Derek O’Connor Straight to the Point

Acheson’s double dream of Cheltenham Gold Cup glory A

SK anyone who has just bought a young pointto-point horse about their ultimate ambitions and I guess most would put the Cheltenham Gold Cup at the top of their wish list. In their hearts, they would know that only a handful of horses can make it that far, but there’s no harm in dreaming. So what are the odds of an owner finding himself in a position in which two of his prize purchases have turned into potential Gold Cup horses within a week of each other? Massive, I reckon, but that’s what has happened to Brian Acheson, whose Robcour colours were carried to victory by the Mouse Morristrained Gentlemansgame in the Charlie Hall at Wetherby two Saturdays ago and by the Gordon Elliott-trained Gerri Colombe in last Saturday’s Ladbrokes Champion Chase at Down Royal. In a fascinating race that involved four top-class chasers who all started in point-to-points, Gerri Colombe battled his way to a neck defeat of Envoi Allen after looking beaten at the last. I thought it was a terrific performance by a horse having his first race out of novice company. Gerri Colombe won for Colin Bowe at Lingstown on the eve of the Cheltenham Festival in 2020 and was knocked down to Mags O’Toole at the Tattersalls festival sale just four days later for £240,000. Eight months later Mags had the winning bid of €250,000 when Gentlemansgame was sold in the week after winning for Donnchadh Doyle at Curraghmore. If all continues to go well this pair of Robcour seven-year-olds are going to be big players in top staying chases for several seasons to come. The Gold Cup is the ultimate but let’s not forget we can look forward to seeing them competing for the big prizes on offer nearer to home at Leopardstown and Punchestown. It’s great to see two home-grown staying chasers developing so well. Several other point-to-point graduates featured among Gordon Elliott’s incredible 11-winner tally at Down Royal. years ago, looked like a smart chasing recruit in winning Friday’s beginners’ chase. Galway Plate hero Ash Tree Meadow beat his only rival in the Grade 2 chase. He’s another who started off with Donnchadh Doyle. So did Magic Tricks, who won Saturday’s Listed handicap hurdle. I was lucky enough to get in on Gordon’s act by riding Down Memory Lane. I’ve ridden the Walk In The Park gelding to win his three races, the first a maiden at Umma House last autumn when he was with Jonathan Fogarty, then in a bumper at Fairyhouse in February, and in Saturday’s two-mile maiden hurdle. He travelled and jumped well and won with plenty to spare. It was a good weekend for youngsters by Walk In The Park since Mahon’s Way, an expensive purchase after winning at Lisronagh for Denis Hogan, won a maiden hurdle at Naas for Henry de Bromhead, and Patter Merchant made a winning debut for Gordon Elliott in the four-year-old geldings’ maiden at Dromahane on Sunday. Patter Merchant is a brother to Bowenspark, a promising five-yearold trained by Henry Daly. He won

two bumpers last season as well as finishing fourth in the Grade 2 bumper at Aintree and won in great style on his first hurdles start at Stratford recently.

Lane keeps Queally on track

A win for Artic Lane in the four-yearold maiden at Knockmullen House continued a brilliant run of form for the Declan Queally stable. Things got even better for the father-and-son team when the much-improved Beau’s Candle took the winners-ofone, this success coming eight days after his maiden win at Lisronagh. Declan jnr rode both winners, extending an unbeaten run in the saddle which started with his comeback on the veteran Wrong Direction in the open at Loughrea early last month. That was his first ride since February 2020, and he followed it up with a maiden win on Don’t Matter Now at Damma House last Sunday week. For the last couple of seasons, he has been involved more with the training side of things with his father on the family farm. They had their best campaign last season with 21

wins. This season the yard is flying, winning with nine of their 14 runners so far. Only Colin Bowe is ahead of the stable in the handlers’ list. Colin brought his score to 13 with wins for Wednesday Addams in a mares’ maiden at Knockmullen House and a dead-heat for Moon Over Mexico with the Noel Glynn-trained Wepushourlucksofar at Dromahane. Barry O’Neill, who shared the honours with Eoin Mahon in that thrilling finish, had a more

straightforward success on Ferns Lock in the open. He was in front from an early stage on the David Christie-trained gelding, who won easily from Dinny Lacey, a horse with a lot of track experience and a hunter chase winner last season, although yet to win in the point-to-point field. Ferns Lock is only six and remains unbeaten in four appearances in points. He started off with a Lisronagh win for Peter Flood two seasons ago before joining the Christie team. Last season he won three of his four hunter-chase starts, beating two top performers, Its On The Line at Fairyhouse and Billaway at Thurles, before landing the Tetratema at Gowran in a canter. For some reason, his jumping let him down at Fairyhouse on his final start, so it was good to see him produce such a polished display on his seasonal debut. He’s an exciting young horse.

IN FOCUS John O’Leary (below) on his partnership with Sam Curling and owning Le Feline

I

AM in my third season of owning horses with Sam Curling and the plan starting off was to try to find a horse who would be consistent and would give us a good few days out. Thankfully for me, he found La Feline. She has already given us some great days out and it was nice to see her start off her new season so well at Lisronagh. She’s been the champion mare for the past two seasons but we were probably slightly concerned going into Lisronagh as to whether she might have needed the run. That wasn’t the case; she ran very well and we were very happy with her win. I can’t speak highly enough of Correna Bowe and Liam Kelly, who work for Sam and who look after her so well. La Feline can be a bit fussy sometimes and gets a bit agitated but they have a fantastic way with her. She’s always in top-class form when she’s ready to race thanks to them. Over the past two years Derek O’Connor has done a fantastic job riding her. He knows when to push the

‘I have never met a man who is so dedicated to his profession: the man eats, sleeps and drinks horses’ button and he got the answer we all wanted when we pushed it at Lisronagh. Speaking to Sam and Derek after the race, they feel she’s better when she’s that bit fresher, so the plan will probably be to run her a bit less this season and stick to mares’ open races. I always had a keen interest in racing but unfortunately up until recent years I had never been in a position to own horses. I met Sam through a mutual friend. We had a chat, he listened to what I was hoping to get out of ownership and we seem to work well together. I thoroughly enjoy going to the sales and looking at the horses. I try to get to as many of the sales as I can but it’s very much Sam who picks out the

horses and decides the type of horse to buy. He has a fantastic eye for good horses and we have been very lucky together. We had some good results in maidens last year with the likes of Boston Boy, Cobra Queen and Micro Millions. I have ten horses in training this year. La Feline is the horse to give us some great days out and the others will hopefully do the business as four-year-olds and they will be sold. My company, SE Systems,

would probably be the largest deliverer of energy-efficient systems in the country. We are a procured contractor to the Sustainability Authority of Ireland and every local authority in the country. We are also a strategic partner to the likes of Microsoft, Bus Eireann, ESB Smart Energy Services, managing grant applications for them. There are many opportunities in this space at the moment. It’s probably the fastest growing industry in the

country and maybe worldwide with climate change, so it’s a very busy working week, but it’s great to have the outlet of the horses at the weekend. We do a number of different sponsorships and thankfully the opportunity came up to sponsor Sam’s stable. It gives us great exposure across the country; we are very proud of our brand and even prouder to be associated with Sam. He has a fantastic work ethic. I’ve never met a man who is so dedicated to his profession: the man eats, sleeps and drinks horses. He is constantly looking at different ways to improve the facilities and how he trains the horses. We have had some great days with La Feline, but that latest win in Lisronagh would

NEWS AND VIEWS

probably stand out the most so far. We had been unsure of what to expect from her beforehand, but she showed her quality and ability to win by 15 lengths. She was probably a bit lucky to win by that far, with the other horse falling at the last, but it was a day that really stands out for me of all her wins. She has been highly consistent throughout the time I’ve been associated with her as she’s never finished out of the first three in that time. That is a really consistent record for any horse to have; it’s phenomenal. Hopefully, there are still many more good days to come with her. JOHN O’LEARY WAS TALKING TO EOGHAIN WARD

Champion Chase one-two a credit to Bowe

L AST Saturday’s Ladbrokes Champion Chase will have made pleasant viewing for reigning champion handler Colin Bowe, as a pair of his f o r m e r p o i n t- t o -p o i n t e r s fought out the finish of the opening Grade 1 of the season. Gerri Colombe, a debut fouryear-old maiden winner at Lingstown in March 2020 for Bowe’s Milestone Stables, gained his fourth success in Grade 1 company when denying Envoi Allen, a fouryear-old maiden winner at Ballinaboola two years earlier, who would have been a backto-back winner of the Down Royal feature but for his neck defeat. The undercard provided a similarly strong set of results for ex-pointers, with Ash Tree Meadow, a Fairyhouse maiden winner for Donnchadh Doyle, landing a Grade 2 chase, with Doyle also responsible for supplying the Listed handicap hurdle winner on the card with his Borris House runner-up Magic Tricks. After 130 track successes during the month of October, those Down Royal feature-race victories have formed part of a strong start to November with

Irish pointers ready for Cheltenham sale

The first sale this season of Irish point-to-point horses takes place at Cheltenham on F r i d a y a t t h e Ta t t e r s a l l s November sale. The 47-lot sale is heavily

dominated by horses with recent point-to-point form from this side of the Irish Sea, with Irish-consigned horses accounting for 40 of those lots, 26 of which are four-year-olds. While a number of highprofile maiden winners from recent weeks have already c ha n g e d ha n d s p r i vat e l y , Friday’s sale will supply the first litmus test as to how the

demand for this season’s crop of point-to-pointers stacks up leading into the months ahead. Twelve months ago, Irish point-to-point horses amassed over £3.5 million at this sale, with public auctions last season generating more than £33m, highlighting the value of the sector. That revenue is continually reinvested, evidenced in the

result of last Sunday’s action at Dromahane, where the first three horses home in the fouryear-old geldings’ maiden had been through the store sales for an average price of €105,000.

Heavy rain delays start of hunter-chase season

After 20mm of rain on Sunday night left the course at Fairyhouse waterlogged, yesterday’s

scheduled fixture was cancelled, delaying the start of the hunter-chase season. A field of just five runners, headed by the David Christietrained pairing of Ask D’Man and Global Assembly, was declared for the first hunter chase of the season, in what was a disappointing start to the new campaign. First introduced in 2020, the race has been poorly supported with only four runners in 2021 and six last year. It was a similar case with the point-to-point bumper at the end of the card, which had attracted a field of six. With fewer than 20 point-topoint fixtures having taken place this season, it is unsurprising the point-to-point bumper looked set to be dominated by two maiden winners from last season in D B Cooper and Jeroboam Machin. That pair had changed hands after maiden victories in the spring and were set to represent leading trainers Gordon Elliott and Emmet Mullins respectively, which brings into question the value of these races, with that pair able to start their seasons in traditional bumpers.

WEEKEND REPORTS

DUHALLOW AT DROMAHANE SUNDAY

Top hunter chaser Ferns Lock picks up where he left off last season THE David Christie-trained Ferns Lock lit up the opening fixture of the season on the Cork-Waterford circuit with a bloodless success on his return in the Singleton’s SuperValu open for non-Graded winners. The six-year-old, youngest participant in the 13-runner field, was sent to the front after the first fence from where last season’s three-time hunter chase winner developed a lovely rhythm. The victorious son of Telescope clearly had too many aces for the pursuing The Bosses Oscar from two out and he bounded clear approaching the bypassed final fence to account for Dinny Lacey by a widening eight and a half lengths. There was an inquiry called after the runners were waved around the incorrect side of the bypassed last fence on the

second circuit, but the stewards allowed the result to stand. “There’s loads to work on as he was car r ying plent y of weight today,” Christie said. “That’s tough ground out there for a horse who’s only 85 per cent fit and he’ll hopefully now go for the Down Royal hunter chase over Christmas.” Ferns Lock’s partner, Barry O’Neill, was the only rider to depart with two winners after dead-heating on Colin Bowe’s Moon Over Mexico with the Noel Glynn-trained Wepushourlucksofar, the mount of Eoin Mahon, in the Dairygold & Pegus Horse Feeds five-yearold geldings’ maiden. Seasonal debutant Wepushourlucksofar, a creditable sixth on the final of his two starts last season at Dromahane, tried to make all, but he was fractionally headed by recent Moira

runner-up Moon Over Mexico at the last. The latter made a mistake, however, leaving the fasterlanding Wepushourlucksofar to take the lead. But Moon Over Mexico got up on the line to force a dead-heat. “I’m not falling in love with them any more like I used to and he’ll now go to the sales,” Glynn said. A forthcoming sale is also likely to feature for Moon Over Mexico, a half-brother to his handler’s recent Tattersalls four-year-old mares’ maiden winner Honky Tonk Highway.

Gordon Elliott, having had a phenomenal few days by saddling 11 winners at the Down Royal weekend fixture, sent out Patter Merchant to make a victorious debut under Harry Swan in the Tattersalls NH four-year-old geldings’ maiden. The Walk In The Park-sired Patter Merchant, a brother to Henry Daly’s three-time track winner Bowenspark, led after two out. Although dr ift ing r ighthanded in the closing stages, he beat Trasna Na Pairce by one and a half lengths. “He’s a nice horse who has always been doing everything

right at home,” stable representative Catriona Bolger said of the €75,000 Goffs Land Rover sale graduate. The meeting opened with a c l e a rc u t s u c c e s s f o r Ga r y Murphy’s newcomer Northern Air in the Coral Gold Cup Sale by Goffs four-year-old mares’ maiden. T h e Ve n d a n g e u r - s i r e d N o r t h e r n A i r, o w n e d b y Murphy’s partner Cassie Parle with Benny and Jenny Walsh, picked up the running three out to beat Neon Diamond by four lengths under Shane O’Rourke. David O’Brien’s newcomer Roxhill Roise showed a useful turn of foot for Shane Cavanagh

to oblige in the Committee five-year-old mares’ maiden. The patiently-ridden halfsister to Jonjo O’Neill’s dual bumper winner Pressure Sensitive led after the secondlast to beat Theatre Light by five lengths in the colours of the Ballyragget-based Cairde Gaoil Syndicate. The Turlough O’Connortrained-and-ridden Nibbles put his hurdles experience to good use by powering clear b e f o re t w o o u t t o s e e o f f American Hero in the Charles J O’Connor Solicitors, Fergus O’Connor & Eugene O’Sullivan five-year-old-and-upwards adjacent hunts maiden.

Nibbles, a creditable fifth off a mark of 91 in a Clonmel handicap hurdle in February, could now contest a hunter chase.

Born Braver is driven home by John Barry to land the five-year-old geldings’ maiden for trainer Claire O’Connell and owner Paul O’Sullivan

D E C L A N Q U E A L LY maintained his 100 per cent strikerate in the saddle for the season with a Knockmullen House double. The Waterford rider had not ridden in point-to-points for more than three and a half years before his return at Loughrea last month having turned professional in 2020, and this brace brought his tally to four since his return. His latest victor y, in the Cooney Furlong winners-ofone, was easily achieved as he guided Beau’s Candle to an all-the-way 16-length success, as the eight-year-old swiftly backed up his Lisronagh maiden victory from eight days earlier. “That’s four wins from four rides since I returned to the saddle; it’s all downhill from here!” said Queally. “I said I wouldn’t mess around. “He’s a hardy horse who has been around the block. wanted to stretch the rest of them out and see if there were chinks in the armour of the younger horses. “He’ll go for another winners’ race in a couple of weeks and we’ll keep him point-to-pointing.” Queally had opene d his account for the afternoon on another horse trained by his father and namesake when Artic Lane landed the Tattersalls NH & Ballywalter Farms f o u r- y e a r- o l d g e l d i n g s’ maiden. No match for Nowwhatdo youthink on his debut at Umma House, the Philip Murphy-owned bay put his experience to good use as he

had the measure of Big Mike from the last to win by eight lengths, and could now be sold. New owners are likely also to b e f o u n d f o r We d n e s d a y Addams. Like Artic Lane, she wa s a w i n n e r w i t h re c e nt placed Umma House form. The Telescope mare prevailed in a tight finish to the White Horse Stud four-year-old mares’ maiden. Sp o r t i n g t h e c o l o u r s o f Meath-based owner Rebecca Surman, the British-bred grey had been impeded on the run-in at the Westmeath venue last month, but that experience stood her in good stead as Rob James guided her to a narrow defeat of Santapietra. “I picked her up as a foal at the November Sales, as she walked well,” Surman said. “Her brother John The Spark won at Moira last month, so that was good. “I’m delighted now and just a bit overwhelmed. I’ll probably

sell her now to pay off a few bills.” Claire O’Connell also made the successful trip from Meath as she saddled Born Braver, a horse owned by her husband Paul O’Sullivan, to land the Coral Gold Cup Sale by Goffs f i ve - ye a r- o l d g e l d i ng s’ maiden. Having posted a career best w h e n f i n i s h i n g s e c o n d at Tattersalls a fortnight earlier, the experienced son of Court Cave justified his position as one of three market leaders by beating the Loughrea runner-up Scout Master by three lengths in the hands of John Barry. “We thought a lot of him when he slipped up on his debut in Dromahane last year and got himself injured somewhere. I couldn’t figure it out and I should have left him off after that, but I didn’t,” O’Connell said. “This is the sixth generation

of the family that we have bred. I might have to sell this fella because all the rest of them are fillies.” Jimmybrien was the second Ta t t e r s a l l s r u n n e r- u p t o triumph on the card after finishing 15 lengths adrift of Ballywalter in an unplaced maiden there. He went one place better in taking The Pa d d o c k s o l d e r g e l d i n g s’ maiden for the father-anddaughter team of trainer Michael and jockey Hannah Phillips. Bright Sunrise could have the Gain final as her big target this season after she ran out a popular local winner of the Gain Equine Nutrition fiveyear-old and upwards mares’ maiden. Trained by Sue O’Gorman, daughter of the fixture secretary Brigid, the Ask gelding beat Ciakat by five lengths in the colours of popular ownerbreeder Jim Mernagh.

ENTRIES have a reference number to the horse’s last run, form figures (latest on right), owner, handler and exclusive rating (same scale as rules RPR). For penalised horses we suggest deducting half a point per pound (penalties not confirmed until race-day). Irish point-to-point entries are ordered as follows: 1 Horses whose owner has more than one entry, ordered alphabetically by: (a) owner, (b) horse. 2 Horses whose handler has more than one entry, ordered alphabetically by: (a) handler, (b) horse. 3 Remaining horses, ordered alphabetically. Abbreviations: B-brought down; b-baulked; C-carried out; d-disqualified; F-fell; P-pulled up; R-ran out; r-refused; S-slipped up; U-unseated rider. 11 591 12 13 67
