
the racing gods blessed us with a clearer day when the Belmont Stakes soon rolled around. ven at this stage it was still hard to fathom. Here was Justify, who only 111 days earlier had made his first ever
appearance on the racetrack, now presented with the opportunity to join 12 of the most famous names in the history of thoroughbred racing. Once again he broke well and if truth be told the race
was over at the first turn as Justify strode to the front. His rivals could barely lay a finger on his beautiful chestnut physique as he sauntered into the history books and, as it would ultimately play out, off the stage forever.
“He’s so gifted,” said Smith. “He’s sent from heaven. He’s an ama ing horse. I can’t describe the emotions going through my body right now.” For even the least religious among us, heaven sent is GG o e page

KEENELAND SEPTEMBER YEARLING SALE Michele MacDonald runs the rule over the stallions represented by their first crops at Keeneland this September
L
D by the first offspring of a Triple Crown winner to enter the yearling marketplace since the initial sons and daughters of Affirmed debuted in 1 2, freshman stallions are expected to make a dramatic impact throughout the nearly two-week Keeneland September Yearling Sale. American haroah, who swept through the Kentucky Derby, reakness and Belmont Stakes as well as the Breeders’ Cup Classic in 2 1 to reign as a definitive champion in both seasons he raced, has already earned ardent enthusiasm from buyers with his offspring sold at other venues. Through mid-August, 1 American haroah yearlings auctioned worldwide had averaged an eye-popping 2 ,33 . Keeneland has catalogued 1 American haroah colts and fillies, and the group clearly meets a high standard of quality as are included in the select, four-session Book 1. But while American haroah is undeniably the superstar among young stallions, this year’s September sale is overflowing with the offspring of others whose stud careers are just beginning but who already are demonstrating their own clout in the auction ring. Altogether, 3 of the 21 stallions represented in the entire sale are freshmen, and their combined 1, 3 yearlings make up 22. per cent of the auction’s , 3 catalogue entries. Among the other notable first-year stallions with progeny up for auction are Breeders’ Cup winners Bayern, who has yearlings, Liam’s Map 2 and Karakontie . Belmont Stakes winners alace Malice, with 3 yearlings, and Tonalist, , also are among the promising young sires of the future. Additional Grade 1 winners with members of their first crops on parade during Book 1 include Honor Code, who has yearlings catalogued Carpe Diem, 2 Constitution, Lea, 3 and Mr Speaker, 31. Keeneland officials believe the bright potential of this group of young stallions will help generate special interest in this edition of September sale, which is the world’s largest auction of yearlings. “I think you’d have to go back a good way to equal the kind of optimism and anticipation folks have for the yearlings offered from the freshman-sired crop,” said Bob lliston, Keeneland vice president of racing and sales. “There’s only been a limited number of the yearlings sold so

far, but just in those numbers we’re up to nine different freshman sires whose progeny have averaged in excess of 1 , . It’s really impressive. “These are some well bred, incredibly talented horses who have been supported tremendously by the breeding community,” he added of the first-year stallions. Book 1, which typically requires a strong physical to go along with an electric catalogue page, features 1 2 yearlings – equivalent to 1 . per cent of the total of catalogued for the four headline sessions – by first-year stallions, which underlines lliston’s point. There are any number of yearlings with deep female families sired by the young stallions in Book 1, which fittingly opens with an American Pharoah filly produced by the British Group 3-placed Halling mare Halljoy as hip 1. Hip 63 will undoubtedly draw a crowd of lookers. The American haroah filly, bred by Capital Bloodstock and consigned by aton Sales, is a half sister to twice champion Songbird, who was sold at Fasig-Tipton last November to Mandy ope for . million. Some of the other notable American haroah offspring in the sale include hip 298, a
half-brother to Breeders’ Cup Classic winner and . million earner Mucho Macho Man hip 65 , a half-sister to champion and Kentucky Derby and reakness winner I’ll Have Another hip 208, a half-brother to champion sprinter oints Offthebench and hip 69 a colt out of Tapit’s Grade 1-winning daughter Joyful Victory. Coolmore, which stands American haroah at its Ashford Stud for a private fee after beginning his career at 2 , while offering two-for-one incentives to some breeders, has taken a very active role in shaping the early stages of his career. Not only has Coolmore bred many outstanding mares to the son of ioneerof the Nile, the operation’s MV Magnier has actively sought out the best at auction, buying a pair of yearling colts, including the half-brother to Caravaggio, for 1m apiece, in addition to several others. Magnier proclaimed during the Arqana Deauville sale that American haroah could “have a transforming impact on uropean bloodlines”, following the likes of Northern Dancer, Danehill and Sadler’s Wells, who were all bred in
North America. And, of course, hopes are that American haroah will dominate the American sport if his offspring are as talented as he was on the track. Some of the American haroah yearlings who Coolmore bred will be offered at the September sale. They include hip 562, a filly out of Irish high-weight Virginia Waters, by Kingmambo, who is in the Four Star Sales consignment. Hip 210, offered by Gainesway, is a filly out of Galileo’s daughter Mohini and thus a granddaughter of French champion Denebola and great-granddaughter of another French champion, Coup De Genie, a sister to Machiavellian. Following American haroah, the next

leading American-based first-year sire of sale yearlings this year is Honor ode, the multiple Grade 1-winning son of A. . Indy who stands at Lane’s nd for , . His 13 yearlings reported sold have , with a son averaged 2 , produced by Grade 1 winner Hollywood Story bringing a final bid of , from C K Stable at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga selected sale. Some of the particularly notable Honor Code yearlings at Keeneland include hip 688, a half-brother to champion ia Antonia in the Mill idge Sales consignment hip 2 3, a colt out of Grade 1 winner Nereid, by ock Hard Ten hip 5 9, a half-brother to Grade 1 winner Moonshine 708, a Memories and hip 708 half-brother to Grade 1 winner Finnegans Wake and stakes winner uca. The catalogue’s pedigree power and robust market conditions have created an ideal scenario in which the freshman sale sires can shine at what is expected to be a vibrant auction, lliston said. Buyers Honor ode has yearlings catalogued
now seem more willing than they were in the immediate aftermath of the global economic crisis to take a chance on unproven but top-quality stallions. “Buyers have a right to be optimistic and aggressive [about the first-year stallions] because the breeders are telling them, ‘We love these stallions. Look at the mare strength we are putting against them’,” llison said. “The breeding community is optimistic about them and they’re sending a message to the buying community – we’re bringing you the goods. ‘It’s hard for me to control my enthusiasm,” he added in looking forward to the sale while noting generally upbeat market forces. “I have to be guarded because I don’t want to jinx it. But the yearling market has been tremendous so far. “Last year the weanling market was solid and the pinhooking and two-year-old season was good. And the economy is really good in the States.” One of the first-year sires who breeders have substantially backed is arpe iem, who has the second highest number of yearlings catalogued for the sale, ranking behind only American haroah, with 2. Offspring by Carpe Diem, a multiple Grade 1 winner by Giant’s Causeway who stands for 2 , at WinStar Farm, include hip 573, a half-brother to Breeders’ Cup winner New Money Honey out of a sister to Any Given Saturday and hip 7 3, a colt out of champion Caressing who is a half-brother to champion West Coast. ach of the first-year stallions seems to have some particularly notable offspring based on catalogue pages. Palace alice, a versatile son of Curlin who was brilliant from a mile to a mile and a half and who stands at Three Chimneys Farm for 2 , , has a colt in Book 2, hip 1358, who is a half-brother to America’s leading three-year-old filly, Kentucky Oaks winner Monomoy Girl. iam s ap, another resident of Lane’s nd, seems to be one of the young stallions who has already garnered a lot of attention from buyers and sellers. The son of Unbridled’s Song, who stands for a fee of 2 , , has 1 yearlings in Book 1, including hip 9 , a half-brother to Grade 1 winner Sam’s Sister, and hip 567, a half-brother to Grade 1 winner The Big Beast. onstitution, WinStar’s

Tonalist began his stud career at a fee of , and currently stands for 2 , . While the high-profile young stallions with do ens of offspring in the sale are guaranteed the most attention, there are others worthy of noting as well. September auction, lliston suggested it is analogous to the iconic Harrods department store at Christmas time, with a lavish display of anything buyers could want. “The September yearling sale is the single place where, whatever the type of horse you’re looking for – sprinters, milers, stayers, fillies, colts, grass, dirt – there’s something for everyone,” lliston said. “And that just doesn’t happen anywhere else in the world.”

KEENELAND SEPTEMBER YEARLING SALE Michele MacDonald talks to Mark Taylor of perennial leading vendor Taylor Made Sales Agency
T
H Y are nothing less than a formidable army. Year after year their onslaught conquers American sales with literally hundreds of horses and people joined in a force greater than any other worldwide as they ignite bloodstock transactions worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Taylor Made Sales Agency, founded in 1 by the then-teenaged sons of Gainesway Farm manager Joe Taylor and a partner, has evolved into virtually its own market within the thoroughbred public sales arena and is poised for another landmark Keeneland September Yearling Sale. With 2 representatives catalogued, Taylor Made resumes its usual position at the top of the September sale chain of consignors, and while that number would seem impossible for others to handle, the Taylors have done this so many times they see only the scope of the opportunity and not the challenge. “Those numbers seem staggering from the outside, but we’re built to handle that,” says Mark Taylor, vice-president of marketing and public sales operations for the family business. “There were times back when the foal crop was higher, back in the early 2 s, that we had closer to yearlings in September. “We’ve got such an awesome team and everybody knows their role – we’re very process driven. You have to have a military-type organisation to run it,” Taylor adds of what it takes to manage such a mass of horses over 13 days of selling. “That’s just the way we’re built.” Taylor Made enters this September sale on a roll after ending the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select auction as the No. 1 consignor by gross and the seller of the sale-topping Medaglia D’Oro colt, which marked the operation’s th auction leader since 1 . Another huge landmark was reached in July when Catholic Boy became the 1 th Grade Group 1 winner consigned and or raised by Taylor Made. On top of this stream of highs, general market conditions and buyer enthusiasm appear to be hot, and Taylor can’t help but be bullish. “I think it’s going to be a blockbuster year and it’s going to be fun to watch it unfold,”
‘The market is really good right now and we’re coming off the excitement of a Triple Crown winner and there’s a lot of momentum’
Taylor says in anticipating the September sale. “The market is really good right now and we’re coming off the excitement of a Triple Crown winner and there’s a lot of momentum.” It’s impossible to overstate the influence of Taylor Made on the September sale. During the 1 previous auctions conducted this millennium, Taylor Made has led all consignors by gross 13 times, including the last three September auctions, and has ranked second on the other five occasions. With the September sale just one of the premier auctions at which Taylor Made is a force, it is even more stunning to note that the agency has sold , horses for more than million over the last 1 years just at Keeneland. Taylor estimated approximately 2 full- and part-time staff will be involved with Taylor Made during the September sale, handling the horses and, just as importantly, guiding both buying and selling customers through the process that can change fortunes. The Taylors’ unique approach to sales is partly a result of what the brothers often joke was their parents’ “human resources plan”. “They just kept having kids until all the jobs were covered,” says Taylor, who was only seven when Taylor Made was created. When the brothers, including Taylor Made president Duncan Taylor, who was 1 when he spearheaded the founding of the operation as a service provider to owners keeping mares in Kentucky, couldn’t handle all the business coming their way, they came up with a different approach. “I remember there was a September sale and I was
calling Duncan and saying, ‘I literally have a line of customers waiting outside my little tack room office that is 1 -deep and they’re all waiting to talk to me. Can you come up here and help me’ ” Mark Taylor says. “At that point we knew we had to come up with a new strategy.” After discussions with advisers, the Taylors decided to innovate and designate account managers for their clients, a practice
ar aylor very single client has a dedicated account manager assigned to them he clients then have one-on-one attention all the way through the sales process
virtually unknown in thoroughbred sales at the time, as Taylor recalls. “I see the term ‘account manager’ used a lot now, but that was a term that sounded really foreign to the horse business when my brother Duncan and one of our business consultants came up with the whole concept of it, probably almost 2 years ago,” he says. “Our business
was growing very fast and the Taylors were not only owners, but we were customer service people. We started to feel the pull at the seams from our growth. “What we did is we put in a system where every single client has a dedicated account manager assigned to them. We don’t let our account managers get too many people who they represent we put caps on that so the managers have time for everyone. “The clients then have one-on-one attention all the way through the sales process. And it gets the Taylors out of the level of doing a ton of the detail work. “What we bring to the equation is decades of market knowledge, and we’re with our customers and with our team members guiding them about what a reserve price should be or relating that we’ve noticed a particular shopping group is looking at this filly or colt.” What is particularly noteworthy is the identity of the clients Taylor Made serves. Most of the big names who have bought and sold horses in North America have worked with the Taylors at one time or another, and this year’s Taylor Made September draft underlines that fact. Among the many large and small breeders consigning yearlings with Taylor Made are are names such as Coolmore, Stonestreet, WinStar, Three Chimneys, SF Bloodstock, Don Alberto,
Joseph Allen, Marie Jones, Ken and Sarah amsey, in Oak Stud, Siena Farms and Breeders’ Cup chairman Fred Hertrich and his partners.
W
ITH these clients and many more, and with yearlings including some bred or co-bred by the Taylor family and spanning every range right down to those in the last book of the 13-day sale, it’s not surprising the consignment offers just about anything a buyer could want. Taylor Made has consigned 1 horses to Book 1 alone. The sire power in the consignment is illustrated by 1 sons and daughters of American haroah, 23 by Into Mischief, 1 by Uncle Mo, ten by Medaglia D’Oro, seven by Curlin, and four each by Tapit and War Front. Just as significantly, this year’s overall group is highly rated on conformation. “My brother Frank looks at every horse on Taylor Made every month – that’s part of his job. And he’s been saying for a long time that he thought this was the best crop of yearlings we’ve raised in a number of years, just by overall quality,” Taylor says. There are too many to list all of the consignment’s special yearlings, but one who would stand out on any list is hip 327, the brother to 2 1 Horse of the Year and 13. m earner Gun unner. The bay Candy ide colt was bred by Three Chimneys Farm. “He’s very exciting,” Taylor says. “This horse just keeps getting better and better and better. He’s going to be really nice.”

“We’re always looking for ways to synergise with people,” he adds. “We look for ways we can add our strengths as an organisation to their strengths and get really good results. I think that’s the reason why we’re able to sell for so many of the top breeders in central Kentucky.”

Another standout is hip 203, a Tapit filly who is a half-sister to Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Liam’s Map as well as Breeders’ Cup Juvenile runner-up and young Taylor Made stallion Not This Time and stakes winner Taylor S. “It’s been a total blessing to have the mare [Grade 3 winner Miss Macy Sue, by Trippi] here on the farm for the Albaugh Family Stables. She’s one of those who every year is going to have, if not the best yearling on the farm, one of the top

three or four best yearlings on the farm. And this filly is really special. She’s got the pedigree, she’s got the physical, and she’s going to bring as much money as a filly can bring, I think. She’s just really the whole package,” Taylor says. He continues on to point out hip 857, a Tapit colt out of Grade 1 winner Dream Of Summer and a half-brother to Grade 1 winner and sire Creative Cause, multiple Grade 2 winner Destin and
recent stakes winner Vexatious. “We recruited Dream Of Summer off the track to come to Taylor Made, and we’ve had her here her whole broodmare life. She’s another one kind of like Miss Macy Sue – she’s a ‘can’t miss’ kind of mare,” Taylor says, adding that James Weigel, who bred the colt with the Tapit Syndicate, owns only that single mare. Hip 516 in the consignment, a War Front filly bred by a Coolmore
partnership, is out of Irish high-weight Together, by Galileo, and is a sister to stakes-placed Battle Of Jericho. Taylor says Siena Farms’ yearlings are particularly excellent this year, describing hip 622, a Curlin filly out of Graded winner Alaura Michele, by Arch, as “a real beauty”. For Stonestreet, Taylor Made has several strong prospects, including hip 899, a Medaglia D’Oro colt who is a half-brother to Breeders’ Cup
Distaff winner Stopchargingmaria. “The thing about Taylor Made that helps us is that we’re like a department store. You come to Taylor Made and you can get all the best brands,” Taylor says. “If you look at the leading breeders in the country, a huge percentage of those leading breeders sell with Taylor Made and that’s why we’re blessed.
LTHOUGH Taylor is somewhat concerned about a change in format for Book 1 that he hopes will not cause some buyers to skip the first four days because they imagine those sessions will be as expensive, on average, as was the single-session Book 1 last year, he has no other qualms about September. “I think it’s going to be a great sale. We’re looking forward to it and we’re excited,” he says.

KEENELAND SEPTEMBER YEARLING SALE Lewis Lesbirel talks to Irish native Carl McEntee, who sits at the helm of upwardly mobile sales vendor Ballysax Bloodstock
F
AMILY, whether that be human or equine, is undoubtedly the key ingredient to the successful formula that Ballysax Bloodstock curator Carl Mc ntee has cooked up over the last few years. Born in Kildare in 1 , Mc ntee has recently opted to go down the solo consignment route after serving in positions at several stud farms, and is set to arrive at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale armed with a battalion of horses under the newly-formed Ballysax umbrella. Arguably the best way to summarise his predisposition for the sport of horseracing would be through a comparison with a horse going through the sales ring. His page would read something like ‘Globetrotting, well-related colt who boasts a deep pedigree, particularly on his sire’s side’. That strength in the male line comes predominantly from his late father hillip, a former champion apprentice turned trainer who has exerted a massive influence on Mc ntee’s life and career. Carl’s three brothers also work in various facets of the industry, while his wife achel, whom he met when she was studying biology at the University of Kentucky, is an integral member of the Ballysax Bloodstock team. “My wife has sort of become a horse person by osmosis. It’s all I bloody talk about so she’s been forced to like it,” says Mc ntee. “It’s a true passion for our family, but it was a case of I always found horses to be a little bit more trustworthy than people. Horses generally tell you how they feel quite quickly, so you never have to second guess their frame of mind. “Animals and hard work was just something that our father instilled in us and we were very grateful for that. Dad was obviously a great horseman but I’m not sure he was the best businessman in the world, so hopefully I didn’t get that acumen from him. “We grew up loving horses but also loving challenges.” One such challenge came in the most tragic of circumstances, the death of his father hil in 1 . “My father passed away during my time doing the nglish National Stud course, and emotionally I wasn’t ready to go home and live where he

lived,” he recalls. “I found that quite hard, so I moved to America.” In the wake of that instrumental move Stateside, Mc ntee now proudly boasts a glittering CV, which includes time as a farm manager, general manager, and director at stud farms such as aragon, Northview and Ghost idge. Having originally accumulated most of his knowledge of foals, yearlings and stallions during a three-year stint working for Darley, his most recent capacity before going it alone was with Darby Dan Farm as director of sales and bloodstock. Mc ntee says “My wife dropped me off at the Keeneland November sale and she said, ‘Look, if there’s a job that meant we could come home to Kentucky, I’d like to do so’. Within five minutes of getting out of the car obert Hammond from Darby Dan came up to me and said, ‘How would you feel about joining as director of sales’ “It was quite wild that five minutes after having the conversation with my wife I was getting offered a job, so I felt that was somewhat divine intervention.” In Mc ntee’s first year with the Kentucky outfit he recruited a race filly who subsequently sold for 2.3 million, and after moving Darby Dan into the top 1 consignors nationally, Mc ntee left to begin his new venture as head of his own company – Ballysax Bloodstock. “The people at Darby Dan are wonderful,” he says. “Mr hillips is one of the truest gentlemen in this sport, a wonderful man. I was quite privileged to work with him. “I have to be challenged or I find life somewhat disinteresting. I didn’t move to the US just to do okay. I moved here to live the American dream essentially, to buy your own farm and start your own business and see if you can make it on your own. “I was fortunate enough that, with the support of some long-standing clients from ennsylvania and some newer friends, they gave me the confidence that I could start my own company. “I was always concerned about how I would teach a work ethic to my children, as when you work for people it’s very hard to take your kids to

work. Now I take them with me. My youngest, Finley, did a 12 -mile road trip with me last month, we went to three different farms and looked at horses. My daughter also loves to go racing.” After confessing that his children were one of the deciding factors in his choice to go it alone, Mc ntee recalls a defining moment from his first sale as a solo consignor at Fasig-Tipton this year. “We went and set everything up before any of the guys got there the day before,” he says. “If nothing else happens in my life, to have been able to see my wife and three children working together as a family, I’d be just fine. That was a very special moment. I don’t know another way to do it other than get my family involved.” vidence of that perspective permeates right the way through Mc ntee’s Ballysax operation. As a youngster, his dad ran a yard in Ballysax. The lettering of his company name is written using the font Meath, the county in which his dad is from, and the celtic cross logo is the same cross from his dad’s graveyard. A real homage to his late father. To top it off, Mc ntee was a bid-spotter at Tattersalls aged
1 and wrote down the name Ballysax Bloodstock while sat in the lunchroom. Twenty-three years later it has come to fruition and he heads into one of the world’s biggest sales next month with a string that makes plenty of appeal on paper.
I
F HAVING your first Keeneland draft as a solo operator was not enough, Mc ntee also has the added pressure of kick-starting the , 3 -strong catalogue with the very first horse through the ring, an American haroah filly out of the Group 3-placed mare Halljoy. Most consignors would see that as a daunting prospect, but any real hint of negativity is quashed by that innate thirst for a challenge. He says “She’s a really interesting filly as she’s got a massive uropean family. I bought the mare for my client from Clive Brittain’s yard. There’s a huge influx of uropean, Japanese and Australian buyers, so I think she’s going to hit a lot of people’s pages based on her pedigree. “Normally you’d be frightened going in with hip 1 – and don’t get me wrong there’s still 2 per cent utter
fear in me – however, she’s very good, well made and jumps through all the hoops physically, so I’m actually kind of excited to have the first hip in the ring. “Also, it’s the first American haroah at September so it will set the precedent for the sale. I actually think it may work in my favour.” The Triple Crown-winning superstar’s first crop have taken the sales industry by storm, with a host of seven-figure sums in evidence at this year’s auctions worldwide. Mc ntee is just one of a growing number of vendors to have been suitably impressed by his offspring. “He’s throwing a really good sort, I sold a weanling last year
for , for the same owner whom we’re selling for on the Monday,” he says. “I’ve seen a fair few of them and they’re really nice horses. He’s putting his body on them, they have very deep, hard girths and good shoulders, and very uropean movement. “In America that wouldn’t be the norm, so when you see some who are slinky and move well like uropean horses, people get excited over here.” Once hip 1 is out of the way, Mc ntee has an embarrassment of riches at his disposal with a further four stoutly bred individuals set to go under the hammer. They are spearheaded by a Bodemeister colt out of Urbanini hip 556 . “He’s very strong, good

quality of bone, and has an athletic walk,” he explains. “I’ve also got a Malibu Moon filly in there [hip 9 1], she’s the first foal out of a mare called Galveston Bay. I’ve grown up with this horse a little bit and saw the mare before she was bred to Malibu Moon. She has a great shoulder and a really good si e for a first foal so I’m excited about her.”

c NT also has a Street Boss filly, bought on his behalf as a weanling last year, whom he is particularly effusive in his praise for. “She really is something quite special physically,” he beams. “Keeneland came and inspected the horse and put her in Book 1. You don’t see many of Street Boss’s in Book 1 so you can imagine how good her physicality is for Keeneland to want her in there.” Away from the glamour of Book 1, Mc ntee is equally enthusiastic about the sale prospects of his Colonel John colt out of the Grade 2-placed mare Appreciating hip 1679 , whose first foal was sold by Mc ntee for 2 ,
at Fasig-Tipton 12 months ago when working for Darby Dan. “He’s owned by Mr Jack Oxley,”Mc ntee says. “He really is the quintessential thoroughbred owner, he exudes class, decency and kindness. When I started out on my own he called me up and said you’ve always been very good to me, so I’m going to send you a horse to sell this year, which I was blown away by. “The mare was a great racehorse herself, she has a really deep family and this is a really good colt, as good as his brother was last year. I’ve got to admit I’m really excited to sell this horse, I think he’s going to be well received. I don’t think he’ll make the money his brother made based on sire power but I feel very privileged to sell this horse.” Whatever comes to fruition at Keeneland, Mc ntee can take pride in almost doubling his first year target of putting 1 horses through the ring, with just under 2 set to go under the hammer in 2 1 . You cannot help but wonder what challenge he takes on next, but it would take a brave man to bet against it incorporating family involvement somewhere along the line.
