BLOODSTOCK SPECIAL NEW SIRES FOR 2020
Future looks bright with high-class new intake
T
HIS year’s list of new sires in Britain and Ireland might not be the longest we have ever seen but there is no shortage of quality on offer, whatever breeders are looking for. The recent announcement of the Longines Best Racehorse rankings in London had three names tied at the top and two of them are included in these pages – the admirable Prince of Wales’s Stakes winner Crystal Ocean and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe hero Waldgeist, whose joint owner-breeder Dietrich von Boetticher is the subject of Tom Peacock’s feature interview (page 12). There are plenty of other champions starting out at stud in Britain and Ireland as well, not least the outstanding juvenile Too Darn Hot, new to Dalham Hall. Classic heroes Masar, Magna Grecia, Phoenix Of Spain and Study Of Man are among the blue-chip arrivals for 2020, while top-quality sprinters Blue Point, Ten Sovereigns and Advertise are sure to receive plenty of inquiries. Next generation blood is also a theme, with the progeny of increasingly popular stallions Kingman, Siyouni, Lope De Vega and No Nay Never all included along with many others from the established order. National Hunt breeders are given a wide variety of fresh options too, with Capri and Flag Of Honour joining Crystal Ocean in the dual-purpose ranks. From a healthy outlay to a bargain cover and with every distance catered for, the new boys will certainly give mare owners plenty of food for thought as they consider their options.
Fresh talent joining the stallion rosters in Britain and Ireland Advertise
Age: 4; colour: bay; pedigree: Showcasing-Furbelow (Pivotal) Standing at the National Stud; price: £25,000 Racing Post Rating high of 121 Now the highest-rated of Showcasing’s sons to retire to the breeding shed, he actually has more to recommend him from his racecourse performance than even his exalted father, who remains ever popular at a fee of £55,000 after widespread success at Whitsbury Manor Stud. Advertise, who had the higher Racing Post Rating, has plenty in common with his grandsire Oasis Dream, the pair both boasting Group 1 wins aged two and three. Advertise is a poster boy for the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale, where he was picked up for £60,000, and he made the surest of starts to life with Martyn Meade in breaking his duck at the first attempt before finding only his fellow stallion newbie Calyx too much in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot. He barely put a foot wrong all season, flying up the grades first in the July Stakes at Newmarket and then with a game performance in the
Phoenix Stakes. His good second in the Dewhurst behind Too Darn Hot swept him to the position of fourth-highest-rated juvenile colt in Europe in 2018. Advertise still had to prove he was about more than just precocity and, while not looking his usual self when very disappointing in the 2,000 Guineas – his yard was under a cloud at the time – he showed he was back on song by clinching the Commonwealth Cup in a rapid time. Second to Ten Sovereigns in the July Cup, he added a third Group 1 by outpointing the ever-reliable Brando in the Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville and must be considered an exciting option at a competitive fee.
Barraquero
5 b Zebedee-Chica Whopa (Oasis Dream) Claremount Stud; €4,000 RPR 110 It is an enterprising decision by Sam Sangster and partners to stand Barraquero at Padraig and Paul Moroney’s Clare operation, making him one of the only Flat stallions active in the county. A grandson of Invincible Spirit, Barraquero’s sire
Zebedee was not only sharp on the racecourse but has produced some speedy types including Magical Memory and Ivawood, who showed some potential from his first few seasons at Coolmore and has now moved to France. Barraquero, a purchase by Sangster at the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale, was an encouraging third behind the top-class Expert Eye on his debut and followed up with an impressive win at Chepstow for Brian Meehan in the famous green and blue family silks. A month later he landed the Group 2 Richmond Stakes at Glorious Goodwood. Unfortunately he was hindered by problems thereafter and managed only one more appearance on the track the following season. “It was a shame he didn’t get the chance to show his full potential on the track due to those injuries, but he’s such a good-looking horse
Barraquero: a “good-looking horse with a great temperament”
with a great temperament,” Sangster said recently. “A number of the owners have their own mares so they’ll be supporting him themselves. If Barraquero throws anything half as fast as himself he’ll have a good chance.” His dam, the Oasis Dream mare Chica Whopa, was a winner for the Richard Hannon stable, while there is further speed in the pedigree through her half-sister Jezebel, who collected a six-furlong juvenile Listed event in Italy for trainer Chris Wall.
Blue Point
6 b Shamardal-Scarlett Rose (Royal Applause) Kildangan Stud; €45,000 RPR 127 A handsome, brooding presence, Blue Point has the pedigree to boot as a son of sire-of-sires Shamardal and a half-brother to another Group winner in the shape of Railway Stakes scorer Formosina. Always held in the highest order at Charlie Appleby’s stable, he banked more
than £2.6 million in a career that encompassed four seasons at the highest level. Bought for 200,000gns at Book 1, Blue Point was ready to go by June of his two-year-old year, winning his first two starts and getting worried out of the Richmond Stakes at Goodwood only by the more streetwise Mehmas. He was to take the Gimcrack in fine style and achieve championship placings in both the Middle Park and Dewhurst Stakes before the season was out. The 2017 season saw Blue Point mixing it with some outstanding three-year-old sprinters, getting the better of Harry Angel in a captivating pipe-opener at Ascot before settling for third in a tight finish behind Caravaggio in the Commonwealth Cup. He rounded off the campaign by scoring on his return to Ascot and, although some early overseas forays did not pay off, he returned to the Berkshire turf in spectacular fashion the following summer to blitz Battaash and Mabs Cross in the King’s Stand. It was a fine training feat by Appleby to keep a lid on such a powerful sprinter for a

Sandy Lane at Haydock, and his retirement in July came with the addendum that Coolmore had acquired him. It should be noted that it is not just the presence of Kingman that contributes to his package as he traces from the brilliant Juddmonte family of star juvenile Distant Music. Calyx’s dam Helleborine beat Immortal Verse in the Prix d’Aumale as a two-year-old and is a sister to Sprint Cup heroine African Rose, herself a cherished member of the Juddmonte broodmare band. “He had an explosive turn of foot, as did his sire Kingman, while his dam is a Group-winning two-year-old and a full-sister to a Group 1-winning sprinter,” said Coolmore’s director of sales David O’Loughlin. “He’s a quality individual too, so he has the complete package.”

prolonged period but Blue Point was perhaps never better than at five, sweeping unbeaten through the Dubai Carnival, defending his King’s Stand title and backing up four days later in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes. He heads to stud as a priceless asset for Darley, especially as he was rated the equal of his illustrious father.
Calyx
4 b Kingman-Helleborine (Observatory) Coolmore Stud; €22,500 RPR 118 With the breeding industry gripped by Kingman fever, it seems ideal timing for Coolmore to be able to unveil the sensation’s first son to head to stud as a more economical alternative to a
titan who can now command a £150,000 fee. Calyx, similarly trained by John Gosden for Khalid Abdullah, has achieved other firsts for his father, becoming his inaugural winner when scooting up on his debut by five lengths at Newmarket. Just ten days later he earned Kingman a Royal Ascot win in the Coventry Stakes and
justified increasing hype as the 2-1 hotpot in the race. It is thought that effort contributed to a bone injury that was to keep the youngster on the sidelines for the rest of the campaign, but he could hardly have been more impressive on his comeback at the same course the following May, showing a blistering turn of foot to put the trial for the
Commonwealth Cup to bed in a matter of strides. He would not make the royal meeting once more, a leg injury intervening after his surprise defeat in the

prowess in a reasonably busy juvenile campaign, landing a Listed event over a distance short of a mile before joining a fine cast including Sea The Stars as a winner of the Beresford Stakes. He even attained a Group 1 placing, finishing just over a length behind Waldgeist in the Critérium de Saint-Cloud. After a slow start to 2017, Capri was to gain his revenge on the subsequent Arc hero, as well as Derby winner Wings Of Eagles and a certain Cracksman when reaching his pinnacle in the Irish Derby. A month and a half later he was to defeat subsequent Group 1 scorers Crystal Ocean, Stradivarius, Rekindling and Coronet in the St Leger. He was to win only once more in a career that became somewhat stop-start, but he was not beaten far by Enable in the Arc and had set a standard that would have been hard to surpass in any case.
Crystal Ocean
6 b Sea The Stars-Crystal Star (Mark Of Esteem) The Beeches Stud; €8,000 RPR 129 Joint-best Flat performer in Europe on Racing Post Ratings last year and participant in several of the most memorable finishes in recent history, Crystal Ocean was an eyecatching announcement for Coolmore’s jumping division following a career-ending leg injury last September. He epitomised the patience shown by a traditional owner-breeder such as Sir Evelyn de Rothschild and trainer Sir Michael Stoute, developed from a family that has repeatedly shown class and tenacity. Raced only once at the backend of his two-year-old term, he was anything but disgraced behind Permian on his third start in the Dante and again in the King Edward VII Stakes. Stoute steered him through a favoured route to the St Leger via a win in the Gordon Stakes at Goodwood, and he came up only half a length short in that magnificent running of the Classic at Doncaster. Out of Fred Darling runner-up Crystal Star, who also produced the slow-burning Canadian International winner Hillstar and multiple Group-winning filly Crystal Capella, it was no surprise he got better with age, a three-race streak in the following season culminating in the Hardwicke back at Royal Ascot. Crystal Ocean was then to take part in one of two epic King Georges, going down by a whisker to stablemate Poet’s Word in a head-bobbing thriller. Last year he was to finally earn that elusive Group 1, trumping Magical and Waldgeist in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes and later pushing Enable as hard as any had when succumbing by
Darley freshman Blue Point was a four-time Group 1 winner who won last year’s King’s Stand and Diamond Jubilee Stakes in a brilliant swansong to his racing career
Crystal Ocean was a participant in several of the most memorable finishes in recent history only a neck back in Ascot’s mid-season classic. After those exploits, he still managed to push an up-and-coming Japan all the way to the line in the Juddmonte International. As accomplished as any of Sea The Stars’ progeny, he was never out of the frame in 17 career starts and should not be discarded as a possible potent sire under both codes.
Eqtidaar
5 b Invincible Spirit-Madany (Acclamation) Nunnery Stud; £6,500 RPR 115 Another speed-filled inclusion by the mighty Invincible Spirit,
he showed immediate sparkle by making a winning two-year-old debut at Nottingham for Sir Michael Stoute. It looked a little too much, too soon, when fourth behind Invincible Army in the Group 3 Sirenia Stakes, but he got a lot closer to that rival when second to him in the Pavilion Stakes the following season. Stoute felt there were mitigating factors that day, as well as when badly drawn in a follow-up effort at Newbury, with the trainer’s perseverance paying off handsomely in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot. Hitting the front inside the last of the six furlongs, Eqtidaar was to ward off a field full of past and future Group scorers headed by Sands Of Mali, later a winner of the British Champions Sprint. Eqtidaar is out of a broodmare, Madany, who Shadwell has excelled with. His Crystal Ocean: last season’s Prince of Wales’s Stakes winner was never out of the frame in 17 career starts
half-brother Massaat has also become a stallion on the back of runner-up efforts in both the Dewhurst and the 2,000 Guineas and a victory in the Hungerford Stakes at Newbury.
Flag Of Honour
5 b Galileo-Hawala (Warning) National Stud; £4,500 RPR 116 The Irish St Leger winner represents a fascinating broadening in diversity for the National Stud’s dual-purpose division. His tenure in Newmarket, on behalf of major National Hunt owner Trevor Hemmings’ Gleadhill House Stud, was announced unexpectedly last November. “We feel there’s definitely a gap in the market in Britain for a horse of his calibre,” said the stud’s director Tim Lane, pointing out that a Group 1-scoring son of Galileo was one attraction, as well as his recruit having been able to win in Group 3 company as a two-year-old and later showing tenacity in smart company. While he beat the likes of Latrobe and Idaho in the 2018 Irish Classic, he also claimed
two further Pattern successes and ran second to stablemate Magical on three separate occasions, including in the Tattersalls Gold Cup. Flag Of Honour is not only by Galileo; he is from a spectacular family bred by David and Diane Nagle’s Barronstown Stud. His dam, the winning Warning mare Hawala, produced 11 other winners including Air Chief Marshal (Minstrel Stakes), Misu Bond (European Free Handicap) and Foxtrot Romeo, who finished runner-up to Power in the Irish 2,000 Guineas.
Inns Of Court
6 b Invincible Spirit-Learned Friend (Seeking The Gold) Tally-Ho Stud; €7,500 RPR 121 Although Andre Fabre is more readily associated with middle-distance performers, Inns Of Court took him back to the higher levels of the sprinting division with his most prominent moment in last year’s Prix du Gros Chêne. It was a one and only start over five furlongs for a son of Invincible Spirit who was initially campaigned as a
Classic horse – he earned a place in the 2017 French Guineas after winning his trial but dropped away after leading at halfway. Fabre persisted at a mile and very nearly gained his reward with Inns Of Court running stablemate Al Wukair to a short head in the Jacques le Marois – ahead of Godolphin’s other runner Thunder Snow. He was to win the Prix de Ris-Orangis over six furlongs and was also within a cigarette paper of a seven-furlong Group 1 when ousted by a late-finishing One Master in the Prix de la Forêt. Inns Of Court is a Godolphin homebred out of Seeking The Gold mare Learned Friend, who was also trained by Fabre, and is a half-brother to Fierement, a top-class stayer in Japan who landed both the Tenno Sho and Kikuka Sho.
Invincible Army
5 b Invincible Spirit-Rajeem (Diktat) Yeomanstown Stud; €10,000 RPR 118 Another with genuine potential to provide a younger and more affordable entry to

Invincible Spirit’s blood, Yeomanstown brings to market a stallion with ticks in plenty of boxes. Owned by Saeed Manana and trained by James Tate, he was able to win the Group 3 Sirenia Stakes as a two-year-old as well as filling the runner-up berth in each of the Molecomb, Gimcrack and Mill Reef Stakes. At three, he defeated the subsequent Commonwealth Cup winner in the Pavilion Stakes on his three-year-old comeback and was later a nose second to Sands Of Mali in the Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock. He regained his form at four, taking the Cammidge Trophy, Duke of York and Chipchase Stakes and running creditably in both the Flying Five and Prix de l’Abbaye. Invincible Army’s other asset is that he has stallion potential in his blood. Not only has his sire produced the likes of Kingman and I Am Invincible,
he is also bred on the same Diktat cross as Cable Bay. His dam Rajeem landed the Falmouth Stakes, while 2019 Fred Darling Stakes winner Dandhu, as well as Prix Morny heroine Hoh Magic, are also in the family.

for Coolmore, Land Force made early gains by finishing third in the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot and later winning a Listed event at Tipperary. His finest hour came in the Richmond Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, where he put the likes of Marie’s Diamond and Konchek to the sword, before taking fourth in the Prix Morny. Land Force was restricted to a sole effort under the new guise of King Of Yulong in Australia before he returned to Europe. Originally a €350,000 purchase at the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale
in 2017, he was bred by Evie Stockwell out of the Group 3-winning Rock Of Gibraltar mare Theann, also the dam of US Grade 1 winner Photo Call. Theann’s dam was Trevor Stewart’s outstanding sprinter Cassandra Go, a half-sister to Verglas. She was responsible for Classic heroine Halfway To Heaven, who in turn is the dam of Land Force: one of No Nay Never’s first sons to retire to stud
top-flight trio Flying The Flag, Magical and Rhododendron.
Le Brivido
6 b Siyouni-La Bugatty (Dr Fong) Overbury Stud; £7,000 RPR 118 With Siyouni in peak demand in France, his sons are sure to find favour across the Channel and Le Brivido is among the very best of them. Out of a half-sister to Dansant, the multiple Listed-winning all-weather specialist, he made a smart start for Andre Fabre and went as close as possible to landing the 2017 French 2,000 Guineas before the late lunge of Brametot. He was on the right side of a
photo-finish in the Jersey Stakes and, following nearly a year on the sidelines with Fabre, he ran well in both the Queen Anne and Diamond Jubilee Stakes when switched to Ballydoyle. Part-owners Coolmore have retained an investment and Overbury manager Simon Sweeting is hopeful the horse can follow his forefathers in graduating from a small fee to higher order. “His sire’s fee jumped up to €100,000, and his grandsire [Pivotal] went from £6,000 to a high of £85,000,” he said. “There isn’t a more upwardly mobile sire line and Le Brivido could make a lot of breeders very happy if he follows their lead.”

‘It’s a real honour to stand a horse of the quality of Masar’ short on new representatives for this year – not to mention those already passing on his glowing reputation for another generation – Magna Grecia has a unique quality being the Irish National Stud stalwart’s first British Classic winner. The stallion has already had winners of the French and Irish blue ribands with Lawman and Kingman, not to mention the latter and Territories placing second in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket. Magna Grecia landed the honours at Newmarket in May with a consummate performance under Aidan O’Brien’s son Donnacha. Magna Grecia had already enjoyed an almost perfect juvenile campaign, losing out by only a neck to Persian King in the Autumn Stakes and finishing on a high by landing the Vertem Futurity at Doncaster. The Guineas will be the effort he is remembered for, as he was reported by O’Brien to have pulled a hamstring when fifth behind his old rival Phoenix Of Spain in the Irish Guineas. He appeared only once more when readily forgiven a listless effort after many months off on heavy ground in the QEII. Bred by Australian Bob Scarborough, Masar: “From one of the best families in the studbook”
Magna Grecia achieved 340,000gns when bought by Coolmore at the 2016 Tattersalls December Foal Sale – a figure almost quadrupled when the same firm swooped for his Siyouni half-brother at Book 1 last year. Although the dam is waiting for another of her progeny to take such a great leap forward, she has a solid foundation as a half-sister to Solario Stakes scorer Drumfire and smart sprinter Ho Choi.
Masar
5 ch New Approach-Khawlah (Cape Cross) Dalham Hall; £15,000 RPR 122 The homebred Investec Derby winner Sheikh Mohammed and Godolphin had been waiting so long for, Masar had Epsom in his blood as his father New Approach had negotiated the Downs with aplomb ten years earlier. Only the decade’s second Derby hero to remain in Britain for his breeding career, he was also adding to the legacy in the race of Galileo and Sea The Stars’ dam Urban Sea, to whom he is inbred 3x4. The dam of Masar, Khawlah, a highly accomplished performer herself who completed a
UAE Oaks-Derby double in 2011, is a granddaughter of Epsom Oaks third Melikah – herself a daughter of Urban Sea and the unbeaten Derby hero Lammtarra. Not that Masar’s eclipse of Dee Ex Bee and Roaring Lion was a one-off; the powerful chestnut was a Group winner as a juvenile in the Solario Stakes who had placed in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère. He put a disappointing trip to Dubai behind him by running away with the Craven Stakes and looked a little unfortunate to be positioned on the wrong side of the track when beaten just under two lengths by Saxon Warrior in the Guineas. After losing the rest of his three-year-old season through injury, he did not look the same individual in two outings at four and, should a breeder want to produce a Derby winner on a reasonable budget, there is hardly a better qualified candidate to turn to. Sam Bullard, director of stallions for Darley, said in the autumn: “It’s a real honour to stand a horse of the quality of Masar. “From one of the best families in the studbook, he had a higher juvenile rating than his illustrious relatives Galileo and Sea The Stars. Prudent breeders will have him on their list.”

County Galway operation Windmill View moved to secure a replacement and found one in the shape of a son of the ever-underrated Farhh. Nocturnal Fox, trained by Andre Fabre for Godolphin, did not appear until he was three but hinted at plenty in a light career. His best efforts came in that first season, where he claimed a conditions event at Maisons-Laffitte and justified a big step up in class by landing the Group 2 Prix Hocquart at Chantilly. Unfortunately he did not appear from that June until the following April, failing to replicate his earlier form in three more starts. Nocturnal Fox, a Godolphin-bred half-brother to Listed winner Best Of Times, is out of a mare who was a sibling of connections’ St Leger winner Nedawi. Two further generations back the page features wondermare Dahlia.
Phoenix Of Spain
4 gr Lope De Vega-Lucky Clio (Key Of Luck) Irish National Stud; €15,000 RPR 120 A preemptive strike by the Irish National Stud to purchase the stallion rights of Phoenix Of Spain during the winter of 2018 proved inspired when Ann Plummer and Tony Wechsler’s colt triumphed in the Irish 2,000 Guineas. Trained by Charlie Hills, the grey son of Lope De Vega had already shown genuine
Frankel’s unraced son Sogann is new name to note for Yorkshire breeders potential at two in taking the Acomb Stakes at York and then running two of the season’s exceptional crop close, finishing second to Too Darn Hot in the Champagne Stakes and then just a head adrift of Magna Grecia in the Vertem Futurity. It was a fine feat for Hills to have Phoenix Of Spain spot-on to take the Irish Guineas first-up, inflicting a three-length defeat on Too Darn Hot, and although he was to suffer a small handful of subsequent reversals, he was the first in 45 years to take the Curragh highlight without a prep and that will always be in the book. Phoenix Of Spain was Lope De Vega’s first Classic winner and is a fine tribute to his late breeder Cherry Faeste as a seventh winner from as many runners from her cheaply bought Key Of Luck mare Lucky Clio, joining the likes of Group 3-placed Kingsdesire and prolific sprinter Lucky Beggar. The mare has plenty more to run in the pipeline while the Irish National Stud’s chief executive Cathal Beale said
encouragingly: “It’s a deep pedigree and one that’s effectively an outcross as you have to go back four or five generations to find any Danzig or Northern Dancer. He’ll make a really nice option for breeders.”
Sogann
4 b Frankel-Rumored (Royal Academy) Norton Grove; £2,000 Unraced One of the lesser-known Frankels in the racing universe – essentially because he never ran – Sogann nonetheless brings a distinctive pedigree to breeders in Yorkshire. Bred in partnership between Michel Monfort and Al Shaqab Racing, he was bought for €550,000 as a yearling at Arqana in 2017 as a half-brother to the Prix Morny and Jean-Luc Lagardère winner – now Haras de Grandcamp stallion – Dabirsim. The family is much sought after with another half-brother, the once-raced Shaiban, also being recruited as a stallion in France.

Soldier’s Call
4 b Showcasing-Dijarvo (Iceman) Ballyhane Stud; €10,000 RPR 116 Rapid is the word for this fellow, who provided up-and-coming star trainer Archie Watson with his first Royal Ascot winner when blistering home in the Windsor Castle. That was one of four juvenile wins for the representative of Steve Parkin’s Clipper Logistics, who was bought by the owner’s racing adviser Joe Foley and now heads to his Irish stud. Soldier’s Call was to clock as quick a time as was seen by a two-year-old in France all season in the Prix d’Arenberg of 2018 and dominated his rivals in the Flying Childers less than a fortnight later. Watson took the brave route in trying him against Europe’s best sprinters in the Prix de l’Abbaye, and he was edged out only by the marvellous mare Mabs Cross in a photo. Life remains tough for three-year-old five-furlong specialists but Solider’s Call did not let the side down, getting chased down by Royal Ascot king Blue Point in the King’s Stand and by Battaash in the Nunthorpe. One of the elite sons of Showcasing to carry his sire’s name forward, Soldier’s Call also has speed on his dam’s side with Dijarvo not only winning a Listed race at two Success Days: the fi first rst son of Jeremy to retire to stud in Ireland is a “correct horse with great bone and a terrifi terrificc walk”
but being from the family of Queen Mary and Flying Childers Stakes starlet Abeer.
Study Of Man
5 b Deep Impact-Second Happiness (Storm Cat) Lanwades Stud; £15,000 RPR 118 Two of the sport’s most renowned owner-breeders have maintained their long association to stand Study Of Man, who comes from a treasured dynasty raised by the Niarchos family and rostered at Kirsten Rausing’s Lanwades. He is a rare son of the late Deep Impact to appear in Europe and the only one to stand in Britain, having become the Japanese icon’s third European Classic winner when holding off strong pressure to lift the 2018 French Derby on only his fourth start for trainer Pascal Bary. Although unable to build on that effort in an autumn campaign, Study Of Man had more substance when returning at four, finishing
second to Waldgeist in the Prix Ganay and to Zabeel Prince in the Ispahan. What is most appealing about him, Deep Impact notwithstanding, is that he is out of a Storm Cat daughter of the legendary Miesque, lending the likes of Kingmambo and East Of The Moon to an impressive profile. At the time of her announcement in October, Rausing said: “As a son and grandson of racing legends, Study Of Man should make an outstanding addition to the worldwide breeding industry, contributing an outcross for many mares.”
Success Days
8 gr Jeremy-Malaica (Roi Gironde) Kilbarry Lodge Stud; €2,000 RPR 116 It is more than five years since the death of Jeremy, still one of the most coveted sires of National Hunt prospects. Breeders finally have a way into his family with the four-time Group winner Success Days, the only son of Jeremy available at stud in Ireland. Bred by Robert Ng and Dermot Farrington, the grey became an enduring presence for County Kildare trainer Ken Condon, landing a Group 2 in the York Stakes ahead of Mondialiste as a five-year-old as well as two Group 3s, the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial and Ballysax Stakes, at three, and the Royal Whip Stakes at four. 4 b No Nay Never-Seeking Solace (Exceed And Excel) Coolmore Stud; €25,000 RPR 125 While No Nay Never is only nine and carrying all before him, Ten Sovereigns already has the makings of a worthy successor, being his best son seen on the racecourse with a Racing Post figure even higher than his father’s. When Ten Sovereigns won by seven lengths on his debut in a late August Curragh maiden in 2018, more than a few ears pricked up, and just over a month later the youngster had taken his unbeaten streak to three by clicking through the gears in the Middle Park in what was the third fastest time in the event’s history. It was worth Aidan O’Brien having a dart at the Guineas with him, for all that speed was always going to be the nascent Coolmore star’s forte, and his fifth-placed finish behind stablemate Magna Grecia was perfectly respectable.
Ten Sovereigns has the makings of a worthy successor to star-stallion father That much-desired Group 1 at three was not long in coming; indeed when given his head in front he dismissed three top-level stars in Advertise, Fairyland and Pretty Pollyanna in a defining display in the July Cup. The standout performer out of Seeking Solace, a Darley mare obtained by the Coolmore-affiliated Camas Park, Lynch-Bages and Summerhill, he is sure to be popular at €25,000 with his sire’s fee skyrocketing.
The Irish Rover
4 b No Nay Never-Shelley Beach (Danehill Dancer) Sweep Lane Stud; price on application RPR 109 Another more economical option for those priced out of No Nay Never, The Irish Rover is another of his sons who showed plenty of early dash. Trained by Aidan O’Brien, he ran away with a conditions event at Newbury and produced the best effort of his life that same summer of 2018, setting the pace and finishing just a length behind Advertise in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes.
The Irish Rover followed up with a determined fourth behind Emaraaty Ana in the Gimcrack in what was a busy eight-race campaign. He went on to finish runner-up in Listed company at Navan as a three-year-old. Bred by Lynch-Bages and Longfield Stud, he was sold for 150,000gns at Tattersalls Book 1 and is out of the Danehill Dancer mare Shelley Beach, a half-sister to the prolific Australian mare Skiddaw Peak who has produced a transatlantic winner in the shape of West Palm Beach.
Too Darn Hot
4 b Dubawi-Dar Re Mi (Singspiel) Dalham Hall; £50,000 RPR 125 The breeding future of this exceptional juvenile was wrapped up even before he had been officially crowned the season’s European champion after an agreement was reached between Darley and his breeders Lord and Lady Lloyd-Webber. He is the biggest-ticket item among this year’s stallion

intake, not only owing to his fee, but from racing performance and his membership of a seriously blue-chip family. Too Darn Hot was scintillating in all four of his starts in 2018, running away with the Solario at Sandown and impressing again when beating Phoenix Of Spain in the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster. He earned his laurels by landing the Dewhurst by two and three-quarter lengths from a notable pair in Advertise and Anthony Van Dyck. Although unable to make the 2,000 Guineas because of a slight setback, he returned to place in the Dante, the Irish 2,000 Guineas and the St James’s Palace Stakes before returning to Group 1-winning form in the Jean Prat. After his final start, when turning the tables on Circus Maximus in the Sussex Stakes, he was found to have sustained a hairline fracture of a hind cannonbone and was promptly retired. Not only by all-conquering Dubawi, Too Darn Hot is from a cherished Watership Down dynasty that includes the dam of Darshaan. He is out of multiple Group 1 winner Dar Re Mi and is a brother to St Leger second Lah Ti Dar and the accomplished So Mi Dar. The next brother down the Waldgeist: the Arc hero retires to Ballylinch Stud as the earner of more than £4 million in career prize-money
line, the as-yet unraced Darain, sold for an astonishing 3,500,000gns to Qatar Racing at Tattersalls Book 1 in 2018.
Waldgeist
6 ch Galileo-Waldlerche (Monsun) Ballylinch Stud; €17,500 RPR 128 Victories do not come any more famous than Waldgeist’s in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, where he ended Enable’s hat-trick-seeking bid for equine immortality – although a shot at an unprecedented third success is the wondermare’s goal this season – and sealed his own place in racing’s annals in the process. In terms of racing performance, it was as fine an effort as was seen all year, with not only racing’s queen of the turf behind him but eight other Group 1 winners, including the truly exciting three-year-olds Sottsass and Japan. It was not undeserved, either; Waldgeist earned more than £4 million in his career and already had plenty of excellent efforts to his name, notably landing the Critérium de Saint-Cloud at two and finishing a
narrow second to Brametot in the French Derby at three. Although he toiled behind Enable as a four-year-old, he had defeated another of John Gosden’s star fillies, Coronet, in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and collected the first of two Prix Foys, plus putting another Group 1 in the cabinet at five when coming comfortably clear of Study Of Man in the Prix Ganay. Waldgeist, as his name might hint, is a member of Gestüt Ravensberg’s hallowed but still distinctly current ‘W’ family as the first foal out of Waldlerche, a Group 3-winning daughter of Monsun who is also responsible for last year’s Prix de Malleret winner Waldlied. Waldlerche’s half-sister is the St Leger winner Masked Marvel, while there is black type across the page through other relatives such as Wonderment, who followed in Waldgeist’s hoofprints in the 2018 Critérium de Saint-Cloud, and German Derby hero Waldpark. Waldgeist is the first Arc winner to stand in Ireland for a decade and is in safe hands at Ballylinch, where his patrons are sure to include his high-profile breeders Gestüt Ammerland and Newsells Park Stud.

BLOODSTOCK SPECIAL NEW SIRES FOR 2020 IRISH THOROUGHBRED MARKETING
Waldgeist is shown to visitors at Ballylinch Stud at this month's ITM Irish Stallion Trail
Tom Peacock talks to Dietrich von Boetticher about the breeding and ownership collaboration responsible for Waldgeist
T
HERE is already a shining example at Ballylinch Stud of a pan-European partnership from which both sides have gained considerable benefit. Lope De Vega arrived in County Kilkenny after his French Derby success in 2010 and has surely exceeded even the most fanciful of expectations, his fee multiplying almost seven-fold to €100,000 and his offspring having gathered more than a century of stakes wins. So when Dietrich von Boetticher and the Jacobs family’s Newsells Park Stud, the joint-owners and breeders of Waldgeist, had a decision to make about where to provide last year’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner with the surest footing to build another budding stallion’s profile, one place was high on the shortlist. “I’ve been involved with them for many, many years and I’ve always had a very good feeling about them,” says Von Boetticher, whose Gestüt Ammerland was the sole breeder of Lope De Vega. “They are very professional in every respect, including sales, and bringing good mares to him, which is very important.” He continues: “Ireland is a great place for a stallion to stand because it has fantastic mares, and lots of them. “Not too many of them are stayers, but that’s another reason to give Waldgeist a chance to be in an environment that is maybe a little bit different than what he'd get, for example, in Germany or France. “We just don’t have the base of mares in Germany that he deserves, we have to recognise that. There are
‘If Waldgeist can do what Lope De Vega has done it would be fantastic’ good lines in Germany, but by far not what you see in Ireland, England or France. “It was also suggested I should maybe stand him in France but, no, I very much like the idea of him standing in Ireland, and Ballylinch Stud has done a fantastic job for me with Lope De Vega. They’re not too big – although they’re growing fast – so it’s an ideal place for him.” Ammerland, which has been in operation from the banks of Lake Starnberg since 1989, has produced many champions in its red and green silks beginning with Borgia, the wondermare who won the German Derby and ended up travelling the globe while cementing an alliance with trainer Andre Fabre that continues to Waldgeist and beyond. It appears that this was one of the bonds that brought about four-time Group 1 winner Waldgeist, who is out of the Newsells-bred Waldlerche,
‘The mother was a bit crazy, to put it mildly. She decided she would train herself in the woods of Chantilly without a jockey on her’ Dietrich von Boetticher
winner of the Group 3 Prix Pénélope at Saint-Cloud in a brief career for Fabre. “The mother was a bit crazy, to put it mildly,” says Von Boetticher, breaking into a laugh. “She decided she would train herself in the woods of Chantilly without a jockey on her. Andre said ‘I think you have to take her back’, so I brought her home to Germany, but the offspring is completely trustworthy.” Thankfully the two German dynasties persevered. “It’s such a lucky coincidence that, with Andreas Jacobs and his family, we’ve done this together,” he says. “There’s so much more pleasure out of a successful partnership than if you do it all on your own. “That [blood]line comes from Andreas’s stud farm. I was attracted to it, and Andreas in turn was interested in having horses in training with Andre, and Andre doesn’t take new owners. “But he does like German families because they’re quite robust, they’re typically staying horses, which Andre can handle very well. So between the three of us, very quickly we had an agreement in place.” The arrangement worked perfectly, with Waldlerche producing not only Waldgeist but his sibling Waldlied, who enjoyed a brief but immensely promising career. Just as exciting is the mare’s fourth foal, Waldkonig, who made an astonishing debut for John Gosden last month in winning
his maiden by nine lengths when still palpably very green. “I think we have some who may turn out to be quite good,” says the Munich-based lawyer cryptically when asked about the Kingman colt. “We’re looking forward to it.”
W
HILE Waldgeist might represent some of the cream of German pedigrees, Von Boetticher is adamant about the other part of the formula. He has long admired Galileo (Waldgeist’s sire), with the juggernaut stallion also providing him with a French Guineas-Oaks double in 2011 through Golden Lilac. “If Waldgeist can do what Lope De Vega has done it would be fantastic,” he says. “But in all of this we should keep in mind that Coolmore is a huge part of the success. Without them, without that sire, where would we be? “In the history of breeding I can’t see any sire who has been so consistent – Galileo here, Galileo there, all distances. It’s a great moment.” Landing the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe with a horse in his own colours is a
dream Von Boetticher admitted he had long held. “It’s the best feeling you can have,” he says. “I’d bred an Arc winner before, but by the time Hurricane Run won [in 2005] I’d sold him to Coolmore. But he came from Ammerland and he returned to Ammerland to enjoy a quiet life with us. He was a great horse, by all scores, he could handle everything.” Waldgeist, who tied with Enable and Crystal Ocean at the top of the recent Longines World’s Best Racehorse rankings, has been pitched at €17,500 and, with no shortage of Galileo’s sons at stud, however accomplished, it will be necessary to err on the side of caution as to his prospects. And the enthusiastic man behind him will do his best to help him along. “I’ll use him of course, already I have certain mares earmarked, but it’s too early really to talk about that now,” Von Boetticher says. “I’m also using Lope with my mares. “Now it’s whether Waldgeist is able to produce offspring who can follow in his footsteps – a future Arc winner, perhaps?” Dietrich von Boetticher: "Ireland is a great place for a stallion to stand"

BLOODSTOCK SPECIAL NEW SIRES FOR 2020
City Light has what it takes to make mark in French Flat stallion ranks Mainland Europe
CITY LIGHT is the highest-rated new recruit to the Flat stallion ranks in continental Europe this year. The six-year-old earned a peak Racing Post Rating of 121 for finishing a short-head second to Merchant Navy in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot, and was also a dual Group 3 winner over five and seven furlongs. City Light has plenty to recommend him on pedigree too, as he is the first son of soaraway sire Siyouni to stand in France and is a half-brother to stakes performers Busybeingfabulous and Soft Light out of a winning daughter of Kendor and US Grade 1 winner Leariver. Unsurprisingly, then, he is the most expensive new Flat sire in France in 2020, starting out at Haras d’Etreham at €7,000. The second-highest-rated newcomer to the mainland European stallion ranks is another top-class sprinter in Donjuan Triumphant, a son of the increasingly popular Dream Ahead who was a wide-margin winner of the Critérium de Maisons-Laffitte at two and who signed off his career with victory in the British Champions Sprint at six. He stands at Haras de la Barbottière at a fee of €4,000 alongside fellow inductee Robin Of Navan, a son of American Post who won the Critérium de Saint-Cloud at two, was a multiple Group winner and was twice second at the highest level. The French ranks have gained two Derby winners, with Pour Moi’s defection to Haras de Cercy and Ruler Of The World – sire of multiple Group 1-winning filly Iridessa from his first crop – joining his co-owner Al Shaqab Racing’s Haras de Bouquetot. Their fees are €3,500 and €6,000 respectively. The award for best bred new stallion in France this year must go to Taj Mahal at Haras de la Haie Neuve. The Group 2 scorer is a Galileo brother to Classic winners Gleneagles and Marvellous and another elite winner in Happily; their dam You’resothrilling is a Cherry Hinton Stakes-winning Storm Cat sister to Giant’s Causeway and to the mother of Decorated Knight. The most popular retirees in France this year might, however, be the accomplished jumpers Goliath Du Berlais and Nirvana Du Berlais in the flourishing National Hunt scene across the Channel.

Both are Grade 1 winners at Auteuil and by ace sires themselves. Goliath Du Berlais, a son of Saint Des Saints, has taken up residence at Haras de Tuilerie at a fee of €7,500, while Nirvana Du Berlais, by Martaline, has been signed up by Haras de la Hetraie and commands a price of €6,500. Hetraie also introduces to breeders the first son of
Le Havre to go to stud, the Prix Greffulhe winner Roman Candle. His debut fee is €2,800. Germany has an enticing new recruit for the year ahead in the shape of Best Solution, winner of the country’s most prestigious all-aged race, the Grosser Preis von Baden, as well as the Caulfield Cup. Being by Kodiac, he could help sharpen up those stouter German pedigrees and is being pitched at Gestüt Auenquelle at €6,500. MARTIN STEVENS

Relocated pair by Monsun sure to interest jumps breeders On the move to or within Britain/Ireland
JUMPS breeders based in Britain and Ireland have some interesting new transferrals from continental Europe to factor into mating plans this year, writes Martin Stevens. Two in particular, sons of Monsun on either side of the Irish Sea, stand out. Dual Group 1 winner Maxios, a half-brother to Arc hero Bago and sire of German Oaks scorer Diamanta in his second crop, moves to Castlehyde Stud in County Cork, while Masterstroke, a Group 2-winning grandson of Urban Sea, heads to Yorton Farm Stud in Powys. Yorton Farm has another new addition from a German sire-line in 2020 in the shape of Scalo, a Group 1-winning son of Lando and the source of last year’s German Derby victor Laccario.
They will attempt to fill the void left at Yorton Farm by the departure of Blue Bresil to Glenview Stud in County Cork. The 15-year-old son of Smadoun, who has supplied stars such as Ibis De Rheu,
Le Prezien and Mick Jazz, is sure to be popular with Irish breeders. Further north in Ireland, Boardsmill Stud in County Meath has landed something of a coup by purchasing
Prince of Wales’s Stakes and King George winner Poet’s Word for dual-purpose duty after one season standing as a Flat stallion at Nunnery Stud in Norfolk. Joshua Tree, a three-time

Canadian International winner by Montjeu, is another eyecatching new National Hunt sire in Ireland, taking up residence at Con O’Keeffe’s Kilbarry Lodge Stud in County Waterford. On the Flat side, the transfer of Unfortunately from Cheveley Park Stud in Newmarket to Springfield House Stud in County Tipperary could be an inspired move as Irish commercial breeders should embrace a son of the short-lived Tally-Ho Stud sire Society Rock, who got good-looking, sharp and speedy stock.
