Derek O’Connor Straight to the Point

Lalor is a highly popular champion following in an amazing tradition

T

here was no doubt about the star of the show at Nenagh on Sunday. It was not just that Liz Lalor rode the 100th winner of her point-to-point career, but the fact she did so less than six weeks after giving birth to daughter Alex. That tells you all you need to know about the determination and dedication to the sport shown by Liz, who has been champion lady rider outright on four occasions, including the last two seasons, as well as sharing the title three times. She brought the century up on Cloudy Morning for the inform Declan Queally. One more win will put her level for second with Rosemary Rooney on the all-time lady riders’ list, and she will then need only another six to break the record of 106 which has stood since Helen Bryce-Smith retired in 1974. Liz, who rode her first point winner in 2003, had a careerbest of 13 wins from 36 rides last season. The statistics of a great career include 11 wins on the family’s home-bred Carrigeen Acebo, 11 wins from just 23 rides in the 2014/15 season, and more than 20 wins on the track, including a Listed chase at Thurles in 2007 on Carrigeen Kalmia. Unfortunately, the point-topoint world doesn’t feature in the TG4 documentary Jump Girls, which is attracting a lot of attention, and does a great job in highlighting the brilliant achievements of riders such as Nina Carberry, Katie Walsh and Rachael Blackmore. That’s a bit of an omission in my view since female riders have made a massive contribution to point-to-point racing going back to the days of the Rooney sisters, Rosemary and Ann (Ferris), Helen BryceSmith, and my late mother Jean (Moore). Carmel Connaughton rode a heap of winners in the 1980s, Lillian Doyle and Lulu Olivefalk were among many successful riders in the 1990s, and later Liz Doyle and Clare MacMahon managed significant totals, while Katie and Nina rode their fair share as well as enjoying huge success on the track.

Rachael also reached double figures before joining the professional ranks. Liz is a highly popular champion following in a great tradition. It’s amazing she’s back in the saddle so quickly. Sunday was also a big day for Alannah Budds, an 18-year-old Leaving Certficate student. She rode her first point winner, Mrs Mcro, for her cousin Ken Budds in a mares’ maiden at Knockanard.

Bowe hits the target with maidens

There was plenty of lively action at the weekend. The Kildare meeting at Punchestown kicked off with a competitive four-year-old maiden won in good style by

Power Of Pause, a Doyen gelding trained by Paddy Turley and ridden by Mark O’Hare. He looks a nice sales prospect for the Turley yard in which Declan Lavery plays a big role. Rainbow Chaser, a Stowaway gelding having his fourth start, made his experience count by winning the 17-runner fiveyear-old maiden for Colin Bowe and owner Larry Dunne. He’s a staying horse in the making. Six individual riders enjoyed success at the fixture, including a couple of up-and-coming names. Tiernan Roche rode Change Your Story to give Peter Maher his fourth consecutive win in a race often seen as a trial for the Bishopscourt Cup at Punchestown, and Simon Cavanagh won the mares’

maiden on Thunder Dragon for Shane Byrne. There was a good spread of winners at the other meetings, with several members of the younger generation getting in on the act, including Jamie Scallan in the novice riders’ event at Knockanard. Bowe produced a smartlooking type to win the fouryear-old maiden at Knockanard. Ferny Hollow, a Westerner gelding, made all under Jimmy O’Rourke to win by 15 lengths from the Pat Doyle-trained Gigginstown runner Bloodstone. The winner is a half-brother to several winners, including two mares who were trained by Willie Mullins, Chiltern Hills and Vittorio.

Finally, one result from the Nenagh meeting gave me particular pleasure, a win for Loughrask Breeze, ridden by Eoin Mahon and trained by Brian McMahon in a mares’ maiden. Owner-breeder Thomas Vaughan, a native of Ballyvaughan, County Clare, has been involved as an owner since 1992 and this was his first winner. He was responsible for giving me opportunities early in my career and I’m thrilled for him.

Foxhunter hopefuls impress with wins

Only a few weeks to go now and the hunter chase scene is hotting up ahead of Cheltenham.

We saw potentially the two most significant performances of the season at the weekend. Road To Rome, who won three points in Britain at the end of last year, reeled off his fourth consecutive hunter chase win with a top-class display under Sam WaleyCohen at Haydock on Saturday. A day later, Ucello Conti came through his latest test at Navan, making it three wins in a row, which should have gone a long way towards rebuilding the confidence he may have lost during the long period when he ran really well in valuable handicaps without winning. The Foxhunter looks competitive and I have a great deal of respect for Hazel Hill, who won nicely at Warwick.

NEWS AND VIEWS

Eoghain Ward

Lalor joins elite group with 100th point winner LIZ LALOR won all the weekend headlines in the point-to-point world when she became just the third female rider to reach the 100-winner mark with success at Nenagh on Sunday. Even more remarkably, she achieved her milestone on her first ride of the season on Cloudy Morning, less than six weeks after giving birth to her daughter Alex. The seven-time champion is one of the sport’s all-time greats, with a long list of accomplishments stretching back to her first success at Clonmel on Roseboreen, just one day short of 16 years to the day before her career century was achieved. Despite missing the opening four months of the season while on maternity leave, few would bet against Lalor adding to her title hauls given her recent dominance, as she pursues the all-time record. Her next success will bring her level with Rosemary Rooney on the 101-winner mark, with a fur t her f ive victor ies t hen required to match Helen BryceSmith’s all-time record of 106 career point-to-point winners. That record has stood for 45 years, highlighting just how significant an achievement it would be in the sport’s history.

IHRB issues drug testing advice

The IHRB is strongly encouraging all qualified riders to attend one of two anti-doping seminars to be held next month. The seminars will be held at the Keadeen Hotel in Newbridge on March 5 and a fortnight later in the Horse & Jockey Hotel, Tipperary on March 20. They will be par ticularly relevant to point-to-point riders ahead of the introduction of drug testing at point-to-points within the next few weeks.

Maiden winners set to go under the hammer

The first four-year-old maiden winners of 2019 will come under the hammer as part of 38 horsees to be offered at tomorrow’’s m Tattersalls Ireland Cheltenham February sale. In all, five of the eight fourrar year-old maiden winners so fa this year will be auctioned w Donnchadh Doyle’s Tallow winner Deploy The Getawayy, Cor mac Far rell’s Cragmor e winner Wide Receiver, Pat Doyle’’s n Fado Des Brosses and the Colin Bowe-trained pair of Telmesomethinggirl and Fernyy Hollow are sure to be among the pick of the Irish point-to-pointerrs seeking new owners. k The equine influenza outbreak which has dominated all thee

headlines, particularly in Britain, where racing was cancelled for six days, has not left the sales untouched. Irish-trained horses travelling to run in Britain are required to provide a negative result for equine inf luenza from a nasopharyngeal swab 72 hours before entry to the country, and a similar requirement has been put in place by the BHA for tomorrow’s sale, with handlers required to provide a negative result for equine influenza within a 96-hour window. Owing to the timings of when testing was available, handlers running horses last Sunday were advised to swab any horse they felt may be likely to head to the sales before the weekend to ensure they could travel if the horse went on to run well at either Punc hestown, Nenagh or Knockanard. Not all handlers were able to do so, which has prevented some from travelling.

Carlow Farmers reap reward for innovation

Hunt member races, ladies’ sidesaddle races and pony races are among the many additional events featured on point-to-point cards in recent years, and the Carlow Farmers are going to add another to the list when they stage a stable staff bumper at Borris House next month. The two-mile Flat race for stable staff on March 3 excludes those riders who hold a rider’s licence, with only horses holding a valid hunter certificate eligible to take part and they must comply with the current IHRB equine influenza rules. Many handlers have spoken of the difficulty in retaining stable staff, where it’s not always possible to give staff members rides in point-to-points, and so the Carlow Farmers committee deser ve plenty of credit for providing such an opportunity. It is already drawing plenty of interest from within the local area.

Malone achieves unique double in Britain

British-based bloodstock agent Tom Malone is best known as one of the leading buyers of horses who graduate from the sport, having purchased the likes of Malone Road and Envoi Allen (below) last year, in addition to the 2018 Gold Cup winner Native River. However, on Saturday he achieved a unique feat in British point-to-point racing when he saddled the same horse to win twice at Wadebridge. The Last But One won consecutive races, a walkover in the ladies’ open, followed 30 minutes later with victory in the men’s equivalent, with the sevenyear-old the only finisher in the two-horse race. Malone tried to complete the hat-trick on Sunday in another small-field race at Buckfastleigh However, Will Biddick’s mount could manage only second in the three-runner contest. Irish rules allow horses to be entered in more than one race on card, but they are the same card limited to being declared for one. Envoi Allen winning at Leopardstown

KILLEAGH teenager Alannah Budds made it a memorable day when landing her first point-topoint winner. It came on her cousin Ken Budd’s Mrs Mcro in the older mares’ maiden. However, victory seemed a distant thought when West Vintage galloped into an eightlength advantage from two-out and had the race at her mercy. But the latter ran extremely wide off the bend well before the final fence, allowing Mrs Mcro, who was only seventh with four fences remaining, to surge through and join issue on the flat. After a thrilling tussle on the run to the line, the 18-year-old Budds urged her mount into a neck lead in the dying strides. Budds, who won with Here For The Craic at Tipperar y last summer, is studying for her Leaving Cert in Youghal. Trainer Ken Budds said: “I was delighted to give Alannah a winner. She rides out for me at the weekends now and she’s a terrific worker.” All nine runners in the Coolagown Stud & AIB Fermoy four-year-old maiden were newcomers and the Colin Bowetrained Ferny Hollow created a hugely favourable impression. The son of Westerner was quickly bounced out in front and made virtually all the running. Although blundering two-out,

Ferny Hollow made a lasting impression, quickening clear to win impressively – he could be top class under rules he asserted readily on the climb from the penultimate fence and powered clear to beat Bloodstone by a widening 15 lengths. Bought by his trainer’s Kiltealybased cousin JJ Bowe for €38,000 at last year’s Derby sale, the chaser is likely to be seen in new colours when racing again. The biggest field of the day, 15 runners, lined up in the Rathbarry Stud & Tattersalls Ireland fiveyear-old geldings’ maiden and it was run at a blistering pace throughout with Notice To Close springing a major surprise under Mikey O’Connor. They grey, who fell and pulled up on his previous two starts, led from the fourth fence and had Bar rowlands as his closest pursuer until the latter moved past before two-out. Notice To Close, however, refused to yield and stormed back to the front after the final fence to beat Barrowlands by a neck. “We hadn’t given a lot of thought to it, but I suppose he’ll go to the track now,” said trainer Seamus Neville. Owner-trainer Tom Keating’s P ay L a te r vindicated t he

promise of his most recent fourth at Kilfeacle by providing 22-yearold rider Jamie Scallan with an eighth career success in the Coolmore & Grange Stud & Shinnicks Spar Fermoy six-yearold geldings’ maiden. The six-year-old benefited from pacesetting tactics and edged into a couple of lengths advantage on the run to two-out. He gave his supporters major cause for alarm, however, by jumping to the left at the final fence, but Occupied was not able to capitalise and was still two lengths adrift at the line. “He ran well at Kilfeacle and handled the soft ground here. If I still have him, he’ll go for a winners of one,” said Keating. Riordans Supervalu & Cafe Ed Fermoy mares’ winner of one was run at a sensible pace and the Michael Winters-trained Osca Loca benefited from a welljudged waiting ride from Chris O’Donovan to beat Rosfoyle. The six-year-old, representing the executors of the late Carl Beame, eased through to go third after two-out. She stormed past Cool Dove before the last and, although Rosfoyle went second 75 yards out, won by three lengths. “She’s a staying type who settled well and loved the ground. We’ll now train her for the mares’ hunter chase at Cork over Easter,” said Winters.

The Glenview Stud & McCarthy Insurance Group, Fermoy fiveyear-old and upwards maiden saw owner-trainer Sean Allen saddle Concrete King to record a popular local success under younger brother Darragh. The five-year-old, who lay third when falling at the final fence in West Cork Wildway’s Boulta maiden over two months earlier, was always positioned towards

the head of affairs and started to stake a claim from four-out. The winning son of Morozov was well in command from the second-last and beat Fanahans Well by 10 lengths. “He’s a grand horse who I bought at the Land Rover sale as a three-year-old. He had two thumping falls before Christmas and it’s great that he’s won this race,” said the successful handler.

Young Buck could be fine staying chaser Eoghain Ward assesses winning performances at the weekend meetings

Knockanard

Sunday February 17

Ferny Hollow (93++) began to stretch the field from the third-last, and once he brushed off the challenge of French Flight (74+) he was able to return as he pleased without coming off t he br idle in impressive fashion. Notice To Close (90+) is clearly a strong stayer as he was up with the relentless pace. Headed on the climb for the straight, he battled back after the last in game fashion.

Mrs Mcro (68+) had lost touch with the leading group, but as the principals began to tire, and eventual runner-up West Vintage (67+) stopped to a walk before the last, she came through for what had seemed a very unlikely success. Osca Loca (85+) went clear from the last in the style of a horse who will win further races. Concrete King (85++) had shown promise as a four-year-old at Boulta in the autumn, and made the most of this opportunity. Pay Later (85+) picked up best in a steadily run race as he took a big step forward.

Punchestown

Sunday February 17

P o w e r O f P a u s e (94+) created a big impression in what appeared to be an ultracompetitive race, which saw his

travelling strongly throughout, before producing a potent turn of foot to quicken clear in a matter of strides. Rainbow Chaser (89+) took advantage of the slow final-fence jump from newcomer Brief Ambition (85+) to put his experience to good use and run out a game winner. Change Your Story (86+) had the strongest turn of foot to prevail in what was a very slowly run race. Some Are Lucky (103+) won his second race within seven days when picking up strongly to win going away. He is an ultraconsistent performer for connections. Thunder Dragon (79+) stamped her authority quite early in the home straight and is a horse to note for the track.

Ted (65+) was well held coming to the last only to be presented with victory when Orpen Wells (85x) fell and brought down Fiddler Of Dooney (84x).

Nenagh

Sunday February 17

Young Buck (91+) began to stretch the field from the back straight and he overcame a mistake at the last to make a winning debut. He can develop into a fine staying chaser. Generator City (86+) was deserved his success after two narrow defeats, and won quite cosily. Shanacoole (88) was being strongly pressed by the mare Whatsdastory (83x) when that rival crashed out, leaving him to return alone.

Cloudy Morning (106) is a natural stayer who was at his best around t his big galloping course. Loughrask Breeze (78+) was r idden to c hase t he leaders into the straight, however she stayed on best of all to defeat the favourite. A Ton Nom (85+) was returning from over four years on the sidelines when appearing at Ballinaboola a fortnight ago, and he won going away in the manner of a horse who can win again this season.

Action from the four-year-old maiden at Punchestown won by Power Of Pause and Mark O’Hare (right)

Lalor makes successful return winning with Cloudy Morning SIX weeks after giving birth to daughter Alex, Liz Lalor made a winning return to the saddle on her first ride back. She landed the Connollys Red Mills ladies’ open on Cloudy Morning, her 100th success between the flags. Trained by the in-form Declan Queally and owned by Michael O’Donovan, the eight-time winner displayed his usual game attitude to come home two lengths clear of the favourite BL Swagger. “Liz was so good on the horse; it’s unbelievable and that’s absolutely brilliant for her! We’ll aim this lad at similar types of lesser opens for the season,” said the successful Waterford trainer. Tom Hamilton is enjoying a fruitful link-up with trainer Shark Hanlon and the pair combined to take the five-year-old geldings’ maiden with Young Buck. Subject to plenty of market support, the TJ McDonald and Rachael O’Neill-owned debutant never caused his connections any concern as he posted a fine frontrunning performance to record a comfortable five-length success over Jack Hackett. Hanlon, saddling his sixth winner of the season, said: “He could be one of the best I’ve had. I’m looking for a horse to replace Hidden Cyclone and I would love to keep him the yard.”

Yo u n g B u c k put up an impressive per for mance, making much of the running before surviving a slight scare at the last to win by five lengths

Luke Murphy brought his season’s tally to 12 when steering home a double from four rides on the day. The Wexford jockey got off the mark in the Carey Glass winner of one on Shanacoole, who was the only finisher in the dramatic six-runner contest. The six-year-old was following up his maiden success three weeks ago at Dungarvan. Benefiting from a patient ride, the son of Oscar saw the favourite Saint Benedict exit four-out, before pulling clear in the home straight with Whatsdastory. The pair fought out a thrilling finish before the latter came to grief at the final fence, leaving Shanacoole to come home alone. Successful trainer Colin Motherway will now aim the bay at a winners of two, before possibly moving to a hunter chase. The lightly raced A Ton Nom brought up the double for Murphy

in the concluding Millerect Ltd older geldings’ maiden in the colours of Der vla and Peter Cogan. After making his debut as a four-year-old, he was off the track for 1,520 days before unseating on his reappearance at Ballinaboola earlier this month. The nine-year-old made no mistake on his second start for cur ren t co n n e ct i o n s whe n returning a five-length winner, having never been too far away from the lead. Verticalpebble threw down a strong challenge in the home straight, but ultimately filled the runners-up spot for the third consecutive occasion. “That’s absolutely fantastic, I think he must be the best nineyear-old maiden in the country! We’ll look for a winner of one now,” said trainer Alan Donoghue. Aaron Murphy did the steering on Generator City, who landed a well-deserved victory in the Tattersalls Ireland six-year-old geldings’ maiden. He was not winning out of turn, having previously been beaten by a head at Belharbour. The dark bay was getting off the mark at the fifth time of asking for owner John Byrne and made much of the running before coming home three lengths clear of Exit Eleven.

Connections may look to supplement this success in a winners’ race and the winning trainer Ciaran Murphy said: “ We’re delighted. We were confident as he had just been chinned twice. He’s improving every week and the owners have been very patient, so I’m delighted he got the job done.” Clare trainer Brian McMahon has been doing well with a small team of horses under rules and looks to have a nice mare on his hands in Loughrask Breeze, who took the local trainers mares’ maiden. The f ive-year-old made a promising debut when beaten 12 lengths at Belharbour earlier in the month and stepped up on that effort to win by a length-and-ahalf on her second start. Given a fine waiting ride by Eoin Mahon, the mare made relentless headway inside the final mile before battling on gamely to get the better of the favourite Forthegreatergood. Owned and bred by Thomas Vaughan, Loughrask Breeze, owned will now go for a winners’ race if she is not sold. McMahon said: “She came to me as a three-year-old and to be fair to her, the more work you give her the more work she takes. I’m very pleased for the owner and delighted for Eoin.

KILDARE AT PUNCHESTOWN SUNDAY

Power Of Pause steals the show on debut POWER OF PAUSE was marked down as a horse with a big future after an impressive debut victory. Buyers on both sides of the Irish Sea will be on the alert when the son of Doyen is sent to the sales by trainer Patrick Turley, who bought the horse as a store last year for €28,000 at the Land Rover Sale. Making his debut in a strong field in the Goffs four-year-old maiden under Mark O’Hare, he travelled well before powering clear in the home straight to beat Imperial Flem by six lengths. “ H e wa s g re a t . We we re confident enough to come for this race as he was doing everything easily at home,” said O’Hare. The Cavan Developments fiveyear-old maiden was a race dominated by Wexford riders and trainers as Colin Bowe improved on his second place in the day’s opener when Rainbow Chaser proved too strong for his 16 opponents. Under t he guidance of champion rider Barry O’Neill, the Stowaway gelding made use of his previous experience to clinch

Star performance

Power Of Pause is a name which went in many notebooks after he made an impressive debut to win one of the final 2m4f maidens of the season

a one-and-a-half-length victory over the Donnachadh Doyletrained The Strap Man, as jockey Jordan Gainford was again forced to settle for second place. Winning owner Larry Dunne also enjoyed success with Bowe in points last season when Pogue landed the spoils in the five-andsix-year-old geldings’ maiden at Oldcastle, a horse that was subsequently sold to Donald McCain for €100,000 and has since finished third on his hurdles debut at Bangor in December. Bowe said: “He’s been very unlucky so far. He got pushed out through a wing the first day and then made a bad mistake the last day. Barry (O’Neill) said it was a good solid run and he is probably better than his form would show.”

There was further success for a Wexford combination when the Rob James-ridden Ted won the Dublin Products Ltd older geldings’ maiden for Liam Kenny. He was very fortunate to win, however, as the favourite Orpen Wells had the race at his mercy when crashing out at the last, leaving Ted to win by six lengths. “He has been knocking on the door a long time and has been there of thereabouts the whole time. He was very fortunate there, so we’ll go the winner of one route, but it’s a great day for the horse and Dad, who bred him,” said owner Lorcan Higgins. Some Are Lucky had a quick turnaround this week when he followed up his Oldtown success wit h a win in t he Mongey Communications open for novice riders, landing his second success in seven days. The Sam Curling-trained gelding beat Pat Doyle ’s Samanntom by four lengths under Gerry Spain to record his fourth success of the season. “There’s not much on the cards for him in March, so we might

sneak an entry into Cheltenham for him. He deserves it, but whether he goes or not remains to be seen, as we might wait for something a bit later in the spring,” said the winning rider. Shane Byrne continued his successful season with mares when Thunder Dragon comfortably denied Bannixtown Glory in the Jacqueline McManus Solicitors five-year-old and upwards mares’ maiden. This was the daughter of Kalanisi’s second run in the colours of owner Peter Byrne having finished eighth on her debut at Dungarvan in January. Winning trainer Shane Byrne said: “I gave her a spin around Dungarvan for the experience and she blew up coming to the last, but it really sharpened her up. She had loads left in the locker today and I think she is a proper mare with a lovely pedigree.” Peter Maher landed the Quinns of Baltinglass Farmers Hunt race for the fourth consecutive year, with the Tiernan Roche-ridden Change Your Story. After pulling up on his only

Rainbow Chaser (yellow) chases Brief Ambition at Punchestown

start this season at Tattersalls Farm in December, the son of Dubai Destination won by two and a half lengths. The favourite Enniskillen, who

won the last three runnings for Maher, had to settle for third. Maher said: “He did it well there though and he’ll now go for the Tetretema.”

ENTRIES have a reference number to the horse’s last run, form figures (latest on right), owner, handler and exclusive rating (same scale as rules RPR). For penalised horses we suggest deducting half a point per pound (penalties not confirmed until race-day). Irish point-to-point entries are ordered as follows: 1 Horses whose owner has more than one entry, ordered alphabetically by: (a) owner, (b) horse. 2 Horses whose handler has more than one entry, ordered alphabetically by: (a) handler, (b) horse. 3 Remaining horses, ordered alphabetically. Abbreviations: B-brought down; b-baulked; C-carried out; d-disqualified; F-fell; P-pulled up; R-ran out; r-refused; S-slipped up; U-unseated rider. 26 243
