ELCOME to ANZ Bloodstock News and Racing Post Bloodstock’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearlings supplement for 2018. Racing Post’s bloodstock sales supplements have been a staple for some time in the northern hemisphere. This marks the first in a number of co-branded Australian supplements that will be published during 2018. In 2017, both businesses produced Gold Coast publications as stand-alone efforts but this year, following the acquisition of ANZ Bloodstock News by the Racing Post, we are delighted to combine efforts. Inglis’ Easter Sale retains the leading position by median price achieved for any yearling sale in Australia, but Magic Millions’ Gold Coast Sale continues to go from strength to strength. Turnover has doubled in just five years and the sale counts among its graduates an increasingly influential bunch of recent superstars Winx (Street Cry) is the obvious one, with inaugural Everest (1200m) winner Redzel (Sntizel) a new flagbearer. The pair have won more than $23,000,000 in total career prize money and netted in excess of a staggering $13,000,000 in 2017 alone. That’s an interesting statistic when set against the mighty Highland Reel’s (Galileo) European career record of $13,241,762 (£7,513,355). But if recent history is strong, that is not to say the Magic Millions graduates list isn’t deep. It includes individuals now making their impact on the next generation. Magic Millions Gold Coast graduates Savabeel (Zabeel) and Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) captured the general sires list titles in New Zealand and Australia respectively in 2017. In Snitzel’s case, this was his first title. For Savabeel, he was bringing up three in a row. Both set records of some sort or other during the season. While the Gold Coast social scene is a huge amount of fun, those with an interest in global bloodstock continue to gather here in increasing numbers to suggest that it is very much serious business. Honestly. We hope you enjoy the read.
What is the Magic Millions Carnival all about? The Magic Millions
Gold Coast Yearling Sale is the jewel in the Magic Millions crown. It runs from January 10-16 and will see around 1,000 yearlings sold, coinciding with a major prize money raceday (with selling after the racing). Around the sale, there are a host of other events that make up the Magic Millions Carnival.
What ’s significant about the racing? The Gold Coast racecourse hosts a
$10,000,000 raceday on Saturday, January 13. Seven of nine races are worth at least $1,000,000 in prize money, with the two highlights being the $2,000,000 Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) and $2,000,000 Gold Coast Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m). Last year’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Houtzen (I Am Invincible) ran in the inaugural The Everest in October, won by another Magic Millions’ graduate Redzel.
What else is there to like? What’s not to like about summer heat and temperatures of 30-plus degrees. With its sunny subtropical climate, the Gold Coast is a popular tourist destination for a reason. It has become widely known for its surfing beaches, theme parks, nightlife, and rainforest hinterland. The city is central to the nation’s
entertainment industry with some calling it Australia’s Hollywood.
Why is Magic Millions important? The Magic Millions Gold Coast
Yearling Sale has enjoyed significant growth in recent years. Last year’s turnover of $135,000,000 is roughly double the turnover from 2013 and makes it the highest-grossing yearling sale in Australia. Graduates include the past three Australian Horses of the Year in Criterion (Sebring) and Winx (winner for the past two seasons).
How to follow the action ANZ Bloodstock News will be covering the action daily from on-site, alongside Racing Post Bloodstock’s digital daily coverage – you won’t miss a thing. To subscribe to ANZ Bloodstock News, go to anzbloodstocknews.com/subscribe. Anything else? Yes, this is the first year
Magic Millions will hand out $500,000 in additional bonuses to their Magic Millions Racing Women scheme. This will be paid out to the first four finishers in the 2YO Classic who are wholly owned or leased to 100 per cent female ownership. Global Glamour (Star Witness) is a Magic Millions graduate, and this year marks a step forward in promoting an area of racehorse ownership that Magic Millions believes can grow significantly.

RELISHING A NEW YEAR, NEW ROLES AND A NEW SET OF CHALLENGES Steve Moran meets the men responsible for the first yearling auction of 2018
N
EW challenges lie ahead in 2018 for Magic Millions executives Vin Cox and Barry Bowditch, but in the interim they will jointly oversee the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. Together they will manage the year’s first yearling auction before Cox takes up his new role as Managing Director of Godolphin in Australia, while Bowditch will assume the same role at Magic Millions – a position Cox has held since 2011. “I’ve said to Barry, ‘you lead and I’ll be there at your shoulder’,” Cox says of the hand-over process. Bowditch advances from the position of bloodstock manager after 12 years with the company. In truth, the bulk of the work before any horse auction is done well before the hammer comes down on the first lot. “We inspected 3,500 yearlings through late August and September with the task getting underway around the same time as the Hunter Valley stallion parades,” says Bowditch. “There’s a lot of time and effort and liaison with vendors in putting the catalogue together.” And therein lies Bowditch’s strength, according to his soon-to-be former boss. “Barry is world-class in putting a catalogue together, whether it’s yearlings or broodmares or any other stock,” Cox says. “He has an intuitive and hands-on understanding of the value of horses and where they are best placed for sale. He’ll do a great job at the helm.” Cox’s successor understands his changed role may not be as simple as moving from one office to another. For one, it’s not always easy to go from being one of the guys to being the boss, and second that he is inheriting an already successful business which Cox says has become ‘the leading sales company in the southern hemisphere’. Bowditch says: “I understand that perhaps my days of being the funny guy, the larrikin around the office are gone, but we

really have a great team at Magic Millions and I’d be pretty confident the staff would have my back. “The key challenge for me is probably to keep getting the horse part of the job right and maintaining the confidence of our vendors. I was honoured to be offered the job as I guess I’m still quite young where this industry sits, but after 12 years here and five years with Inglis, I feel I’m ready for it.” Bowditch believes the fundamentals of the business are sound, and Cox concurs, saying: “If I were to offer Barry one piece of advice, it would be ‘don’t fix it, it ain’t broken’. I think it’s a case of keep driving on with the very good team and very good relationships the business has been able to build. “People here are passionate about the brand and passionate about the sales and our $10,000,000 raceday. The fundamentals are good right now and our growth has been fantastic in recent years.” That growth is easily measured by comparing the January numbers from Cox’s first year in 2012 to those from 2017. The gross has almost doubled to $135,000,000 and the average more than doubled to $205,142 (at an 87.9 per cent clearance in 2017). How has that been achieved? “The first step is gaining the confidence of the vendors,” Cox says. “We’ve been able to instil confidence in them about what we were doing and, in turn, that leads to better quality horses being offered and that attracts better buyers. “We have to spread the net a bit wider and work a bit harder than those who can almost wholly rely on their home state or

country. We have a number of very commercial and successful Queensland breeders who more than hold their own but not in the same numbers as elsewhere. “Part of the success of the past few years is also linked to the traction we’ve gained internationally, especially from the USA and the Middle East.” Is that growth sustainable? “Prize money is the key and we’ve seen that jump significantly in the past two years,” Cox adds. “You can never disregard the general state of the economy, but strong prize money will carry you a fair way. The state of the currency is obviously also important and we’ve seen the Asian market, especially Hong Kong, strong again as we’ve seen the Australian dollar sit around that traditional mark of 76 cents [in USD].”
L
ONGER-TERM growth may well be sustained by mainland China according to Cox: “That’s a growth area and the potential is huge.” There are no immediate plans for radical change to the January sales concept with Queensland tourism minister Kate Jones and Magic Millions co-owner Katie Page announcing this year they had struck a deal to keep the $10,000,000 race day and horse sales extravaganza on the Gold Coast until at least 2022. However, the company is working on a new sales complex in Western Australia at Middle Swan which will include about 300 stables and a selling auditorium. “The February yearling sale will be the last one held at Belmont. We’d hope, by mid-year, to be up and running with a purpose

built facility for WA breeders at the new location,” Cox says. That facility will be part of the landscape Bowditch will guide. The 35-year-old originally hails from Wagga Wagga. His father Barry (senior) and mother Helen have been active industry participants, principally training, for most of their lives. The wider family includes prominent South Australian jockey Joe Bowditch – his first cousin. Bowditch has not known a working life other than that of the sales and bloodstock industry, and says: “I started at Inglis at 17 and I left five years to the day after I started. I was looking to move back to the Gold Coast, where the family had moved when I was 12. Going to Magic Millions was the obvious next step. “I might have done of a lot of the very basic work but I was also given great opportunities when I started, including yearling inspections and going to the races every Saturday at the behest of Reg Inglis, so I was able to meet a lot of influential people in the industry.” Along the way Cox has well learned the level of diplomacy required in putting together any catalogue. “You have to be diplomatic,” he says. “It’s the old line that you can insult a man’s wife but not his horse, although these days most vendors take a realistic view of where their horse sits. “Still, you have to make decisions. For this sale of those 3,500 horses we inspected, we had somewhere between 2,200 and 2,300 entries to be cut to 1,062 on offer. That’s about a 50 per cent knock-back rate.” There’s also the balancing act in not over-loading any catalogue with too many of one stallion’s stock and assessing the entries who won’t have the dazzling pedigree page. “The first is not that complicated,” Bowditch adds. “You’re hurting the vendors at the bottom end if you take too many from one stallion. As to the second, I love the good horse with no pedigree. “Physical attributes make racehorses, and we’ve built a reputation for selling very good racehorses irrespective of their background.” Cox and Bowditch are naturally looking forward to the first major event of 2018 and the remainder of the year. “I’m thrilled to be taking over from Vin and hope to see Magic Millions go from strength to strength, maintaining the integrity of our service and the quality of stock we sell,” Bowditch says. Cox will bring 30 years’ experience in the industry to his new role at Godolphin. He joined the then William Inglis & Son in 1988 before forming his own bloodstock advisory company, Vin Cox Bloodstock, in 2002 and through all guises has fostered the relationship between the Australian and American breeding industries. “I’ve enjoyed a fantastic time at Magic Millions,” he says. “It’ll be almost seven years by the time I finish and it’s been fun and rewarding – and I now look forward to leading Godolphin in Australia.”

‘A wonderful horsewoman and a great parader of horses as well as a good judge’
FROM AN IDYLLIC CHILDHOOD IN BRITAIN TO A DREAM JOB ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD Tim Rowe meets Rae-Louise Farmer of newcomer Fernrigg Farm
Exciting times: Rae-Louise Farmer cannot wait to see her first yearlings go through the sales ring
T
HE promise of sun, warm weather and being able to wear shorts will see accomplished horsewoman Rae-Louise Farmer offer her first draft at the 2018 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale under the Fernrigg Farm banner just six years after she came to Australia for the first time. The 2012 Magic Millions sale on the Gold Coast is where it all started for Farmer – an ambitious international equestrian who was brought up in the north of England – and a fitting sale for Fernrigg Farm to unveil its draft of 13 yearlings in 2018. It is a prospect that seemed unlikely when Farmer, then in her early 20s, made a snap decision to leave America, having already moved from England after a stint with Watership Down, to take in the Australian summer and autumn yearling sales. Recommended by Magic Millions managing director and former bloodstock agent Vin Cox, who had met Farmer when she was employed by Lane’s End, she arrived ready to work for Widden Stud with little idea the decision would have such a profound impact on her life. “I learned so much during my time at Watership Down, and it was Simon Marsh who advised me to further my experience by travelling to Lane’s End in Kentucky,” she says. “In my four years there I travelled to different farms and sales with Mike Cline,

who taught me all about yearling appraisal and conformation exams. While working for Lane’s End I met Vin Cox, who got me the position in Australia with Widden.” Farmer had been parading mares and foals in the snow at a Keeneland sale in the US when she saw photographs of the Magic Millions on the Gold Coast, and her sights turned to checking out what the Australian thoroughbred industry had to offer. “Admittedly Australia had not been on my radar at the time, but I saw some photographs online from the Magic Millions Yearling Sale and everyone was parading in shorts while I was wrapped up in a snow suit,” she says. “So I said to Vin I’d like to go to Australia. “The next week he rang and said there was a position available at a famous Australian stud, if I wanted it, and that I could start the following week. This will by my sixth Magic Millions.” Widden is known as the Valley of Champions but it is not just star horses who have emanated from the picturesque property, with a long line of prominent industry people spending their formative years at the Thompson family stud before going on to forge successful careers in the industry in their own right. Farmer is just the latest to branch out after working at Widden following in the footsteps of the likes of Mark Chittick, who now runs his family’s famous Waikato Stud in New Zealand where reigning champion stallion Savabeel (Zabeel) resides. Henry Plumptre, who ran Godolphin’s Australian operations until mid-2017, is another to harness his bloodstock skills and knowledge in the Widden Valley. He has recently been appointed to oversee New Zealand’s most famous thoroughbred property, Cambridge Stud. Farmer, though, intended to stay in Australia for just six months, but her rapport with Antony and Katie Thompson and their family led to her remaining in the country, and she says: “I have many fond memories of my time at Widden, from preparing the likes of Star Turn and Stratum Star for the sales, to giving riding lessons to Amy and Sam [Thompson] in the evenings.” Six years on, Farmer calls the Hunter Valley her home, establishing Denman-based Fernrigg Farm, 70 acres that backs on to the Hunter River, with the assistance of her partner, Coolmore Australia head veterinarian Dr Padraig Kelly. Widden Stud proprietor Thompson has no doubt Farmer has what it takes to make Fernrigg Farm a

success and become the latest graduate to come through the Valley of Champions. “She’s a wonderful horsewoman and a great parader of horses as well as being a good judge,” Thompson says. “I liked what I saw [at the 2012 Magic Millions sale], so we offered her a permanent position and sponsored her to remain in Australia. From there she progressed to be a great member of the team and become yearling manager. She brought a lot of great ideas and I was really glad to have her at Widden.” Fernrigg Farm will present a strong inaugural draft at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, with the progeny of Star Witness (Starcraft), Sebring (More Than Ready), I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), Exceed And Excel (Danehill) and Rubick (Encosta De Lago) represented. But three Fernrigg Farm-consigned yearlings by freshman sire Dissident, a son of Widden Stud resident stallion Sebring, hold special significance for Farmer. When she came to work for Widden Stud, Farmer led a Sebring colt through the ring who was bought for $210,000 by trainer Peter Moody. The colt, who was subsequently named Dissident, went on to win six Group Ones, $2,021,200 in prize money and be crowned the 2015 Australian Horse of the Year before retiring to stud in the Hunter Valley at Newgate Farm. “When this year’s weanling sales came around I was desperate to buy a Dissident. He was part of my first sale in Australia and
you couldn’t really pick a bad one among them,” Farmer says. “I’ve been extremely impressed with them during the prep – they’re very athletic with a great attitude, making them easy horses to prepare.” The catalyst for Farmer to make the jump to running her own business was the success in recent years pinhooking weanlings, which included buying a Written Tycoon (Iglesia) colt at the 2016 Magic Millions Gold Coast National Weanling Sale in partnership with Redwall Bloodstock for $140,000. The colt was purchased by James Harron Bloodstock at the 2017 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for $650,000. Farmer admits setting up Fernrigg Farm, which opened on May 1, 2017, has been a steep learning curve, but a challenge she has relished. She says: “It’s been an extremely busy few months in preparation for our first sale, but it will be so exciting to see yearlings sell under the Fernrigg Farm banner. “Gai Waterhouse came to the farm and inspected our draft. She’s a hero of mine, so for her to come out and be so positive about the horses was very encouraging. “I never expected people like Gai and Peter Moody to put us on their list when they came to the Hunter Valley to do their pre-sale inspections at the larger studs, so it means a lot to us that they have.” Farmer’s formative years were spent growing up living with her grandparents near
Where it all began: Grand National winner Hallo Dandy
Newcastle in north-east England where they bred showjumpers. Those years played a pivotal role in developing the skills for handling thoroughbreds, and Farmer says: “I grew up with my grandparents and we had a lot of show jumpers I broke in and schooled up through the grades. “I competed internationally for my country as a junior in show jumping, so horses have always been an important part of my life from an early age.” One of Farmer’s first introductions to thoroughbred racing and breeding was going to visit Hallo Dandy (Menelek), who had won the 1984 Grand National (Gr 3, 4m4f) at Aintree. “When I was young we went to see Hallo Dandy parading at an open day. My granddad used to ride him in trackwork,” Farmer recalls. “I remember the horse was playing up for his handler, who was struggling to hold on to him, but when my grandad called him he recognised his voice, pricked his ears, came over to us and stood perfectly still.” As for Fernrigg Farm, the name is a tribute to her grandparents who have been so influential on her life. “If it wasn’t for my grandparents I wouldn’t know one end of a horse from another,” she says. “Fernrigg was the name of their house and the prefix we used for the showjumpers. I lost my grandparents a few years ago, so the name is something I want to carry on. I think they’d like that.”

APITALIST (Written Tycoon), Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice), Pierro (Lonhro), Sebring (More Than Ready), Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), Written Tycoon (Iglesia), Redzel (Snitzel) and Atlantic Jewel (Fastnet Rock). All of them elite racehorses who are being referred to as breed-shapers and life-changers, the catchphrase used to promote the 2018 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. And then there is, of course, the greatest of them all, the life-changing champion Winx (Street Cry) who has gone on to become a three-time Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) heroine and winner of her past 22 starts. A $230,000 graduate of the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the Coolmore Stud draft, she sits at top of the sale’s company’s life-changers promotional material and certainly the stud’s own tagline, Home of Champions. While Winx is Coolmore’s raised-andgrazed champion, she joins a long list of successful horses to have spent their early years at the Hunter Valley arm of the worldwide operation. Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Vancouver (Medaglia d’Oro) (yearling price: $185,000), now a stallion at the farm where he was raised, dual Group Two winner Miss Rose De Lago (Encosta De Lago) ($210,000), consistent stakes winner Religify (Choisir) ($135,000) and Hong Kong Group Three winner Supreme Profit (Encosta De Lago) ($520,000) are also recent Magic Millions graduates sold by Coolmore Stud. “In terms of management of stock on the farm, the objective is to try and breed and develop top-class racehorses,” Coolmore Australia stud manager Jim Carey says. “It’s testament to the farm and the team behind it that Coolmore Australia has enjoyed such staggering success in this regard, particularly in recent years,” he adds. “Graduates of the farm have won 129 stakes races, including 27 Group Ones, since the start of 2015 alone. Group One winners off the farm in that period include Winx and Vancouver, both of whom are champion graduates of our drafts at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. “The reality is that our Magic Millions yearlings are managed no differently to any of the other yearlings who go through our programme, and the aim is the same – to try and produce an elite runner.” Fellow recent stakes-winning Magic Millions graduates Cool Chap (High Chaparral) ($150,000) and the Darren Weir-trained Jennifer Lynn (High Chaparral) ($120,000) were also raised and consigned by Coolmore Australia. “Magic Millions is synonymous with sharp, early-running sorts, but the sale has a strong record of producing a variety of top-class racehorses,” Carey says. “Yes, Vancouver was an unbeaten champion two-year-old to go through our draft, but Winx was better than ever at six,
BREED-SHAPERS AND LIFE-CHANGERS Tim Rowe on standout consigner Coolmore, who sold wonderhorse Winx at Magic Millions
while other graduates of our draft have also excelled as late maturers. “Miss Rose de Lago won her fifth stakes race as a six-year-old to take her earnings past $900,000, while Supreme Profit and Religify were six when winning their first stakes races.” Fastnet Rock, a son of Danehill (Danzig), has been Coolmore Australia’s flagship stallion for a number of years having joined its roster in 2005 after winning six races including the Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at Flemington and the Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) at Caulfield as a three-year-old old. In 2017, Fastnet Rock sired 15 individual stakes winners in the southern hemisphere, including three at Group One level: Catchy, who won the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), Shoals winner of the Myer Classic (registered as Empire Rose Stakes) (Gr 1, 1600m) and Coolmore Stud Stakes (registered as Ascot Vale Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Merchant Navy. Fastnet Rock has 31 yearlings catalogued at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, including nine from the Coolmore Stud draft. Choisir (Danehill Dancer), another Coolmore resident stallion trained by Perry during his Group One-winning racing career, has 20 yearlings on offer. But equally it is the emergence of young Coolmore Stud stallions – Golden Slipper
Stakes winner Pierro and dual hemisphere champion So You Think – who are set to continue Coolmore’s Home of Champions. Pierro sired his maiden Group One winner when Pinot proved to be the dominant three-year-old filly with a decisive victory in the VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) at Flemington, while Levindi won the Carbine Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) and Kentucky Breeze won the Emirates Airlines Handicap (registered as VRC Springtime Stakes) (Listed, 1400m), also victorious at the same carnival. Two-year-old Satin Slipper, a daughter of Pierro, also won the Gimcrack Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Randwick, the first juvenile race of the season in New South Wales on 30 September. “Fastnet Rock is, and always has been, an exceptional stallion, while Choisir is one of the best proven sires in the Southern Hemisphere” says Carey. “The likes of So You Think and Pierro were identified during their race careers as colts with the credentials to establish themselves as stallions of the highest class – and things are working out well for both of them with their early crops. Freshman stallion Rubick, a son of now pensioned resident sire Encosta De Lago (Fairy King), covered 214 mares in his first season at stud in 2014, with 39 yearlings from his first crop catalogued at the Magic Millions.
“Rubick is a very exciting young sire and there seems to be genuine excitement about his first yearlings going to market,” Carey says. “There’s a lot to like about him and the feeling is his offspring will be pursued with plenty of vigour on the Gold Coast.” Carey says Coolmore’s history of producing raised-and-grazed racetrack stars seems assured as the team, headed by Tom Magnier (pictured), enter the 2018 sales series: “He has a volume of experience of the bloodstock industry around the world that it would ordinarily take many people many lifetimes to accumulate. He has an infectious passion for the Australian racing and breeding industry and it rubs off on everyone here “The Australian bloodstock industry is an intense, relentless environment. The racing is not seasonal as in other parts of the world, it’s 12 months of the year and one has to be focused on it at all times. “The breeding season takes up one half of the year and the sales the other – it’s not for the faint-hearted. But it’s a stimulating environment to work in and when you have an ambitious, hungry team like we have the opportunities are endless.”

‘The sale has evolved. Its range has broadened as the catalogue has grown in size and scope’
THE FAST AND FURIOUS SALE THAT’S A PROVEN HAVEN FOR STAYERS Matt Stewart reflects on the early days and what Magic Millions has become today
T
HERE are two stats that would make for trivia night questions and contradict the perception of the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale as an auction for the fast
and furious. Here’s an eyebrow-raiser. Of the 20 highest-earning graduates of the Gold Coast sale, held every January since 1986, 13 were not fast-maturing sprinters, but stayers. Two of them – Subzero (Kala Dancer) and Shocking (Street Cry) – won the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m). Shocking was the last Australian-bred winner of our great staying race. By Street Cry (Machiavellian) and a cheap $45,000 at the 2007 sale, he won the Cup in 2009. Others in the top-earner list, like Mahogany (Last Tycoon), Shoot Out (High Chaparral), Nothin’ Leica Dane (Danehill), Special Harmony (Spinning World), Sunday Joy (Sunday Silence) and Tarzino (Tavistock), were Classic horses – Derby and Oaks winners. From the moment of conception, the Magic Millions sale had been about rapid turnaround and a race against time to chase down a very big carrot. “Back then it wasn’t really even about fast horses with pedigree, just mature types who could go early,’’ says bloodstock agent James Bester, adding the sale has evolved “in perception and reality”. The carrot was the (then) $1,000,000 for graduate two-year-olds, run exactly a year to the day from when they were sold as yearlings at an auction house adjoining
@anz_news
In the sales ring: “Now, you go to the Gold Coast to simply buy a nice horse, a good horse” the racetrack. The first was won by Snippets (Lunchtime) in 1987. The paradox was that Magic Millions yearlings, even the stocky, precocious ones, were also relatively immature because of the timing of the sale. Buyers had to peer into a crystal ball, then test them early if they were going to chase that carrot. “That’s the irony of those Magic Millions yearlings early on,” says Cranbourne trainer Mick Kent. “The Inglis horses at Easter had three months of maturity on them, which is huge for a yearling. The Magic Millions yearlings were quite immature at the point of sale, even the precocious ones, which probably made it quite tricky for buyers.” Back then the Magic Millions seemed to capture Australia’s voracious appetite for a near instant return on investment. Staying horses were on the way out. Syndicates demanded bang for buck. The image of the venue suited perfectly – the shimmering Gold Coast, where everything seemed fast and flashy. The location remains the constant in the story of the Magic Millions in January, but the annual yearling sale has evolved. Its
range has broadened as the catalogue has grown in size and scope. The win of Magic Millions graduate Ace High (High Chaparral) in this year’s Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) at Flemington continued an almost hidden trend of horses from the Gold Coast sale – they’re not all quick. Many can stick on, which is a valuable advertisement for the sale because, as the top 20 list proves, the real money in Australia, outside the $10,000,000 Magic Millions raceday, is in distance races. Bester, who has bought horses for Darley and Coolmore and as an independent agent, says breeders are no longer preoccupied with precocity at the Gold Coast. “And nor are the buyers,’’ he adds. “There has been a shift in perception and reality – there has been a shift in the class of horse entered for the sale. Early days it was very much a sale for the physical type, irrespective of pedigree consideration. “Breeders held back their pedigree yearlings for Easter. Back then, that was the big-ticket sale for big-ticket yearlings. “Now, you go to the Gold Coast to simply buy a nice horse, a good horse. You

also go there to sell a good horse, a $1,000,000 horse potentially. “If they’re up and about for the big raceday the next January, so be it. But it’s no longer the preoccupation. And besides, with the now broad racecard, with races for three-year-olds and middle-distance horses, you can come back the next year, or the one after.’’ In recent times the program has added two 1400 metre races, the $2,000,0000 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m) and $1,000,000 Magic Millions Cup (RL, 1400m), and the Magic Millions Trophy (2200m), also worth $1,000,000. Bester says he bought Global Glamour (Star Witness) for $65,000 at the 2015 Magic Millions sale with an eye to the $2,000,000 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) the next year. “But ultimately she wasn’t ready and she returned the following year [and finished second in the Guineas]. And the intention is to be back in 2018,’’ he says. Bester says the Gold Coast evolution is not a complete shift: “You can probably buy a staying type up there maybe a little bit cheaper than, say, at Karaka in New Zealand, because many buyers are still keen on something a bit precocious.’’ Ace High’s trainer David Payne isn’t as emphatic as Bester that the Gold Coast has morphed dramatically from its origins. He bought Ace High for $120,000 in 2016, which he says was at least $100,000 less than he expected “perhaps because he had a more stout pedigree than most of the buyers were looking for”. “I’ve been buying up there for about 14 years and I’d say it’s mostly about speed,” he adds. “But there’s a little percentage, maybe a growing percentage, that looks for a staying horse out of the catalogue.’’ Like Bester, Payne says the Gold Coast has become a ‘good-horse’ sale. “There are no rules. You go to buy nice horses and there are plenty of them up there. Some will surprise you,’’ he says. Payne says he got lucky picking up Ace High, a son of High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells), so cheaply: “I’m not sure what happened. He got to $120,000 quite quickly and then the bidding got stuck. I really thought he could have sold for up to $300,000. “He was a lovely type. I tend to gravitate to the ones who might stay on a bit and that’s the way I’ve been buying, even back to when I was training in South Africa. “I’ve bought some nice speed horses from the Gold Coast, like Bold Circle, but I’ve also been able to pick up some more staying types, including Ace High.’’ For Ballarat trainer Matt Cumani, there was some irony in Payne’s cheap purchase of Ace High. He eyed the 2016 sale as a chance to buy precious and staying types but bought only speed. Cumani, an Englishman and relative newcomer to the Australian training ranks, bought four yearlings at the Coast in 2016 and six last year. Most had fast pedigrees. “I was keen on Ace High but in the end I thought he’d be too expensive. And I knew David Payne was prepared to go higher. But it goes to show you should go there with an open mind, not just to buy

precocious types which is probably what I did in the end.” Vin Cox, the Magic Millions managing director since 2011, who leaves soon to take up a senior role with Godolphin, said the credibility factor of the sale has led to a greater range of graduates. “No doubt the focus in the early years was on sharp two-year-olds who might get a crack at the [then] $1,000,0000 race,” he says. “But the sale has continued to gain credibility in the market place and it’s become bigger for it. The race meeting has expanded, with races for older horses over more distance, and that has been a reflection of the type of horse being sold. “We now really go after a broad section of horse – one who can win as a two-yearold or a Derby or Melbourne Cup horse.” The represented sires for this year’s yearling sale are not just a who’s who but also a cross-section. There are armies of the progeny of speed sires like Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice), Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) and Written Tycoon (Iglesia), who were all former Magic Millions yearlings. But they share the sale with horses like Tavistock (Montjeu), Dundeel (High Chaparral), Reliable Man (Dalakhani), So You Think (High Chaparral) and Savabeel (Zabeel), who provide a balance for a catalogue that was created in the 1980s for a certain type of horse and buyer but is now an open book.

Pack the bags the night before, check the weather forecast, get the iPad charged and away we go to get down there early to start inspections. There are so many quality horses to look at.
We have our yearlings prepared by our expert team at Newgate and we also inspect most of the horses at the other studs before the sale. By the time we get to the Gold Coast we’re well prepared.
If I was attending a sale in Europe I’d go and see the horses beforehand. You can’t do that, so we have to study the catalogue as much as we can. I like to get out there at least five days before the start of the sale to start inspections.
We try to get all our yearlings to the Gold Coast in one piece and healthy – and ourselves the same.
I go through the catalogue during November and identify pedigrees that are of interest to myself and my clients. In early December, I spend four days in the Hunter Valley matching the types to the pedigrees.
It could be Wandjina. He’s a very good-looking Group One-winning son of Snitzel and, from all reports, his offspring are very good types. Having said that, it’s a very strong and competitive year for first-season sires.
We have three first-season sires represented at Magic Millions – Deep Field, Dissident and Wandjina. I think all three stallions have the credentials and quality of progeny who can make a big impact.
Deep Field is an exciting young horse. His brother Shooting To Win will have the same genes so I’m looking forward to seeing their offspring.
There are quite a few to choose from and we would lean to Brazen Beau, who was a super racehorse by I Am Invincible and is sure to get precocious two-year-olds.
With 23 first-season sires represented at the Magic Millions I think any of seven could be the one the market goes for. Until I’ve seen the types during inspections that each has left, it’s too early to make a call.
Do you place more emphasis on pedigree or a horse’s physical make-up?
I’ll put all my effort into the individual who is presented in front of me first and foremost, take into account their physical appearance and address the family secondly.
We really like to deal in athletic horses. By far and away we value conformation and the environment in which they are raised as important indicators to success on the track.
Australian racing is different – you need early speed – so I’ve found over the years you need a strong hind quarter, but equally you want a bit of scope if they’re going to go on and make three-year-olds.
I don’t place any particular emphasis on a horse’s pedigree. First and foremost they have to be an athletic type.
It’s no good how amazing the horse’s ‘page’ is if it’s not a physical type, so that’s far more important for me.
Do you expect fierce competition and the potential for records to be broken?
Records tumbled globally in all racing jurisdictions in 2017, and the Australian market is as buoyant as any. I expect the buying bench will be very strong again with investment from all parts of the globe.
I think the market will be as solid as it’s been over the last couple years and don’t see anything changing in the appetite for top-quality bloodstock.
It’s the strongest place I go in terms of the whole racing package. There’s huge prize money and the industry is booming. The market has become so unbelievably competitive, so I don’t see any reason why not.
If the world yearling market is a good guide and with Australia’s fabulous prize money, I think the market will be strong. Whether we’ll see records broken is another matter.
The market will be strong once again yes, but if records tumble that’ll be down to what certain people think a particular horse is worth!
Have you had any particularly satisfying results at the sale in recent editions?
Sebring colt Seaburge. He had a very good career at two and three and was an inch off winning the Group One, stallion-making Caulfield Guineas over 1600m.
We’ve been fortunate to sell a host of really good quality horses over the last couple of years. Every time one of our Magic Millions graduates wins a stakes race, it gives me a great thrill.
We had a lovely filly called Madeenaty. She was third in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic and she won a Listed race. She’s very fast and a beautiful-looking filly – she’ll make a brilliant broodmare for the stud.
Houtzen and Flying Jess winning the Magic Millions two- and three-year-old races last year being by our I Am Invincible and Hinchinbrook.
Last year we set out to buy some early-running types. Through the deeds of Breeders Plate winner Performer, it appears we have.
What is your routine as you prepare for Magic Millions week? Who do you think will be the surprise package among the first-season sires?

Adelaide GALILEO - ELLETELLE BY ELNADIM Standing at: Coolmore Stud, NSW 2017 fee: $11,000 (inc GST)
Overview The former Aidan O’Brien-trained Adelaide (Galileo) was retired to stud in 2015 with a career record of four wins and four placed finishes from nine starts, winning twice at the highest level for earnings of $2,707,126. He started his career as a two-year-old in October 2013, winning at the first attempt, over a mile at Leopardstown, and he returned as a three-year-old to finish second in the Prix Hocquart (Gr 2, 2200m) at Longchamp. He put that first career defeat behind him with victory in the Gallinule Stakes (Gr 3, 1m2f) at the Curragh on his next start before finishing a close second behind Eagle Top (Pivotal) in the King Edward VII Stakes (Gr 2, 1m4f) at Royal Ascot in June 2014. He was shipped to America to contest the Belmont Derby (Gr 1, 1m2f), where he went down by a neck in second, but he gained his Grade 1 breakthrough with a decisive win in the Secretariat Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2f) at Arlington Park. After running third in the Prix Niel (Gr 2, 2400m) at Longchamp the following month, he secured a brilliant victory in the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) at Moonee Valley under Ryan Moore in October 2014, overcoming a tough trip to land the prestigious weight for age feature. Adelaide is one of two foals out of the Group Two-winning mare Elletelle (Elnadim), herself a half-sister to the dual Listed winner Freedom (Second Empire), making him a brother to the stakes-placed Puissant. His second dam Flamanda (Niniski) has produced six winners from 11 foals to race, and her progeny include the stakesplaced dam of Herbert Power Stakes (Gr 2, 2400m) (winner) Lord Fandango (Lord Of England). ◊ Four lots catalogued Age Runs 1st 2nd 3rd

The former Kelly Schweida-trained Better Than Ready (More Than Ready) commenced stallion duties at Lyndhurst Stud in Queensland in 2015 with a race record of eight wins and three placed efforts from 16 starts, amassing prize money of $484,875. The eight-year-old made a winning debut as a juvenile at Eagle Farm in April 2012 and rounded out his campaign with a fourth in the Hampden Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Doomben. A winner first up as a three-year-old, he went on to land the Brian Crowley Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Randwick in the spring before a successful autumn campaign in Brisbane saw him register victories in the Falvelon Handicap (Listed, 1200m) and Mick Dittman Plate (Listed, 1000m) and finish third in the BTC Cup (Gr 1, 1200m). He won twice in a light four-year-old campaign, taking out the Keith Noud Handicap (Listed, 1200m) in November 2013 before finishing fourth on his final career start in the Rubiton Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) at Caulfield. Better Than Ready is one of five named foals out of the winning mare Sally’s World (Agnes World), who is herself a half-sister to dual Group Three winner Publishing (Testa Rossa) and Listed winner Miss
Mooney Mooney (Redoute’s Choice). He is a brother to a winner and a half-brother to a further two winners, while his second dam Sally Magic (Keltrice) was second in the 1999 Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) and is a half-sister to the Group Three-placed dam of 2016 Linlithgow Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner Illustrious Lad (I Am Invincible). Brazen Beau I AM INVINCIBLE - SANSADEE BY SNAADEE Standing at: Northwood Park, VIC 2017 Fee: $44,000 (inc GST)
Overview A dual Group One winner and placed second on his other two starts at that level, the Chris Waller-trained Brazen Beau is from the first crop of champion first-season sire I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit). A winner on his debut over 1100m at Canterbury in February 2014, Brazen Beau won the BRC Champagne Classic (Gr 2, 1200m) on his third start in May 2014. He then finished second in his final two starts as a juvenile, beaten a neck by Time For War (Snitzel) in the BRC Sires’ Produce (Gr 2, 1350m) and a head in the JJ Atkins Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) by Almalad (Al Maher). Resuming at three with a fifth in the Danehill Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m), Brazen Beau won the Coolmore Stud Stakes (registered as Ascot Vale Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) in November 2014 by a length and a quarter over Delectation (Shamardal), also defeating Earthquake (Exceed And Excel) (8th), Scissor Kick (Redoute’s Choice) (9th) and Rubick (Encosta De Lago) (11th). Brazen Beau came back in February 2015, running second to Lankan Rupee (Redoute’s Choice) in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m), with Deep Field (Northern Meteor) in third. He landed the Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) on his final start in March. On that occasion he scored by two and three-quarter lengths over Chautauqua (Encosta De Lago) and Terravista (Captain
Rio), who finished second and third respectively and also turned the tables on Lankan Rupee, who was back in sixth. In June 2015, Brazen Beau was sent to Britain, where he made two racecourse appearances. After being sent off the 7-2 joint-favourite he was beaten half a length into second by Undrafted (Purim) in the King’s Stand Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) at Royal Ascot. Brazen Beau brought the curtain down on his career in the July Cup (Gr 1, 6f) at Newmarket and the Diamond Jubilee Stakes (Gr 1, 6f), finishing sixth behind Muhaarar (Oasis Dream). A $70,000 Inglis Sydney Classic Yearling Sale graduate, Brazen Beau is one of two winners out of the Group Three-placed Sansadee (Snaadee). His second dam Sansapa (Bletchingly), produced seven winners and is a half-sister to the Listed scorer Majestic Answer (Majestic Light), being out of the unraced Nearctic Answer (Nearctic). Trained in France by Freddie Head, Charm Spirit won six of his nine career starts. A €140,000 purchase by his trainer at the 2012 Arqana October Yearling Sale, the son of Invincible Spirit (Green Desert) finished second on debut over 1600m at Deauville in August 2013. He would win on his next start, the following month at Longchamp, when dropped to 1400m. Charm Spirit had his third outing in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (Gr 1, 1400m) in October 2013, in which he finished third behind Karakontie (Bernstein). Resuming at three, Charm Spirit won the Prix Djebel (Gr 3, 1400m) at Maisons-Laffitte before finishing fifth in a strong renewal of the 2000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) at Newmarket, featuring the likes of Night Of Thunder (Dubawi), Kingman (Invincible Spirit) and Australia (Galileo). After a further Group Three victory, Charm Spirit had his final three starts in Group One company and was victorious in all. He won the Prix Jean Prat (Gr 1, 1600m) at Chantilly in July 2014 before defeating Toronado (High Chaparral) in September’s Prix du Moulin de Longchamp (Gr 1, 1600m) and ending his career on a high when landing the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Gr 1,
1m) at Ascot, defeating 2000 Guineas winner Night Of Thunder (Dubawi). Charm Spirit is the only winner out of the Montjeu (Sadler’s Wells) mare L’Enjoleuse whose wins came over 2000m and 2100m. His second dam Machaera (Machiavellian) was unraced and is a half-sister to the dam of German Champion Ransom O’War (Red Ransom). Dissident SEBRING - DIANA’S SECRET BY ANABAA
Three-time winner: El Roca (right) was also twice placed in Group One company
Standing at: Newgate Farm, NSW 2017 Fee: $33,000 (inc GST)
Overview Dissident (Sebring) retired from racing a five-time Group One winner. Trained by Peter Moody, who purchased him as a yearling for $210,000 at the 2012 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of his breeder Widden Stud, Dissident won on his debut in January 2013, capturing the Blue Diamond Preview (C&G) (Listed, 1000m), beating Kuroshio (Exceed And Excel) and Thermal Current (Exceed And Excel). He finished second in the Blue Diamond Prelude (C&G) (Gr 3, 1100m) behind Kuroshio before running seventh in the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) behind Miracles Of Life (Not A Single Doubt) on his final start at two. Returning in the spring, Dissident finished second to Eurozone (Northern Meteor), in the Rosebud Handicap (Listed, 1200m). Two more seconds followed, in the Run To The Rose (Gr 3, 1200m) and Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), beaten in the latter by Zoustar (Northern Meteor). After two unplaced efforts at Group One level and a second in the Eskimo Prince Stakes (Listed, 1200m), Dissident returned to winning ways in the Hobartville Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) in March 2014 before landing the first of his five Group One victories when landing the Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). He would have two further starts at three. In the spring of 2014, Dissident resumed with a Group One double, taking the Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m). A second in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) behind Trust In A Gust (Keep The Faith) followed, before finishing sixth in the Caulfield Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m). Dissident had four starts in his final preparation, resuming with a third in the Australia Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) before adding the CF Orr Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) to his tally. He bowed out with victory over fellow Group One winners Wandjina (Snitzel) and Chautauqua (Encosta De Lago) in the All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick on 19 April 2015. Bred on a 5x3 cross of Danzig (Northern Dancer), Dissident is out of the Listed-placed Anabaa (Danzig) mare Diana’s Secret. His second dam Palace Scandal (Western Symphony) won over 1400m and produced five other winners including the Group Two-placed Heir Affair (Salieri). His third dam Palace Gossip (In The Purple) produced four winners, including the Listed scorer Mountebank (Habituate). ◊ 43 lots catalogued Age Runs 1st 2nd 3rd

El Roca FASTNET ROCK - RUBIMILL BY RUBITON Standing at: Westbury Stud, NZ 2017 fee: NZ$7,5000 (inc GST)
Overview The son of Fastnet Rock (Danehill) retired to stand at Westbury Stud in New Zealand in 2015, the winner of three of his 12 starts, two of those victories coming at stakes level. He was also placed at Group One level on two occasions. He bowed out having amassed $416,077 in career prize money. Trained throughout this career by Trent Busuttin, El Roca failed to make his NZ$12,000 reserve at the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale at Karaka in 2012, being passed in at NZ$11,000. After breaking his three-year-old maiden on his first start over 1000m at Taupo, El Roca secured his first stakes victory in the Westbury Stud Challenge Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Ruakaka on his next start, beating Group Three winner Gobi Ranger (Tale Of
The Cat) by a decisive two lengths. This performance earned the colt a trip to Australia, where he stayed for the duration of his career. On his first appearance in Australia he put in a fine performance to finish second in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude (Gr 3, 1400m), before following up that run with a fifth behind Long John (Street Cry) in the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) in October 2013. His second stakes win came in the Eskimo Prince Stakes (Listed, 1200m) in his first run back following an 18-week spell in February of his three-year-old season, beating subsequent Group One winner Dissident (Sebring) in the process. After running second in the Liverpool City Cup (Gr 3, 1300m), El Roca finished second in the Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), with Dissident able to reverse the Eskimo Prince Stakes form on that occasion. His second placing at elite level came in the George Ryder Stakes (Gr 1, 1500m), running third behind Irish raider Gordon Lord Byron (Byron). He was unplaced in the Doncaster Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) on his final start at three. He was kept in training at four but

After failing to deliver in three starts he was retired to stud. El Roca is out of the unraced Rubiton (Century) mare Rubmill, who is a sister to Millrich, dam of Group One winner Redzel (Snitzel), who won the inaugural running of The Everest (1200m) in October. Overview Trained by Bart and James Cummings, Hallowed Crown retired from racing with six wins and two at Group One level. Winning on his debut over 1150m at Randwick in March 2014, Hallowed Crown’s second start came the next month when he won the Kindergarten Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m), also at Randwick – his final start at two. Resuming in August at three, Hallowed Crown won the Run To The Rose (Gr 3, 1200m) before stepping up to Group One level where he did not disappoint, taking the Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), from Scissor Kick (Redoute’s Choice) and Shooting To Win (Northern Meteor, who finished second and third respectively. On his final runs Hallowed Crown finished third in the Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m)
before dropping in trip in the Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m), in which he was unplaced. Bred by Gooree Park Stud, Hallowed Crown is out of the Group Two winner and Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) runner-up Crowned Glory (Danehill), making him a half-brother to five winners, including Group Three scorer Needs Further (Encosta De Lago). Four-time Group One winner Olympic Glory (Choisir) joined the Arrowfield Stud stallion roster in 2015, shuttling from Haras de Bouquetot in Normandy. A £65,000 yearling purchase by Peter and Ross Doyle, Olympic Glory got off the mark at the first time of asking at two before finding only the subsequent 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) winner Dawn Approach (New Approach) too good in the Coventry Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) of 2012. A month later he made amends, taking the Superlative Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) at Newmarket before adding the Vintage Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) at Goodwood and rounding out his debut year with victory in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (Gr 1, 1,400m) at Longchamp. The winning streak continued on his first start at three, when he took the Greenham Stakes (Gr 3, 7f). His first Group One win over a mile would come later in the year, when he claimed the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Ascot. He confirmed himself an outstanding miler in the Lockinge Stakes of 2014 – his first start at four. He completed his excellent racing career with a final Group One win later that year, returning to Longchamp to take the Prix de la Foret (Gr 1, 1400m). He ended his career with eight wins from 15 career starts. “Olympic Glory is the most amazingly consistent horse,” trainer Richard Hannon said in 2015. “He has a wonderful temperament, and physically you could not wish to see a more imposing individual.” ◊ 14 lots catalogued

Rubick ENCOSTA DE LAGO - SLIDING CUBE BY ROCK OF GIBRALTAR Standing at: Coolmore Stud, NSW 2017 Fee: $17,600 (inc GST)
Overview The former Gerald Ryan-trained Rubick won three and was placed in one of his eight starts, amassing $379,500 in prize money before retiring to stallion duties in 2015. Rubick made an immediate impression on the racetrack as a juvenile, winning at Randwick in January 2014 before landing the Blue Diamond Prelude (C&G) (Gr 3, 1100m) at Caulfield a fortnight later. His first defeat came in the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) itself, although he ran a good race to finish fourth behind Earthquake (Exceed And Excel) at Caulfield. The son of Encosta De Lago (Fairy King) resumed at three with an authoritative victory in the Schillaci Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m) at Caulfield but could not repeat the feat in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). In a three-start autumn preparation, Rubick was third in the ATC Challenge Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m), seventh in The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) and fifth in the Royal Sovereign Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) before
he was retired from racing. Rubick was one of four foals out of Group Three winner Sliding Cube (Rock Of Gibraltar), who is a three-quarter sister to multiple Group One winner and three-time champion Australian sire Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) as well as Group One winner Platinum Scissors (Danehill). Sliding Cube is a half-sister to leading sire Manhattan Rain (Encosta De Lago) – the same family as Myer Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Shoals (Fastnet Rock). ◊ 32 lots catalogued Age Runs 1st 2nd 3rd

Shooting To Win NORTHERN METEOR - LISTEN HERE BY ELUSIVE QUALITY Standing at: Kelvinside, NSW 2017 Fee: $33,000 (inc GST)
Overview A son of champion first-season sire Northern Meteor (Encosta De Lago), Shooting To Win won both starts at two, scoring over 1200m on his debut in May 2014 before following up over 1250m at Canterbury the following month. Resuming at three, Shooting To Win was unplaced in the Up And Coming Stakes (Gr 3, 1300m), before running second to Panzer Division (Redoute’s Choice) in the Ming Dynasty Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m). His next run would come in Group One company when finishing third in September’s Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), which was won by Hallowed Crown (Street Sense). He returned to winning ways later that month in the Stan Fox Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) and then, having his first start in Melbourne, Shooting To Win won the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), where he defeated Rich Enuff (Written Tycoon) and Wandjina (Snitzel), who finished second and third respectively. Shooting To Win had four starts in his final preparation, with the best of those runs coming when third in the Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) to Hallowed Crown. Time For War SNITZEL - LADY ZABELIA BY ZABEEL Stood at: Kitchwin Hills
Overview The late Time For War was retired to stud in 2015 with three wins and three placed efforts from 13 starts, amassing $470,950 in prize money before his untimely death from colic at the age of five at Kitchwin Hills in December 2016. The former Gerald Ryan-trained son of Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) made a winning debut over 1100m at Rosehill in the spring of his two-year-old career before he returned in the autumn to land the Pago Pago Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at the same track. He lost his unbeaten record when fourth behind Peggy Jean (Myboycharlie) in the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) but bounced back to win the BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1350m), beating Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible) into second. At his first start as a three-year-old, he ran fifth in the Roman Consul Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and, after placed efforts in the Brian Crowley Stakes (Listed, 1200m), Gold Coast Guineas (Gr 3, 1200m) at Glasshouse Quality (Listed, 1300m), he was retired from racing. Time For War was one of five named foals out of the winning Zabeel (Sir Tristram) mare Lady Zabelia, herself a half-sister to the dam
of dual Group Three winner Hiflyer (Tavistock), making him a half-brother to the Group Three place-getter Lord Cecil (Animal Kingdom). His second dam is the stakes winner Miss Power Bird (Mukaddamah), while this is also the same family as multiple Group Onewinning filly Mosheen (Fastnet Rock), 2003 Hong Kong Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Lucky Owners (Danehill) and Australian champion Might And Power (Zabeel), who won the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m), Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) and the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) during a stellar career. ◊ Five lots catalogued Age Runs 1st 2nd 3rd

Unquestionably one of the best milers in Britain in recent years, Toronado (High Chaparral) was the first stallion announced to shuttle to Swettenham Stud as part of the operation’s link-up with his owner Al Shaqab Racing. Trained by Richard Hannon throughout his career, first by senior and then junior, Toronado made a winning debut over 6½f at Newbury in June 2012 and followed up with victory in the Winkfield Stakes (Listed, 7f) at Ascot a month later. He rounded off his two-year-old career with a win in the Champagne Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) at Doncaster and confirmed himself a serious 2000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) prospect with victory in the Craven Stakes (Gr 3, 1m) on his debut at three.
What followed was a three-race battle with the now Darley stallion Dawn Approach (New Approach), beginning with the Newmarket Classic, in which Toronado finished fourth. He once again found Dawn Approach too good in the St James’s Palace Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) in June before gaining revenge in the Sussex Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Glorious Goodwood. Having achieved a world thoroughbred ranking mark of 125 in 2013, he returned from a break of almost ten months to justify strong favouritism in the Queen Anne Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) on the opening day of Royal Ascot in 2014, decisively defeating Verrazano (More Than Ready). “I think any horseman in the world would believe he’s a great horse,” jockey Richard Hughes said of the win. His career concluded with runner-up finishes in the Sussex Stakes, to Kingman (Invincible Spirit) and Prix du Moulin de Longchamp (Gr 1, 1600m), to Charm Spirit (Invincible Spirit), before an unsuccessful trip to Santa Anita for the Breeders’ Cup Mile (Gr 1, 1m). ◊ Five lots catalogued

Wandjina SNITZEL - LA BAMBA BY LAST TYCOON Standing at: Newgate Farm, NSW 2017 Fee: $27,500 (inc GST)
Overview When James Harron Bloodstock went to $1,000,000 to secure Wandjina at the 2013 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, for a time he became the most expensive yearling by Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) to sell at auction. Wandjina is out of the winning Last Tycoon (Try My Best) mare La Bamba and is a half-brother to seven winners, including the Hong Kong Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Inspiration (Flying Spur) as well as the Listed winners Lucky Unicorn (Redoute’s Choice) and Provence (Redoute’s Choice), herself the dam of the Hong Kong Group Two winner My Admiration (Encosta De Lago). Trained by Gai Waterhouse, Wandjina had four starts at two, winning once when he scored over 1000m at Warwick Farm in February 2014. Wandjina was unplaced in his first four starts at three before finishing third in the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) behind Shooting To Win (Northern Meteor) and Rich Enuff (Written Tycoon). After finishing tenth in the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m), Wandjina returned to winning ways when landing the CS Hayes
Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) first up from a spell in February 2015. His third start in Group One company then followed, winning the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). Wanjina would have one more start in Australia, finishing second to Dissident (Sebring) in the All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick. He had his final start in the 2015 Diamond Jubilee Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) at Royal Ascot and was sixth behind Undrafted (Purim), with fellow first-season sire Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible) in second. Wandjina’s well-balanced pedigree features three crosses of Northern Dancer (Neacrtic) and significantly a 3f (Party) x4 m (Snippets) double of the influential outcross stallion Lunchtime (Silly Season) plus line-breeding to the blue hen mare Best In Show (Traffic Judge). ◊ 27 lots catalogued Age Runs 1st 2nd 3rd

From Manfred to Winx... M
anfred, foaled in 1922, was one of the first champions ‘raised and grazed’ on the land now farmed by Coolmore at Jerrys Plains. Manfred won the Cox Plate, Caulfield Cup, AJC Derby, VRC Derby, Champagne Stakes and Caulfield Stakes amongst a host of top-class races during his illustrious career. The precedent set by Manfred has been followed many times over the years. In recent years, the likes of Vancouver, Catchy, Pride Of Dubai, Inference, Mighty Boss and Pinot have joined our honour roll of Group One-winning graduates and in 2017 another graduate, champion racemare Winx made history by winning her third consecutive Cox Plate at Moonee Valley. It’s something to consider when attending the yearling sales in 2018.
