Sales to whet the appetite and suit all budgets

ITH the Breeders’ Cup being held at Santa Anita next month, a day’s grace has been served up when it comes to the breeding-stock sales in Kentucky. Rather than beginning on the Monday after the big two-day race meeting, the sales will start this year on Tuesday, November 5, so giving potential buyers in particular more time to travel to Kentucky from California. Fasig-Tipton’s select one-day session, featuring 200-plus entries and supplements, fires the starting pistol, and huge focus will be on the sale given that 22 of the 140 sold last year went for $1 million or more topped by Lady Aurelia, who was hammered down to Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings for a whopping $7.5m. At the same auction, Stopchargingmaria drew a cool $4.4m winning bid from Mandy Pope’s Whisper Hill. Pope, of course, was headline news recently when outbidding Coolmore and Sheikh Mohammed, among others, at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale when parting with $8.2m for a half-sister to Beholder, Into Mischief and Mendelssohn. This year’s Fasig-Tipton poster girl could be Midnight Bisou. The four-year-old daughter of Midnight Lute is a five-time Grade 1 winner who is ante-post favourite for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, run three days before the sale. Keeneland catalogued 4,549 horses for its breeding sale before supplements, which starts on November 6 and runs to the 17th. That original figure is broken down as 2,134 broodmares and broodmare prospects, 1,932 weanlings, 476 horses of racing age and seven stallions. Among the standout offerings are Lil Indy, dam of multiple Grade 1 winner Maximum Security and in foal to Quality Road (her weanling filly who is a sister to Maximum Security is also cataloged); champion and multiple Grade 1 winner Take Charge Brandi, who is in foal to Justify; and Molly Corbin, a half-sister to Peeping Fawn and Thewayyouare and from the family of Broodmares of the Year Better Than Honour and Best in Show. She is also offered in foal to Justify. Eight hips sold for $1m or more at Keeneland’s breeding-stock sale last year headed by Lady Eli at $4.2m and My Miss Sophia at $4m. Spiced Perfection 4yo b Smiling Tiger-Perfect Feat (Pleasantly Perfect) Keeneland, hip 93; consigned by Elite, agent Spiced Perfection was the winner of the Grade 1 La Brea Stakes at Santa Anita last year by clear water and added a second elite victory to her CV this season in the Madison Stakes at Keeneland. On her last start she took the Grade 2 Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes, gaining her an automatic berth in next month’s Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at Santa Anita. The four-year-old, who will be offered at Keeneland as a racing or broodmare prospect, is by Grade 1-winning sprinter Smiling Tiger and is a sister to stakes winner Cruel Intention. Spiced Perfection was once knocked down for just $6,500 at the Barretts Fall sale at Del Mar. She will make a far sight more than that now with those achievements under her belt.

She took the scalp of Mia Mischief – another top-level winner set to be offered by Elite at Fasig-Tipton, as hip 150 – in the Grade 1 Test Stakes at three and was a wide-margin Grade 3 winner this year at four. Separationofpowers is a Candy Ride half-sister to stakes winner Empire Of War out of an Empire Maker half-sister to another stakes winner in Fusa Code.

Wonder Gadot 4yo dk b/br Medaglia D’Oro-Loving Vindication (Vindication) Fasig-Tipton, hip 196; consigned by Bluewater Sales A Canadian champion at two and her country’s Horse of the Year at three, Wonder Gadot should be in strong demand at Fasig-Tipton. She was a six-length Grade 3 winner at Woodbine and travelled south to take the Grade 2 Demoiselle Stakes at Aqueduct at two, and nearly stunned American racing again at three when she outran big odds to finish a half-length second to Monomoy Girl in the Kentucky Oaks. Back at home she was a head second in the Woodbine Oaks and a wide-margin winner of the Queen’s Plate and Prince of Wales Stakes. Wonder Gadot is impeccably bred, being by Medaglia D’Oro and a sister to stakes winner Solemn Tribute out of a half-sister to the dam of Beholder Mile winner Secret Spice – who is also offered at Fasig-Tipton, by Elite as hip 175.

She is by Candy Ride, sire of superstars Game Winner, Gun Runner and Shared Belief and damsire of Grade 1 winners Hog Creek Hustle and Sporting Chance, out of Grade 3 winner Afternoon Stroll, making her a half-sister to stakes performer Celestial Sighting. On the track she won the Grade 2 Summertime Oaks and took second in the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks at three, and gained a deserved success at the highest level at four this year in the Clement L Hirsch Stakes.

Take Charge Brandi 7yo ch Giant’s Causeway-Charming (Seeking The Gold) Keeneland, hip 111; consigned by Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency The daughter of Giant’s Causeway was overwhelmingly voted America’s champion two-year-old of 2014 after winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies and Starlet Stakes; at the end of her three-year-old season she was sold as a breeding prospect to John Sikura at Keeneland November for a sale-topping $6 million. Four years later she will be reoffered by Sikura’s Hill ‘n’ Dale Farm to disperse stock owned by Elevage, with her first foal – the two-year-old colt Take Charge Curlin – having sold as a yearling for $850,000. She also has yearling and foal colts by Tapit and is offered in foal to Triple Crown hero Justify. Take Charge Brandi already looked supremely well bred in 2015 as she is out of Charming, a daughter of Seeking The Gold and multiple Grade 1 winner Take Charge Lady, making the dam a half-sister to fellow top-level scorers Take Charge Indy and Will Take Charge. But in the intervening period Charming has also featured as dam of Omaha Beach, who has earned immense respect this year for landing the Arkansas Derby over nine furlongs and the Santa Anita Sprint Championship over six, and Courage Under Fire, runner-up to Caravaggio in the Phoenix Stakes.

Conquest 4yo b Galileo-Lillie Langtry (Danehill Dancer) Keeneland, hip 208; consigned by Denali Stud, agent In normal consequences, a nine times-raced maiden who failed to win or even place being offered as an untried broodmare would not be singled out as a sale highlight. But Conquest is something quite extraordinary. She is by Galileo out of dual Group 1 winner Lillie Langtry, making her a sister to the exceptional Minding, victorious in seven top-flight contests, and Group 3 scorer Kissed By Angels. A member of Justify’s first book of mares, and successfully in foal, Conquest will be the first daughter of Lillie Langtry to be offered at public auction and so ranks as a rare chance to get into a great family.

Photo Call 8yo b Galileo-Theann (Rock Of Gibraltar) Fasig-Tipton, hip 166; consigned by Denali Stud, agent Photo Call has got it all. Pedigree? Tick. She is a Galileo half-sister to Richmond Stakes winner Land Force out of Group 3 winner Theann, a daughter of Rock Of Gibraltar and fine sprinter Cassandra Go, who also produced Classic heroine Halfway To Heaven, dam of Group winners Magical and Rhododendron. Performance? Tick. She struck twice in elite company, most notably when defeating Tepin by nearly three lengths in the First Lady Stakes. Physique? Tick. She would not have made $3 million at Keeneland after her first Grade 1 success had she not been blessed with good looks as well as ability. And an attractive cover? Another tick. She is in foal to Quality Road, having produced a War Front filly last year and an Uncle Mo colt this season.

Midnight Bisou 4yo dk b/br Midnight Lute-Diva Delite (Repent) Fasig-Tipton, hip 151; consigned by Elite, agent The sale of Midnight Bisou should be a showstopper. The daughter of Midnight Lute and Florida Oaks winner Diva Delite (herself available to buy, in foal to Justify, as hip 173) gave a hint of her immense talent at two when she ran the top-class Dream Tree to a nose when second in Listed company at Del Mar. She enjoyed a famous rivalry with Monomoy Girl at three last year, finishing third to her foe in the Kentucky Oaks and Breeders’ Cup Distaff but mastering her in the Cotillion Stakes. This year at four Midnight Bisou has been unbeaten in seven starts, including in the Apple Blossom Handicap, Ogden Phipps Stakes, Personal Ensign Stakes and Beldame Stakes and could go under the hammer fresh from a victory in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, a race she is the early favourite for.

Bellafina 3yo b Quality Road-Akron Moon (Malibu Moon) Fasig-Tipton, hip 135; consigned by Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency Bellafina has a fine pedigree, being by hotshot sire Quality Road out of the talented Malibu Moon mare Akron Moon, making her a half-sister to stakes winner and Grade 2-placed Diamond King. Granddam Akronism was also a classy customer and also produced Grade 2 scorer Have At It. She maintained family honour by striking twice at Grade 1 level at two last year – in the Del Mar Debutante and Chandelier Stakes – by a combined 11 lengths before finishing a fair fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. Earlier this year Bellafina reeled off victories in the Grade 2 Santa Ynez Stakes (by eight and a half lengths), Grade 2 Las Virgenes Stakes and Grade 1 Santa Anita Oaks (by five and a quarter lengths) before running fifth in the Kentucky Oaks, third in the Test Stakes and fourth in the Cotillion.

‘There’s plenty of opportunity for people who might want to buy into these families’

AKING a somewhat more forward position in North America’s leading commercial marketplace for bloodstock, Prince Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte Farms has entered a group of ten mares and 15 fillies in the Keeneland November Sale, topped by Multilingual, a seven-year-old half-sister to Kingman. While Juddmonte has sold fillies and mares at Keeneland in the past, those offerings have typically entered the ring without designation as being owned by the farm. This year, however, Juddmonte has appended its name to the sale entrants, which will be handled by five consignors. Mill Ridge Sales, which has consigned Juddmonte horses in the past, will present the majority this year, with Lane’s End, Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency, Timber Town and Taylor Made Sales Agency also involved. “We’ve been trying to get our numbers to a controllable level at the request of Prince Khalid,” says Juddmonte’s American manager Garrett O’Rourke of the decision to consign the fillies and mares, while also indicating that those sold in any given year can depend on a variety of factors. “We’ve got a lot of two-year-olds who we’ll keep to race in America next year, a really nice crop and a big crop as well, so I think we’re making room for a lot of them. This is a year when we have a lot [of rising juveniles] by American dirt sires, so they’ll stay to race over here. Just like everybody else, we need to make room.” The Juddmonte team, while aiming to keep the operation’s American broodmare band at a total of around 75, conducts a review before deciding which fillies and mares to keep and which to sell, and O’Rourke says that process can be “a head-scratcher for us to figure out”. He observes of the sale offerings: “Sometimes the good runners aren’t the good producers and sometimes the half-sisters are producers, so there’s plenty of opportunity for people who might want to

buy into some of these families now.” Multilingual, a daughter of Dansili and Poule d’Essai des Pouliches winner Zenda, by Zamindar, raced only once for trainer John Gosden, finishing sixth of 17 in a maiden at Newbury. However, her superlative genes make her a standout among the Juddmonte females catalogued at Keeneland, and she is in foal to Frankel’s brother Noble Mission on a February cover. O’Rourke says: “She fits into the category of we can’t keep all the half-sisters to all the top horses. “She’s a good-looking mare and she’s a young mare – we’re

putting her in the sale before we’ve really found out whether she can or can’t produce, and I think that’s fair for anyone who wants to buy her. Obviously she’s got the most amazing page and I think she’ll be in great demand. “She won’t disappoint [those who inspect her] because she’s a good looker. She’ll be a big opportunity for someone to get into this family.” With Zenda a half-sister to Oasis Dream, the family offers some of the crème de la crème of Juddmonte breeding. ULTILINGUAL was sent to America to begin her broodmare career as a four-year-old and, so far, she has produced three colts for Juddmonte: Tilsit, a now juvenile by First Defence who has been sent to Britain; a yearling by English Channel; and a weanling by Kitten’s Joy. She is catalogued as hip 734 at Keeneland and thus is set to be offered in the third session. Juddmonte achieved a large

measure of success with its 2018 Keeneland November mares. Although those individuals were not designated in the catalogue as owned by the farm, at least 20 were sold under the Mill Ridge banner for a total of $2.4 million. Topping that group was Miss Exclusive, who also led the overall third session of the 2018 November Sale when selling for $750,000 to Mt Brilliant Farm. The then six-year-old daughter of Unbridled’s Song out of champion Intercontinental – thus a granddaughter of stellar broodmare Hasili – had also been bred to Noble

Juddmonte also offered another half-sister to Kingman in 2018, selling the then 12-year-old Rio Carnival, a daughter of Storm Cat, for $270,000. Rio Carnival was sent to Ireland, where she produced a Twirling Candy colt for Newtown Anner Stud in April. “We sold some for big prices last year and I think we’ve got a few in there this year who can make big prices as well,” says O’Rourke. In addition to the fillies and mares Juddmonte has entered in this year’s November Sale, the farm also has two unraced three-year-old colts and three geldings listed as racing prospects. Leading that group is Frankel’s five-year-old gelded son Monarchs Glen, a Group 3 winner in Britain who has competed in several prominent Grade/Group 1 races including the 2018 Dubai Turf and who is catalogued as hip 2715 in the Mill Ridge consignment. Projected, a seven-year-old Grade 2-winning Showcasing gelding who has earned more than $600,000, is hip 2724 with Mill Ridge.

High-profile stallions with their initial produce on offer at this year’s November breeding stock sales

HE public debut of first foals by high-profile stallions who took up stud duty in the previous year is annually among the most highly anticipated aspects of the November breeding-stock sales season. Gun Runner, the 2017 American Horse of the Year and winner of six Grade 1 races, and Arrogate, the 2016 champion three-year-old who won four of the most prestigious events on the planet, including a spectacular edition of the Dubai World Cup, lead this year’s first-crop sires of sale weanlings. Overall, at least 28 young stallions comprise the group with first-sale weanlings and together they have sired about 500 individuals catalogued for the Fasig-Tipton and Keeneland November Sales. Fifteen of these stallions garnered Grade 1 trophies while racing and, of this elite group, Quality Road’s precocious son Klimt, who stands at Darby Dan Farm, has the most weanlings set for the sales with a total of 57 after covering 222 mares last year at a fee of $10,000. Yet most eyes will first focus on Gun Runner and Arrogate, who together amassed more than $33 million while racing, with Juddmonte Farms’ Arrogate reigning as North America’s all-time leading earner after banking $17.482m and Gun Runner second among all-time earners trained on the continent. Since Juddmonte limited Arrogate’s first book to 145 mares and supported the stallion with about 20 of its own broodmares, it is not surprising that the record-setter does not lead by number of weanlings in the catalogues. He has two at Fasig-Tipton and seven at Keeneland, including three in Book 1. Some of the most glittering of the Arrogate weanlings based on pedigree include hip 36 at Fasig-Tipton, a dark bay half-brother to Grade 1 winner Denman’s Call; hip 101 at Keeneland, a grey half-brother to champion Hansen; and hip 704 at Keeneland, a grey half-sister to Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint winner Wavell Avenue. Juddmonte’s American manager Garrett O’Rourke planned to inspect all the Arrogate weanlings entered in the sales well before the auctions were to begin and was already hearing upbeat reports. “I’ve been told that even those I haven’t seen so far are very nice foals and, most importantly, very good approximations of what the stallion is throwing, which is

Arrogate and Gun Runner lead way among first-season foal sires definitely a specific type – a very athletic type,” says O’Rourke. “From a sale point of view, the ones in the catalogues look good. The half-sister to Wavell Avenue I have seen, and she’s a lovely filly. She walks like Arrogate and she’s his colour; she’s got probably a little more of the rear end of the mare, but everything else is such that you can just look at her straight away and say, ‘That really looks like an Arrogate’. “I know the half-brother to Denman’s Call is a star. The others I still need to see, but the reports are very strong on them.” As to Juddmonte’s own Arrogate weanlings, O’Rourke says they seem to be consistent in quality. He says: “What we have is a lovely mixture of the stallion and then the exceptional mares they are out of; an awful lot of them are out of Grade 1 racemares and Grade 1 producers. So, you definitely want quite a percentage of the Arrogate to come through, but we’re not afraid of the mares coming through when they’re at that level. “We have a lovely colt out of [multiple Grade 1 winner] Paulassilverlining, an exceptional colt out of [Grade 2 winner and multiple Grade 1-placed] Filimbi and a really exceptional filly out of Soothing Touch and thus a half-sister to [multiple Grade 1-placed] Hofburg and [multiple Grade 1 winner] Emollient. That filly is a real star.

“But lots of them are what I’d call rock-solid foals who have Arrogate’s scope and his athleticism. You’d look at one and think, ‘By the time I look at him at this point next year, I’ll probably be calling him a superstar’. “There’s very little variation between our best and our least. I can’t point to any of them who I’d be shocked at if they turned out to be Graded stakes horses.” A son of Unbridled’s Song, Arrogate stands for $75,000 at Juddmonte’s farm in Lexington. In addition to Juddmonte’s blueblooded mares, Arrogate covered more than 25 Grade 1 winners or producers from other breeders during his initial season. Meanwhile, enthusiasm is just as high for Gun Runner at Three Chimneys Farm, which stands the son of Candy Ride for $70,000.

Gun Runner was bred to 171 mares in his initial season at stud and is represented by three weanlings in the Fasig-Tipton catalogue and another 18 at Keeneland, where nine of his offspring are featured in Book 1. Tom Hamm, Three Chimneys’ director of stallion nominations, says: “We’re very pleased with them – they’re very athletic, very balanced and very classy horses. I like what I see going into the November sales. I’ve seen over 100 of them and I’m very impressed.” Hamm noted that the sale weanlings are only a fraction of what is to come in forthcoming years for Gun Runner and his initial crop as they turn into yearlings and then his first runners as two-year-olds. “While there are some exceptional weanlings out there [for the sales], I know there are some exceptional ones who are out of Graded stakes mares or Graded stakes-producing mares who aren’t going to be in the November sales because we’re keeping them to sell later or race them.” Among the Gun Runners set for the sales, hip 17 at Keeneland is a standout based on pedigree as the bay colt bred by the Australian-based Austramore Pty Ltd is out of a winning half-sister to the dam of Triple Crown winner Justify. Other notable sale weanlings by Gun Runner are hip 129 at Gun Runner: has sired “very athletic, very balanced and very classy horses”

Keeneland, a half-brother to recent Grade 1 winner and $1.77m earner Arklow, and hip 990, a half-brother to Grade 1 winner Finley’sluckycharm and from the family of Grade 1 winners Pure Clan and Sky Diva. Gun Runner’s first book included 64 black-type stakes winners, 28 Graded stakes winners and 51 producers of stakes winners, with 41 of those producing Graded winners, Hamm said. While the spotlight may be shining most brightly on Gun Runner and Arrogate, Pioneerof The Nile’s son Classic Empire, the 2016 champion juvenile male, will also be well represented at the sales after covering 185 mares in his initial season at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud for a fee of $35,000. Classic Empire’s 38 weanlings catalogued at Keeneland begin with hip 2, a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Lady Ivanka, and include hip 122, a filly out of a half-sister to Grade 1 winners Coil and Chiropractor. Coolmore has two other first-crop weanling sires who have been well patronised by breeders: Tapit’s Grade 1-winning son Cupid, who was bred to 223 mares in 2018 and who has 31 weanlings in the sales, and Into Mischief’s multiple Grade 1 winner Practical Joke, who was visited by 220 mares and has 39 weanlings in the auctions. covered 163 mares last year, has two offspring at Fasig-Tipton and 40 at Keeneland, while Unified, a multiple Graded winner by Candy Ride, will be represented by 39 weanlings at Keeneland. Claiborne Farm’s Mastery, another son of Candy Ride who impressed as an undefeated Grade 1 winner before suffering a career-ending injury early in his three-year-old season, was bred to 139 mares in his first year at stud and has three weanlings at Fasig-Tipton and 22, including four in Book 1, at Keeneland. Other intriguing first-crop sires of weanlings include Grade 1 winner Lord Nelson, who survived an injury and subsequent laminitis to cover 127 mares at Spendthrift Farm and who has 20 foals in the sale catalogues, and his Spendthrift stablemate and fellow Grade 1 winner Gormley, who has 31 foals catalogued after covering 180 mares in his first season at stud. Also among the Grade 1 winners with first weanlings are Keen Ice, Midnight Storm, Bal A Bali and Greenpointcrusader. Star-crossed Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Battle Of Midway, who proved subfertile and later suffered a fatal injury after being returned to training, is represented by one of his five reported weanlings. Hip 1 at Fasig-Tipton is a Battle Of Midway filly out of the stakes-placed Lemon Drop Kid mare You’re Kidding.

US BREEDING STOCK SALES KEENELAND

Michele MacDonald on the powerful band of fillies and mares being consigned by Godolphin in Kentucky next month

OR only the second time in its history Godolphin will consign fillies and mares under its own name at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, choosing to handle its own offerings as it has long done in Europe. Sheikh Mohammed’s global breeding operation has entered 36 broodmares for the world’s largest sale of bloodstock, following up on the 58 consigned by Godolphin to the 2017 November Sale. Of that group, 51 were reported sold for a total of $3.912 million. Dan Pride, chief operating officer for Godolphin’s American division, said this year’s mix of young mares with some that have already produced several foals will give buyers special opportunities to access families that have achieved distinction in both Europe and America. “From big owner-breeders like us, people have had tremendous success buying,” Pride observes. “There’s no magic formula that says you’re keeping the right ones or selling the wrong ones, or vice versa. People will have success off this. That’s part of it. “The horses will be well looked after and well inspected, and I know they’ll be popular. There will be some great buys that, in three or four years, people will be happy they own.” All but one of the mares consigned are catalogued as pregnant, with most carrying foals by Godolphin-owned stallions. Five are listed in foal to Nyquist, who is currently North America’s leading first-crop sire of sale yearlings by average ($243,667) and median price ($225,000). While the Godolphin mares will not begin to step into the ring until the fourth day of the 12-session sale, they include half-sisters and offspring of champions and Grade 1 winners. Among the most eyecatching pedigrees of those in the catalogue is hip 1377, Caramel Snap, an unraced ten-year-old daughter of Smart Strike who is a half-sister to Godolphin’s multiple Grade 1 winner and popular young stallion Frosted. That son of Tapit ranks second only to Nyquist with his first-crop yearlings by average price this year, while he has had many more offered and sold. Caramel Snap is in foal on a May cover to Street Sense, sire of Godolphin’s homebred juvenile Grade 1-winning son Maxfield, who could have a say in year-end championship

‘There’s no magic formula that says you’re keeping the right ones or selling the wrong ones’ honours. The mare has a yearling filly by Union Rags and a weanling filly by Bernardini. Hip 1357 is seven-year-old Bespoken, an unraced daughter of Bernardini and Grade 1 winner Well Chosen, by Deputy Minister. Bespoken is a three-quarter sister to Grade 1 winner Telling and her family includes Grade 1 winner Leofric. Three-year-old Beautify, by Lemon Drop Kid, is out of champion Ashado and is a half-sister to stakes winner Westwood. A winner at two, Beautify is in foal to Bernardini and is catalogued as hip 1354. Others with close

connections to champions include hip 1308, 11-year-old Vaguely Familiar, a half-sister to American champion filly Questing and dam of this season’s multiple British juvenile winner Homespin, and hip 1388, 12-year-old Channel, a daughter of Storm Cat and half-sister to American champion filly Tempera. Vaguely Familiar is in foal to Tiznow and Channel is carrying a foal by Hard Spun. Overall, the Godolphin consignment features four daughters of A.P. Indy, four by Bernardini and four by Street Sense. Nine of the mares are in foal to Medaglia D’Oro’s young Australian-bred son Astern,

including hip 1178, three-year-old Out Of Danger, a daughter of Ghostzapper and Grade 1 winner Flashing and a half-sister to French stakes winner Floodlight.

RIDE says he prefers not to disclose how many mares Godolphin currently maintains in its American broodmare band. Several Godolphin staff members regularly review the operation’s bloodstock holdings and make recommendations on which mares to keep and which might be sold. “We look at families in

which we maybe have a lot of representation and we have some flexibility to sell a daughter when we have four or five other daughters,” says Pride. “There are a group of us who work on it and it’s something we spent time on, starting with the matings last year. “A lot of these decisions would have been penciled in during matings last year and carried forward this year. We review it several times over the year prior to the deadline to enter the mares [to the sale] in August. “We don’t have a target number [for the broodmare band]. We try to look at them as individual horses and try to keep the ones we feel give us the best opportunity for the future.” With those mares who are chosen to be sold, Godolphin has found that there are advantages in managing the sales process instead of turning the horses over to consignors.

“The main one is that we know the horses better than anyone and we’ll staff the consignment with 100 per cent our own full-time staff,” explains Pride. “Representatives from the farms where they came from will be there to answer any and all questions. “We’re trying to give prospective buyers as much information and knowledge about each mare. We’ll have everything available and prospective buyers will have access to it. “Another benefit we saw when we did this two years ago is that it’s also a great project for the team. A lot of staff who don’t work directly with each other every day come together, so it’s also a great team-building process.” Leading the Godolphin sale horses at the 2017 Keeneland November Sale was Midnight Watch, a then seven-year-old Saratoga stakes winner by Stormy Atlantic whose third dam is Broodmare of the Year Weekend Surprise, dam of A.P. Indy. Calumet Farm, which bought five individuals, including a trio by A.P. Indy led by the $100,000 mare Cheeky Charm, set the pace among buyers of Godolphin mares in 2017. That purchase might turn out to be particularly fortuitous as Cheeky Charm is a three-quarter sister to the Bernardini mare Velvety, dam of Maxfield, and a half-sister to Grade 1 winner and sire Sky Mesa. Cheeky Charm was in foal to Street Sense when she was sold and she produced a now yearling colt who is a three-quarter brother to Maxfield.

Bittersweet anxiety for proud owner as Midnight Bisou sale date approaches Michele MacDonald talks to Jeffrey Bloom about his pride and joy who is entered to sell at Fasig-Tipton, as is the star filly’s dam

HILE her distinctive qualities can be appreciated by almost anyone now, the dark bay filly’s movement, the flash in her eyes and her alluring aura of charisma spoke most clearly to Jeffrey Bloom on a Florida spring day in 2017. Stepping forward at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s April juvenile auction, the former jockey and current managing director of Bloom Racing Stable bid $80,000 on the daughter of Midnight Lute, feeling as certain as a buyer can that she was going to be a meaningful addition to his stable’s roster. While he could not have imagined that the filly, later named Midnight Bisou, would blossom into a champion who has triumphed in five Grade 1 stakes and never finished worse than third while earning more than $3.4 million going into the 2019 Breeders’ Cup, he instinctively knew she was special. “She just had an exceptional presence,” Bloom recalls. “There’s a certain statuesque elegance and professional air that she just has. She’s just gotten more impressive and developed more, but she’s always had that incredible demeanour about her.” Bloom and partners Charles and Lori Allen of Allen Racing and Sol Kumin of Madaket Stables now stand at a crossroads with Midnight Bisou, who they entered in the Fasig-Tipton November Sale at the pinnacle of her success. With seven wins in seven starts this year, Midnight Bisou, catalogued as hip 151 in the Elite consignment, could enter the Newtown Paddocks sales ring a perfect eight-for-eight if she lands the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. While Midnight Bisou is the

highly anticipated headline act among the broodmare prospects on offer in Kentucky next month, Fasig-Tipton has also secured her 12-year-old dam, the Repent mare Diva Delite, as an exciting supporting star in the sale that has become known for fireworks. Since she is among the first mares to sell in foal to Triple Crown winner Justify, Diva Delite has two very significant claims to fame prior to taking her turn in the ring as hip 173 from the Taylor Made Sales Agency consignment. Sold at the same venue last year for $750,000 to Breeze Easy, a partnership involving West Virginia-based natural gas executives Mike Hall and Sam Ross, Diva Delite looked to be a long-term investment for their broodmare band that currently numbers 32. However, Hall said that Midnight Bisou’s tremendous performances over the year convinced the Breeze Easy partners that the time would be right to resell Diva Delite, particularly since she is in foal to Justify. “It’s going to be exciting, for sure,” Hall says in looking towards the sale and suggesting the presence of both the mare and her famous daughter should kindle interest among buyers. Diva Delite foaled a dark bay colt by Pioneerof The Nile on May 1 and Breeze Easy – which has campaigned the likes of Norfolk Stakes winner Shang Shang Shang – intends to keep him for the foreseeable future. “Our plans probably would be to keep the colt and put him into our racing stable,” says Hall. “Plans can change, but we’re very happy with the foal. He’s actually a beautiful foal. That gives us something in that family to put into our racing stable.”

It is a different kind of story for Midnight Bisou’s owners. There is more than just a little twinge of bittersweet anxiety for Bloom in anticipating the filly being led into the sales ring. While he and his partners were pondering a reserve price for Midnight Bisou, who is listed as a racing or broodmare prospect, he said that it will take “a lot” to secure her. “She’s in that rarefied air, on that different level, in a different category,” reflects Bloom, adding that thinking about what his feelings might be at the time of the auction is daunting because there are so many pulls on his heart and mind. “My kids are still not talking to me, knowing that she’s entered in a sale. She’s become a part of our family. There isn’t a day that goes by when we’re not having some kind of thought or conversation about Midnight Bisou. But then you have to remember that this is a business. “We’ve had such an incredible experience with her from start to finish. We’re enjoying every minute of it. How is the sale going to feel? I kind of know how it’s going to feel, but I’m trying not to think about it right now and embrace what we have in front of us as we make our way toward the Breeders’ Cup.” Depending on the Breeders’ Cup results at Santa Anita, Midnight Bisou could be very much in the conversation for America’s Horse of the Year title. Although the honours won’t be decided until January, a previous Horse of the Year sold as a broodmare prospect, Saint Liam’s daughter Havre De Grace, eliciting a record bid of $10 million from Mandy Pope at the 2012 Fasig-Tipton November Sale. Two years ago Pope returned to Newtown Paddocks to secure multiple champion Songbird, a daughter of Medaglia D’Oro offered as a broodmare prospect, for $9.5m. In 2005 four-year-old Ashado, by Saint Ballado, was sold at Keeneland as a broodmare prospect, bringing $9m from Sheikh Mohammed about two months before she officially earned her second divisional championship. But there is so much more than the prospect of big dollars when it comes to Midnight Bisou, who seems to have

made a deep impression on everyone who has been connected to her. In fact, she is something of a rags-to-riches tale in that her breeder Woodford Thoroughbreds had to take her home when she did not meet her reserve price at the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. “We bought her back for $19,000,” recalls John Gleason, who oversees Woodford’s training and farm operations in Ocala. “She was kind of average, a borderline small filly, light-framed and a little fine-boned, but a really good mover with a big, scopey shoulder. So we took her to the two-year-old sale. “When we were breaking her, she was pretty tough the first three or four weeks. The grit, the fire we see coming down the lane in her races, she had that then too. “Once she got through the initial breaking process she settled down and trained well. She was a really good mover on the track, never sick and never sore, and just went about her business every day.” When Midnight Bisou would be turned out for a few hours in a paddock, she let the Woodford staff know that it did not please her to have to go back in to the barn. “Most of the

time we’d have to take the pony horse over to the gate to get her caught – she’d stay out and run circles and not want to come in,” says Gleason with a chuckle. “She’s always had a little bit of an edge to her. I think that’s the determination that makes her so good on the racetrack.”

IDNIGHT BISOU’S evolution into a superstar has been a one-of-a-kind endorsement for both Woodford and Bloom. “She’s the pinnacle of why we get out of bed every morning,” says Gleason. “I’ve never said this but I’ve thought this in the back of my mind: I hope whoever buys her races her for another year so we can keep following her and rooting

for her. It’s been so much fun.” Bloom, whose Bloom Racing Stable is involved in pinhooking and bloodstock in addition to racing partnerships, adds: “She’s certainly increased the awareness about our brand, what we do, how our programme works. You can’t buy that sort of attention or exposure. It’s just a gift, it’s a dream come true. “It’s something that I don’t now, nor will I ever, take for granted because I know how fortunate I am to have had it work out that way.” Bloom also has Grade 1 winner Henley’s Joy, trained by Mike Maker, and multiple stakes winner and millionaire Snapper Sinclair, who, like Midnight Bisou is trained by Steve Asmussen, in his current stable. But Midnight Bisou, trained early in her career by Bill Spawr, will likely always stand out in his mind. He says: “She was a horse I really had to have. Quite honestly, from the time the hammer dropped [at OBS] and we got her into the programme we had going in California, we were impressed. “Throughout the whole process of her getting fit and learning, she always just did what you wanted her to do. She couldn’t have done more to make our job easier. We noticed it from the get-go with her.” Bloom has turned down a barrage of offers for the filly that kept his phone ringing from the time she made her debut as a juvenile. “When she dominated the California [three-year-old filly] division and won those three Graded

stakes in a row, finishing up with the Santa Anita Oaks, there were all kinds of inquiries,” he reveals. “We were really close, like in the final hour, to closing a deal prior to the Kentucky Oaks, but it ended up not coming together. There were literally dozens of inquiries from people wanting to buy her. “It’s tough – you just never know what’s the right number. There isn’t a manual out there for that sort of thing.”

LOOM stressed that he was not in a rush to exchange Midnight Bisou for a quick return, adding: “We knew what we had on our hands and we were just so incredibly attached to this filly.” Midnight Bisou finished a rallying third, coming from far back, in the Kentucky Oaks, but her best days have come this year aged four. As a former jockey and exercise rider for top trainers – including the late Charlie Whittingham, for whom he rode champion Sunday Silence in morning work – Bloom also has the special perspective of having galloped Midnight Bisou at Monmouth Park prior to her victory in the Molly Pitcher Stakes in July. “She was just an absolute princess, she didn’t make a wrong move and I didn’t fall off,” he says, laughing. “I’ve

been on some incredible horses, but to be able to get on my own and for it to be Midnight Bisou, it was pretty darned cool. “She’s one of those horses who, around the barn, is very friendly and charming and just warm and engaging, and then the saddle goes on her and she’s like, ‘Go!’” Bloom expresses hope that Midnight Bisou’s season will be crowned with championship laurels. “I’ve been in the game a long time and I know what the significance is of having a champion,” he says. “It would be incredibly special on so many levels. I’ve been around a lot of good horses in a lot of different capacities, and it’s so rare. It’s just such a special thing to be close to one like that.”

UNDEFEATED Triple Crown winner Justify and Grade 1 winner Mendelssohn, two sons of Scat Daddy set to continue their sire’s impressive legacy at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud, stand atop a list of more than 20 first-year covering sires who will be represented at the November bloodstock sales in Kentucky. That duo is ably accompanied by a trio of champions: West Coast, Accelerate and Good Magic, and another trio of Classic winners in Kentucky Derby victor Always Dreaming, Preakness Stakes hero Cloud Computing and Belmont Stakes conqueror Tapwrit. At least 11 other Grade 1 winners will also have their first mares in foal at the sales, including mile specialists City Of Light, Mor Spirit and Sharp Azteca; versatile turf and dirt performers Collected and Mo Town; juvenile standouts Bolt D’Oro and Free Drop Billy; and turf stars Oscar Performance and Funtastic.

Justify is the undeniable star this year and appears poised to make a strong market impact with his first mares. He begins the sale season with 11 in-foal mares at the Fasig-Tipton auction, topped by Diva Delite, dam of likely champion older female Midnight Bisou; Grade 1 winner Noted And Quoted; Eileen’s Dream, a half-sister to Grade 1 winner and producer Dream Rush; and the Grade 1-placed, stakes-winning Dubawi mare Crowley’s Law. Also included among the mares in foal to Justify at Fasig-Tipton are a pair of blueblooded four-year-olds by Galileo who were raced by the Coolmore partners, and they will be followed by a similar quartet of young Galileo mares at Keeneland in foal to the stallion. Among these Coolmore jewels are Hence, a Group 3-placed sister to multiple Group 1 winner Alice Springs who is catalogued as hip 128 at Fasig-Tipton; Conquest, a sister to European Horse of the Year Minding who is hip 208 at Keeneland; and

Hourglass, a half-sister to Shamardal and catalogued as hip 256 at Keeneland. Other owners and breeders have consigned such gems in foal to Justify as American champion Take Charge Brandi, hip 111 at Keeneland, and Molly Corbin, the War Front half-sister to European champion Peeping Fawn and Group 1 winner and sire Thewayyouare, hip 31 at Keeneland. Overall, there are 17 mares catalogued at Keeneland who were bred to Justify, although one is listed as not pregnant. While it would be impossible for another stallion to compete with the book of mares Coolmore has arranged for Justify, Mendelssohn (left) will also be well represented by mares he covered this spring. The half-brother to top sire Into Mischief and multiple champion Beholder possesses the pedigree equivalent to turbo power.

There is one mare in foal to Mendelssohn catalogued at Fasig-Tipton, the Grade 1-placed, Grade 3 winner Gitchee Goomie (hip 124), and another 26 at Keeneland, including several with European pedigree connections such as hip 688, Lady Baker, by Pioneerof The Nile out of German highweight Peace Royale and a half-sister to Group winner Peace In Motion. Looking at other first-year covering sires in both November sales, Quality Road’s multiple Grade 1-winning son City Of Light, who stands with his sire at Lane’s End, is the overall leader with a total of 38 mares in the catalogues. Good Magic, a son of Curlin based at Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms, and Spendthrift Farm’s Bolt D’Oro, by Medaglia D’Oro, are both represented by 31 mares in the sale catalogues. Mares in foal to Good Magic include Cassatt, a daughter of Tapit sold for $2.5m while in foal to Curlin in 2016 – she is hip 189 at Keeneland. F IT is a top-class racing filly, a proven producer of elite athletes or a regally bred mare in foal to a fashionable stallion that you want, then Fasig-Tipton’s ‘night of the stars’ and the opening Book 1 session of the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale are for you. If you do not have bottomless pockets and are content to ‘make do’ with merely a talented racecourse performer or a very well bred and attractive individual in foal to a tried and tested sire, then there are thousands more mares available to buy over the 11 other days of selling at Keeneland. Many have the credentials to produce progeny who will be successful in the ring or on the track and here we pinpoint 12 who, due to their pedigree or performances, hold particular appeal to European buyers and should not cost the earth. Perhaps one could be the next Green Room, the Theatrical mare who went unsold at $280,000 at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale of 2005 and was bought by Templeton Railton Farms for $40,000 less at the same company’s January fixture two months later. She has produced Group 1 winners Lord Shanakill, Forever Together and Together Forever and her yearlings have amassed more than €9 million in the ring.

HERE is no air of self-satisfaction when Brendan Gallagher assesses the strength of his 28-strong draft heading to the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale. The Irishman and his wife Olive might well be sitting handy now, but a decade ago, while attempting to manage their bloodstock business on one side of the Atlantic and the newly-acquired Frankfort Park Farm in Kentucky on the other, they were in nothing like such a prominent position. “We came out here ten years ago and when we originally got involved we were quarantining a lot of horses to go to Europe,” he recalls. “We bought a lot of horses in America just before the big dip, the crash. We were kind of committed here then, the bottom fell out of the market and we did what we could to survive.” There is a plethora of experience between the Gallaghers. Brendan worked for Gainesway Farm as a student in the early 1980s and assisted at Coolmore’s Kilsheelan Stud. Olive, meanwhile, is from Irish racing royalty as a daughter of Arkle’s jockey Pat Taaffe. Together they founded Emerald Bloodstock Services and were involved in trading, transporting and insuring horses across the planet. Initially, Frankfort was being managed remotely, but they were forced into a permanent move to America to keep themselves afloat, selling Emerald in 2009. “If we hadn’t come out here [to Kentucky] at that time we would have lost everything here,” says Brendan Gallagher. “It was difficult to run it from Ireland, that was the problem. It was a big transition because it’s different breeding horses here to Europe. There are similarities, but a lot of differences too. There’s the land, and here the horses tend to be a bit more forward; I always say you can wreck horses here easier because the place is so rich, you have to take it a bit easier. “The first years were very difficult. The market, to all intents and purposes, was a fraction of what it had been when we bought all the stock, and then you had a different way of racing the horses. It’s taken us a good while to get to grips with it, but the last couple of years have been great.” Frankfort Farm

Couple who have weathered the tough times and who are now reaping the rewards predominantly breeds and sells for itself and it has made a distinct impression lately through several of its alumni. One, Everfast, finished second to War Of Will in this year’s Preakness, while the other, Monomoy Girl, needs little introduction after a stream of major wins for trainer Brad Cox in 2018, including the Kentucky Oaks and Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Bred in partnership with Gainesway’s sales director Michael Hernon, they offered a Shackleford half-brother at the

lady when she was younger but she worked out great for us. She was temperamental but sometimes those very good fillies are. She definitely had that about her.”

HEY retain a strong link with Ireland, where there is still a breeding involvement, but the handful of individual Graded winners in the last couple of years has been one worthwhile reason to stick with Stateside life. Brendan

Gallagher has also been discovering other positive aspects of relocation, aside from just the scenic Bluegrass country. “With Emerald, we used to spend three or four weeks here anyway, so it wasn’t as if the place was completely foreign to us,” he says. “It’s a bigger pool over here and I think the whole thing is getting a little bit more global. Americans are more into turf horses now than they ever were, and there’s the prize-money.

The foal specialists FRANKFORT is a significant player with its younger stock and will be offering 19 weanlings along with nine broodmares at Keeneland. “We’ve concentrated on the foals; if you have the mare back on the farm, if anything happens then, it gives you that extra benefit,” Brendan Gallagher explains. “If you get a name for selling foals, more people are inclined to buy them off you, and we sell our best foals, we don’t hold them back to sell as yearlings, we sell everything. I suppose it gives people that extra bit of confidence when they buy your horses.” Gallagher picks out a handful of his draft, settling first on an American

Pharoah (hip 399) out of the Distorted Humor mare Sea Of Snow. “He’s a first foal out of a mare who was bought in Newmarket, she won two at two and was third in the Woodcote Stakes down the hill at Epsom on Derby day,” he says. “That’s a really fast race and he looks an out-and-out two-year-old, a very strong, fast horse. He’s a beauty.” Gallagher adds of a Dialed In filly out of Belle Chaussee (518): “She’s a half-sister to Belle Laura, who was Grade 2-placed, so she’s had big updates. Belle Chaussee is a nice young Giant’s Causeway mare, she’s in foal to Empire Maker this year. She’s exceptional, a really athletic sort of foal.”

He continues: “We bred four mares to Dialed In. His progeny averaged over $80,000 this year and they like him in Europe as well. For a horse who stands at $25,000 it’s impressive, and he’ll have his best runners coming on next year. “There’s a Bernardini mare Lady Hester [278] we’re also selling in Book 2 who has had a big update, her half-sister was third in a Grade 2 the other day, and Bernardini as a broodmare sire is flying now. “We’ve two nice Hard Spuns as well. Those in Book 2 would be the best ones we’d be selling in Keeneland, then there are other nice ones down through the books. We put a lot of effort into trying to produce those foals.”

“You can sit down on a Saturday here from one o’clock ’til eight or nine at night and watch Graded stakes races on the east and west coast – it’s exciting. “Then within 15 miles we’ve got all the big farms in Kentucky, we’re three miles from Keeneland and seven or eight from Fasig-Tipton. “With the travel and the logistics of that, it’s much easier to manage here. When we were based in Ireland, you’re spending half your time on ferries and planes. Having been in Emerald Bloodstock for as long as we were, we’d spent 15 or 16 years going to every sale in Europe, then we ended up in a spot where you didn’t have all that moving around.” Although those initial hard times would appear to be but a memory, Gallagher is swift to dispel any suggestions of complacency. “You’re never really on top of it, we’ll never know it all,” he affirms. “I believe nature wants to give you its best and we do a good job of trying to mess it up from time to time. The horses, if you stick as close as you can to nature and do all the little things as good as you can, that’s how we’re still going, I reckon.”

ANCY MARR MITCHELL and her ancestors have owned the gently undulating land of Clarkland Farm near Lexington for more than two centuries, extending back into the late 1700s, but none of the family members had ever experienced a year quite like this one. Mitchell and her husband Fred and daughter Marty Bucker, who together operate Clarkland, sold the $8.2 million yearling American Pharoah filly who made history last month as the most expensive yearling filly ever sold at Keeneland while also reigning as the overall sale-topper. With that landmark transaction on their books, the Clarkland team not only amassed resources that will guarantee a secure retirement for Nancy and Fred, who are octogenarians, but will also allow for reinvestment in some new broodmares at the November sales. “We’ll be looking for a couple of mares,” Fred Mitchell confirms. However, he was quick to note how difficult the polarising market dynamics that have prevailed in recent years have made life for smaller-scale breeders like Clarkland, most of which will never celebrate a record-breaking seven-figure sale. Not only can it be challenging to sell yearlings to recoup investments or make a profit, it is also not easy to find sensibly priced broodmares who will be capable producers for the commercial market. “It’s a tough game right now,” observes Mitchell. “For those breeders who haven’t sold a big horse it’s hard to

‘For those breeders who haven’t sold a big horse it’s hard to make it with the way the stud fees are’ make it with the way the stud fees are. “Everybody wants the same mares and everybody wants the same yearlings. For those horses people want, who knows what they’ll bring at sales. “But just an average mare like we used to buy for $15,000, $20,000 or $30,000, they’re almost useless now when we go back to the sales [with their yearlings] unless something ungodly happens in their pedigrees.” Happily for Mitchell, he and his family have been in the enviable position of approaching the November sales with substantial yearling returns twice in four years, thanks to foals produced by their 2016 Broodmare of the Year Leslie’s Lady, dam of multiple champion Beholder and Grade 1 winner and

outstanding sire Into Mischief. In 2016, Clarkland sold the Scat Daddy colt out of Leslie’s Lady who topped the Keeneland September Sale at $3m when acquired by MV Magnier. Named Mendelssohn, the colt went on to win the

Fred Mitchell: not experienced a year like this one before

Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf and the UAE Derby, and this summer he completed his first season at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud. Following Mendelssohn’s sale that September, the Clarkland team purchased three mares at the 2016 Keeneland November Sale for a total of $800,000. One of those mares was Grade 3 winner Hot Stones, who was acquired for $250,000. This year, Hot Stones’s yearling colt by Into Mischief was sold by Clarkland for $700,000 to Hamdan Al Maktoum’s Shadwell operation at the Keeneland September Sale. That price made him the farm’s second highest-priced yearling behind the American Pharoah filly who became the second Keeneland September Sale-topping offspring of Leslie’s Lady.

A $100,000 bargain buy at the 2006 Keeneland November Sale, Leslie’s Lady has now produced three seven-figure yearlings, including her Curlin filly Leslie’s Harmony, sold for $1.1m to Bridlewood Farm in 2014.

OWEVER, when Mandy Pope signed the ticket on the American Pharoah filly, who was delivered when Leslie’s Lady was 22, the broodmare’s incredible career with sales yearlings might have come to a close. Mitchell said he and his family intend to keep the mare’s weanling filly by Not This Time as well as the foal she is currently carrying in utero by Kantharos, which has also been determined to be a filly.

The Mitchells have named the Not This Time filly Marr Time, a nod to Nancy Mitchell’s late father John Wesley Marr, who ran Clarkland for years with an inimitable style. “He never changed his clocks – he stayed on Central Standard Time all the time,” relates Fred Mitchell. “So when he was alive and we were working for him, at this time of the year we were two hours behind everybody else!” Most of Kentucky, including the Lexington area, is in the Eastern time zone and switches an hour ahead to daylight saving time from around March to November. Mitchell continues: “When we were going to the breeding sheds, people would ask, ‘Are you breeding on Marr time or our time?’ When he passed away I don’t know how many calls the funeral director got wanting to know if the funeral was going to be on Marr time or standard time. “So we thought we’d put Marr Time as the filly’s name, so the kids and grandkids could remember their grandfather and great-grandfather.” As of mid-October, Pope had not yet named the American Pharoah filly, who was sent to Florida for early training. While the Mitchell family still has so much to anticipate with Leslie’s Lady and the foals they plan to keep for racing and breeding, Fred Mitchell pointed to another example of why the breeding business is so challenging. Leslie’s Lady’s colt by Medaglia D’Oro who was foaled in 2017 unfortunately died after suffering complications following an otherwise routine surgery to remove a bone chip from an ankle. That colt, who was immature and lacking perfect conformation, was not sold when listed as a $60,000 RNA (reserve not attained) at the 2018 Keeneland September Sale. “It’s not all good luck in the horse business,” notes Mitchell.
