Billaway again set to lead Irish hunter chase Cheltenham team

I

RISH fortunes in what is now the St James’s Place Hunter Chase have not been great in recent years. After a six-year spell of domination between Zemsky in 2011 and On The Fringe scoring for the second time in 2016, only It Came To Pass has triumphed since, a memorable winner for Eugene and Maxine O’Sullivan two years ago, coming home ten lengths clear of the Willie Mullins-trained Billaway. Last March Billaway was well fancied to go one better. He went very close but had to settle for second behind Porlock Bay. Fifth in the Aintree Foxhunter and beaten a nose by the Paul Nichollstrained Bob And Co in the Champion Hunter Chase at Punchestown, Billaway looked rusty when no match for Winged Leader at Thurles last month. He needed to give a good performance last Saturday, when bidding to win the hunter chase at Naas for the third year in a row. Sure enough, he got the job done, but the opposition was weak and the race didn’t tell us anything new. You wouldn’t get carried away with the form. Second place went to his stablemate Good Bye Sam, a French import who was beaten by a newcomer in a maiden at Aghabullogue on his Irish debut. I’m not convinced it will be third time lucky for Billaway at Cheltenham, but the run should help to bring him closer to peak condition for next month, and if you’re a follower of trends he has one thing going for him: he’s now a ten-yearold, and the race has been won by a horse of double-digit age for seven years in a row. Winged Leader is an eight-year-old and has made fine progress under David Christie’s care. After being a promising horse in 2019 and 2020, he experienced a few reverses in the early part of last year. He got his campaign back on track with a Tramore win last April and has done everything right since. I was impressed by the manner of his win from Billaway at Thurles. He should give a good account of himself at Cheltenham. There’s not much strength in depth to the Irish challenge. I’m hopeful Sam Curling’s Aloneamongmillions, who is unbeaten in six starts in points, will make it there.

Sky Pirate, who won last season’s Grand Annual for Jonjo O’Neill. Saturday’s four-year-old maiden at Kirkistown also produced a good winner. Broughshane, a Mahler gelding ridden by Noel McParlan for trainer Ger Quinn, who picked up experience in Britain and developed his career further under with Colin McKeever’s expert tutelage Broughshane is owned by Philip McBurney who has invested in topclass facilities at his Caherty Stables, near Ballymena. This is a team set to become a big force on the Northern Irish scene.

Lalor deserves her place in the record books

Willmount and Rob James (near side) take the last alongside Shannon Royale at Comea

He looked a good prospect when I rode him to win the Tetratema Cup at Gowran two seasons ago but was below his best in two races won by Billaway last season. Sam produced him in good shape to win at Turtulla last month. He may need to run and win again to get the go-ahead to travel.

Six weekend winners for title-chasing James

After a brilliant weekend for Rob James, who rode trebles at Kirkistown on Saturday and at the Scarteen fixture at Comea on Sunday, it looks as though Barry O’Neill could have a battle on his hands in his bid to win the riders’ title for the sixth year in a row. There’s a long way to go but Rob has closed the gap to just one, 26-27. Both riders teamed up successfully with Colin Bowe on Sunday. Rob

rode Willmount, a son of Blue Bresil, to take the four-year-old maiden at Comea, a new track which was well received by the riders. The old Kilfeacle track had a good reputation, and it was a nice boost

‘Liz Lalor has always been hardworking and dedicted and was back riding winners little more than a month after the birth of her daughter’

for the organisers that the new venue was inaugurated with a win for an above-average youngster. A €46,000 purchase from Luke Barry’s Manister House Stud at the Goffs Land Rover sale, Willmount quickened well to beat the Denis Murphy-trained Shannon Royale. At Knockanard, Barry rode Captain Teague to an impressive success. Knockanard is known as a stiff track, and even over the 2m4f of this race you need a horse who stays well. By Doyen out of the Alan King-trained bumper and hurdles winner Dancingwithbubbles, this one cost €70,000 at the Land Rover sale and is a half-brother to

Liz Lalor broke one of the longeststanding records in Irish racing on Sunday, overtaking the 109 point-topoint winners ridden by Helen Bryce-Smith between 1959 and 1974. Liz has had a great career over the past two decades. She has been a multiple champion at a time when there have been many excellent lady riders on the scene. She has played a big part in the success story of the family breeding operation based around the Carrigeensharragh family. She has enjoyed several big days against the professionals, notably on the talented Carrigeen Kalmia. She rode 11 point-to-point winners on champion mare Carrigeen Liz has always been hardworking and dedicated. In 2019 she was back riding winners little more than a month after the birth of her daughter. Liz thoroughly deserves her place in history but this is also a good time to reflect on the achievements of Helen Bryce-Smith, who rode in point-to-points at a time when female riders had to battle against a lot of prejudice. Helen was one of the main campaigners along with my late mother, Jean Moore, when fighting a battle with the Turf Club for the right to ride against the men in bumpers. She was associated with Still William, one of the great old-school point-topoint horses, riding him to 34 wins. Mother of champion Flat rider Declan McDonogh, she was a brilliant horsewoman and by all accounts an incredibly brave and determined competitor. She won’t be forgotten, even though her record has now been broken.

TALENT SPOTTER Gerald Quinn talks about how he has always wanted to get into training point-to-pointers

I

T WAS a big moment to train my first four-yearold maiden winner when Broughshane was so impressive at Kirkistown on Saturday. I’d always wanted to get involved in training point-topointers but it’s been a long road getting here. I started pony racing when I was 13 and kept at that until I was 15 when I went over to England for one month’s work experience with Jonjo O’Neill. I was wet behind the ears going over – I’d just finished school and didn’t have much experience – but I didn’t come back for another seven years as Jonjo offered me the chance to turn conditional when I was 16, and I just couldn’t refuse that. I stayed with him for three years and then I spent some time with Tom George, a spell freelancing, and I also rode for Claire Dyson for three years before I left, which was my most successful spell. I rode 12 winners for Claire, but the rides were starting to dry up over there when I broke my wrist. When that happened

‘Philip McBurney has invested a lot and is not cutting corners’ I just took a notion that I’d had enough in England and wanted to come home. I always knew I would return home. It was always part of my plan to come back and get into training point-to-pointers, and I suppose the time was right after such a long spell in England. I was talking to Graham McKeever when I came home and he mentioned that his father was looking for someone, so I went up and met Colin [McKeever] and Wilson [Dennison], and I started with them the following Monday morning. I was there for the next eight years.

I learned most of what I know now from my time working with Colin; he was a huge help to me. I’d always been interested in the breeding side of racing but I loved working with young horses during my time with Colin. I enjoyed breaking them in, educating them, teaching them to jump, and it was something that I had been doing in the evenings when I was working for Colin and Wilson. I started out doing a few horses at home for Kieran McKay, a man from Cushendun, County Antrim. It was tough in the evenings during the winter but it was a

start using all the fields around home, trespassing on other people’s ground at the start, and then with the money I was getting for training the horses I built a sand arena and got myself a walker and put in a small gallop. The opportunity came up last year to train for Philip McBurney (left) and I jumped at the chance. Philip previously had horses in training with Gordon Elliott, but he’s now created a purpose-built training yard in the middle of Broughshane point-to-point course. We have a two-and-a-halffurlong round gallop with a two-furlong chute, there are fences out on the course and

we train around it, and we also have a two-furlong fibre schooling strip with hurdles on it. They really are state-of-theart facilities and Ian Ferguson is buying top-class horses for Philip. All the horses are for selling on and we have had some good results already. Enki Flacke (left, with Quinn and jockey Noel McParlan) was one of my first horses for Philip and he won a bumper at Perth last summer. Gordon Elliott bought him and then I had Crebilly finish third at Kirkistown in November. Jonjo O’Neill bought him for £100,000, so

NEWS AND VIEWS

things have gone full circle with Jonjo. We have a great bunch of four-year-olds for this year, with Broughshane the first of them to run. He stood out from day one. He was a very straightforward horse and always did everything we asked of him. There was a lot of talk about some of the Wexford horses beforehand on Saturday – Harley Dunne, Colin Bowe, Cormac Doyle – all their horses seemed to be fancied, but he jumped around and ran as well as we expected. His homework had always been that good, but we were still a bit blown away with just how good he was. My phone hasn’t stopped since, there has been a lot of interest in him, so we’ll see how he comes out of the race before deciding on a sale, but we couldn’t have asked for a better start to the year. None of this would have been possible if it wasn’t for Philip. He has invested a lot into this and is certainly not cutting any corners. He is a great man to work for He’s been very encouraging since day one, so I’m delighted to get these results for him and the team. Hopefully, this is just the start of things to come. Special moment for Lalor on home turf

IT’S DOUBTFUL Helen BryceSmith expected her record 109 victories by a female rider in the Irish pointing field to remain untouched for almost five decades. The longevity of that record makes the achievement of Liz Lalor all the more meritorious as she raised the bar with her 110th victory between the flags at Comea on Sunday, almost 23 years after her first success in a Kinsale open in May 1999. In the years since, Lalor also became just the third female rider to break the 100-winner barrier at Nenagh in 2019, with her subsequent wins taking her above Rosemary Rooney and now Bryce-Smith, while she also holds the record for the greatest number of ladies’ titles successes, which stands at eight. The achievement of recording the milestone success in her home county and on Read To Return, a horse trained by her partner Tom Ke a t i n g , a d d e d a s p e c i a l dimension to Lalor’s victory as she was surrounded by wellwishers after the success. Regional secretary Frankie Ward was on hand at Comea to pay her tribute to Lalor in a swiftly arranged presentation that was conducted by

commentator Ger Hannon, with Aileen Persse on hand to present Lalor with a hamper on b e ha l f o f B o t a n i ca’s S e a n Cooney.

Some Man maintains Christie’s monopoly

The record of trainer David Christie and his open performers, at Kirkistown in particular, was enhanced on Saturday with the 20-length victory of the Ray Nicholasowned Some Man. A second victory at the venue this season for the nine-yearold ensured the Fermanagh trainer has kept a tight grip on open lightweight prizes there, having saddled the winner of six of the last seven such races staged at the track. That run of success, stretching to March 2019, is particularly notable given it incorporates five individual horses: Horendus Hulabaloo, Dylrow, Winged Leader, On The Sod and now Some Man. Next month the North Down Foxhounds stage the third of their three fixtures this season at Kirkistown, a card which features the novice riders open, the only race there to have escaped Christie’s grasp during that winning run. Last May, Creadon Grae beat

Grandero Bello first to land £5,000 sales bonus

Grandero Bello became the first horse to claim the ThoroughBid ‘Point 2 Rules’ bonus when he made a winning rules debut for new connections in the maiden hurdle at Punchestown on Sunday. The newly launched onlineonly sales house has put up a £5,000 bonus for all point-topoint graduates of their sales this season who go on to win on their first start under rules for new connections. Mean Queen crowned champion in the US

Honeysuckle is not the only former point-to-point mare setting the racing world alight on the track. Triple Grade 1 winner The Mean Queen created a novel piece of history for an e x-p o i n t e r w h e n s h e w a s crowned champion steeplechas er at last w e ek ’s 51st Eclipse Awards at Santa Anita in California, becoming the first mare to win that prize since 1975. The daughter of Doyen has enjoyed a rapid rise through the ranks in the US after her p o i n t- t o -p o i n t s u c c e s s at Loughanmore in October 2020, recording the first of her three Grade 1 victories last year, ten months on from her initial point success at the County Antrim venue.

WEEKEND REPORTS

NORTH DOWN AT KIRKISTOWN SATURDAY

Some Man shows Christie remains the open master DAVID CHRISTIE has farmed open races at Kirkistown in recent years and that continued on Saturday when Some Man claimed his second success at the venue on the Ards peninsula with a 20-length victory in the Greenville Electrical open. Patiently ridden by regular partner Rob James, the nineyear-old was delivered at the penultimate fence and, once leaving the back straight, there was only one outcome as he easily dismissed the challenge of Stuart Crawford’s three-time open winner Poli Roi. “He was bouncing going to the start,” James said. “David Christie said he was in great form and he had him in tip-top shape coming here. When the ground suits him and he’s on song, it takes a good one to beat him.” Some Man was part of a h a t- t r i c k f o r Ja m e s a s h e teamed up with Value Till Dawn for a rare ride for the County Carlow trainer Shark Hanlon in the Millbank mares’ maiden.

The Dylan Thomas mare had blotted her copybook when running out before the last in dramatic fashion at Tyrella last month, however, she made amends here when striding on as the runners exited the back straight. On just her third start of the campaign after three years on the sidelines, the Monbeg Syndicate-owned Jeremy mare appeared to have returned to the level of that early promise in beating the wide-margin Tyrella winner Tamlaght Eyes by an eyecatching 18 lengths. Wexford native James was one of two riders who enjoyed multiple successes on the card, a s N o e l M c Pa r l a n r o d e a double in the opening and closing races, initiated in impressive fashion by Broughshane in the Dennison Commercials four-year-old maiden. A first four-year-old maiden winner for rider-turned-trainer Gerald Quinn, the Philip McBurney-owned gelding is trained at McBurney’s impressive facilities at the centre of the point-to-point course in Broughshane. “I rode him six weeks ago and I thought he was a really nice

horse,” McParlan said. “I knew it would take a serious horse to beat him. He did everything well, he jumped and travelled everywhere for me.” The three-time regional champion then joined forces w i th L ougha n m o re- b a s e d Colin McKeever to claim the Wilsons Auctions older maiden with Iddergem, their first success together since the ill-fated Flemenshill at

Oldtown five years ago. The experienced Youmzain gelding bounced back to the for m which had seen him beaten narrowly at Tattersalls in the autumn when defeating a much improved Dunboy Lad by eight lengths. “He ran a great race two runs ago at Tattersalls,” McKeever said. “We went back three weeks later and he couldn’t get around,”

SCARTEEN AT COMEA SUNDAY

‘It felt like it was never going to come’ – Liz Lalor LIZ LALOR made history at Comea when she landed her 110th victory in point-to-points to become the most successful female rider in the sport. The Tipperary native teamed u p w i t h R e a d To R e tu r n , trained by her partner Tom Keating, in the Tattersalls NH five-year-old geldings maiden. Our daughter Alex is here as well, so I couldn’t be happier.” One of the first to congratulate Lalor as she pulled up after the historic moment was fellow rider Rob James, who capped his own great weekend by repeating Saturday’s Kirkistown hat-trick starting with Willmount in the Goffs fouryear-old maiden. The newcomer had been due to make his debut at Oldtown the same afternoon but was quickly rerouted when that fixture fell victim to waterlogging. Patrick Ryan sent out his first winner between the flags since June 2013 when Barnaleen brought up the second leg of the James hat-trick in the Hanly Donnellan Auctioneers confined maiden. Having been tailed off in a Tipperary bumper last July, the five-year-old son of Imperial Monarch found an ideal opportunity on his pointing debut as he came from off the pace to beat an improved How’s Trix by a length.

“A lot of horses were threatening to do something and then disappointing. We’ve changed a lot since then and I’m just hoping it’s the start of a new season for us.” Peter Fahey is enjoying a memorable season with his team under rules and a rare foray into the pointing fields was rewarded with Sageburg County in the Tattersalls NH five-year-old geldings maiden.

A first runner between the flags since March 2020 for the Monasterevin operator, the Bernadette Leigh-owned Sageburg gelding made his move before the home straight in a tightly grouped field and Declan Lavery’s mount had built up just enough of an advant ag e t o h old of f t h e closing Speed Gang by a neck to make the perfect start to his career.

Killultagh Vic, winner of the 2015 Martin Pipe Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival for Willie Mullins, rolled back the years with his first victor y since December 2017 with a twoand-a-half-length victory in the Kirbys Pharmacy-Gerry Spain open. Sporting the colours of his l o n g s t a n d i n g ow n e r R o s e Boyd, the 13-year-old had gone close at Ballindenisk on his penultimate start to ensure his defeat of open debutant Crazywork De Vassy was not a surprise outcome. It was a third success of the season for the mother-anddaughter combination of Debbie and Emily Cody, contestants on the 2021 series of the RTE show Ireland’s Fittest Family. Carrying the colours of her Kilkenny trainer, who also bred the daughter of Ocovango, the w inning distance of Mikey Sweeney’s mount was enhanced by the final-fence departure of the pursuing Breezy Stand. However, she had seemed on top of the exchanges at that point. “This is a lovely mare who had a great run on her debut and came forward a lot from that,” her rider-turned-trainer said. “She’s as tough as old boots and showed that today. Captain Teague follows Ferny Hollow lead with impressive debut COLIN BOWE’S newcomer Captain Teague is a name to note after making an impressive entrance with an emphatic victory under reigning champion Barry O’Neill. Captain Teague disputed the running with Western General in the Coolagown Stud and Shinnicks Spar four-year-old maiden, until going for home on the stiff ascent from two-out. It was soon apparent Captain Teague was travelling the better and, although jumping out to his left at the last, the son of Doyen still beat The Ballyline Man by eight lengths, providing Bowe with an across-the-card double as he was also on the mark with Willmount at Comea. Bowe, who won this race with debutant Ferny Hollow in 2019 – the Cheltenham Champion Bumper winner the following year – acquired the half-brother of Jonjo O’Neill’s 2021 Grand Annual Chase winner Sky Pirate, for €70,000 at last year’s Tattersalls Ireland Derby sale. There was another County Wexford-trained winner when the Harley Dunne-owned and trained State Of Power landed a dramatic Rathbarry Stud and Tattersalls NH five-year-old geldings’ maiden. State Of Power, a fourth-lastfence faller on his debut at Dromahane in December, was always positioned at the head of affairs with Tiernan Power, and the son of Westerner still led when his two closest p u r s u e r s, Joy O f L i f e a n d Giovinco, exited at the last, leaving State Of Power to come home 50 lengths clear of Johnny Rose. “He’s a big staying type who jumps for fun and that’s why he’s here today,” Power said of the sales-bound State Of Power, a €16,000 purchase. Chris O’Donovan was the only rider to leave with two winners, the Shanballymore native initiating his brace courtesy of Declan Queally’s Fenno’s Storm in the Coolmore Grange Stud and Grove Stud open. Captain Teague had his rivals under pressure entering the home straight en route to an easy winning debut

although he seemed to have a battle on his plate when headed briefly by Macs Legend two out. However, the 11-yearold stayed on determinedly to account for fellow veteran Macs Legend by a neck. “He’s a very tough horse who stays all day and hopefully he’ll win another open,” Queally’s son Declan said of the Maurice Walsh-owned winner, who was recording his tenth pointing success to add to his three racecourse victories. O’Donovan completed his double on Michael Winters’ Clounts Glory in the Riordan’s SuperValu and AIB Fermoy mares’ winners-of-one. Clounts Glory, who finished third in a Clonmel maiden h u n t e r c h a s e l a s t Ma rc h , jumped into the lead two out to beat Bankoncarlo by two and a half lengths. “She’s a very tough mare who stays. We’ll run her in mares’ races and we might go for a hunter chase with her as well,” Winters said of Clounts Glory, owned by brothers Dan and Billy Horgan from Rathmore in County Kerry. Paul Cashman likes nothing more than having a winner at Knockanard, which isn’t surprising as he acts as one of the clerks of the course while operating from the adjacent Glenview Stud. He sent out Present Fair to collect the Glenview Stud and McCarthy Insurance adjacent maiden, a race he jointly sponsored. The one-eyed five-year-old Present Fair, a brother to Grade 2 m a r e s’ b u m p e r w i n n e r Darling Daughter, vindicated the promise of his most recent fourth place behind An Tobar at Ballvodock by benefiting from a well-judged pacesetting ride from James Murphy to beat the mare Blooming Fortune by three lengths. recently turned 20, continued his fine season by bringing Tom K e a t i n g ’s B a l l y v o d o c k runner-up Hattons Gardens from well off the pace to beat G re y Ma rk e t i n t h e G A I N Equine Nutrition and The Quays & Grill Bar Fermoy older maiden for novice riders. Keating was another to make his presence felt at both meetings as he also sent out Read To Return to win the fiveyear-old geldings’ maiden at Comea with Liz Lalor.

ENTRIES have a reference number to the horse’s last run, form figures (latest on right), owner, handler and exclusive rating (same scale as rules RPR). For penalised horses we suggest deducting half a point per pound (penalties not confirmed until race-day). Irish point-to-point entries are ordered as follows: 1 Horses whose owner has more than one entry, ordered alphabetically by: (a) owner, (b) horse. 2 Horses whose handler has more than one entry, ordered alphabetically by: (a) handler, (b) horse. 3 Remaining horses, ordered alphabetically. Abbreviations: B-brought down; b-baulked; C-carried out; d-disqualified; F-fell; P-pulled up; R-ran out; r-refused; S-slipped up; U-unseated rider.
