US BREEDING-STOCK SALES On the crest of a wave
W
ELCOME to Racing Post Bloodstock’s inaugural US breeding-stock supplement. Our European supplements have been an industry fixture for well over a decade, with the flagship Bloodstock Review as a centre-piece. We now add our third US-focused supplement of the season (following on from Saratoga and the US September Yearlings). Packed with leading writers and informed opinion as well as statistics and an interview with the legendary Rick Porter, we hope you find this publication sets the scene for what promises to be the most intriguing US breeding-stock season for some time. We arrive here on the crest of a bloodstock wave. Tattersalls Book 1 grossed 100 million guineas for the first time in history following new aggregate records at Fasig-Tipton’s Saratoga Yearlings, Goffs UK’s Premier Yearlings and Goffs Orby sales. Keeneland September grossed $300m for the first time since 2008, and generated that gross on more than 1,000 fewer yearlings than back then. The same story was true for Arqana’s August Yearling Sale that may not have broken aggregate records but did set a new high for average price in the process. That trade creates a sense of anticipation and expectation and that sense of expectation is heightened both by that favourable economic environment and the range of star lots on offer. Every year has stars, but this time we appear to be especially fortunate. Stellar Wind, Songbird, Tepin and Lady Eli are some quartet to look forward to, and the supporting cast is deep too. Since 2007, Fasig-Tipton has enjoyed the honour of selling the most expensive lot across both sales four times to Keeneland’s six – very nearly honours even. It will be interesting to see who has attracted the most prized offering this year. As for the buyers, if the past decade or so has taught us anything, it is that the ‘players’ change, with new arrivals challenging established orders. In the past decade at Keeneland November there have been no fewer than eight different entities account for the top lot. Only John Ferguson (in 2007 and 2008) and Mandy Pope’s Whisper Hill Farm (2014 and 2016) have bought the top lot on more than one occasion since 2007. Since 2009 at Fasig-Tipton’s November Sale, we have the same story. Six different purchasers of a top lot in eight years. Which queen will take the tiara? Who will take her home? Just a couple of the many things that we have to look forward to in the first week or so of November in Kentucky. We hope you enjoy the read.

Stellar Wind
5 ch m Curlin-Evening Star (Malibu Moon) Keeneland, hip 153; consigned by Lane’s End, agent
Stellar Wind bestrode the Californian racing scene, winning six Grade 1s in her home state – including when she demoted regular rival, the brilliant Beholder, into second on two occasions. The Curlin mare did not manage to win the Breeders’ Cup Distaff in two attempts but lost no caste in defeat when a neck second to Stopchargingmaria in 2015 and fourth behind Beholder, Songbird and Forever Unbridled in last year’s vintage renewal at Santa Anita. Stellar Wind is out of a turf winner by Malibu Moon and hails from the immediate family of Grade 1 winners Great Hunter and Mor Spirit.
Miss Temple City
5 b/br m Temple City-Glittering Tax (Artax) Fasig-Tipton, hip 99; consigned by Select Sales, agent
Graham Motion sent Miss Temple City to Royal Ascot in three consecutive years, resulting in a fourth to Ervedya in the Coronation, fourth to Usherette in the Duke of Cambridge, and unplaced behind Ribchester in a red-hot Queen Anne Stakes this June. She also won three Grade 1s over a mile on turf at home, putting the colts in their place in the Maker’s Mile and Shadwell Turf Mile. Miss Temple City is a sister to Belmont Oaks fourth Pricedtoperfection by Temple City – a son of Dynaformer, a proven Classic source in Europe – out of a fast daughter of Artax who won on turf and dirt.
Lady Eli
5 b/br m Divine Park-Sacre Coeur (Saint Ballado)
Keeneland, hip 271; consigned by Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency
Not only a brilliant racemare but one who overcame adversity and returned to the track better than ever. Lady Eli won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf and the Belmont Oaks, after which she stepped on a nail and developed laminitis. She recovered from the affliction that has claimed the careers of other horses – or worse – to notch three more top-flight successes, in the Flower Bowl Stakes, Gamely Stakes and Diana Stakes. The mare is by Divine Park out of a turf winner by Saint Ballado who has also produced Bizzy Caroline, a dual Grade 3 winner on the Churchill Downs grass.

Cathryn Sophia
4 b f Street Boss-Sheave (Mineshaft) Keeneland, hip 30; consigned by Bedouin Bloodstock, agent
Kentucky Oaks winners always draw the attention of the most deep-pocketed breeders when offered as broodmare prospects, as Plum Pretty – bought for $4.2 million in 2012 – and Princess Of Sylmar – a $3.1m purchase in 2014 – have demonstrated in recent years. Cathryn Sophia was garlanded with lilies after winning at Churchill Downs by two and a quarter lengths last year, and won another two Grade 2 contests by more than 12 lengths combined. Cathryn Sophia, by Street Boss out of a daughter of Mineshaft and Grade 2 winner Belterra, is in foal to Pioneerof The Nile.
Songbird
4 b f Medaglia D’Oro-Ivanavinalot (West Acre) Fasig-Tipton, hip 120; consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency Brace yourself when Songbird goes through the ring, as her price should soar into the stratosphere. The daughter of Medaglia D’Oro – a grandson of Sadler’s Wells whose progeny are effective the world over – won no fewer than nine Grade 1 races, most by mammoth margins, and was beaten into second in two others, once by a neck, once by a nose. Her haul, admittedly all gained against only her own sex, included the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, and the phenomenal front-runner was caught by just a nose by Beholder in the Distaff at the meeting a year later. Songbird has a fine pedigree too, as a daughter of the Grade 2-winning West Acre mare Ivanavinalot, a half-sister to fellow stakes scorers Shananie’s Beat and Slick Lady.
LEADING LADIES Martin Stevens on fab four and two more track queens who are sure to make waves when they come up for auction next month Tepin
6 b m Bernstein-Life Happened (Stravinsky) Fasig-Tipton, hip 130; consigned by ELiTE, agent
Here’s a mare who confounds any European breeder who claims not to be interested in American bloodlines. Tepin proved herself the best turf filly in the US before seeing off foreign raiders to keep the Breeders’ Cup Mile at home in 2015. Lest anyone thought that was a fluke, or her chances had been enhanced by domestic advantage, she came to Royal Ascot the following summer and took the Queen Anne Stakes, beating Belardo in his own backyard. Tepin is by Bernstein, a dual Group 3 winner for Aidan O’Brien who has a European Classic winner to his credit in Karakontie, out of a Stravinsky mare who has also produced dual US Grade 2 winner Vyjack, so her pedigree holds true transatlantic appeal. She is also in foal to the upwardly mobile Curlin.

US BREEDING-STOCK SALES Scenes from last year’s breeding-stock sales at Fasig-Tipton (left) and Keeneland, and (inset) MV Magnier

HEN the behemoths of breeding gather to do bidding battle for the choicest broodmare prospects and most promising weanlings, there is no more electric competition among men and women on the planet. Raising their hands or nodding their heads to the tune of tens of thousands – or sometimes even millions – of dollars at a time, they spar with their wallets to see who can reach deepest for the best. Nowhere is the pool of buyers more international, the horses more numerous or the spending more serious than at the premier auctions hosted each November by Keeneland and Fasig-Tipton in Lexington, where in 2016 a total of 2,741 horses were reported sold for $269,365,000. With a particularly exciting group of mares catalogued for those sales this year, including champions Songbird and Tepin at Fasig-Tipton and champion Stellar Wind and the remarkable Lady Eli at Keeneland, the sport of buying will be at its most fever pitched. The first crop of weanlings by Triple Crown winner American Pharoah will add even more zest. Relatively new buyers such as Phoenix Thoroughbreds are expected to jump into this marketplace, and with the yearling sales having been strong this summer, prices

could be strong and potential bidders many. Results from these sales during the past five years perhaps provide the best guide as to which players could be most formidable. No fewer than a dozen top entities representing involvement in breeding on five continents have each spent more than $16.6 million at the November sales, and most of them can be expected to be in the chase again this year.
Mandy Pope: leading the way at the top of the buying tree
Together, they have accounted for $308.4 million in purchases just at these venues, and when any one of them truly wants to buy just
about any horse, they have the capital to do it. Leading the way has been Mandy Pope and her Whisper Hill Farm. When Pope targets a horse she lets no one get in her way, proving her determination for the first time when buying 2011 American Horse of the Year Havre De Grace, a daughter of Saint Liam offered as a broodmare prospect, for a world record $10m at Fasig-Tipton in 2012. From that time on Pope has bought 16 horses at the November sales for a stunning combined total of $41.63m, which yields an average price of about $2.6m. She led all adversaries last November at Keeneland with four purchases for $7.2m and was back buying yearlings this September. With her wealth coming, somewhat ironically, from her family’s Variety Wholesalers bargain retail stores, Pope has been buying thoroughbreds for decades but only recently at the top level. In addition to Havre De Grace, some of her other top buys have included: Betterbetterbetter, a Galileo half-sister to 1,000 Guineas winner Yesterday and Moyglare Stud Stakes scorer Quarter Moon who was in foal to War Front in 2013 when purchased for $5.2m; Unrivaled Belle, the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic winner in foal to Tapit when bought for $3.8m in 2016; and Kentucky
Oaks winner Plum Pretty, by Medaglia D’Oro and bought as a broodmare prospect for $4.2m in 2012. Since its landmark purchase of Vinery in Lexington in 2013, Chilean-based Don Alberto Corp. has also been driven in collecting bloodstock for its fledgling business in America and Europe, where it also races. Owned by Liliana Solari and her son Carlos Heller, Don Alberto is a subsidiary of the family’s Bethia Holdings, a giant conglomerate whose South American investments span wineries, milk production, transportation, communications, airlines, retail, financial institutions, real estate, and a hospital. Don Alberto has spent more than $32.8m on 56 horses from 2013 through 2016, and the farm was both a buyer and seller of yearlings this year in Kentucky. Among Don Alberto’s most high-profile November sales purchases have been Grade 1 winner Angela Renee, by Bernardini and acquired for $3m as a broodmare prospect in 2015, and Grade 1 winner Sarah Lynx, by Montjeu, purchased for $2.6m in foal to Street Cry in 2014. Ranking next among major spenders over the last five years are the separate operations of brothers Katsumi Yoshida and Teruya Yoshida of Japan, the emperors of Japanese racing and breeding.
The Yoshidas have nearly matched each other in their buying at the November sales, with Katsumi obtaining 24 horses for $30.17m and Teruya acquiring 25 for $29.555m under the name of his Shadai Farm. Most of their best mare acquisitions are bred to Deep Impact, the world’s leading sire by progeny earnings who stands at their Shadai Stallion Station. Katsumi Yoshida bought Grade 1 winner Zazu, by Tapit, as a broodmare prospect for $2.1m in 2012, and he paid $2.7m for multiple Grade 1 winner Sweet Reason, by Street Sense, in 2015. Teruya Yoshida’s Shadai purchases have included the $3.1m Kentucky Oaks winner Princess Of Sylmar, by Majestic Warrior, and the $2.7m Grade 1 winner Champagne D’Oro, by Medaglia D’Oro. SF Bloodstock, the worldwide thoroughbred investment operation begun in 2008 by Australian Gavin Murphy of Soros Fund Management, has been extremely active in the markets. Including purchases made in 2016 with its Australian partner Newgate Farm, SF Bloodstock has bought 105 horses at the November sales over the past five years under its own name for a total of $28.237m. However, if purchases made by other agents are included, SF Bloodstock’s total spending could soar over $30m. In 2016,

by Flatter, a $1.7m purchase in 2016 under the SF Bloodstock banner, has been entered back in this year’s Keeneland November sale.
The most active buyer during the November sales in recent years is Brad Kelley’s Calumet Farm, which has bought 200 horses for a total of $20.47m
while selling many others through various consignors. While the Maktoums have been fairly quiet during this period, MV Magnier has
selectively signed tickets on behalf of Coolmore. His five purchases for $16.65m include Bodemeister’s dam, Untouched Talent, for $5m in 2012.

US BREEDING-STOCK SALES
ONE SERIOUSLY GOOD STALLION GRADE 1 WINNERS OUT OF DISTORTED HUMOR MARES
Distorted Humor’s progeny excel on dirt and turf and he is now hitting the heights as a broodmare sire. Martin Stevens reports on a precious commodity
O
FFICIALLY the best horse to have raced this year, Arrogate, as well as four other Grade 1 winners of 2017 – Elate, New Money Honey, Practical Joke and Takaful – are all out of mares by Distorted Humor. The WinStar Farm stalwart is, clearly, an outstanding broodmare sire and although those top-notchers are trained in the US, this is an emerging trend that breeders in every breeding jurisdiction cannot afford to ignore. Distorted Humor is one of those precious commodities: a Kentucky sire whose progeny have excelled on turf as well as dirt, in North America and across the world. His 16 Group/Grade 1 winners include Aesop’s Fables, Cursory Glance and Pathfork in Europe and Australian Oaks heroine Rinky Dink from a brief spell shuttling to Australia. Plus, of course, there is a robust roster of domestic talents headed by first-crop son Funny Cide, who gave the sire his breakthrough by upstaging Empire Maker to win the Kentucky Derby, as well as titans Any Given Saturday (a brother to the dam of New Money Honey), Commentator and Drosselmeyer. It became apparent early on that Distorted Humor was an empire maker himself when the early crops of one of his sire sons, Flower Alley, yielded a horse in I’ll Have Another who, just as Funny Cide had, notched victories in the first two legs of the Triple Crown. It did not take long for mares by Distorted Humor to ensure his name appeared in the second generation of classy performers either, with first-crop daughters coming up

with the stakes winners Enjoy The Score and US Cavalry, as well as a bellwether of the sire’s future global influence in the French Listed-placed Danse Grecque. That drip, drip, drip of talented maternal grandchildren for Distorted Humor turned into a gush, not just in America, where Arrogate and co are joined by Tapit’s Donn Handicap hero Constitution, but also in Australia, where One More Honey, a daughter of Onemorenomore, is a Group 2 winner and was fourth in the Flight Stakes last month; in Japan, where the Henny Hughes colt Moanin took the Grade 1 February Stakes; and in Europe, where the More Than Ready colt Boynton landed the Superlative Stakes and finished third in the Vintage Stakes. Boynton is a paragon of the potency of Distorted Humor mares, as he is a half-brother to Constitution and to Aqueduct Grade 3 winner Jacaranda. Their dam, Baffled, who finished third in the Albany Stakes for Jeremy Noseda, was sold to Bridlewood Farm for a sale-topping $3.5 million at Fasig-Tipton last November. Having clicked with Tapit (by Pulpit out of an Unbridled mare) and More Than Ready (by Southern Halo out of a Woodman mare), Baffled provides a snapshot of the versatility of Distorted Humor mares.
The nine winners at the highest level out of his daughters are by eight different stallions and it is striking, from a European perspective, that the one who doubled up is Medaglia D’Oro – the sire of Elate, who has eclipsed her rivals in the Beldame Stakes and Alabama Stakes on her last two starts, and New Money Honey, winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf last year and the Belmont Oaks in July.
M
EDAGLIA D’ORO will no doubt find a few more daughters of Distorted Humor grace his court at Jonabell Farm next year, and breeders may also be encouraged to send them to his younger, more affordable sons such as Mshawish, Vancouver and Violence. Perhaps it would even encourage them to look at other El Prado-line sires for Distorted Humor mares: Kitten’s Joy, perhaps, or his Lanwades Stud-based son Bobby’s Kitten. Incidentally, the cross of Distorted Humor over mares by El Prado’s sire Sadler’s Wells is responsible for all three of his European Group 1 winners and although the reverse cross or its variations has not had Superstar Arrogate is out of a dam by Distorted Humor

much exposure, the very limited evidence suggests it could be successful. Ivory Gala, for example, is a Listed runner-up by Sadler’s Wells’ son and heir Galileo out of a daughter of Distorted Humor’s sire Forty Niner; she is the dam of recent Godolphin Stakes runner-up Red Galileo. Certain astute breeders have continued to emulate the cross that provided Aesop’s Fables, Cursory Glance and Pathfork. Last year Distorted Humor was sent, among others, Affectionately, a Galileo half-sister to Invincible Spirit, and Time On, a Sadler’s Wells sister to the dam of Cursory Glance. Looking at the success of Medaglia D’Oro with Distorted Humor mares, sending Galileo a high-class and/or blueblooded daughter of his would seem an avenue worth exploring, although only one foal has been born on that cross according to Weatherbys.
A less expensive iteration of the cross, using Galileo’s sons, would also be an interesting proposition. It is also noteworthy that Japanese star Moanin is by Henny Hughes, a son of Hennessy who is also the paternal grandsire of the sensational Scat Daddy. There are bound to be plenty of sons of Scat Daddy retired to stud in seasons ahead as stallion masters move to secure his legacy, and Distorted Humor mares could be a complementary ingredient in matings to them. The breeding-stock sales at Keeneland and Fasig-Tipton will offer the widest range of such mares and breeders at home and away ought to have those representatives of such an internationally proven sire and grandsire on their radar. And, as with any sire who starts his stallion career at an accessible fee but rises through the ranks, we might

reasonably expect his profile as broodmare sire to grow as more and more of his better-bred daughters produce more and more foals. The mares conceived when Distorted Humor stood at peak fees of $225,000 and $300,000 – a group that includes Cheery, the daughter of Kentucky Oaks third Yell who has produced Elate as her first foal – are still only aged eight and nine. Every crop since then has been bred from fees between $80,000 and $150,000. Don’t forget, too, that as Distorted Humor is by Forty Niner out of a Danzig mare, his daughters are relatively easy to mate. The only drawback is, thanks to Arrogate and Elate in particular, the sire’s prowess in the damsire department is no longer a secret. At least any associated premium on their value in Kentucky next month should be mitigated by the breadth of choice.

US BREEDING-STOCK SALES
Bill Oppenheim on the state of the thoroughbred market in the US – one that has proved its resilience time and again
I
N 1983, a Nijinsky half-brother to Triple Crown winner and then new hot sire Seattle Slew, who would become Seattle Dancer, set a world record for a yearling thoroughbred sold at public auction, for $13.1 million – a record that still stands. At that time 80 per cent of the top stallions stood in North America. Three years later, in 1986, a deep recession took hold of the thoroughbred industry on both sides of the Atlantic that lasted until 1992. It took until 1995 until the green shoots of recovery took hold. That boom lasted, in the thoroughbred industry, until mid-2008 when the world economic collapse took the thoroughbred market down with it, as the accompanying tables show. The current recovery began in 2013, and prices have materially advanced at this year’s yearling sales for the first time since.
History tells us there will be plenty of gems to be found Well before the 1986-92 recession, new Arab interests including the Maktoum family and Prince Khalid Abdullah began acquiring top American stock, and during the recession Japanese interests, mainly the Yoshida family, also began acquiring top American bloodstock, including Sunday Silence. At the same time Sadler’s Wells, at Coolmore, was re-establishing the European stallion market so successfully that by the mid-2000s the balance of top stallions was back to 50-50 between Europe and North America. Over the past 20 years, American pedigrees have become increasingly hard for Europeans to understand and that, coupled with the emergence of viable stallions and a thriving marketplace in Europe – exacerbated by the perception of American racing as drug-ridden – means that European buyers are not so sure any more what they are looking at in American sales catalogues. What has become increasingly clear, though, is that even though American

breeders have exported many of their formerly recognisable names, North America still continues to produce world-class horses – they just don’t have pedigrees many international buyers recognise. Big problem, of course, but it
does not alter the fact that North America and Europe are still by far the two biggest consistent sources of top-quality racehorses. It seems that no amount of export or drugs have caused America to become anything other than a true
world-class producer of top thoroughbreds. The continuing success of North American-bred horses on the racecourses of Europe, especially in light of the small numbers exported for racing there, is impressive testimony to this.
Part of the reason for this continuing success is the sheer size of the American marketplace. Even at its lowest ebb there were never fewer than 2,500 horses sold for less than $175m at the November Fasig-Tipton (one day) and Keeneland sales. Normally the North American market in general is twice the size of the British, Irish and French markets combined. But the other reason has to do with that intangible but crucial variable we call ‘class’.
S
INCE the 2013 recovery no fewer than 34 horses have brought final bids of $1m or more at the Kentucky November sales, and that is not because people have money to throw around: it is because buyers understand that vast cauldron of American dirt racing (and now, increasingly, a welcome surge in grass racing) continues to produce world-class racehorses, broodmare and

stallion prospects – even if the pedigrees are harder to understand. Even as the horse, and all other markets, were collapsing around us there was a major revival in the American stallion ranks. The first foals by a ‘fearsome foursome’ who all rapidly shot into the top ten sires – Tapit (Gainesway), Medaglia D’Oro (Hill ‘n’ Dale, Stonewall, then Darley), Speightstown (WinStar), and Candy Ride (Hill ‘n’ Dale, then Lane’s End) – hit the
racetracks in 2008. Kitten’s Joy’s (Ramsey Farm, now Hill ‘n’ Dale) first foals ran in 2009, the same year Sea The Stars rewrote the record books as a three-year-old in Europe. The first foals by War Front (Claiborne) raced in 2010. Curlin (Lane’s End, then Hill n’ Dale) and the surprise package Into Mischief (Spendthrift) had their first foals appear in 2012, the year Frankel concluded his own record-breaking career, followed by new top sires Pioneerof The Nile (Winstar) in 2013, the year the horse market started to recover, Quality Road (Lane’s End) in 2014, the sensational Uncle Mo (Ashford) in 2015, and Union Rags (Lane’s End) in 2016. America has produced some seriously important sires in the last ten years and will continue to do so. A couple of tips about the logistics of the Kentucky November sales. Fasig-Tipton will kick off proceedings on Monday afternoon (Sunday is a travel day when the Breeders’ Cup is in California) with a one-day sale, weanlings first, then mares and fillies that will include several multi-million
dollar offerings, such as Tepin and Songbird. Keeneland Book 1, including another superstar in Lady Eli, gets under way on the Tuesday; at Keeneland the foals and breeding stock are intermingled, rather than separated as in Europe or at Fasig-Tipton. One highlight is sure to be the first foals by American Pharoah (Ashford), in 2015 the first American Triple Crown winner in 37 years. He is represented by six weanlings at Fasig-Tipton and another 22 at Keeneland. One other thing is an absolute certainty – as American racing and breeding have proved over and over again, even with pedigrees that are harder to understand and a foal crop 40 per cent smaller than it was ten years ago – there are going to be plenty of world-class broodmares, broodmare prospects and foals who will come out of these sales. That much, history assures us, is guaranteed. US BREEDING-STOCK SALES
Young bucks looking for a fast start Chris McGrath with his pick of the mares on offer at Fasig-Tipton and Keeneland this November covered by new sires
A
LBEIT in somewhat vicarious form, this November presents a first commercial test for those who have invested in the freshest blood on the market – by choosing new sires to cover mares they are offering for sale. Of those young stallions who began their second careers in Kentucky this spring, a top fee of $50,000 was commanded
by Frosted at Darley’s Jonabell Farm. Although occasionally put in his place by American Pharoah or Arrogate, he was possibly stretched by ten furlongs – and in between sealed his status as a copper-bottomed commercial prospect with a jaw-dropping 14-length success in the Met Mile, clocking the fastest time ever in that stallion-fertile race. Everything else was in place too, as Tapit’s record US earner out of a Deputy Minister mare, herself – like her dam – a prolific winner including at Grade 2 level, and a half-sister to a champion juvenile in Midshipman. Sixteen mares from Frosted’s first book go under the hammer at Keeneland, among them one who might appeal to international shoppers in hip 277. Lophorina is a ten-year-old daughter of King’s Best out of Flagbird, one of three elite winners out of Up The Flagpole (another later becoming the dam of Mineshaft). Lophorina’s half-sister Dubai Belle has produced Little Belle, a Grade 1 winner herself and now dam of another in Dickinson. Another with California Chrome in his racing pomp: has nine mares in foal to him at Keeneland
European resonance is hip 487, a young mare by Scat Daddy and a sister to Royal Lodge winner Daddy Long Legs. Another mare with time on her side is Ekati’s Phaeton (hip 235), a Grade 2 winner. Hip 348, Tenacious Tina, is a half-sister to a multiple Graded stakes winner, including the Shoemaker Mile, in Midnight Storm; while hip 388 is a curiosity: as a daughter of Midshipman, All Star Bub’s maiden covering by Frosted will produce a foal inbred to Fleet Lady as mother of both the damsire and sire’s dam. All Star Bub, herself Graded stakes-placed, is a granddaughter of dual Grade 1 winner Tout Charmant. Frosted has also covered hip 83 at Fasig-Tipton, a four-year-old daughter of Medaglia D’Oro named Joyeria. Placed three times in a light career with Andre Fabre, she was picked up for €75,000 at Arqana last December – a fair price, even as things stood, for a daughter of dual Grade 1 winner and Kentucky Oaks runner-up Evening Jewel. The page has since benefited from the Grade 1 Triple Bend Stakes success of Denman’s Call, out of a half-sister to Evening Jewel. Two Kentucky Derby winners, California Chrome and Nyquist, share the next ledge in the market at $40,000. Nyquist stands alongside Frosted at Jonabell as a

champion two-year-old from the first crop of another in Uncle Mo, and only the second horse (after fellow Darley sire Street Sense) to add the Kentucky Derby to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. One of his most glamorous matings was with his owner’s Land Over Sea, the Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks winner whose multiple Grade 1 placings include second in the Kentucky Oaks on the eve of Nyquist’s success in the Run for the Roses. Land Over Sea, offered in foal at Fasig-Tipton as hip 85, is a half-sister to another Grade 2 winner in War Story from the family of Epitome and Green Forest. His other Fasig-Tipton cover is also an illustrious one, albeit Citiview (hip 159) is now 17 years old. Her previous foals include Midnight Lucky,
winner of two Grade 1 prizes (Acorn/Distaff Stakes) from just five start, while her sister Hookedonthefeelin, a Grade 1 winner herself, has produced two winners at that level in Pussycat Doll and rising sire Jimmy Creed. Nyquist’s 15 partners under the hammer at Keeneland, meanwhile, are headed by Is It Safe, an unraced ten-year-old daughter of Is It True, lavishly propped as hip 574 by five Graded stakes-winning siblings out of the Cryptoclearance mare Ava Knowsthecode: notably Algorithms, the young Claiborne sire; Justin Phillip, in the Alfred G Vanderbilt Handicap; and 2015 Champagne Stakes winner Greenpointcrusader. Others from Nyquist’s debut book include Cabo De Noche, hip 425, dam of a Louisiana
Derby winner in Pants On Fire; and Grade 1 Princess Rooney Handicap winner Jessica Is Back, hip 70, whose weanling filly by Liam’s Map follows her into the ring. A dual Horse of the Year and seven-time Grade 1 winner, California Chrome famously overcame a relatively blue-collar family tree as the product of an $8,000 mare and a $2,500 stud fee. But he can pin his hopes in his new career not only on performance but also on physique, the Pulpit sire-line and latent quality in his family: his dam was inbred 3 x 3 to Numbered Account, a champion runner and also a significant producer. First of his nine mates through the ring at Keeneland is hip 42, the six-year-old winner Divine Heart, a
Relentless tide of quality at every turn of the page MANY of the headline mares on offer this November are showcased elsewhere in this supplement. But they are backed up by a relentless tide of quality, whether in terms of pedigree or performance – or, more usually, both. Picking out a handful is an invidious task, but just try these snapshots from the boutique Fasig-Tipton catalogue. How priceless a foundation mare, for instance, might be the sister to American Pharoah himself, hip 141? The three-year-old Grade 1-placed American Cleopatra is in foal to Uncle Mo (next into the ring, by the way: the dam of this year’s Test Stakes winner American Gal). Or how about the dam of juvenile champion Classic Empire, in foal to
Pioneerof The Nile (hip 112)? She is followed directly into the ring by Montjeu’s Canadian International winner Sarah Lynx, in foal to War Front. An unraced three-year-old daughter of Tapit, hip 125, is sister not only to Grade 1 winner Cupid but to the sale-topper at Keeneland September. A few minutes later in will walk hip 133, the dam of Paradise Woods carrying a sister to that dual Grade 1 winner, followed two lots later by the dam of Hopeful Stakes winner Sporting Chance, in foal to Tapizar. You can buy Pressurizing, a seven-year-old half-sister to Zenyatta as hip 109, in foal to Speightstown – sire of her weanling filly, selling as hip 19. But wait – over at Keeneland,
here’s hip 200: another half-sister to Zenyatta, the 14-year-old Balance, a daughter of Thunder Gulch and a multiple Grade 1 winner herself, in foal to Uncle Mo. And where on earth do you go from there, in a catalogue of such scope? Perhaps the best way to get a reading is a random sample of Tapit’s Keeneland weanlings. These include a brother to Hansen (hip 338); and foals out of Quarter Moon’s daughter ), Shared (hip 39), Belief’s sister (270) and
Weekend Surprise’s granddaughter (332); and out of Grade 1 winners such as My Conquestadory (105) and Mushka (289). Or how about a couple of mares covered by Pioneerof The Nile since he produced American Pharoah? Try hip 177, the Classic-placed Up, an eight-year-old half-sister by Galileo to Dutch Art; or hip 201, a Grade 1-placed six-year-old half-sister to Lookin At Lee. The WinStar sire’s weanlings, meanwhile, include a filly out of a sister to Speightstown as hip 251.
Zenyatta: her half-sister by Henrythenavigator, carrying to Speightstown, is available to buy as hip 109
Hip 356, the winning Curlin mare Trensita, has had a timely update – now half-sister to two elite winners after the success of Free Drop Billy in the Breeders’ Futurity just next door to the sales complex last weekend. Their dam Trensa has already produced Hawkbill to win the Eclipse, and Trensita has had a maiden covering by More Than Ready. But if European prospectors could scale just one pinnacle, perhaps it would be hip 90. The Galileo four-year-old Luxury is well named, as a half-sister to Shamardal; the pair out of a sister to Street Cry. Throw in a War Front cover and you can’t begin to put a price on her. In Lexington this November, however, that will hardly make her unique.

half-sister to two Grade 1 winners in Include Me Out and Check The Label out of a half-sister to the dams of two others. Although unraced, the five-year-old Candy Ride mare A.P. Candy also brings a classy page as hip 397: she is a half-sister to Wind Fire, a dual Listed winner and Flying Childers runner-up for David Brown, out of a sister to Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes winner Majestic Warrior – the result, in turn, of a match between A.P. Indy and dual Grade 1 winner Dream Supreme (Test Stakes/Ballerina Handicap). Hip 186, You Bought Her, is a nine-time winner with multiple Graded stakes podiums to her name – this her maiden cover at seven; while a page of international resonance backs up the nine-year-old Empire Maker mare Make Light (hip 618), as a half-sister to Seek Again, who won the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby before running Wise Dan to a head in the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic. That proficiency on turf reflected the fact that the dam is by Danehill out of the Blushing Groom mare Nashmeel, who won the Group 2 Prix d’Astarte before finishing second in two grass Grade 1s in North America. It will be fascinating to see how Air Force Blue fares back in the land of his foaling after a European racing career of vivid extremes: a triple Group 1-winning champion at two, he failed to train on despite a big, scopey frame. Billed as Aidan O’Brien’s best ever two-year-old, he started out at Ashford at $25,000 with a sire of transatlantic fame in War Front and a second dam, champion juvenile filly Flanders, who produced
four-time Grade 1 winner Surfside. Unsurprisingly, the 16 mares in foal to Air Force Blue at Keeneland mix turf and dirt profiles. The grass should be greener for hip 794, Zeta, an unraced three-year-old daughter of New Approach from a top-class Niarchos family. Her Group-placed dam is a half-sister to Arc winner Bago and young sire Maxios, not to mention a Frankel colt who recently won his second start for Aidan O’Brien; their dam in turn being out of Machiavellian’s Group 1-winning sister Coup De Genie. That is some page to have acquired for just 32,000gns by BBA Ireland, as recently as February at Tattersalls. Others with turf orientation include hip 121, the 12-year-old Sholokhov mare Peace Royale, a dual Group 3 winner whose previous progeny include German 1,000 Guineas runner-up Peace In Motion; while hip 230, Dublin Four, is a seven-year-old Henrythenavigator mare who shares a dam with War Front’s useful juvenile of last year, Intelligence Cross. There is some dirt royalty close up in the family tree of hip 389, an unraced six-year-old daughter of Unbridled’s Song out of a Smart Strike half-sister to A.P. Indy’s blue-hen dam Weekend Surprise.
A
NOTHER whose racing career ended in anticlimax was Runhappy, but those who put aside the unhappy dramas surrounding his former trainer will recall him as an Eclipse Awardwinning sprinter of pulverising speed, setting a track record in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint and a stakes record in the King’s Bishop. From the first crop of Super Saver, with sound genetic bedrock and conformation, he started at Claiborne with a fee of $25,000. The 21 mares carrying Runhappy foals into the ring at Keeneland include hip 111, Oblige, an unraced eight-year-old daughter of Bernardini who produced a Grade 2 scorer this summer in Hunter O’Riley. Her dam is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Diplomat Lady. European shoppers will be interested in 21 mares selling at Keeneland carrying foals by Flintshire, Dansili’s globetrotting earner of $9.5 million. His dam is a sister to the dam of Enable, and he retired to Hill ‘n’ Dale for a coalition of powerful interests (including his own breeders at Juddmonte) at $20,000. As a daughter of A.P. Indy out of Empire Maker’s blue-hen dam Toussaud, Gateway has not lived up to her pedigree, being unraced herself and yet to make an impression with half a dozen living foals. As hip 945, however, the
11-year-old still represents a genuinely regal family. And another of Flintshire’s first partners, the multiple Graded stakes-placed Sakhee mare Tabreed (hip 757), is a half-sister to Ballysax winner Moiqen and Beresford runner-up Rekaab out of a daughter of Yorkshire Oaks winner Roseate Tern. There are also turf possibilities about Taylor Made’s new recruit at the same fee, Mshawish. A hard-knocking son of Medaglia D’Oro who won Grade 1s on
both dirt and turf, his 14 mares in foal at Keeneland include hip 515, a winner by Arch out of a half-sister to Grade 1 Spinster winner Carriage Trail. Taylor Made has also welcomed Not This Time,, who looks an interesting prospect at $15,000. A Giant’s Causeway half-brother to Liam’s Map – the speed and quality of their family is
appraised in connection with the latter’s first weanlings elsewhere in this supplement – he looked an exceptional prospect when bearing down on Classic Empire in the Mshawish: Grade 1 winner on turf and dirt has 14 mares in foal to him at Keeneland
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, the pair clear, but was forced into retirement by injury. Not This Time has the biggest footprint of all the new sires on the Keeneland catalogue, with 31 partners heading into the ring. These include an unraced young mare by Ghostzapper, hip 409, out of Grade 1 Test winner Capote Bell; and hip 725, a five-year-old winning Candy Ride mare out of a sister to two Grade 1 winners in Ashado and Sunriver. Weanlings by rookie sires, pages 14-15
THE WORLD’S STAGE The deepest and most compelling catalogue of the bloodstock season is at Keeneland this November. From exceptional race fillies, to Champion-producing mares and weanlings by some of the world’s leading sires, your opportunity for global success starts here.

US BREEDING-STOCK SALES Michele MacDonald talks to leading owner Rick Porter about his fight with serious illness and the part Songbird played in his recuperation
R
ICK PORTER has experienced much more than the standard share of exhilarating highs and heartbreaking lows, both in racing and life in general. For much of the past several years, Porter, 77, has been battling the demons of cancer, tumors that have sent him through various treatments and at least once into critical condition when it was uncertain he would survive. Coinciding with that crisis has been the starburst career of his twice American champion filly Songbird, who Porter credits with uplifting him through his illness and giving him the will to battle onward. Their remarkable journey together will come to a dramatic conclusion on November 6 when Porter will watch Songbird enter the sales ring at Fasig-Tipton in Kentucky as one of the most illustrious broodmare prospects ever to grace that pavilion. Her record stands at 13 wins in 15 starts, including nine Grade 1 victories, and $4,692,000 in earnings. But Porter hopes there will be much more to their individual stories. About one month prior to the sale, Porter received news that, following his inclusion in a clinical trial at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston with help from Spendthrift Farm owner B Wayne Hughes, his cancer is in “complete remission”. “It’s an absolute miracle,” Porter says. Songbird – whose future foals undoubtedly will be highly prized for their racing potential – has been a major inspiration in Porter’s return to health and he describes her as “definitely a once-in-a-lifetime horse”. “She wasn’t going to change anything [about the cancer] but she gave me so much to look forward to – I so much wanted to see her run and to see just how good she was. I’ve never had a horse like her before.” While selling such a special individual is fraught with unique tensions, Porter is more disappointed that he will not get to see Songbird race anymore than he is about watching her go through the sales ring. Selling his horses after they are retired from competition has been an integral part of his successful racing game plan. That strategy has provided
DEFYING THE ODDS WITH THE HELP OF ONE SPECIAL FILLY exceptional capital for his stable in years past, and he is no stranger to the high theatrics of sending a champion through the auction ring. At Fasig-Tipton’s 2012 November sale, he sat transfixed in the pavilion as bidding on his Havre De Grace, a $380,000 yearling purchase who was voted the 2011 American Horse of the Year, soared higher and higher. Before, during and after the hammer fell on a world-record $10 million bid from Mandy Pope of Whisper Hill Farm, Porter says he experienced chills of excitement watching Havre De Grace draw the desire of potential buyers. Yet he purposefully tried not to show any emotion. Fasig-Tipton commentator Terence Collier had asked for quiet in the pavilion, and there were more bidders still vying for the mare once she had reached the stratospheric $6m level than most could remember at any time in the past.
“At the end, you heard Terence say, ‘Mr Porter, remind me never to play poker with you,’” Porter recalled with a chuckle. “I never cracked a smile. You can’t when people are bidding a lot of money,” he says. “I was just enjoying looking at her and seeing how much everybody else wanted her.”
B
UT even that Horse of the Year, who Porter called “amazing,” is not the same caliber as Songbird, he says. “Look at their race records. Songbird ran 15 times and lost only twice and by a total distance of only a neck,” he says, counting the margin of her narrowest of defeats by another multiple champion, Hughes’s Beholder, in the 2016 Breeders’ Cup Distaff as less than whiskers. “I think that’s the best race I ever saw, particularly from the quarter pole to home,” Porter says. “Whoever had their neck
stretched out the most at the wire would be the winner. “If I had to get beat, I’m glad to get beaten by someone who helped me very much and by a Hall of Fame trainer in Richard Mandella. We got beat by the big boys,” he says. In what proved to be Songbird’s finale, she was caught at the end of the Grade 1 Personal Ensign Stakes at Saratoga this summer by another top female runner, Forever Unbridled, losing by a neck. Following that race, Songbird was given a thorough veterinary examination and was found to have enlarged suspensory ligaments in both hind legs as well as bone bruising. Porter, who was devastated when another top filly he campaigned, Eight Belles, shattered both front ankles after finishing a gallant second to champion Big Brown in the 2008 Kentucky Derby, ruled out taking any risks with Songbird.
Call for advocacy organisation to protect owners’ interests AS ONE of the leading owners in America, Rick Porter believes that an advocacy organisation with a mission to protect the interests of owners would be a major asset to those who invest so much into putting the sport’s athletes on course. “The owners need a strong association so that we can have a fair chance in dealing with the racetracks. We need more strength – there are a lot of things that would be different if the owners had more say, and the racetracks couldn’t go on without us,” Porter said. He also suggests that a new lottery type of wager that would not require
handicapping skills and knowledge of racing would be a boon in generating more betting revenue for the sport. “The biggest thing we need to do is to try to figure out how to get more people interested in betting,” Porter said. “[A lottery type wager] would make it easier and could increase handle meaningfully.” Social media, which Porter’s Fox Hill Farm uses to keep more than 8,000 Facebook followers up to date on the stable’s horses, could be better utilised. “That would be the biggest way to get a lottery type wager going,” he said. After buying yearlings in
what proved to be a strong market this summer, Porter said he sees as a resurgence in racing and breeding. “The stock market’s strength had to have helped [buyers’] net worth, but maybe people are just interested in buying horses right now,” he said. Regarding his own stable, he and his assistant Victoria Keith place particular emphasis on finding special names for his horses. Songbird was named after the late American singer Eva Cassidy, whose album of that name was propelled into a hit after it was promoted primarily by the late Sir Terry Wogan on his BBC Radio 2 breakfast show.
“We have a situation where it would be dangerous for Songbird to continue training,” Porter says in announcing her retirement from racing. “We absolutely cannot risk having another Eight Belles kind of devastation and are ultimately happy that Songbird is retiring in good health.” Fasig-Tipton is a natural destination for Porter with Songbird as the company’s Newtown Paddocks facility in Lexington has been the scene of more than one unforgettable result. In addition to Havre De Grace, Porter has sold two other highly valuable broodmare prospects at the single-session auction. In 2007, he saw his Round Pond, who had triumphed in the previous year’s Breeders’ Cup Distaff, bring $5.75m from John Ferguson on behalf of Sheikh Mohammed, with that price being the highest in 22 years at Fasig-Tipton. Round Pond was a $105,000 yearling acquisition. Porter scored again when his $400,000 two-year-old purchase Joyful Victory, a daughter of Tapit who went on to Grade 1 success and amassed more than $1.2m while racing, brought $2m from Aaron and Marie Jones at the sale in 2013. A native of Delaware whose family business, Porter Automotive Group, was started by his grandfather in 1925, Porter went to the races with his family while growing up and bought his first racehorse in 1994. Over time, he has

stuck with a relatively simple plan that has yielded gold. He works with bloodstock agent Tom McGreevey to identify potential athletes at yearling sales, relies on his assistant Victoria for research information, and then sticks with a budget of about $3-4m annually. He aims to buy horses primarily based on their athletic potential but who also possess enough pedigree that they can valuable as stallions or broodmares, he says. In addition to his top-class fillies, Porter hit a huge jackpot with Hard Spun. The son of Danzig was purchased for $400,000 after failing to meet his reserve at the 2005 Keeneland September yearling
sale, and Porter sold breeding rights in the colt to Darley for a reported total of $35m, including a bonus for a Grade 1 win. Porter has also raced 2009 champion sprinter Kodiak Kowboy and Grade 2 winners Rockport Harbor and Old Fashioned, all of whom went on to stud careers. But none have compared to Songbird, a particularly attractive daughter of Medaglia D’Oro and the multiple stakes-winning West Acre mare Ivanavinalot. Songbird soared to become a national heroine in America to her legions of fans. “She’s meant more to me than any other,” Porter says. With his cancer in remission,
Porter returned to the yearling sales this fall, spending a total of $3,025,000 on five colts and five fillies at Keeneland in addition to the $675,000 he spent on a colt and a filly at Saratoga. Overall, he says he has 14 yearlings and 17 two-year-olds as he looks to the future while hoping for another champion. Among the most promising are a juvenile Medaglia D’Oro filly named Forever and a two-year-old Curlin colt named New Colossus. “We’ll have a lot of activity coming up in the next year. I’d like to get another good horse. But I’m not even thinking about another Songbird – you really can’t ever imagine that,” Porter says.

US BREEDING-STOCK SALES
NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK Chris McGrath on the stallions with their first weanlings on offer at Lexington this fall
T
HERE is more to life than American Pharoah and several other rookie sires who merit consideration make their debut in the sales ring this November. At $40,000, the next rung on the fees ladder among those covering their first mares last year was occupied by two recruits to Lane’s End: Tonalist and Honor Code. The latter had an obvious glamour: from the final crop of sire of sires A.P. Indy out of a Storm Cat granddaughter of Serena’s Song, with looks to match, and winner of two resonant, sire-making Grade 1s in the Met Mile and Whitney. His 19 Keeneland weanlings include hip 173 and hip 234, half-brothers to Grade 1 scorers in Hollywood Derby winner Unbridled Command and Blue Grass Stakes winner General Quarters respectively. One with particular appeal to European shoppers may be hip 491, out of a half-sister to Eclipse and Champion Stakes winner David Junior. Their dam in turn is a sister to Arlington Million winner Paradise Creek and a half-sister to two Grade 1 winners in Forbidden Apple and Wild Event, as well as to
the granddam of Sixties Song and Bobby’s Kitten. All these, incidentally, out of a half-sister to Theatrical – and hip 453 also has a notable third dam in Breeders’ Cup Distaff champion Jewel Princess, whose daughters include the dam of Grade 1 winner Dancing Rags. Other eyecatchers by Honor Code include hip 152, a half-brother to a multiple Graded stakes winner in Pretty N Cool out of a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Sean Avery; and hip 215, a grandson of an unraced sister to Canadian Horse of the Year Dance Smartly, these also being half-sisters to Curlin’s sire Smart Strike. An Honor Code weanling filly can also be found at Fasig-Tipton as hip 28: a half-sister out of a multiple Graded stakes winner to Royal Mo, who earlier this year beat Irap in the Grade 3 Robert E Lewis Stakes before finishing a length third in the Santa Anita Derby. Thirteen mares coming under the hammer at Keeneland also arrive with the bonus of an Honor Code covering. These include Fame And Fortune (hip 50), a winning Unbridled’s Song half-sister to Grade 1 Whitney Palace Malice in his racing pomp: has 23 weanlings to represent him at Keeneland
Invitational winner and Met Mile runner-up Cross Traffic, out of dual Grade 1 winner Stop Traffic. Tapit is now starting to be represented at stud by sons born as his books began to go upmarket. One such, Tonalist, went to stud with a highly accomplished and diverse Grade 1 portfolio. Belmont winners can have their work cut out at stud but this one redressed any prejudices with two Jockey Club Gold Cups and a Cigar Mile. And he comes from a strong female line, tracing to a vital fourth dam in Missy Baba via a second dam, Toll Booth, whose daughters produced two other Grade 1 winners (notably Havre De Grace). Tonalist has 23 foals catalogued at Keeneland, including the very first weanling through the ring: hip 2 is out of a Grade 2-placed mare who set a track record at Arlington, out of an unraced sister to Dance Smartly, the Canadian champion mentioned above in connection with hip 215. Hip 113 and hip 337 have distinguished third dams: respectively champion racemare Princess Rooney and blue hen Best In Show (whose daughters variously won the Kentucky Oaks and produced El Gran Senor, Try My Best, Xaar etc). Perhaps Tonalist’s most alluring weanling, however, may be one of the pair offered
at Fasig-Tipton: hip 13, a colt out of a Cat Thief half-sister to leading sophomore sire Union Rags and to the dam of another fashionable young sire in Declaration Of War. Another exciting new recruit to Lane’s End is Liam’s Map, starting at $25,000. The son of Unbridled’s Song burned brightly through eight starts, winning six including a track-record Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at Keeneland. Himself a $800,000 Keeneland yearling, he comes from a family rooted in regal speed: his granddam is
inbred 2 x 3 to Ta Wee, the lightning half-sister to Dr Fager out of Aspidistra, who herself appears on both sides of the pedigree of Unbridled, grandsire of Liam’s Map. Liam’s Map is represented by two dozen weanlings at Keeneland, notably hip 71, a filly out of Grade 1 winner Jessica Is Back; and hip 156, a half-sister to Grade 2 Fountain Of Youth winner Itsaknockout. The 23 mares arriving with a Liam’s Map cover meanwhile include one of international turf resonance
in hip 385, the 11-year-old Distorted Humor mare Agatha, a half-sister to two star sprinters in Agnes World and Hishi Akebono, as well as to the dam of Dubai Destination and Librettist. Tonalist’s predecessor on the Belmont roll of honour, Palace Malice, likewise dropped down in trip to embellish his stud profile with success in the Met Mile. Among his first visitors at Three Chimneys, at $20,000, was a winning Ghostzapper granddaughter of the great

Group Wins Weekend Surprise, dam of A.P. Indy. The resulting filly is listed as hip 255 among 23 Keeneland weanlings. Palace Malice has an interesting prospect at Fasig-Tipton in hip 67, a filly out of a half-sister to two Grade 1 producers: Hookedonthefeelin, herself a Grade 1 winner and dam of both triple Grade 1 winner Pussycat Doll and promising young sire Jimmy Creed; and Citiview, the dam of Midnight Lucky, winner of two Grade 1s in just five starts. Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Bayern, standing at $15,000 at Hill ‘n’ Dale, is by an outcross sire in Offlee Wild but represents a potent family centred on his third dam Courtly Dee, which features Green Desert among its luminaries. His 20 weanlings at Keeneland notably include hip 537, a half-sister to promising young sire The Factor. Their dam, by a top broodmare sire in Miswaki, is a half-sister to Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and Champagne Stakes runner-up Chief Seattle out of a mare by Icecapade – who is replicated
in the pedigree as Offlee Wild’s grandsire (note this filly has also been entered at Fasig-Tipton as hip 73). Other Bayern foals include hip 498, a half-sister to Tapit’s Grade 1 Debutante Stakes winner Tell A Kelly, their dam in turn out of a half-sister to French champion miler (albeit dud sire) Northjet; and hip 1165, a half-brother to multiple Grade 1-placed My Happy Face.
One new name entitled to intrigue European shoppers in Lea, who won the Grade 1 Donn Handicap on dirt but also showed smart form on turf, as you might expect of a son of the Giant’s Causeway stallion First Samurai out of a Galileo mare. Retired to Claiborne at $12,500, his 17 Keeneland weanlings include hip 748 out of a half-sister to Middle Park Stakes runner-up Rebuttal.
Waldens dispersal sure to be of keen interest ONE of the highlights at Keeneland this November will be the dispersal of the Pauls Mill stable of Ben and Elaine Walden, who have decided to renounce a longstanding investment in the turf – breeding more than 100 stakes winners including Eclipse champion Artax – to concentrate on their work in Christian ministry, writes Chris McGrath. Among the 43 mares and
weanlings on offer are Apt (hip 191), a 16-year-old A.P. Indy half-sister to Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Blame, so far responsible for three Graded stakes performers and offered in foal to Uncle Mo; and Charge Of Angels (hip 216), a seven-year-old Distorted Humor half-sister to Kentucky Derby runner-up and Haskell winner Bluegrass Cat, with a Pioneerof The Nile cover.

American Pharoah lands the Belmont Stakes in great style; his colts out of Funfair (1), Dancing Trieste (2) and Ponche De Leona (3)
Michele MacDonald on the eagerly awaited first foals to sell from the debut crop of US Triple Crown hero American Pharoah
T
HERE will be a rare new dimension to the November bloodstock sales in Kentucky, something not seen in this marketplace for nearly four decades. The first foals sired by a Triple Crown winner since Affirmed’s initial crop was born in 1981 will make their public debuts, with colts and fillies by American Pharoah sure to draw a significant share of attention from buyers. Six have been cataloged at Fasig-Tipton, while 22 have been entered for the larger Keeneland auction, and, as a group, they have drawn acclaim from horsemen who have seen or raised foals by the 2015 American Horse of the Year. “We’ve been really excited about them. His foals are nothing short of awesome,” said Mark Taylor of Taylor Made Sales, which has consigned four American Pharoah weanlings to the Keeneland sale, including a grey colt out of Tapit’s Grade 1-winning daughter Joyful Victory. That colt, hip 73, was bred by Marie Jones. “American Pharoah just seems to be putting an intangible quality in his foals. They kind of have this swagger and this balance, and they’re correct with good bone,” Taylor said. Gabriel Duignan of Paramount Sales, which is also consigning four American Pharoah weanlings at Keeneland, praised the general quality of the foals. “I think he’s throwing a lot of himself,” Duignan said. “They have exceptional minds, good action and they’re just overall solid horses.” American Pharoah covered 208 mares in his first season at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud. Service to the son of Pioneerof The Nile was offered to some breeders at a special arrangement of two mares for the price of one. With his extraordinary race record and a powerful breeders’ incentive, the horse received a large number of high-quality runners and producers, and his foals reflect that level of support. “As a rule, they’re big, strong, correct horses who are just like him in that they’re very good-moving horses. We have a big group of them on the farm and they all seem to have inherited his exceptional disposition too,” said Ashford manager Dermot Ryan.

“Not surprisingly, there has been a huge amount of excitement surrounding his first foals. He has been supported by the best breeders and the foals are out of the highest-quality mares, so we expect that excitement to spill over into the auction ring,” Ryan continued. “I don’t think the significance of a Triple Crown winner’s foals being offered for the first time in so long will be lost on people, and there’s sure to be a lot of buzz about them.” At Fasig-Tipton, the filly who resulted from American Pharoah’s first covering at Ashford will be offered by Eaton Sales. As a half-sister to
Bodemeister – the young sire of Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming – the filly out of the Storm Cat mare Untouched Talent is a potential long-term jewel for any stable. MV Magnier paid $5 million for Untouched Talent at Fasig-Tipton in 2012 and the Graded stakes winner produced fillies by Galileo in 2014 and 2015. Foaled on January 15, the American Pharoah filly is cataloged as hip 46. Another intriguing American Pharoah foal at Fasig-Tipton is a bay colt produced by Dancing Trieste, the dam of Coolmore’s stakes-winning Giovanni

T KEENELAND, five of the weanlings by the Triple Crown winner are out of Grade 1 winners and two are half-brothers to Grade/Group 1 winners. Among the most eyecatching of the catalogue pages is that belonging to hip 283, a grey colt out of the Holy Bull mare Mekko Hokte and thus a half-brother to Coolmore’s sensational multiple Group 1 winner Caravaggio. Paramount Sales has consigned the colt, who was bred by Windmill Manor Farm and Petaluma Bloodstock. “He’s exceptional. You couldn’t ask for a nicer foal,” said Duignan. “He has great
action and quality. He’s a special foal.” The Niarchos family bought Mekko Hokte’s yearling filly by Scat Daddy for $550,000 at Keeneland in September. Another particularly prominent American Pharoah weanling at Keeneland is hip
2016 Keeneland September yearling sale. Another noteworthy American Pharoah colt at Keeneland is hip 64, consigned by Hunter Valley Farm and bred in Kentucky by Ciaran Conroy’s Irish-based Glenvale Stud. The bay colt’s dam is Grade 1 winner Harmony Lodge, by Hennessy, who has already produced Grade 3 winner Stratford Hill. Also at Keeneland, Frank Stronach’s Adena Springs has consigned American Pharoah fillies out of Grade 1 winners Cat Moves (hip 32), Life At Ten (hip 82) and Ariege (hip 399), along with a filly out of Grade 2 winner Capital Plan (hip 29). The dams of those foals are also catalogued for sale after Stronach’s announcement that he is entertaining offers for his Adena Springs property near Paris, Kentucky. Adena has consigned a total of 111 individuals to the Keeneland sale.

Racing Post Friday, October 13, 2017
Of all the different kinds of investment opportunity at the US breeding-stock sales, where do you look for the best value? Mick Flanagan I suppose we’d be looking for a mare who’s young enough, maybe under 13, 14 years of age, with a good commercial cover inside her, so that year one you own her you’ve something to sell a few months later. For me, being tied in with China Horse Club, obviously they have a lot of stallion equity [in the US] so we’ll be buying a bunch of mares to support those stallions. I hear there are a number of dams of Grade 1 winners, so we’ll value them and watch them through. Luke Lillingston I guess it’s always with a European eye. Probably at the back of the book, animals who maybe have been covered by cheaper horses, which gets them pushed backwards and missed by Europeans who have come for the early part of the sale and then gone home. Hugo Merry In the old days, European mares used to be better value. But everyone’s watching more closely nowadays. At the top end I find the value is hard to find – but you do get a chance. I bought the dam of Royal Decree [dam of smart three-year-old War Decree] carrying her first foal there. It’s just a case of lots of homework. Eamonn Reilly European-bred mares: fillies who have raced in Europe and been exported to America. They don’t always appreciate the pedigree, even if they’ve been good racemares over there. Those can fall between the cracks. Can American blood still usefully reinvigorate European families? MF Absolutely, there are a number of different American sires who worked in the past in Europe and these days we’ve still got Distorted Humor, we’ve still got Speightstown, we potentially even have Pioneerof The Nile, there’s a bunch of horses over there who could reinvigorate the bloodstock here. LL Very much so. Quality can always invigorate – it just needs to be the right kind of thing. I think European and American blood has drifted apart rather a lot but now it’s perhaps starting to come back a little closer together. Answering the questions (from left): Mick Flanagan, Luke Lillingston, Hugo Merry and Eamonn Reilly
Four agents answer our questions as they prepare to return to Lexington
HM You only have to look at the success of Ballydoyle with War Front, with Hennessy mares, and so on. That influence is very good for over here. We’ve never given up on it, never deserted. I know there’s been a lot of downplay but for us it’s always been a good place to buy stock. ER Very much so. Think of the likes of Toirneach who I bought as a yearling: she turned out to be the dam of Pleascach, a
Group 1 winner. It might not happen on the racetrack but the bloodlines can still come through. It can take time, might not happen overnight, but I’m a great believer that good American fillies will come through if you show the patience. Which young American sire(s) are you following? MF Orb and Bodemeister. I like what I see at the sales, so hopefully that carries through and they can keep getting runners. LL I was very keen on Violence’s foals two years ago. Unfortunately I didn’t have any investment in the horse but I find him very interesting, and he’s been vindicating that impression. HM Pioneerof The Nile is getting better and better books. I bought a couple of very nice
fillies by him in September, they had terrific families. He’s on the up and up. ER I love Uncle Mo’s stock. He’s proven now so I guess he’s not really up-and-coming – but he’d be the one. What is the best buy or best bit of luck you have had at American breeding-stock sales? MF The best luck I suppose was a foal I bought a couple of years ago by Stay Thirsty for $12,500. I reoffered him at Keeneland September and he made $160,000. LL Two really good buys, both at Keeneland and both for Lordship Stud: La Sky, with the foal she was carrying at the time; she went on to breed Love Divine, who in turn bred Sixties Icon; and also Swiss Lake, who has become a bit of a legend. HM J Wonder was a good buy: everyone thought I was mad giving so much for her [$300,000] as a foal, but she was by Footstepsinthesand from a wonderful European family and subsequently went on to become a Group winner. ER A mare called Lemon Kiss. She bred a Grade 1 winner by Medaglia D’Oro, Lochte. I bought her at Keeneland for $200,000. And what are your expectations for American Pharoah in his next career? MF He’s absolutely a monster. He was a fabulous racehorse, I was there for his Belmont win. I’ve seen a bunch of his foals, I manage a bunch of his foals – and they’re superb. We’re going to drive mares into him over the next few years and hopefully he gets the runners. LL He ought to be a very good stallion in America. Whether that sire-line can translate to over here I’d have my doubts but I guess given where he’s standing, it will probably be given every chance. So that will be fascinating. HM I’m sure he’s getting some terrific mares from the Coolmore operation, and also from lots of American breeders, so he’d have as good a chance as any young stallion coming along. It’s a great sire-line and hopefully it’s going to be another big story. ER I think it’s going to be very, very exciting with the book of mares Coolmore and other farms sent him. With that sire-line, you have to have great expectations.

UNIFIED MGSW & G1 PLACED SON OF CANDY RIDE (ARG) Winner of the Peter Pan S. (G2) in 1:47 (since 1983, only two horses have recorded faster times) “He had great speed, he’d go: 22, :45, :56, 1:08 on the bridle and finish up.
