BLOODSTOCK SPECIAL NEW SIRES FOR 2024
T
HERE are some big-name new sires for 2024, and not just in Britain and Ireland, with Ace Impact retired to Haras de Beaumont and Equinox to Shadai Stallion Station further afield. The pair were arguably the standout performers anywhere in 2023. The former starts out at €40,000 and the latter at the equivalent of around £110,000/€128,000. Closer to home, the punchiest price for a member of the 2024 freshman set is Paddington, who starts his second career at €55,000 at Coolmore. Paddington made the final select four for the Horse of the Year gong at the ROA Awards last month, and when you consider that two of them were Champion Hurdle hero Constitution Hill and Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Galopin Des Champs, it says much for his 2023 campaign. There were comparisons made to ‘Iron Horse’ Giant’s Causeway as he rattled off four Group 1s on the spin – the Irish 2,000 Guineas, St James’s Palace Stakes, Eclipse and Sussex Stakes – and the son of Siyouni is an intriguing addition to the Fethard ranks. Last year’s 2,000 Guineas winner Chaldean is also a new option for breeders, in his case at £25,000 as he joins champion British and Irish sire Frankel at Banstead Manor. He is a half-brother to Capital Stud stallion Alkumait and that one’s full-sister Get Ahead, who sold to William Haggas on behalf of First Bloodstock for 2,500,000gns at Tattersalls last month. The ranks of new sires is awash with Classic heroes, in fact, as Hurricane Lane, Mac Swiney, Modern Games and Native Trail also stand their first seasons at stud in 2024. The first-named is ostensibly a National Hunt stallion, having been bought by Coolmore off Godolphin, but as an Irish Derby and St Leger winner who is one of the best sons of Frankel, and from a fine Aga Khan family to boot, it would be a shame if a Flat breeder or three did not give Hurricane Lane some consideration. Amhran Na Bhfiann Age: seven Colour: bay Pedigree: Galileo - Alluring Park (Green Desert) Standing at Knockhouse Stud Price: €1,500 Racing Post Rating high of 111 A regally bred son of Galileo, Amhran Na Bhfiann rates an intriguing addition to the National Hunt stallion ranks in Ireland. He raced once as a two-yearold for Aidan O’Brien and Coolmore and then on his second start at three, in the Covid-blighted year of 2020, was a fine 66-1 third to his front-running stablemate Serpentine in the Derby at Epsom. He shed his maiden tag by 13 lengths on his first start at four at Dundalk, and the bay kicked on from there, running out a seven-length winner of the Group 2 Curragh Cup. His pedigree is a major attraction as he is a brother to Oaks heroine Was, Group 3 scorer Douglas Macarthur and the Pattern-placed Al Naamah, a 5,000,000gns Tattersalls Book 1 graduate when selling to Al Shaqab Racing from Lodge Park Stud in 2013. They are out of the Green Desert mare Alluring Park, a
winner and stakes-placed halfsister to Derby winner New Approach and Group winner and dual Group 1-placed Dazzling Park, and a full-sister to star Japanese sprinter Shinko Forest, and out of the brilliant producer Park Express.
Asymmetric 5 b Showcasing - Swirral Edge (Hellvelyn), Ballyhane Stud, €7,000, RPR 109 A high-class and speedy son of Showcasing, Asymmetric arrives at Ballyhane as another son of the Whitsbury Manor Stud resident, Soldier’s Call, has left for Dullingham Park. The Redpender Stud-bred Asymmetric was a graduate of the Tattersalls December Yearling and Craven BreezeUp Sales, making 150,000gns to Stephen Hillen from Greenhills Farm at the latter in 2021. He duly won his first two starts for Alan King that year in June and was narrowly denied three in a row by Lusail in the July Stakes at Newmarket. He bounced back to defeat a high-class Group 2 Richmond Stakes field and was then a length and three-quarters third to Perfect Power in the Prix Morny.
Having swapped stables to Wesley Ward in the United States, the bay returned to Europe to be campaigned by Maurizio Guarnieri in France, for whom he won a Listed event at Deauville and was Group-placed in the Prix du Petit Couvert. Asymmetric is the first foal out of the winning Swirral Edge, a Hellvelyn mare whose progeny is now two from two in black-type contests. Her second foal, the Gleneagles colt Mill Stream, took Pattern honours in the Prix de Meautry at Deauville in August in the colours of Peter Harris. It is a speedy family as Swirral Edge is out of Pizzarra, a Shamardal half-sister to Flying Childers Stakes winner Wunders Dream.
Bolshoi Ballet 6 b Galileo - Alta Anna (Anabaa), The Beeches Stud, €3,000, RPR 119 Joining six other sons of Galileo in Coolmore’s National Hunt ranks is Bolshoi Ballet, a high-class performer who struck in two Grade 1s in the US for Aidan O’Brien and the Coolmore partners. Bred by Lynch-Bages and Rhinestone Bloodstock out of the unraced Anabaa mare Alta
Anna, he has a fine pedigree, being a brother to Australian Group 2 scorer and St Leger third Southern France among several other winners. His dam is a half-sister to Group 3 winner and Prix de Diane second Abbatiale. That Kaldoun mare is the dam of multiple Pattern winner Bewitched, dam of Galileo’s smart pair Roberto Escobarr and Pablo Escobarr. Bolshoi Ballet won on his second start at two but, like most of his sire’s progeny, came into his own over the following seasons. He won his first two Group 3 starts at three in the Ballysax and Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial, the latter by six lengths, and started favourite in the Derby as a result. He could manage only seventh behind Adayar, but the vet reported subsequently that he was struck into on his right hind in the early stages of the race The following month he scored for the first time at the top level when winning the Belmont Derby. While generally running well, it would be a little over two years between drinks for Bolshoi Ballet, as his next win came in the Grade 1 Sword Dancer Stakes at Saratoga last August,
by four and a half lengths. That would prove the final start of his career. A dual top-level winner with the looks to match, he joins the roster at The Beeches Stud as a fine prospect and for only €3,000.
Bouttemont 6 b Acclamation - Basilia (Fastnet Rock), Rathbarry Stud, €5,000, RPR 113 Bouttemont joins a roster in County Cork that includes his own hugely admirable sire Acclamation, and connections will hope he can also be an asset. The Arqana August Yearling Sale graduate proved tough and tenacious during his 26race career for Yann Barberot, winning twice in black-type company. The first of those came at Group 3 level, when he struck by a neck in the Prix de Meautry at Deauville in August 2022, while he captured the Listed Prix Hampton at Chantilly last June by an easy two lengths. Also a winner at two on his second start at Longchamp, the bay should prove attractive to commercial breeders wishing to get a rapid, sound and talented sort. Bouttemont is the first foal out of a winning Fastnet Rock half-sister to Baghadur, who defeated Too Darn Hot’s halfbrother De Treville in the Group 3 Prix de la Porte Maillot in 2015. He was subsequently renamed Joyful Trinity when sold to continue his career in Hong Kong. The dam, Basilia, is out of the Stravinsky mare Bargouzine, a winner over five furlongs on her debut as a two-year-old and Listed-placed over the same trip when second next time in the Prix la Fleche.
Castle Star 5 b Starspangledbanner Awohaam (Iffraaj), Capital Stud, €5,000, RPR 111 Capital Stud’s acquisition of Castle Star looks a shrewd move given the current market demand for speed and precocity. The son of Starspangledbanner ran seven times at two, never finishing out of the first four, and with stakes successes coming in the Listed First Flier and Group 3 Marble Hill on his third and fourth runs. Castle Star later represented Craig Bernick and Antony Beck with distinction in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes, finishing half a length second to Perfect Power while not enjoying a clear run. He had also been runner-up to Go Bears Go in the Group 2 Railway Stakes. The five-year-old, who was trained by Fozzy Stack, is the third foal out of the Iffraaj mare Awohaam, a dual winner over seven furlongs as a juvenile and the dam of three winners from four progeny to have hit the track. Awohaam is a half-sister to Moment In Time, a daughter

of Tiger Hill who landed the Group 3 Pinnacle Stakes and finished a half-length second in the Lancashire Oaks. The pair are also siblings to the multiple stakes-placed Sadler’s Wells mare Fontley, dam of stakes winner Achelois, and it is the family of Opinion Poll, winner of the Lonsdale Cup and twice second in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot.
Chaldean 4 ch Frankel - Suelita (Dutch Art), Banstead Manor Stud, £25,000, RPR 120 The first 2,000 Guineas and Dewhurst winner by the dual British and Irish champion sire Frankel, Chaldean offers breeders the opportunity to use a precocious son of Juddmonte’s superstar at an opening fee of £25,000. Bred by Whitsbury Manor Stud and a 550,000gns purchase by the Abdullah family’s operation as a foal from Tattersalls, the game chestnut was quick off the mark as a juvenile, winning at Newbury on his second start. He went on to rack up an exciting sequence in Pattern races, bravely rallying to win the Group 3 Acomb Stakes at the chief expense of Indestructible, giving the same rival a three-and-a-half-length drubbing in the Group 2 Champagne Stakes, and
crowning the season with a hard-fought victory by a head over Royal Scotsman in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes. His first appearance in public at three amounted to an unusual Classic prep in the Greenham Stakes, as Frankie Dettori was unseated leaving the stalls, but it did Chaldean no harm as the Andrew Balding-trained colt produced a career-best effort on the Rowley Mile to win the 2,000 Guineas by a length and threequarters from Hi Royal, with Royal Scotsman third. Chaldean was then second to Paddington when attempting to make all in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. He is the sixth foal out of Whitsbury’s wonderful Suelita, a winning daughter of Dutch Art, and it is a family very much in form on the track and in the sales ring. Chaldean is a half-brother to Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes winner Alkumait, a son of Showcasing whose first foals sold in 2023. Alkumait’s fullsister Get Ahead was a Listed winner in 2023 and finished second in the Flying Five Stakes before making a cool 2,500,000gns at the Tattersalls December Mare Sale. She is the second millionaire Park Paddocks graduate among the siblings, as Suelita’s
Kingman filly made 1,000,000gns to Juddmonte as a foal in 2022.
Dragon Symbol 6 gr Cable Bay - Arcamist (Arcano), Whitsbury Manor Stud, £8,000, RPR 119 Dragon Symbol joins Whitsbury Manor Stud as the winner of five races, and so nearly six including a Group 1 as he kept on well to be first past the post in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot, only to lose the race in the stewards’ room for bumping Campanelle, who was promoted. The son of Cable Bay, a fine advertisement for Book 3 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale as a 67,000gns graduate, was unraced at two but showed a strong constitution to race 11 times from March to October at three for the Archie Watson yard. He won his first four starts before being denied by a nose in the Group 2 Sandy Lane Stakes, ahead of his unfortunate royal meeting run, and was then second again in a big-field Group 1 July Cup to Starman. Frustratingly, he was runnerup next time too, in the Group 2 King George Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, and was then third and fourth back at the highest level in the
Nunthorpe and Flying Five Stakes. The grey, also a winner at four and stakes-placed after being moved to Roger Varian’s yard, is out of a winning Arcano close relation to Listed winner Oasis Dancer. They are in turn out of the smart operator Good Enough, a daughter of Mukaddamah who was third in the Group 1 Prix Saint-Alary behind Zainta.
Dubai Mile 4 ch Roaring Lion - Beach Bunny (High Chaparral), Manton Park, £7,500, RPR 116 A Group 1-winning two-yearold from the sole crop of the brilliant Roaring Lion, Dubai Mile joins the young roster at Manton Park as an interesting prospect. The four-year-old was bred by Skymarc Farm and sold to Mark Johnston for €20,000 at the Goffs Orby Sale. Despite that relatively modest price tag, he is wellrelated, being a half-sibling to two stakes winners, including the dam of Australian Group 2 winner Surf Dancer, and out of a stakes winner in High Chaparral mare Beach Bunny. It is the further family of champion French two-yearold filly and Prix Marcel Boussac winner Miss Tahiti. Dubai Mile was a high-class Continues page 4

and consistent performer at two for Mark and Charlie Johnston, winning on his second start at Windsor and following up at Kempton by four lengths. He was subsequently only half a length away from winning the Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes, beaten in a tactical race by The Foxes, but more than made amends when showing tenacity to defeat Arrest in the Group 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud. He reappeared in the deepest of waters in the 2,000 Guineas, running well to be fifth to Chaldean, and was then pitched into the Derby over another four furlongs, finishing midfield behind Auguste Rodin. After picking up some more prize-money when fourth in the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes, injury struck and the Royal Ascot race proved his final start.

‘Triple Group 1 winner Hurricane Lane exemplifies the current commercial rejection of middle-distance and staying horses on the Flat, having been a rare private purchase by Coolmore from Godolphin to stand on their National Hunt roster’
El Caballo 5 b Havana Gold - Showstoppa (Showcasing), Culworth Grounds Farm, £6,000, RPR 115 Culworth Grounds Farm is one of the newer operations to the stud landscape and launches Sandy Lane Stakes winner El Caballo as an attractive proposition for commercial breeders. The second son of the late Tweenhills sire Havana Gold to retire to stud, he follows in the formidable footsteps of Havana Grey, Whitsbury’s sire sensation who will stand at £55,000 in 2024. El Caballo is available at a much less chunky £6,000 and there are plenty of reasons to believe he will prove popular. A graduate of the Tattersalls December Foal and Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sales, he won on his second start at two for Karl Burke in May 2021, having chased the future Molecomb Stakes winner and Middle Park Stakes third Armor home at Doncaster on his debut. El Caballo was not seen again until the December of his initial campaign, but he made up for lost time by duly winning not just that outing but his first four starts as a three-year-old too, a haul which included the Listed Spring Cup at Lingfield and culminated in Group 2 honours in the Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock, where he beat stakes winner and subsequent Commonwealth Cup runner-up Flaming Rib. El Caballo is a halfbrother to 2023 Lowther Stakes third Symbology, by Havana Grey, and Italian juvenile stakes winner Avengers Queen (Brazen Beau), while there is plenty of speed further down the page. The siblings’ Showcasing dam, Showstoppa, is a halfsister to Mill Reef Stakes winner Temple Meads.

4 b Kodiac - Zykina (Pivotal), Tally-Ho Stud, €17,500, RPR 119 Tally-Ho Stud brings a topflight winner by its long-time flagship sire Kodiac to breeders’ attention for the 2024 covering season. Good Guess has several qualities that make him an attractive proposition, including being a dual winner at two – his first two starts at Chantilly – and Group 3 Prix Djebel and Group 1 Prix Jean Prat winner at three. In the last-named contest at Deauville, he had subsequent Prix du Moulin winner Sauterne three lengths back in second, with previous topgrade winners Chaldean and
Meditate further behind. Good Guess, who was trained by Fabrice Chappet, brings an excellent Cheveley Park pedigree to the table too, being out of an unraced Pivotal daughter of the great Russian Rhythm, the multiple Group 1 heroine who netted the 1,000 Guineas, Coronation Stakes and Nassau at three, and the Lockinge Stakes against the boys at four. The 420,000gns Book 1 graduate is a half-sibling to four winners, including two black-type performers. One of them is Spangled, a winner of the Sceptre Stakes at Doncaster. Good Guess has been introduced to breeders at a fee
of €17,500 and, given his sire’s stallion sons have made such an excellent start and he is based at one of the most successful studs in the business, should turn plenty of heads.
Hurricane Lane 6 ch Frankel - Gale Force (Shirocco), Grange Stud, €6,000, RPR 125 One of the best sons of Frankel to stud, this triple Group 1 winner exemplifies the current commercial rejection of middle-distance and staying horses on the Flat, having been a rare private purchase by Coolmore from Godolphin to stand on their National Hunt roster. BLOODSTOCK SPECIAL NEW SIRES FOR 2024 Little Big Bear (right): the Group 1 winner is standing at Coolmore for €27,500
‘A dose of pure two-year-old brilliance from the Scat Daddy line and a Pattern-winning and Group 1-placed performer at three, Little Big Bear is the latest son of No Nay Never to join the Coolmore roster’ From page 4
Godolphin at Book 1 from breeder Philippa Cooper’s Normandie Stud, it is not hard to see where the strapping horse gets his stamina from as his dam, the Shirocco mare Gale Force, won a French Listed race over nearly two miles. Gale Force is a half-sister to Seal Of Approval, a winner of the British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes, while it is the further excellent family of dual Derby hero Harzand and fellow top-class middledistance performer Emily Upjohn. The Charlie Appleby-trained Hurricane Lane was a twolength winner on his sole start
at two, in a Newmarket novice event that October, while his first two wins of the following season included a gritty score in the Group 2 Dante Stakes, in which his opposition included the warm order High Definition. He lost both shoes when third to stablemate Adayar in the Derby, but bounced back to deny Lone Eagle by a neck in the Irish equivalent, the pair finishing a full seven lengths clear of the third His second success at the highest level was far more emphatic as the following month he beat Wordsworth by six lengths in the Grand Prix de Paris. Hurricane Lane added a
second Classic victory to his name in the St Leger and then produced a joint careerbest Racing Post Rating when third to Torquator Tasso in the Arc. He managed just five starts in total at four and five, but still added another Group 2 score to his CV in the Jockey Club Stakes by an easy six lengths and retires as a hugely exciting prospect for jumps breeders. It is, however, to be hoped he will receive some Flat-bred mares too.
Kenway 7 ch Galiway - Kendam (Kendargent), Coolagown Stud, €3,000, RPR 108 The success of Galiway has
spread outside the confines of his homeland and Kenway is welcomed as the first son of Haras de Colleville’s Group 1 sire to stand in Ireland, in a partnership with the Chehboub family. Bred by Guy Pariente and a €56,000 Arqana August Sale graduate, Kenway ran 38 times, with his highlight for the Frederic Rossi stable coming with a victory at two in the Group 3 Prix la Rochette at Longchamp. That day he beat the subsequent Prix de l’Abbaye winner Wooded, while he added three more black-type wins to his CV as an older horse. Kenway is bred on the highly
successful GaliwayKendargent nick, one that has produced Group 1-winning brothers Sealiway and Sunway, the latter winner of the Criterium International at Saint-Cloud in October. He is out of the smart Kendam, winner of the Group 3 Prix Eclipse at two and a half-length third in the Group 1 Prix de la Foret the following year. Kendam is a sister to twoyear-old stakes winner Kenfreeze and out of the Indian Rocket mare Damdam Freeze, a half-sister to Listed winner and Prix Robert Papin fourth Grand Reporter.
Little Big Bear 4 b No Nay Never - Adventure Seeker (Bering), Coolmore Stud, €27,500, RPR 121 A dose of pure two-year-old brilliance from the Scat Daddy line and a Pattern-winning and Group 1-placed performer at three, Little Big Bear is the latest son of No Nay Never to join the Coolmore roster. The €320,000 Arqana August Yearling Sale graduate lived up to his billing with four straight successes following defeat by a short head on his debut at the Curragh in April 2022. He powered three lengths clear at Naas, a performance that saw him sent off favourite for the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot. He duly obliged and followed up in the Group 3 Anglesey Stakes by nearly five lengths. Then came his tour de force in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes back at the Curragh, where he crushed his rivals by seven
lengths and up. Among his victims were runner-up Persian Force, the July Stakes winner and subsequent Prix Morny second, and fourth home Bradsell, winner of the Coventry Stakes and last year winner of the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot. The Aidan O’Brien-trained Little Big Bear was sent off 5-1 third-favourite for the 2,000 Guineas on his reappearance last year, but he pulled hard and finished lame in the soft ground and was promptly dropped back to six furlongs. He returned to winning ways in the Group 2 Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock, comfortably beating the Group 1-placed performer Shouldvebeenaring and Bradsell, but could not justify odds-on status in the Commonwealth Cup, though ran well to be second to Shaquille. No Nay Never is a renowned source of speed, but Little Big Bear’s pedigree on his distaff side has a blend of stamina too. His Pivotal half-brother, American Graffiti, was a winner over a mile and a quarter, while his Bering dam was a stakes winner over the same trip. She just happens to be a granddaughter of Arc winner All Along to boot.
Mac Swiney 6 ch New Approach - Halla Na Saoire (Teofilo), Irish National Stud, €8,000, RPR 118 Jim Bolger homebred Mac Swiney heads to the Irish National Stud as a fascinating recruit due to his race record and pedigree, being inbred 2x3

to the late Galileo. The son of New Approach was a top-class performer as a winner of the Group 1 Futurity Trophy at Doncaster and Group 2 Futurity Stakes at the Curragh at two, He started off in a Derby Trial at three but was then dropped back to a mile and short-headed stablemate Poetic Flare in a memorable Irish 2,000 Guineas for the Bolger yard. The runner-up had landed the Newmarket Classic a few weeks before, and it was a high-class renewal at the Curragh as Group 1-winning juveniles Van Gogh and Lucky Vega were among the vanquished. The chestnut was fourth and sixth in the Derby and Irish Derby on his only two cracks at a mile and a half, and was later third behind Sealiway in the Champion Stakes that year, with top-class performers Mishriff, Adayar and Addeybb all in behind. Mac Swiney hails from a typically fine Bolger family, being the fourth foal out of the unraced Teofilo mare Halla Na Saoire, a sister to Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial winner and Irish Derby third Light Heavy. The mare is also a half-sister to Halla Siamsa, the dam of Dewhurst winner Parish Hall
and Futurity Stakes third Hall Of Fame.
Marie’s Diamond 8 bb Footstepsinthesand Sindiyma (Kalanisi), Diamond Stud Bellewstown, €6,000, RPR 115 Marie’s Diamond retires to stud as a tough and well-bred son of Footstepsinthesand with Group-winning and Group 1-placed form. His 65-race career featured a strike in the Group 3 Anglesey Stakes at two, as well as placings in the Railway and Richmond Stakes and a fourth in the Middle Park Stakes. Initially owned by Middleham Park Racing and trained by Mark Johnston, Marie’s Diamond progressed to win at Listed level at both three and four, and finish an excellent third to Circus Maximus in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot. He also placed third behind the top-class Space Blues in the Surrey Stakes at Epsom and finished fourth in the German 2,000 Guineas. The Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale graduate hails from a top-class Aga Khan family, being out of the winning Kalanisi mare Sindiyma, a €315,000 purchase by Ballylinch Stud from the Goffs November Breeding Stock Sale.
She is out of the winning Pharly mare Sinndiya, a halfsister to dual Derby and Arc hero Sinndar, as well as Simawa, the dam of outstanding hurdler and Haras du Hoguenet’s first-season sire Jigme.
Midnight Sands 8 ch Speightstown - It’s Midnight (Shamardal), Norton Grove Stud, £2,500, RPR 111 Norton Grove Stud welcomes a son of the late, great Speightstown to its roster for 2024 in UAE Group 3 winner Midnight Sands. The Niarchos-bred chestnut raced three times in Britain at two, including a midfield finish in the Coventry Stakes, before transferring to Doug Watson and promptly winning five of his first six starts at Meydan. After a spell stateside, he returned to Watson and immediately regained the winning thread in the Burj Nahaar, by two and a quarter lengths under Pat Dobbs. Midnight Sands is a halfbrother to Gulfstream Park Grade 3 winner Tusk, out of the stakes-winning Shamardal mare It’s Midnight, a half-sister to Prix Jacques le Marois second Holocene and blacktype performer and producer Solar Midnight. The trio are out of the
winning Witching Hour, a Fairy King half-sister to dual Listed winner Kathmandu.
Modern Games 5 ch Dubawi - Modern Ideals (New Approach), Dalham Hall Stud, £30,000, RPR 124 Modern Games was one of those performers you could always rely on and the blueblooded colt retires to Dalham Hall as a standout new sire for 2024. He is the sixth son of Darley’s titan stallion and 2022 champion sire Dubawi on the European roster and must have every chance of being a success in his second career. He was a top-level winner from two to four, starting with the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Del Mar at the end of a busy two-year-old campaign which also included a victory in the Group 3 Tattersalls Stakes. He made it back-to-back top-flight successes by winning the Poule d’Essai des Poulains on his reappearance at three for Charlie Applebly and Godolphin. Modern Games was subsequently third to Vadeni in the Prix du Jockey Club and second to Baaeed in the Sussex Stakes, before striking in the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile. BLOODSTOCK SPECIAL NEW SIRES FOR 2024
‘Paddington proved almost as popular as his loveable, marmalade-eating namesake with a blockbuster 2023, including four wins at the highest level in an ambitious campaign’ From page 7
Boy in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, he returned to North America to plunder another Grade 1, this time the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Keeneland. The Kentucky track was also the stage of his reappearance last year, when second to Chez Pierre in the Maker’s Mark Mile, an effort he followed by winning the Lockinge Stakes much closer to home. Ultimately, he won half of his 16 starts, for prize-money of more than £2,780,000 The chestnut has a wonderful pedigree, being a half-brother to 2023 1,000 Guineas heroine and close Breeders’ Cup Mile second Mawj, also a winner of the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge
Cup, and stakes winner Modern News. The trio are out of the remarkable New Approach mare Modern Ideals, who was no great shakes on the track but a half-sister to Ultra, winner of the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere, and to another Pattern winner in Prix Minerve scorer Synopsis.
Mojo Star 6 b Sea The Stars - Galley (Zamindar), Whytemount Stud, €3,000, RPR 119 A high-class performer who went close to Group 1 glory on three occasions, including when beaten just half a length into second by Kyprios in last year’s Gold Cup, Mojo Star rates a particularly attractive proposition to National Hunt breeders.
He is by Sea The Stars, whose sire sons Harzand and Affinisea have got off to a good start with their first batches of jumps performers, and from a prolific Juddmonte family that includes Arc hero Rail Link. A six-figure graduate from the Tattersalls December Foal and Book 1 Sales, Mojo Star was a nose second to subsequent Group 1 winner Scope on his only start at two for the Richard Hannon yard. He was second again at Newbury in a maiden on his return, before a huge run to be second to Adayar at 50-1 in the Derby, finishing in front of the likes of Hurricane Lane, Bolshoi Ballet and Mac Swiney. After finishing fifth in the Irish Derby, he shed his maiden tag when winning by four lengths at Newbury.

Pitched back into the Classic fray, he was then a good second to Hurricane Lane in the St Leger. His first appearance of 2023 saw him run another blinder, going down narrowly to Kyprios at Royal Ascot upped to the marathon distance of two and a half miles. The six-year-old is a close relation to Italian stakes winner Cape Magic and a halfsibling to another black-type scorer in Portage. They are out of the Zamindar mare Galley, a halfsister to July Stakes winner and Lockinge Stakes second Wharf, and to Colza, the dam of Criterium de Saint-Cloud winner and National Hunt sire Linda’s Lad.
Mostahdaf 6 br Frankel - Handassa (Dubawi), Beech House Stud, £15,000, RPR 128 Another new recruit to the stallion ranks who holds stacks of appeal is Mostahdaf, a dual Group 1 winner by reigning champion sire Frankel and a half-brother to a dual Group 1-winning miler in Nazeef. The Shadwell homebred did not race at two but made an immediate impression at Newcastle in March of his three-year-old campaign when pulling clear to win by four and a half lengths on his debut. He won his next two starts, including the Listed Heron Stakes at Sandown, but was then badly impeded two furlongs out just as he was getting into contention in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. He made amends back at Sandown in the Listed Fortune Stakes, and wound up the season by winning the Group 3 Darley Stakes at Newmarket. He readily won the Gordon Richards and September Stakes the following year – both Group 3s – but really came into his own aged five last year. Mostahdaf started off with an impressive seven-length victory in the valuable Neom Turf Cup at the Saudi Cup meeting, and was then far from disgraced in fourth behind Equinox, over a trip that always seemed to stretch him, in the Sheema Classic at Meydan. He returned after a break to trounce a top-class field in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes, defeating Group 1 winners Luxembourg, Adayar and Bay
Bridge by upwards of four lengths. The good-looker trained by the Gosdens backed that up with a front-running success in the Juddmonte International under Frankie Dettori, repelling top-class duo Nashwa and Paddington. Based at the newly refurbished and historic Beech House Stud, he starts out at what appears to be excellent value at £15,000, given his race record and pedigree. His Dubawi dam Handassa was a Listed winner over a mile and is a half-sister to Santa Anita Grade 2 scorer Desert Stone. The duo are out of Starstone, a daughter of brilliant broodmare Star and half-sister to top-class sprinters in July Cup winner Pastoral Pursuits and Sprint Cup victor Goodricke.
Mutasaabeq 6 br Invincible Spirit Ghanaati (Giant’s Causeway), National Stud, £6,500, RPR 119 The National Stud welcomes Mutasaabeq, a high-class miler by sire of sires Invincible Spirit and from one of the finest Shadwell families, to its diverse and young roster for 2024. The six-year-old was a triple Group 2 winner for Charlie Hills, including back-to-back runnings of the Joel Stakes on his beloved Rowley Mile. The son of 1,000 Guineas and Coronation Stakes winner Ghanaati was a debut winner as a juvenile at the track, and reappeared to win a conditions event there the following spring. In addition to his three Group wins, Mutasaabeq finished a head second to Chindit in the Summer Mile and a neck runner-up to Lights On in the bet365 Mile. He retires with seven victories in all and three placings from 17 starts, having raced from two to five. Mutasaabeq has another strong string to his bow in the form of his fantastic pedigree. His dam is a Giant’s Causeway half-sister to Cumberland Lodge Stakes winner and Champion Stakes second Mawatheeq and to stakes scorer and Oaks third Rumoush, also a proven black-type producer. They are out of Sarayir, a Mr Prospector daughter of blue hen and foundation mare Height Of Fashion. Sarayir is a half-sister to the great champion Nashwan and top-
class pair Unfuwain and Nayef. It is a formidable family that also includes the mighty Baaeed, Hukum, Aghareed and Lahudood.
Native Trail 5 b Oasis Dream - Needleleaf (Observatory), Kildangan Stud, €17,500, RPR 123 As an unbeaten champion two-year-old who went on to Classic glory, Native Trail is an exciting recruit to the stallion ranks at Kildangan Stud, whose roster already includes 2023 champion first-season sire Blue Point and topnotchers Night Of Thunder and Teofilo. Native Trail hails from a typically formidable Juddmonte family. His dam, the unraced Observatory mare Needleleaf, is a sister to Sprint Cup winner African Rose, dam of Frankel’s first Group winner Fair Eva, and to juvenile Group winner and Prix Marcel Boussac second Helleborine, dam of Coventry Stakes victor and leading 2023 first-season sire Calyx and Listed winner Coppice. It is the excellent family of Dewhurst Stakes winner Distant Music. Native Trail, a graduate of Arqana’s December Sale and Tattersalls Book 1, was a sixfigure purchase when selling to Godolphin for 210,000gns at the Tattersalls Craven BreezeUp in 2021. He demonstrated his talent from the off for the Charlie Appleby yard, winning on his debut as a two-year-old at Sandown by four lengths – beating the high-class Royal Patronage in the process – before taking the Group 2 Superlative Stakes at Newmarket. His last two starts that term came at the highest level and he passed those tests with aplomb, winning the National Stakes at the Curragh by three and a half lengths and then the Dewhurst at Newmarket by two lengths. He went on to win the Craven Stakes on his debut the following spring by a comfortable margin and started hot favourite for the 2,000 Guineas. He ran well but found stablemate Coroebus too good and was runner-up to the tune of three-quarters of a length. Classic glory was his a month later, however, as he again showed his liking for the Curragh by winning the Irish 2,000 Guineas.

Upped to a ten-furlong trip which stretched him, he then battled well to be beaten just half a length in third behind Prix du Jockey Club hero Vadeni in the Coral-Eclipse. After a couple of runs last year at four, he was retired as the winner of six of his 11 races and with more than £1 million in earnings. A physically impressive individual, it will be fascinating to follow Native Trail’s next chapter.
Oriental Eagle 10 br Campanologist - Oriental Pearl (Big Shuffle), Meelin Stud, €1,000, RPR 110 Oriental Eagle stands out on several fronts, being both the oldest and most inexpensive new sire of 2024, a high-class performer on the track and son of multiple German and Italian Group 1 winner Campanologist, Oriental Eagle won two Group races in Germany for the Jens Hirschberger stable, the Group 3 Deutsches St Leger in 2017 and the Group 2 Gerling-Preis the following spring. He went on to win a Listed event at Limerick for Emmet Mullins after being purchased by BBA Ireland from the Arqana Arc Sale in 2019. Unfortunately, Oriental Eagle then spent the best part of three years on the sidelines,

He joins an enterprising outfit in Meelin Stud, whose roster also features July Stakes winner and proven sire Alhebayeb and the winning Zebadiah. Oriental Eagle is out of German stakes winner Oriental Pearl, making him a half-brother to winners including the durable Prix Kergorlay second Oriental Fox and stakes winner Oriental Magic, the dam of last year’s Prix de Royallieu winner Sea Silk Road.
Paddington 4 b Siyouni - Modern Eagle (Montjeu), Coolmore Stud, €55,000, RPR 127 Paddington proved almost as popular as his loveable, marmalade-eating namesake with a blockbuster 2023, including four wins at the highest level in an ambitious campaign. A €420,000 Arqana October Yearling Sale graduate, the son of Siyouni first caught the eye when a five-length winner of a Curragh maiden on his second start at two, his debut having come at Ascot the previous month. At three, the Coolmoreowned and Ballydoyle-trained colt went the old-fashioned Continues page 10

BLOODSTOCK SPECIAL NEW SIRES FOR 2024 From page 9
handicap to black-type route when landing the Madrid Handicap with authority before another commanding score in the Listed Tetrarch Stakes. Stepped up to Classic level on his next outing back at the Curragh, he won the Irish 2,000 Guineas by two lengths from stablemate Cairo, with Newmarket Classic runner-up Hi Royal back in third. Padington’s suitcase was then packed for another trip to Berkshire, and this was a more fruitful one as he beat fellow Guineas winner Chaldean by three and three-quarter lengths in the St James’s Palace Stakes. Two and a half weeks later, and beginning to earn comparison with the ‘Iron Horse’ Giant’s Causeway, Paddington was stepped up in trip and faced his elders for the first time in the Coral-Eclipse, but it didn’t halt his charge as he beat Emily Upjohn by half a length. Next up was a sloppy Sussex Stakes at a far from glorious Goodwood, but the soft ground proved no barrier to a fourth Group 1 victory on the spin as our hero scored by a length and a half from Facteur Cheval. Paddington was odds-on to make it five in the Juddmonte
International, but a combination of distance and a hectic schedule were highly likely factors in the juggernaut coming off the tracks as he finished third behind Mostahdaf, though not beaten far. Paddington is by the influential Siyouni and from a top-class Wildenstein family. His dam, the Monteju mare Modern Eagle, is out of Prix de Diane runner-up Millionaia and is therefore a granddaughter of Prix SaintAlary winner Moonlight Dance. His fourth dam is the unbeaten Prix de Diane, SaintAlary and Poule d’Essai des Pouliches heroine Madelia.
Pyledriver 7 b Harbour Watch - La Pyle (Le Havre), The Beeches Stud, €4,000, RPR 125 Pyledriver was a genuine ragsto-riches tale after being a vendor buy-back for 10,000gns at Tattersalls as a foal who went on to win more than £2 million in prize-money on the track and two Group 1s. National Hunt breeders now have an opportunity to tap into this top-
class middle-distance performer, who won blacktype races from two to six as he became one of the most popular racehorses of the last few years. The son of Harbour Watch won on his debut for William Muir at Salisbury as a juvenile in July 2019 and graduated to Listed success on his third start in the Ascendant Stakes at Haydock. The following year, Covid-19 brought great disruption to the racing calendar but failed to stop the strongly built bay adding the Group 2 King Edward VII and Great Voltigeur Stakes to his CV, while he was also third in the St Leger, beaten just a neck and a length behind Galileo Chrome. He returned as good as ever at four, building on his Jockey Club Stakes reappearance second with a neck victory over Al Aasy in the Group 1 Coronation Cup at Epsom, the pair seven lengths-plus clear of Group/ Grade 1 winners Japan, Highland Chief and Mogul. Injury prevented a summer campaign but Pyledriver (left) shrugged that off
with a Listed score in the Churchill Stakes at Lingfield, which was followed by a second in the Hong Kong Vase. He was on his travels again early in his five-year-old campaign, running in Saudi Arabia and the UAE, before finishing runner-up to Hukum in defence of his Coronation Cup crown. Next came his careerdefining win in the King George at Ascot, where he defeated a stellar field comprising the previous season’s Arc winner Torquator Tasso, top-class globetrotter and Prix du Jockey Club hero Mishriff, Grand Prix de SaintCloud victor Broome, Irish Derby hero Westover and Emily Upjohn, subsequently a dual Group 1 winner. Last year, Pyledriver won the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot on his seasonal return, the last of eight career victories for his plucky connections. The seven-year-old is out of the Le Havre mare La Pyle, a dual winner on the Flat in France, placed over hurdles for Philip Hobbs, and dam of other winners Shagpyle, Stockpyle and Country Pyle. The mare is a half-sister to Grand Prix de Paris winner Mont Ormel (renamed Helene Charisma after being sold to Hong Kong).
Shaquille 4 b Charm Spirit - Magic (Galileo), Dullingham Park, £15,000, RPR 123 Shaquille, a physically imposing individual with an electric turn of foot that propelled him to victory in two Group 1s as well as the Cartier Sprinter of the Year award, is an immensely exciting new prospect for Dullingham Park. The son of Charm Spirit was thrilling to watch, with his wins in the Commonwealth and July Cups coming despite slow starts from the stalls. His talent was evident as a juvenile, when he won three of his four starts. He was off the mark on his debut at York and later landed a novice event there, while also showing versatility by scoring on the all-weather at Wolverhampton. The Julie Camacho-trained Shqauille returned at three with an easy victory in a Newmarket handicap last May before trouncing a classy field in the Listed Carnarvon Stakes at Newbury. He subsequently graduated to Group 1 honours when defeating Little Big Bear in an exciting Commonwealth Cup, displaying an impressive turn of foot to come from the rear and win by a length and a quarter. He again reared at the start and was slowly away in the
July Cup, but despite pulling hard and hitting the front just after halfway kept on well to defeat another top-quality field that included Kinross, Art Power, Khaadem and Little Big Bear. Shaquille hails from a highclass family too, being out of an unraced Galileo sister to stakes winner Birch Grove, that pair out of Danehurst, Cheveley Park Stud’s winner of the Flying Five Stakes and second in the Golden Jubilee Stakes. Danehurst is a half-sister to Prix Penelope winner Humouresque and Hardwicke Stakes third Mighty, both by the great Pivotal.
Subjectivist 7 b Teofilo - Reckoning (Danehill Dancer), Alne Park Stud, £4,000, RPR 122 British National Hunt breeders have had an influx of top-class horses either standing or moved on to jumps rosters around the nation, and Gold Cup hero Subjectivist joins a list that includes Golden Horn, Jack Hobbs, Logician and Postponed. Standing at the Skeltons’ Alne Park Stud, the son of Teofilo will serve alongside the proven pair Dink and Ocovango plus the younger recruit Midnights Legacy, Subjectivist was a typically

canny purchase by Mark Johnston at 62,000gns from New England Stud at Book 2. He was busy at two for the trainer, with his seven starts including a seven-length novice score at Chelmsford and a Listed second in the Stonehenge Stakes at Salisbury. He was third to Hukum in the King George V Handicap at Royal Ascot upon his return to action the following June and two runs later picked up a first black-type success in the Listed Glasgow Stakes at Hamilton. Other highlights that year came in the shape of a 15-length demolition of his rivals in the Group 3 March Stakes and then a first Group 1 success in the Prix Royal-Oak. He returned to action at four in the Group 2 Dubai Gold Cup at Meydan, which he won by five and three-quarter lengths, and then came his career highlight in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot. Five lengths was the winning distance this time over Princess Zoe, with Stradivarius, Santiago and Serpentine among those in behind. Injury struck, however, and the licence had changed from Mark to son Charlie by the time we next saw Subjectivist in February last year. He naturally stripped fitter for that first run back in Saudi Arabia, and subsequently ran decent thirds in the Dubai Gold Cup and Gold Cup, before connections finally called time on his career. Subjectivist is out of the stakes-placed Danehill Dancer mare Reckoning and is closely related to Sir Ron Priestley, a dual Group 2 winner who was second in the 2019 St Leger. The pair are also half-siblings to Rockfel Stakes third Alba Rose.
The Antarctic 4 gr Dark Angel - Anna Law (Lawman), Castle Hyde Stud, €6,000, RPR 111 The Antarctic was a high-class sprinter for Aidan O’Brien and Coolmore, and the fact he is a brother to Battaash only adds to his interest as a new sire of 2024. He was bred by Ballyphilip Stud and sold to MV Magnier for 750,000gns at Book 1. The Antarctic was quick out of the blocks when it came to his racing career. Debuting in the April of his juvenile season, he won his first two starts at Tipperary and Naas. After finishing seventh in the Norfolk Stakes, he earned his initial black type when a neck third in the Listed Tipperary Stakes, before the first battle with stablemate Blackbeard ended with him finishing second to that rival in the Prix Robert Papin at Chantilly. Sent back to France for the Group 3 Prix de Cabourg at Deauville, The Antarctic scored a first black-type win. Then came two placed efforts behind Blackbeard in top

Shaquille hails from a high-class family and will be standing for £15,000
‘A physically imposing individual with an electric turn of foot, Shaquille is an immensely exciting new prospect for Dullingham Park’ company, beaten two lengths in both the Prix Morny and Middle Park Stakes. The Antarctic was not as busy at three last year, but he did bag another Group 3 triumph, this time in the Lacken Stakes at Naas. The son of Dark Angel is out of the Lawman mare Anna Law, a half-sister to the dam of high-class sprinter and Group 1 sire Tasleet. His own brother Bataaash was, of course, a champion sprinter whose 13 wins featured two Nunthorpes, the King’s Stand Stakes, the Prix de l’Abbaye and a record four King George Stakes.
Triple Time 5 b Frankel - Reem Three (Mark Of Esteem), Dalham Hall Stud, £10,000, RPR 123 Triple Time, who was always held in the highest regard by trainer Kevin Ryan, retires to Dalham Hall Stud as a Group 1-winning miler by Frankel from a red-hot family. The Sheikh Mohammed Obaid homebred was a nineand-a-half length winner on his third start at two at Haydock, and concluded that season with a Listed strike in the Ascendant Stakes at the same track. After missing the 2,000 Guineas due to injury, he belatedly returned to win the Group 3 Superior Mile Stakes at Haydock, exactly a year on from winning the Listed event on the same card. Very soft ground confronted Triple Time on his next start in the Prix Daniel Wildenstein at Longchamp, and while he kept
on, he could manage only seventh behind fellow new sire of 2024 Erevann. His career highlight came on his seasonal reappearance at four, when getting the better of Inspiral in a thrilling tussle in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot last summer. Also behind him that day were other top-level winners Modern Games, Angel Bleu and Native Trail. Triple Time’s pedigree is the other big factor in his appeal as a stallion. Not only is he by the reigning British and Irish champion sire, he is the ninth foal out of Reem Three, a winning and stakes-placed daughter of Mark Of Esteem. Reem Three is a half-sister to Celebration Mile winner and the top-level-placed Afsare, and the 21-year-old has excelled at paddocks. Aside from Triple Time, she is also responsible for stakes winners in Ajman Princess, who took the Group 1 Prix Jean Romanet, Cape Byron and Ostilio. Her other stakes winners include Third Realm and Captain Winters, while her unraced New Approach daughter Rosaline has foaled 2023 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere winner Rosallion, by Blue Point. And in what amounts to further proof that the family clicks well with Frankel, another daughter, Prix SaintAlary third Imperial Charm, produced a son, Imperial Sovereign, who won well on his debut at Newcastle last month for Karl Burke and Sheikh Obaid. BLOODSTOCK SPECIAL NEW SIRES FOR 2024 Kitty Trice gets the inside track from Sophie Buckley at Culworth Grounds
‘El Caballo is a small breeders’ horse so they J will likely book in as they go along, like I used to do. It’s not like getting into Frankel or Too Darn Hot’
Sophie Buckley is aiming to break new ground with El Caballo
OINING the British stallion market at a time of economic difficulties might be a nerveracking prospect for most, but Sophie Buckley is hopeful El Caballo can add something different in an increasingly polarised field. The Group 2 Sandy Lane Stakes winner holds at least one trump card in his arsenal as he is by the late Havana Gold, the same sire as Whitsbury Manor Stud’s sensational young gun Havana Grey. El Caballo was also a talented performer for trainer Karl Burke, with his six wins – from just ten starts – including a second black-type score in Lingfield’s Listed Spring Cup Stakes and a strike in the valuable 3 Year Old All-Weather Championships Conditions Stakes at Newcastle. The arrangement to stand El Caballo was far from a last-minute decision for the Culworth Grounds Farm principal. Rather, this was a plan that had been several years in the pipeline for the Banbury-based operation, a leading consignor at the major sales in a variety of sectors. Buckley, who formerly worked with Hubie de Burgh and Angus Gold at Shadwell, and as marketing executive at Darley, says: “I’ve had it in my mind for a long time that it would be something I’d like to do. I’d looked into different ways of going about it but I put it to one side and then somebody called me and asked if I’d ever thought of standing a stallion. I said I had quite a lot, and they said the horse was available.” The British stallion market can feel rather overshadowed by six-figure giants such as Frankel, Dubawi and Kingman, and there is a wide amount of choice in the five-figure bracket too. El Caballo’s opening fee has been set at £6,000, and Buckley feels there is a gap to exploit. “I think he’s right for the market at this time in the UK,” she says. “I’d started off myself as a smaller breeder and I felt there were not a lot of horses at that level, whereas there’s a bigger choice in Ireland. “There are a number of stallions standing at £12,000 to £15,000 and, once you put the cost on top of that, it’s a lot of money on the end of your leadrope as a foal or yearling to get back. I just feel there is room for a stallion for smaller breeders here to use.” The deal to stand El Caballo took a while to be completed, but it has proved well worth the wait for Culworth Grounds, with the five-yearold settling into stud life with aplomb. Buckley says: “It rumbled on for a long time and we didn’t get him until November, so it was a little tight in terms of his arrival. “He’s settled in very well and seems very easy – he’s been getting used to his new life, getting out in the

paddock every day.” To boost El Caballo’s chances, the five-year-old has been syndicated to three bloodstock agents, all of whom will support him when his progeny start arriving at the sales. “There are three young agents who are partners in the horse, as I wanted to make sure he was well supported at the other end and they’d all buy foals, yearlings and breezers,” explains Buckley. “It’s good to have young agents involved who will hopefully support him out the other end.” The bay has arrived at an opportune time given the sad death of his sire and the significant fee upgrade of his paternal half-brother, now a £55,000 stallion at Whitsbury Manor Stud. Buckley says: “The timing was good for people who wanted to use Havana Grey and Havana Gold for that matter. “Havana Gold was a great smaller breeders’ sire in the end, and you could send a mare to him and get your mare off the mark. Havana Grey has gone up in price and is therefore out of a lot of people’s range.” El Caballo, a product of Whitsbury Manor Stud himself, being out of a winning Showcasing half-sister to Mill Reef Stakes winner Temple Meads, also has an appealing distaff side to recommend him to breeders. He is a half-brother to 2023 Lowther Stakes third Symbology and Italian Listed winner Avengers Queen, as well as the well-regarded Katey Kontent, and from a speedy and classy family down the line. “The mare, Showstoppa, has produced two other black-type horses and there’s plenty of depth to El Caballo’s pedigree,” says Buckley. “He’s been bred by a brilliant breeder in Whitsbury and there’s plenty of speed and black type under every dam. “At the end of the day, they don’t always throw back to the sire or dam, it could be their uncle or aunt. He’s also a very attractive horse with good size, not too big or small, and with a nice amount of bone, so he should suit every mare.” The Tattersalls December Foal Sale and Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale graduate has gone down well with visitors, and there will shortly be a further opportunity to see him at the Tattersalls February Sale. Buckley says: “He’s been received very well and most of the breeding rights are sold – there’s a couple more still available – and the nominations have started to be booked in. “He’s going to the February Sale, so I’m hoping that will go well. He’s a small breeders’ horse so they will likely book in as they go along, like I used to do. It’s not like getting into Frankel or Too Darn Hot. “People who have seen him in real life are impressed by him and the feedback I’ve got off them is that he’s very nice.” Buckley is a pragmatist and aware of the internal and external challenges facing the racing and breeding industries in Britain, but is optimistic that her new recruit can produce the goods in a results-driven industry. “I’m not unrealistic but I hope this will be a success,” she says. “At the end of the day, they’ve got to get the mares and they’ve got to produce the horses. I can help get him the mares but he’s got to produce fast racehorses. Ultimately, I hope he will be a success.”

ACE IMPACT emerged as joint-second best horse in the world in the last Longines rankings behind only the invincible Equinox and ties with Mosdahdaf as the champion of Europe. His fee, of €40,000 at the Chehboub family’s burgeoning new venture Haras de Beaumont, is a record opening price for a French-based stallion. However, the manner in which the son of Cracksman completed a rare Prix du Jockey Club – Arc de Triomphe double will live long in the memory and he is sure to be the pick of some heavy-hitting breeders. The Aga Khan’s Haras de Bonneval is in the unusual position of unveiling two new names to a roster of established talent headed by Siyouni. Both are from old families developed by the operation with Churchill’s son Vadeni (€18,000) from a Jean-Luc Lagardere line and a winner of the Jockey Club and the Eclipse in 2022. Erevann (€8,000) descends from the stock purchased from Marcel Boussac and the Dubawi-sired miler proved a high-quality performer, winning the Group 2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein and beaten two necks behind Inspiral in the Group 1 Prix Jacques le Marois. Onesto, meanwhile, who is new to Haras d’Etreham at €12,500, has an immaculate Juddmonte bloodline, being a son of Frankel whose granddam was a half-sister of the late Khalid Abdullah’s blue hen Hasili. When trained by Fabrice Chappet, he took the 2022 Prix de la Foret and had very credible placings in the Irish Champion Stakes and the Arc. Nurlan Bizakov’s Sumbe is bursting with different names to conjure with. Mishriff, Prince Faisal’s Jockey Club winner and Gulf moneyspinner, starts back from the beginning at €17,500 after missing one breeding season with a setback. He is joined by Angel Bleu (€9,000), the son of Dark Angel
who was a hard-knocking Group 1 operator at seven furlongs and a mile, as well as homebred Lagardere winner Belbek (€7,000). The Devin family at Haras du Mesnil were thrilled to complete a deal with ownerbreeder James Wigan for Bay Bridge, the son of New Bay who carried his colours in landing the Champion Stakes at Ascot. He seems to have been priced quite reasonably at €6,000. That same fee will also get a mare a visit to Lusail, the dual Group 2 winner by Mehmas and a St James’s Palace runnerup, who heads to his owner Al Shaqab’s Haras de Bouquetot. Leading the line among jump options is Jigme (€8,000), the young hurdling sensation snapped up by Haras du Hoguenet, while Haras de Cercy will be marketing the regally bred winning hurdler David Du Berlais (€3,500). Group 1-placed ten-furlong performer Pretty Tiger (Haras de la Tuilerie €4,000), speedy and ultra-consistent Marianafoot (Haras des Faunes, €2,200), Torquator Tasso’s Baden-Baden conqueror Mendocino (Haras du Lion, €3,800), solid stayers Bubble Gift (Haras Grand Courgeon, €3,500) and Rubis Vendome (Haras de la Haie Neuve, €3,000), as well as admirable sprinter Speak In Colours (Haras des Fontaines, €1,900) and Tyros Stakes winner Military Style (Haras du Tallis, €3,500) are new on the list as lower-budget options.

The 2007 Derby winner is a bona-fide star as a National Hunt sire, responsible for the likes of Grand National king Tiger Roll, Goshen, Echoes In Rain and I Am Maximus. It will not have been easy for Ger O’Neill and his team to prise the son of Montjeu from Turkey, where he was well regarded, but breeders are
likely to be fighting for attention to get mares into what will be carefully managed small books. The same stud also picked up the well-travelled Triple Threat (private), whose young National Hunt progeny in France have caught the eye. Jeu St Eloi (private) had started to get noticed last season when he began to have nice young bumper and jump horses in Britain and Ireland, and recently pinched the Grade 2 Coral Hurdle with Blueking D’Oroux. Haras de Cercy and, with French sires proving so popular, this relative of Balko who had a jumping career himself could be an intriguing outcross. Capri, the winner of the Irish Derby and St Leger, is still waiting for his first runners but he has now switched from Coolmore’s Grange Stud to Willow Wood Farm in Cheshire and has been priced at €2,500. It was only an interior move for Decorated Knight (€3,000), the triple Group 1 winner who had been covering at the Irish National Stud, but he will have more jump ammunition from Longford House Stud. The same County Tipperary farm has also taken Gold Cup and St Leger winner Leading Light (price on application) into the fold after two seasons
at Dunraven Stud in Wales, as well as the Queen’s precocious Recorder (poa) from Sumbe’s Haras de Montfort et Preaux. Another resident of the Irish National Stud, Free Eagle (private), Moyglare’s beautifully bred and Prince of Wales’s Stakes-winning son of High Chaparral, is off to Alastair Pim’s Anngrove Stud in County Laois. Postponed (£4,000), the elite son of Dubawi who raced all over the world with such credit for Roger Varian and Luca Cumani, is a big signing for Yorton Farm and British National Hunt breeding after starting his life at Dalham Hall. Meanwhile, Martyn Meade’s Prix Royal-Oak winner Technician (£5,000) is now in situ at the family’s Manton Park after two seasons with Haras de Montaigu.
Steve Parkin’s creation of Dullingham Park, near Newmarket, as a stallion station means that Soldier’s Call, who made a tidy start with his first crop in 2023, is bound there from Ballyhane at a fee of £8,500. Others from a purely Flat angle include Mayson (€4,250), who has won and sired a July Cup winner, and will continue his life as a value speed source outside Cheveley Park Stud in the surrounds of Oak Lodge Stud across the Irish Sea. News also came out that Nunthorpe-placed Mattmu (£2,000) is switching from Bearstone Stud to Norton Grove in Yorkshire, while fellow Group 2-winning sprinter Land Force (£2,500) moves from Highclere to Hedgeholme Stud, near Darlington.
