US BREEDING-STOCK SALES Sales to whet the appetite

T

HE excitement in Kentucky next month does not end when the runners cross the line in the Classic to bring the curtain down on the Breeders’ Cup meeting at Churchill Downs.

Across the state a day later – November 4 – the ultra-select Fasig-Tipton November Breeding-Stock Sale takes place. It was there in 2017 brilliant racemares Songbird and Tepin fetched $9.5 million and $8m and where, a decade ago this year, the proven producer Better Than Honour sold for an all-time filly or mare record of $14m.

The catalogue for this year’s auction includes 116 foals, the largest number in recent history, followed by 69 Graded stakes winners or producers before supplementary entries. If there is one lot who could threaten the bar set by Better Than Honour it is probably the exceptionally speedy filly Lady Aurelia. The daughter of sire-of-the-moment Scat Daddy comes under the hammer at Fasig-Tipton as hip 200.

The Keeneland November Breeding-Stock Sale, held in Lexington from November 5 to 16, is a much larger affair with 4,509 horses accepted. There is quality as well as quantity though, and in a change of format this year the most prestigious hips go under the hammer in an exclusive first session featuring 247 Graded stakes-winning fillies and mares and premium foals.

Guaranteed to be knocked down for prices well into seven figures are the miraculous five-time Grade 1 winner Lady Eli and the undefeated Dream Tree, who could enhance her value further when she competes in the Breeders’ Cup Filly Mare Sprint. There will be strong competition, too, for the weanling sisters to champions Arrogate and Honor Code.

Away from the headline horses there will be bargains to be had. For example, Green Room, the dam of this season’s Oaks heroine Forever Together and the €3.2m top-priced yearling at the Goffs Orby Sale this month, was not sold for $280,000 at Keeneland November in 2005 but was bought on behalf of her present owners for $240,000 the following January.

Purchases like that serve to remind us that, although European and American bloodlines have diverged somewhat in the last decade, any agent or breeder who ignores the Kentucky breeding-stock sales is not doing their due diligence.

How could they be when this season’s star three-year-old colt Roaring Lion is a US-bred by leading stateside turf sire Kitten’s Joy when Lancaster Bomber and US Navy Flag, sons of Claiborne Farm stalwart War Front, have gained Group 1 laurels and when the whole world seemingly wants to add a son of the late sensation Scat Daddy to their stallion ranks

Big-spending Phoenix Thoroughbreds has repeatedly stated its intention to claw back money for investors by trading its best-performing horses and Dream Tree is one of the first it could receive a significant windfall from.

Another broodmare prospect by the sensational Scat Daddy, her page is also illuminated by her half-brother, Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint hero Mongolian Saturday.

She kept up family honour and demonstrated fabulous versatility by winning five races, including the Grade 2 Pocahontas Stakes on a muddy dirt track at Churchill Downs at two and the Grade 1 American Oaks on firm ground at Santa Anita at three. Two-time Horse of the Year Chrome leads stallions with their first foals in Kentucky Michele MacDonald on the leading first-crop weanling sires represented at auction next month

EANLINGS from one of the most diverse and talented group of first-crop stallions in years, led by two-time Horse of the Year California Chrome, will make their debut at the November sales and take the early steps in the race to determine leading sires of the future.

Eight other particularly notable first-crop stallions will join California Chrome with the debut of their initial North American-bred weanlings, including Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist, Preakness Stakes winner Exaggerator, Tapit’s top miler Frosted, American champion and international Group 1 winner Flintshire, European champion Air Force Blue and Australian champion Vancouver.

The remarkable depth of this contingent is made even clearer by the fact that no fewer than four Breeders’ Cup winners – Hit It A Bomb, Tamarkuz, Texas Red and Tourist – are among the supporting cast of horses, beyond what may be viewed as the top nine, with first offspring coming to market.

While he does not command the highest stud fee, having begun his career at $40,000, or possess the best pedigree or have the most weanlings in the catalogues, California C rome will draw the spotlight due to his championship titles.

Early reports from the staff at Taylor Made Farm, which stands the seven-year-old son of Lucky Pulpit, are optimistically realistic, with the weanlings by California Chrome earning good marks for their physicals.

How the selective marketplace responds to Chrome’, whose pedigree is more blue collar than upper crust, will be an intriguing subplot during the November sales season.

I’m liking what he’s throwing so far, said Taylor Made vice-president Frank Taylor, who supervises boarding operations at the farm. A lot of them look like him – they have a really good presence about them, they’re attractive and they’ve got good necks and shoulders and are well balanced.

a lot of people who gravitate to him.

A total of 15 California Chrome weanlings have been entered for the sales, with one set for Fasig-Tipton and the rest at Keeneland. Half of the Keeneland group has been designated for the single Book 1 session.

We didn’t really know what to expect, said Travis White, Taylor Made’s stallion nominations manager who has inspected many of the stallion’s first offspring. But I’d say they’re very athletic and good-sized. They have a nice square hip walking away from you. They’ve been correct and are good movers. They have good natural muscling.

The biomechanics he had, I think, are translating down to what we can see so far in the foals. He’s passing down the physical traits that made him such a good racehorse.

The first of the California Chromes expected to appear on the auction stage is a dark bay filly out of the Bluegrass Cat mare She Cat catalogued as hi at Fasig-Tipton in the Taylor Made consignment.

The filly is a half-sister to multiple Graded stakes-placed Colonist and from the family of Grade 1 winner Try Something New, German highweight Somethingdifferent and Grade 2 winner Dynaslew.

That filly is very, very nice she’s been an A-physical pretty much from day one. Every time we’ve looked at her she’s been ite at the top of the list, White said.

think should work well. I’d say we’re very optimistic about her going forward, White said.

At Keeneland, the California Chrome weanlings are a very, very good group , he observed.

When it’s the first crop going to the sale, you have to have a good sample size so buyers can see what the horse is producing, and a good mix of quality as well. With him, it’s worked out really, really well – it’s a solid group across the board. I couldn’t be more excited about the ones who are in there.

One of the more notable California Chromes at Keeneland, based on pedigree, is the Taylor Made-consigned hi , a bay filly named California Reign out of the young Unbridled’s Song mare Scandalous Song, a half-sister to champion Stardom Bound.

Unbridled’s Song is another good fit for California Chrome, so we went out and got as many Unbridled’s Song mares as we could, White said. This filly has always been kind of a big, leggy, scopey, two-turn type. I’d think she would be very well received.

Among the California Chromes in other consignments, hi is likely to draw attention. The grey colt out of the stakes-placed Rockport Harbor mare Stayclassysandiego is a half-brother to multiple Grade 2 winner and Grade 1-placed Pretty N Cool.

Another California Chrome colt to watch is hi , a dark bay out of the Arch mare Laffina, a half-sister to three stakes winners including Charming N Lovable, the dam of Grade 1 winner Fault.

Laffina’s yearling Uncle Mo filly was acquired by Bob Baffert’s client, Baoma Corp, for $500,000 at the Saratoga select sale this year.

This colt has always been really good he’s out of an Arch mare and that was another one of the broodmare sire lines we were trying to get to. This mare is owned by a shareholder and was raised here at the farm, White said.

We got a great deal of support – the right kind of physicals and the right kind of pedigrees in the mares – from the shareholders, and that has helped push California Chrome along.

California Chrome covered 145 mares in his first season at stud and another 135 this year, White said. The stallion is in the midst of his second shuttle season in Chile, where his book is expected to total around 110 mares.

While market observers will be keenly watching how the first crop by California Chrome is received at the November sales, there are a plethora of other first-crop stallions who will vie for attention.

The first foals by the Darley duo of Frosted and Nyquist are highly anticipated. Frosted led all the first-crop stallions with his $50,000 stud fee, while Nyquist stood for $40,000. h handsome h d grey The Frosted has

five weanlings in the Fasig-Tipton catalogue and 21 at Keeneland. Nyquist, a son of champion and outstanding young sire Uncle Mo, has two weanlings at Fasig-Tipton and nine at Keeneland both he and Frosted covered more than 150 mares in their first seasons at stud.

We’re extremely impressed with the first foals by Frosted and Nyquist. From what we’ve seen, the quality runs very deep and we’re eagerly awaiting their weanlings going through the sales ring in a couple of weeks, said Darren Fox, Darley America’s sales manager.

Frosted will kick off the Keeneland auction with hi , a grey filly who is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Hard Aces, and his weanlings at Fasig-Tipton include hi ,a grey colt out of Grade 2 winner Glorious View.

The Ny uist sale weanlings feature hi at Fasig-Tipton, a filly out of stakes winner Martha’s Moon from the family of outstanding producer Blush With Pride and her descendants, including European champion Peeping Fawn and Broodmare of the Year Better Than Honour and her Belmont Stakes-winning offspring Rags To Riches and Jazil.

At Keeneland, Nyquist’s weanlings include hi 3, a colt out of Holy Place, a Pulpit half-sister to champion Lady Eli. Looking at other promising young stallions, E aggerator, a son of Curlin who finished second to Nyquist in the Kentucky Derby and then defeated that rival in a dy Preakness, stood his mudd first season at WinStar Farm for $25,000 and covered 162 marees.

Champion sprinter Run appy, a son of Super Saver who stood for $25,000 at Claiborne Farm, was bred to 127 mares and has a total of 24 weanlings entered for the November sales. i at Keeneland is a half-brother to Canadian champions Biofuel and Tu Endie Wei. There will be international interest in the offspring of first-crop weanling sires Flintshire, Air Force Blue, Mshawish and Vancouver whose initial Australian crop has already premiered in the southern hemisphere market .

Flints ire, placed by owner-breeder Juddmonte at John Sikura’s Hill n’ Dale Farms for his stud career, received 121 mares, an excellent number in America for a turf champion by Dansili, while standing for $20,000.

Twenty-five Flintshire weanlings have been consigned at Keeneland, with hi from the Hill n’ Dale consignment particularly interesting on pedigree. The bay colt is a half-brother to multiple Grade 1 winner Diversify and to Graded winners and producers Keertana and Snow Top Mountain.

Air Force Blue, the Coolmore-owned son of War Front, also stood for $20,000 while visiting with 153 mares last year. He has three offspring catalogued for Fasig-Tipton and 22 at Keeneland, with the former sale showcasing hi , a bay colt out of German highweight Peace Royale bred by Dr Christoph Berglar’s Narola Llc. At Keeneland, hi is an Air Force Blue filly who is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Stormy Lucy.

Ms a is , a son of Medaglia D’Oro who won Grade 1 races on dirt and turf who stood for $15,000 alongside California Chrome at Taylor Made while covering 117 mares, has 20 offspring in the sales catalogues.

Keeneland hi 3 , a colt, is out of a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Circle Of Life, who produced Grade 1 winner and sire Circular uay. ancou er, Coolmore’s precocious son of Medaglia D’Oro who won the prestigious Golden Slipper in Australia and stood his first season in Kentucky for $15,000, greeted 166 mares and will be represented by 28 weanlings at Keeneland. i 3 is a colt from the family of Breeders’ Cup Filly Mare Sprint winner Wavell Avenue, while hi is a colt out of a daughter of champion Possibly Perfect.

T THE same time the North American bloodstock marketplace has scratched its way back to pre-global crash levels, the US stallion ranks seem ready to charge into the promised land of a bold new era.

With the first yearlings by Triple Crown winner American Pharoah earning an enthusiastic reception in sale rings this year and another Triple Crown winner, Justify, set to begin his stud career in February, a squadron of other young stallions also are taking initial steps as contenders for the title of leading sire in the future.

Led by America’s top two money-earners of all time, champions Arrogate and Gun Runner, more than a dozen stallions who stood their initial seasons this spring in Kentucky for fees of $10,000 or more will be represented at the November sales with their first foals carried in utero.

Arrogate and Gun Runner will be the undeniable stars among first-year covering stallions with the multiple Grade 1 winners’ achievements including banking $17,422,600 and $15,988,500 respectively during their racing careers.

Juddmonte Farms’ Arrogate won two of their three meetings, including the Dubai World Cup in a devastatingly impressive run from last-to-first, and was the champion in their three-year-old season and the world’s highest-rated racehorse of 2017. But Gun Runner finished his career by sweeping five consecutive Grade 1 races, defeating his nemesis in the Breeders’ Cup Classic and earning the Horse of the Year title before adding the 2018 Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes to his r sum .

Arrogate, by Unbridled’s Song out of multiple stakes winner Bubbler, by Distorted Humor, covered 143 mares at an advertised fee of $75,000 this year at Juddmonte. Half of those mares were Graded/ Group stakes winners or producers, said Juddmonte’s Leif Aaron, and 25 per cent are Grade 1 winners or producers. wn Juddmonte bred 23 of its ow mares to Arrogate, including multiple Grade 1-winning ne sprinter Paulassilverlining, on of many dirt specialists the farm acquired privately to support its superstar new sire..

The farm limited Arrogate’s book and concentrated, when possible, on working with n breeders who race to avoid an eventual overload of foals in the commercial market.

We focused on performance in doing his book, Aaron said, noting there are 23 mares who are either millionaire runners or

Among the many high-profile mares bred to Arrogate this year are multiple champion Songbird, the daughter of Medaglia D’Oro purchased for $9.5 million last year by Mandy Pope. Prominent Juddmonte mares bred to Arrogate include Kentucky Oaks winner Flute, by Seattle Slew multiple Grade 1 winner Sightseek Distant View Soothing Touch Touch Gold , dam of multiple Grade 1 winner Emollient and stakes winner and multiple Grade 1-placed Hofburg and Grade 2 winner Filimbi Mizzen Mast .

While Juddmonte does not intend to sell either mares in foal to the stallion or its Arrogate produce next year, three mares owned by other breeders and in foal to Arrogate are entered for the Fasig-Tipton November Sale, with another 13 at Keeneland.

Among the most intriguing in the sales catalogues are Last Kitten, hi at Fasig-Tipton, who is a half-sister to champion and outstanding sire Kitten’s Joy and a stakes producer herself h lf Maggie i

Runner include Chilean champion Wapi, a daughter of Scat Daddy owned with Don Alberto Corp, and With Flying Colors, a stakes winner by A.P. Indy out of undefeated champion and Broodmare of the Year Personal Ensign’s Grade 1-winning daughter My Flag.

Like Arrogate, Gun Runner has three mares in foal to him catalogued for the Fasig-Tipton sale with 14 more at Keeneland.

Terrific Treasure, a young Street Cry mare who is out of a half-sister to Horse of the Year Zenyatta and Grade 1 winner Balance, will be offered in foal to Gun Runner as hi at Keeneland by Claiborne, agent for the Edward A Cox jnr dispersal.

Puca, a stakes-winning Big Brown half-sister to Grade 1 winner Finnegans Wake i Fi W k and d in i foal to Gun Runner, is hi in the Denali Stud consignment at Fasig-Tipton.

Other exciting first-year covering sires include three precocious Grade 1 winners from outstanding sire lines who stand at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud and clearly have had great appeal to breeders.

Classic Empire, a son of Pioneerof the Nile who ruled as 2016 champion juvenile, stood for $35,000 and was bred to 185 mares this year multiple Grade 1 winner Practical Joke, by Into Mischief, stood for $30,000 and greeted 220 mares and Tapit’s Grade 1-winning son Cupid, who served 223 mares for a fee of $12,500.

Like Classic Empire, Practical Joke has no in-foal mares consigned to the main Fasig-Tipton catalogue but he has 30 entered at Keeneland, including hi 3 , Be Fair, a Grade 3 winner and Grade 1-placed half-sister to top-level scorer Macho Again, and Cashconsiderations hi 3 , a winning half-sister to Grade 1 winner Sean Avery.

Cupid will be represented at Fasig-Tipton by Yankee V Victoria, hi , dam of Shang Shang Shang, winner of the Group 2 Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot this year.

An additional 23 mares bred to Cupid are in the Keeneland catalogue, which features hi , Ardara, a daughter of two-time Canadian champion grass mare Inish Glora and dam of stakes-placed The .

stallions, who each stood for $25,000, will also be of interest to buyers who followed their successful racing careers under trainer Bob Baffert. Lord Nelson, a son of Pulpit who overcame laminitis to stand his first season at Spendthrift Farm, and Claiborne Farm’s Mastery, by Candy Ride and an early favorite for the 2017 Kentucky Derby before incurring a career-ending injury, will both be well represented at the sales.

Spendthrift has entered three mares in foal to Lord Nelson at Keeneland with consignor Small Batch Sales, including hi , Grade 2 winner Alpha Kitten, whose dam is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Marylebone. Eight other mares in foal to Lord Nelson have also been catalogued for the Keeneland sale.

Thirty-four mares in foal to Mastery have been entered at Keeneland along with one at Fasig-Tipton – Drumette, a ten-year-old daughter of Henny Hughes consigned by Gainesway as hi 3 and best known as the dam of leading American three-year-old filly Monomoy Girl.

At Keeneland, hi in the Claiborne consignment is stakes winner Courtesan, by Street Sense and out of a half-sister to Grade 1 winners and sires Discreet Cat and Discreetly Mine.

Other first-year covering stallions of note include the Calumet Farm duo of Keen Ice, the Travers Stakes winner by Curlin who stood for $20,000, and Brazilian Horse of the Year and American Grade 1 winner Bal A Bali, a son of Put It Back whose fee was $15,000.

Thirty-seven mares in foal to Keen Ice, including Dreamtheimpossible hi , a Group 1-placed daughter of Giant’s Causeway and record-setting Grade 1 winner Spain, have been catalogued at Keeneland.

Similarly, 34 mares in foal to Bal A Bali have been entered at Keeneland, including hi , Grey ueen, a More Than Ready half-sister to French Group 3 winner Dalwari and out of a half-sister to Daylami and Dalakhani.

Buyers will have plenty of opportunities to acquire mares in foal to a variety of first-year covering stallions. T WAS always on the cards that Ghostzapper would one day excel as a broodmare sire. He was, after all, an outstanding racehorse best remembered for his three-length victory over Roses In May in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Lone Star Park in 2004.

He also has a fine pedigree, as an Awesome Again half-brother to top-notch sprinter and sire City Zip from the family of Kentucky Derby hero Lil E Tee. Awesome Again has himself proved an important broodmare sire, having been represented in this department

by Keen Ice, who took the scalp of American Pharoah to land the Travers Stakes, and this year’s four-time Grade 1 winner Accelerate, who looks likely to line up as favourite for the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Churchill Downs.

City Zip has also notched an elite winner as maternal grandsire, with Noted And uoted having taken the Chandelier Stakes.

There was also the fact that Ghostzapper will have covered an abundance of well-bred and high-achieving mares in his first years at Adena Springs in Kentucky, having commanded a fee of $200,000 to $125,000 between his inaugural season in 2006 and 2009, so will have had his fair share of daughters with impeccable credentials progress through the early stages of their breeding careers.

Drefong, winner of the King’s Bishop Stakes and Breeders’ Cup Sprint in 2016, was a bellwether for Ghostzapper’s prowess as a broodmare sire, which has come to the fore this year through Triple Crown victor Justify and Test Stakes winner American Gal. Those three Grade 1 winners are all out of blueblooded mares from the first crop of 80 live foals by the sire, who is now 11 years old.

US BREEDING-STOCK SALES Lexington the only place F to be for annual sales of broodmare treasures OR buyers looking to acquire world-class broodmares to add to their bloodstock collections like prized pieces of art or rare jewels, there is no better place to be than Lexington in early November.

Between the high drama of the one-session Fasig-Tipton auction held immediately after the Breeders’ Cup and the early days of the subsequent massive Keeneland November Sale, buyers will find the largest number of opportunities to buy blue-blooded fillies and mares anywhere on the globe.

The quality that annually is led in to the rings of America’s two major auction companies can be defined by results over the past dozen years that show for the 24 sales-toppers, 12 at Keeneland and 12 at Fasig-Tipton, global buyers have spent a staggering total of $123.6 million for an average price of $5.15m.

Over that span of time, a world-record price of $10.5m was set at Keeneland in 2007 when Sheikh Mohammed’s former bloodstock adviser John Ferguson bid that sum for the young mare Playful Act even though she was not in foal at the time. Two years later, Better Than Honour smashed that standard when bidding reached $14m at Fasig-Tipton.

In 2012 Mandy Pope stunned a crowd at Fasig-Tipton when going to $10m for Horse of the Year Havre De Grace, setting a world record for a broodmare prospect, and just last year Pope again turned aside all rivals to acquire champion Songbird, also a broodmare prospect, for $9.5m.

No other mares have come close to those figures anywhere in the world.

Yet despite the unforgettable auction dramas and the millions of dollars that have changed hands, the later lives of the famous mares who have starred at the top of the global bloodstock trade tell a story of how very difficult it is for breeders to succeed even when they possess the best bloodlines.

Colics, early deaths, abortions, barren seasons and plain slow offspring seem just as likely to haunt the best mares as any others.

The sales-topping mares, as a group, have produced a large number of foals by many of the world’s top sires over the years since their sales going back to 2006, and their produce includes several Grade 1 winners as well as offspring who couldn’t win or have sold for less than $10,000.

Of course, the younger sales-topping mares sold during the past several years are just beginning their producing careers and could significantly enhance the paradigm.

Here are their stories since their turns in the auction spotlight.

Alas, the story of Playful Act came to an untimely end. Her last two foals, colts by Dubawi in 2012 and Shamardal 2013 named Playmaker and Lusory, did not make an impact on the track.

While Dream Rush did not sell for nearly as much as Playful Act, bringing $3.3m from an agent for owner Halsey Minor to top the sale at Fasig-Tipton, she had her own share of drama.

Minor later declared bankruptcy and the mare was sold privately, while in foal to A.P. Indy, to Stonestreet Farms.

Born in 2010, the A.P. Indy foal was a filly later named Dreaming Of Julia and she became a Grade 1 winner for Stonestreet. Her next foal, Atreides, was a lightly-raced multiple stakes winner by Medaglia D’Oro and he is now standing at Hill n’ Dale Farm with his first crop getting to the races this year.

Dream Rush has a three-year-old filly by Tapit named Dream Pauline who has won her first two starts for Stonestreet a juvenile Curlin filly and a weanling Medaglia D’Oro colt.

2006 Madcap Escapade and Sharp Lisa

By most measures 2006 was a banner year at the November sales. The market was peaking before the crash that would hit with full force two years later and the offerings were strong.

John Sikura’s Hill n’ Dale prevailed at $6m in the bidding for the highest-priced mare at Keeneland, Madcap Escapade, a Grade 1 winner

by Hennessy and half-sister to Grade 1 winner Dubai Escapade, who was carrying her first foal to the cover of Pulpit.

Madcap Escapade had been raced by Bruce Lunsford, and he joined Sikura and Southern Equine Stables in breeding the mare, who immediately delivered dividends. Her Pulpit foal was Grade 1 winner Mi Sueno, who was raced by Southern Equine after that operation bid $1.7m for the filly as a weanling.

In following years Madcap Escapade gave her owners five more foals, including an A.P. Indy colt sold for $1m as a yearling to Demi O’Byrne on behalf of Coolmore.

However, in 2012 at the relatively young age of 11, Madcap Escapade succumbed to colic about two months after producing a Malibu Moon colt. She continues to have an impact on racing and breeding, with Mi Sueno carrying on for her in Japan following her purchase for $1.9m by Katsumi Yoshida at the 2013 Fasig-Tipton November Sale Mi Sueno’s first

The 2006 Fasig-Tipton November Sale also yielded a productive sale-topper. BBA Ireland paid $3.4 million for Grade 1 winner Sharp Lisa, and that daughter of Dixieland Band, sold as a racing or broodmare prospect, went on to deliver accomplished offspring for Coolmore associates.

Among Sharp Lisa’s seven reported foals is Foundry, a son of Galileo who was Group 2-placed in Britain before moving to Australia and becoming a Group 1 winner.

Another son of Galileo and Sharp Lisa is Housesofparliament, a Group 3 winner for Aidan O’Brien and third in the 2016 St Leger before switching to hurdling.

2007 Playful Act and Dream Rush

A classic battle royale between the forces of Sheikh Mohammed and Coolmore at Keeneland in 2007 resulted in young British champion Playful Act eliciting a world-record price for a broodmare of $10.5m. The Group 1-winning daughter of Sadler’s Wells, bred by the late Robert Sangster, was not in foal, although her only previous foal, Giant’s Play, a Giant’s Causeway filly, would go on to be a Grade 2 winner.

Once in the Darley broodmare band, Playful Act produced a pair of Street Cry fillies in 2009 and 2010 named Anjaz and Tearless, with the former a Grade 3 winner and the latter a stakes

Just a year after Playful Act’s November record, extraordinary mare Better Than Honour – America’s 2007 Broodmare of the Year and dam of Belmont Stakes winners Rags To Riches and Jazil as well as Irish champion Man Of Iron – smashed that mark when sold for $14m at Fasig-Tipton.

The sale of the daughter of Deputy Minister has to be accompanied with an asterisk, however, as co-owner Southern Equine, which owned 70 per cent before the auction, basically bought out partner Hill n’ Dale during a dispersal of their joint holdings.

Now 22, Better Than Honour has not produced a foal since 2013. Her last two foals were Street Cry fillies Better Not Cry and Tiffany’s Honour, who, coincidentally, are both entered in this year’s Keeneland November Sale.

While fetching nowhere near Better Than Honour’s record price, Grade 1 winner and $2.39m earner Hystericalady topped the 2008 Keeneland November Sale at $3m when sold to Sheikh Mohammed. The now 15-year-old daughter of Distorted Humor has produced eight consecutive foals after aborting her first pregnancy, and her best runner is Godolphin’s 2018 Grade 2 winner and Grade 1-placed Lady Montdore, by Medaglia D’Oro.

2009 Honest Pursuit and Holiday Runner

With the global recession in full force in 2009, the November sales were more modest, but the beautifully-bred Honest Pursuit drew $3.1m from the Wertheimer brothers at Keeneland while Grade 1 producer Holiday Runner commanded $2.15m from Summer Wind Farm at Fasig.

By Storm Cat out of Grade 1 winner Honest Lady, a half-sister to Empire Maker and the dam of Grade 1 winner and sire First Defence, Honest Pursuit has produced two winners from seven foals, with her best runner the Grade 3-placed Amertume, a three-year-old Tapit filly.

2016 Unrivaled Belle and Baffled

produced Grade 1 winner Seventh Street, Group 1 winner Reynaldothewizard and the Grade 2-placed American Story, died from complications after delivering a Tiznow colt in 2010 for Summer Wind. That colt was sold as a yearling for $375,000.

Pope was back at the top of the sales ledgers in 2016 when she paid $3.8m at Keeneland for Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner Unrivaled Belle,

by Unbridled’s Song, who was carrying a Tapit full-sibling to her second produce, champion Unique Bella. The subsequent foal, a filly, has been named Unrivaled Princess, and Unrivaled Belle produced a Tapit colt this year and was bred back to Tapit.

Baffled, dam of Grade 1 winner Constitution and Graded winners Jacaranda and Boynton, topped the Fasig auction while carrying a Tapit foal when she was purchased by Bridlewood Farm and Don Alberto for $3.5m.

A Group-placed daughter of Distorted Humor, Baffled produced a Tapit filly in 2017 and a Tapit colt in 2018 and has been bred back to Medaglia D’Oro.

2010 Dreamtheimpossible and Awesome Feather

Frank Stronach’s Adena Springs swept both November sales-toppers in 2010, paying $2.55m for Group 1-placed Dreamtheimpossible and $2.3m for American champion Awesome Feather.

By Giant’s Causeway out of the brilliant Spain, Dreamtheimpossible was sold at Keeneland carrying her first foal to the cover of Galileo.

The resulting colt, named Unikat, was later gelded and is still racing, with earnings just under $100,000. Overall, Dreamtheimpossible has produced five foals and two winners, and was resold in 2017 at Keeneland for $100,000 to Calumet Farm.

Awesome Feather raced for two more years and won another Grade 1 race before being resold to Katsumi Yoshida for $1.9m at Fasig in 2013. Following a formula Yoshida has often employed with his broodmare purchases, he has bred Awesome Feather several times to Deep Impact and has been rewarded with one colt and three fillies.

The colt, a now three-year-old named Super Feather, more than paid for his dam when sold for the equivalent of $2.59m at the 2016 Japan Racing Horse Association select sale and he has gone on to be a stakes winner and Group 2-placed this season.

2011 Royal Delta and Funny Moon

Just after accomplishing her first of two victories in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, eventual three-time champion Royal Delta was the queen of the 2011 Keeneland November Sale when selling for $8.5m to Benjamin Leon of Besilu Stables, who also purchased uiet Giant, eventually the dam of 2017 Horse of the Year Gun Runner, for $3m at that sale.

Royal Delta won four more Grade 1s and eventually was sent to Ireland to be bred to Galileo. Tragically, the daughter of Empire Maker died after producing a filly, her only foal, at Coolmore Ireland in 2017.

The sale-topper at Fasig in 2011 was Malibu Moon’s Grade 1-winning daughter Funny Moon, who drew $2.3m from Leonard Riggio’s My Meadowview while in foal to Indian Charlie.

Since then she has delivered six foals and three winners, with the Indian Charlie colt Pow Wow Pal, who was later gelded, the biggest earner with over $93,481.

Funny Moon was bred to Arrogate for 2019.

2012 Havre De Grace and Pure Clan

Presented dramatically while wearing a special cooler at Fasig-Tipton by Taylor Made Sales Agency on behalf of owner Rick Porter, Havre De Grace became only the third mare in history to draw eight figures.

Since then Havre De Grace, a daughter of Saint Liam, has delivered five foals, four by Tapit and one by War Front. Her two winners are the Tapit fillies Heavenly Grace and Graceful Princess, the latter a juvenile, and Havre De Grace has been bred back to Tapit.

Pure Prize’s multiple Grade 1-winning daughter Pure Clan, who topped the 2012 Fasig November auction when sold for $4.5m to the Borges Torrealba family that owns Three Chimneys Farm, has also produced five foals and two winners. Her 2014 Tapit colt was sold as a yearling for $1.65m at Keeneland but later was gelded and iss unraced.

2013 Betterbetterbetter and Awesome Maria

Mandy Pope and Coolmore scooped the two highest-priced mares at the 2013 November sales, with the former paying $5.2m for Galileo’s Group-placed daughter Betterbetterbetter, in foal to War Front, at Fasig. Coolmore acquired Grade 1 winner Awesome Maria, by Maria’s Mon and in foal to Giant’s Causeway, for $4m at Keeneland.

Betterbetterbetter has had four foals, although only two of racing age and no starters.

Shadwell paid $1.45m and $1.2m for her 2014 and 2017 War Front fillies when they were offered as yearlings at Keeneland.

A three-parts sister to Irish champions uarter Moon and Yesterday, Betterbetterbetter has a weanling Tapit filly and was bred back to War Front.

Awesome Maria has delivered three foals with no winners yet, although one of her foals died.

Her now three-year-old War Front filly named Awe Emma earned back half of the mare’s purchase price when sold as a weanling for $2m to Willis Horton at Keeneland.

2014 Aloof and Princess Of Sylmar

Returning with a yen for more Galileo blood, Pope paid $3.9m for stakes winner and Group-placed Aloof to top the Keeneland market in 2014 while Japan’s Teruya Yoshida bid $3.1m for multiple Grade 1 winner Princess Of Sylmar,

by Majestic Warrior, to lead Fasig results.

Aloof produced War Front fillies in 2015 and 2016 and they were sold as yearlings for $900,000 and $1.6m. The now three-year-old Flora Sandes is a winner for Godolphin while juvenile Balon Rose is owned by Larry Best’s O O Equine.

Princess Of Sylmar produced a colt and filly

by Deep Impact in 2016 and 2017. The colt, named Danon Luster and racing for prominent owner Masahiro Noda, won his debut handily at Tokyo this month.

Coolmore acquired champio on Stellar Wind for $6m to top the Keenelan nd sale after buying another champiion, international multiplee Group 1 winn ner Tepin for $8m at Fasig. Stellar Wind was sent to Irela and to be bred to Galileo.

US BREEDING-STOCK SALES ‘The higher the level, the more risk, the more reward. We find it challenging and exciting’ W

Michele MacDonald talks to John Sikura, the man behind Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms and its equally successful sales agency

HEN John Sikura thinks ahead to the November sales and his views on selling and buying top-level bloodstock, he is reminded of the National Geographic documentary film Free Solo about a climber who scales Yosemite’s stunning sheer peak El Capitan without any safety gear.

That’s what we feel like – we’re trying to ascend a very tall mountain without a rope.

If you conquer the summit, it’s elation. At the same time, if you have a misstep you can fall a long way, Sikura says.

That’s what high-end horses are about – that’s the challenge. But the higher the risk, the higher the rewards, the more heightened your senses are and the sharper your approach should be.

Sikura, president of Hill n’ Dale Farms and its sale agency, has honed as keen of an approach as anyone at the lofty peaks of the Keeneland and Fasig-Tipton November sales since 2006. Hill n’ Dale has consigned a total of six mares who have topped one of the sales, or 25 per cent of the highest-priced mares in that time frame, including two who set world records, the $10.5 million Playful Act and, subsequently, the $14m Better Than Honour.

He has also bought a pair of sale-toppers, including champion Take Charge Brandi for $6m at Keeneland in 2015, for partnerships he directs, and he has routinely offered some of the most esteemed bloodlines while appealing to his target audience, the world’s best breeders.

Yet this year is shaping up to be exceptional, even by Sikura’s standards.

Hill n’ Dale will offer the two most exciting mares to come to market in America this season: 2017 female turf champion Lady Eli, in foal to War Front and catalogued as hi at Keeneland, and 2016 European champion Lady Aurelia, a brilliantly fast daughter of Scat Daddy consigned as a broodmare prospect and listed as hi at Fasig-Tipton.

They’re unique offerings and they’re very special, Sikura observes. They were great racemares and they’ll provide an opportunity for an elite buyer to buy a special racehorse who hopefully will become a foundation broodmare.

the market is excited and will be open to see those once-in-many-years offerings, he says.

The champion mares and blueblooded weanlings are just the most brilliant highlights of Hill n’ Dale’s 103-horse consignment at Keeneland and nine-horse Fasig-Tipton package, the latter of which also features Grade 1 winner American Gal and her unraced juvenile full-sister America’s Starlet.

There are other intriguing horses in the consignments, including three weanlings from the first crop by American champion turf runner and international star Flintshire, who Sikura is standing due to his belief that America can benefit from more diversity in its sire ranks.

Known for launching the stud careers of Medaglia D’Oro and Candy Ride and for negotiating the moves of Curlin and Kitten’s Joy to Hill n’ Dale, Sikura approaches the November sales with multi-dimensional interest.

Divine Park, raced to five Grade 1 victories for the Sheep Pond Partners, Sol Kumin and Jay Hanley. She was withdrawn from last year’s Keeneland November Sale after being injured while in tight quarters in the early stages of the Breeders’ Cup Filly Mare Turf.

Lady Aurelia, a four-year-old who defeated males in the 2016 Prix Morny and 2017 King’s Stand Stakes, is coming to market because breeder Barbara Banke of Stonestreet Farms wants to ensure fair

value for her partners, George Bolton and Peter Leidel, who are more involved in racing than commercial breeding.

In that we’re offering Lady Eli and have a consignment we think will be so well attended, we felt there will be some synergy between the two groups if we have weanlings of that same quality to stand alongside the mares, and we felt the timing was right to do that, Sikura says.

His weanling stars are at Keeneland, a Tapit hi filly who is a half-sister to

champion Arrogate, the all-time leading earner among North American and European-raced runners, and hi , a Curlin half-sister to Grade 1 winner and young stallion Honor Code and to the Tapit filly Sikura sold in 2014 for a North American weanling record price of $3m.

Consigning a superior group of weanlings, including a quartet of War Front fillies and a quintet of youngsters by Curlin, reflects Sikura’s intuition about the current market and is a follow-up to the bold approach he took

when the Tapit-Serena’s Cat filly set the weanling record while purchased by Bridlewood Farm.

Four years ago we had a consignment of weanlings the like of which hadn’t been seen for many, many years. I think we set a new standard in the marketplace, he reflects.

We didn’t offer as many last year, and we’re sort of refreshing our approach to offering, again, a group that I don’t think is seen very often.

It’s a bit of a feel. I just have a feel that the market is right,

HILE others might feel pressure with so many high-profile horses entrusted by clients as well as their own major investments on the line, Sikura relishes the opportunity. He has scaled these mountains before and is hoping to experience more euphoria at the top of the current strong market.

You feel an obligation to clients for a spectacular result, but we’re not intimidated by that challenge, he declares.

The reason to be in the horse business, whether you race or sell, is to do so at the highest level. Pressure goes with the territory. There’s risk and reward in everything, he says.

The higher the level, the more risk, the more reward.

We find it challenging and exciting – it drives me, and I don’t feel intimated or apprehensive about presenting a potential sale-topper. That’s why I’m in the business.

Like any successful breeder, he relies on instinct regarding individual horses and the pulse of the market, and his

shrewdness over the years has been key in developing a track record that few can match.

From 2006 through 2017, Hill n’ Dale has sold 1,184 horses at November sales for monumental total gross of $270.87m.

The alliances he has built over the years means he often consigns horses owned or connected with Coolmore, Stonestreet, trainer Bob Baffert, Dell Ridge Farm, Craig Bernick of Glen Hill Farm and others. Additionally, many of the horses he consigns are owned by Hill n’ Dale Equine Holdings, solely or in partnerships such as the Elevage venture he created with Bernick.

My goal each year is to have a consignment that is distinguished and distinctively different. That’s what draws people, that’s what creates those big sale results, Sikura says. If you have an expectation of topping a sale or selling weanlings for yearling prices, you’d better bring something over that’s special.

I certainly have several of those special individuals again this year and that’s what we want to be known for having: horses who other people don’t have. We have to appeal to proven international breeders, that have great stock and still say, when they evaluate their own holdings, that this filly or this mare will help their cause or move them forward.

The challenge in meeting that threshold, when people have these amazing portfolios, is very high. Their standards are the highest in the business and therefore you have to be spot-on with what they demand.

Before, during and after sales, Sikura is constantly evaluating, and he indicates not all the weanlings he has entered for this year’s auction may actually go through the ring. He also affirms that there is a possibility he may again be a high-level buyer.

It’s a very fluid process. We always decide what we think is best for the horse and that will come first, he says.

I never have any foregone conclusions, he adds about the possibility of buying.

We’ll look at the catalogues. I don’t have a preset plan I try to be reactive to my emotions.

Sikura is a co-owner of the two star weanlings in Hill n’ Dale’s Keeneland consignment, having invested in Arrogate’s dam Bu ubbler with Clearsky Farms a and in Serena’s Cat, a stakes-w winning granddaughter of cham mpion and successsful producer Serena’’s Song, with Deell Ridge.

The bay b Tapit filly out of Bubblerr, born on n May 1, is a leggy, wonderful, lovely ffilly. She has immense quality. I don’t

think you’re going to see anything like her, Sikura says.

Honor Code’s half-sister by Curlin, a dark bay foaled on April 24, is, he adds: Great-bodied. She’s more like the mare than some of her other offerings in that she looks very strong and very fast.

The mare herself was kind of unique in that her preferred distance was five furlongs on the turf and then she produces milers and milers-plus. This filly looks very fast to me.

These weanlings are special opportunities. You don’t get to see those quality pedigrees very often, he adds.

Also intriguing among the Hill n’ Dale weanlings is a pair produced by the mares from the family of outstanding sire Redoute’s Choice who Sikura ventured to Australia to acquire in 2014 for the Elevage portfolio. i is a War Front filly

out of the Encosta De Lago mare Drifting Cube, who cost the equivalent of $1,018,600, and hi is a Medaglia D’Oro colt out of the Encosta De Lago mare Taste Of Heaven, a $1,389,000 purchase.

Before these weanlings come into the ring, the mares have already repaid Elevage, with four offspring having reaped $2.885m when sold at auction.

As to Elevage, Sikura says with a tinge of a chuckle that he and Bernick have a very complicated goal: to make money in the horse business .

He continues: We’re pursuing that goal strategies are ever changing. I think the portfolio has performed very well. We’ve been active in the marketplace and we have differing strategies that will remain proprietary, and I don’t want to discuss why or what we do other than to say we try to buy quality bloodstock at prices we think provide llong-term potential and

return on investment. We have a lot of money in play.

Sikura has been reaching or exceeding the high goals he sets, and Hill n’ Dale comes into the November sales with the momentum of having sold the War Front colt who topped the Keeneland September yearling sale on a $2.4m bid from Coolmore’s MV Magnier.

That colt was bred by Hill n’ Dale and the Stretch Run Ventures of Sikura’s father-in-law Ed McGhee, and is from the family of Broodmare of the Year and world record-setter Better Than Honour. Seven daughters of Better Than Honour’s Storm Cat daughter, Teeming, are part of the farm’s broodmare band, including Grade 1 winner Streaming, dam of the War Front colt.

IKURA says those holdings, and his continued efforts to breed mares from his female families to outstanding sires, works to the advantage of buyers who purchase the weanlings and yearlings who Hill n’ Dale opts to sell.

We want to set standards, we want to set records. We want to offer special horses and we want the buyer, long-term, to benefit from buying horses out of our consignment, he says.

It’s really a long-term view, because if you buy a weanling and she costs a lot and something goes wrong and she doesn’t win a stakes but her first foal does, then the page you have not only remains but we’re breeding the mother, the sister, everything in the family to the best of our ability to horses like Curlin, Tapit, Medaglia D’Oro and War Front.

We’re working on behalf of the customer even though we’ve sold the horse by supporting those pedigrees.

That’s a benefit from buying into pedigrees we own and that we’re trying not only to sustain, but to move forward.

While Sikura says all sales throughout each year are significant, he notes that certainly November is an exciting time. What you see in November will produce the stars for the future – those first-crop sires who turn out to be brilliant, important sires, those famous racemares who are retired who will be the future producers of stars. It’s kind of like foaling season. It’s the start of a new cycle .

He adds: It’s important for us to be a part of it, and for the entire business to gauge where things are moving. The November sales help set stud fee markets and a lot of things, so it’s really a reset on the marketplace. In November, you’re now into a new cycle.

We’re excited to be over there. We’re fully prepared.

US BREEDING-STOCK SALES

RADE 1-WINNING racemares and producers and regally-bred foals hog the headlines at Fasig-Tipton and Keeneland each November but important business takes place further down the market too – especially for European breeders looking for value.

There are many proven producers or breeding prospects on offer at the Kentucky breeding-stock sales who might have been bred in Europe but found their way to America, or fillies and mares by sires and/or with pedigrees that carry transatlantic relevance.

Take the unraced Theatrical mare Green Room, for example: she went unsold for $280,000 at the Keeneland November Sale of 2005 but was purchased by Templeton Railton Farms for $240,000 in the same ring the following January.

The now 16-year-old mare, out of a sister to Al Bahathri, has produced three Group/ Grade 1 winners for breeders Vimal and Gillian Khosla – Lord Shanakill, Together Forever and this year’s Oaks heroine Forever Together – and yearlings who have amassed around €6 million at auction, including the Galileo filly who topped this year’s Goffs Orby Sale at €3.2m.

Another notable example of a Keeneland November mid-market mare purchase that paid off across the pond was the aptly named Atlantic Destiny, a Listed-winning Royal Academy half-sister to Royal Whip Stakes winner Make No Mistake bought by Newsells Park Stud for $375,000 in 2002.

The Hertfordshire operation bred from the mare four stakes performers headed by the doughty Lightning Spear, who gained richly-deserved Group 1 laurels for the first time in the Sussex Stakes at the age of seven this year.

Here’s a tentative pick of ten mares available at auction in Kentucky next month – away from the obvious potential seven-figure mares with European roots such as A Raving Beauty, Cover Song and Pretty Perfect – who could be the next Green Room or Atlantic Destiny at a reasonable price.

Blessed Silence, a broodmare prospect who was twice a Listed runner-up in her native France and Grade 3-placed in the US, is one of 47 stakes performers for Siyouni. She has pedigree appeal on the bottom half of her pedigree too, as she is out of a winning half-sister to Listed-winning two-year-old Light The Fire and descended from the Group 3-winning Danehill mare Ardana.

Colonia

Her value increased again this month when she landed the Grade 3 Pin Oak Valley View Stakes at Keeneland.

Colonia, being offered as a racing or breeding prospect, is out of a Muhtathir half-sister to Group 2 winner Don Bosco from the family of dual Arc heroine Enable.
