Billaway aiming to make it third time lucky at the festival

L

AST year’s Cheltenham Festival was all about Irish dominance. There were a few exceptions. The Prestbury Cup defeat for the home team would have been worse if Porlock Bay had not edged out the Willie Mullins-trained Billaway in the St James’s Place Hunter Chase. The season before last Billaway was no match for the O’Sullivan family’s It Came To Pass. Last April he lost out by a nose to the Paul Nicholls-trained Bob And Co at Punchestown. He has been a beaten favourite for all three of those championship races and again heads the market for Friday’s race. Can he go one better? I’m not sure, but there’s a recent trend in the race that favours him over a couple of the other main Irish challengers this time. He’s a tenyear-old. The event has been won by a horse of that age or one year older for the past seven years. You might think that’s normal enough for a big hunter chase. In fact, things were different in the Foxhunter between 2005 and 2014 when it was won only once by a horse who had reached doublefigures, Baby Run for the TwistonDavies team in 2010. The next year I rode the eight-yearold Zemsky to win for Ian Ferguson. He started another trend as the first of six consecutive Irish-trained winners of the race. Zemsky’s win and Liam Lennon’s success with Tammys Hill in 2014 advertised the strength of the point-to-point scene in Northern Ireland. This time pointing enthusiasts in the north will be hoping that one of the region’s leading handlers David Christie can win with either Winged Leader or Vaucelet. Winged Leader has won nine of his 15 starts in points and has four hunter chase wins to his name. The eight-year-old Winged Love gelding has really matured over the past 12 months and is unbeaten in five starts since last April. David has kept him fresh for his first visit to Cheltenham, and he looked in good shape when beating Billaway (who was making his seasonal debut) by 12 lengths at Thurles in January.

Billaway (far side) just loses out to Porlock Bay in last year’s Hunter Chase at the Cheltenham Festival

The year-younger Vaucelet was looking progressive before a reverse at Down Royal at Christmas. That leaves him with plenty to find. Lord Schnitzel has done well in points since joining Declan Queally

‘Winged Leader has really matured over the past 12 months. David has kept him fresh for his first visit to Cheltenham’

and deserves to take his chance, along with 2020 winner It Came To Pass and the Gordon Elliott-trained Mighty Stowaway. But Billaway and Winged Leader are the strongest Irish challengers. Billaway’s experience of the course is a major asset, and he’s a worthy favourite to go one better on his third attempt on the race I would rather judge him on his own merits than make too much of the fact that his stablemate Good Night Sam failed to take exploit a seemingly ideal opportunity in a maiden hunter chase at Thurles last Thursday. The six-year-old gelding, who had placed form over fences in France at four, looked in a different league to the opposition having finished

second to Billaway at Naas on his first racecourse start in Ireland. That performance suggested he could be a ready-made replacement for Billaway in due course. Maybe he will be, but he was a big disappointment this time, finishing only third behind the Sean Ahernetrained Along Long Story. The 33-1 winner has a mark over hurdles from his time with Declan Queally. His 94 rating may tempt connections to let him take his chance in a staying handicap at some stage. There was also hunter chase action on Saturday when Gowran staged the Tetratema Cup. Two previous winners of the race, Aloneamongmillions and Solomn Grundy, dominated the betting and the race itself. With the fourth-last omitted because of the ground and the last left out on the second and third

circuits because of damage to the fence, it wasn’t a very satisfactory event, and the field was reduced to four when the veteran Mac’s Legend went at the first. The 2020 winner Aloneamongmillions showed his toughness in winning for Sam Curling, with Pa King aboard. The nine-year old is unbeaten in six starts in Irish points (he fell in a race in Britain on the first race of his career) and has come back in good shape this year after last season’s campaign came to a premature end. This year I hope he gets a chance to take on the top hunters at Fairyhouse and Punchestown. Gowran’s point-to-point bumper also took place on Saturday, a race won in the recent past by high-class performers such as Yorkhill, Bob Olinger and Journey With Me. Donnchadh Doyle’s Monbeg Park, out of an unraced sister to the talented Hidden Cyclone, was strongly fancied on the strength of his debut win at Tattersalls Farm in November. In very testing conditions he was no match for the Oliver McKiernan-trained Kalanisi Star, a £65,000 purchase out of Alan Ahern’s yard after winning at Corbeagh House in December. He looked well worth the money in stretching away when Johnny Barry pressed the button. Lingstown was the only pointing venue to survive the weekend weather. Cormac Doyle produced a good winner of the four-year-old maiden, Barry The Butcher, a newcomer by Walk In The Park. He has a pedigree with strong Cheltenham Festival connections. His unraced dam is closely related to the 2019 Ballymore winner City Island, and comes from the family of Champion Hurdle winners Morley Street and Granville Again. I rode a promising mare Alfie’s Princess to win a maiden first time out for Ross O’Sullivan and Galway owner John Murphy. She is a halfsister to Glamorgan Duke who beat a high-quality field including Grand National hope Any Second Now in the Leopardstown Chase in 2020. There was plenty of incident in the banks race, which is always a popular spectacle at Lingstown. Loggan Lady jumped brilliantly for Timmy Love to land the spoils from Barry O’Neill’s mount Tech Talk. It’s good to see the great tradition of bank racing kept alive.

TALENT SPOTTER Tom Byrne (below) talks about his fresh approach to developing young thoroughbreds

M

Y FAMILY has a sports horse background, with showjumpers and event horses at home. That kept me busy as I was growing up and I competed up to two-star level. Racing was always there in the background though, as my uncle John Byrne kept thoroughbreds, but it wasn’t until I went to work for Jonathan Fogarty that I really caught the racing bug. I’d gone to the Tattersalls sales with my cousin Vincent who was friendly with Johnny, and he mentioned that he was on the lookout for someone to work in the yard. I’d just finished school and thought I wouldn’t mind giving it a go. I ended up staying four years with a little break when I went to Australia to play Aussie Rules football, but I learnt an awful lot from Johnny. In the back of my mind I knew I was always going to go training. It was just a matter of when.

‘I’ve taken a lot from football and adapted it to training horses’ I’d grown up with [point-topoint rider] Conor Moore and deciding to go out on my own really started from giving a hand to Conor and his father Denis with breaking horses. We’d always broken the horses my father bred at home and then when word got out that I was starting with thoroughbreds I was sent more and more breakers and pretrainers and it went from there. I started to think if I’m doing other people’s horses I may as well get my own. The first horse I trained was Creative Control. I got him as

a three-year-old to go eventing as it wasn’t going to work out for him on the Flat, but from the first day I sat on him I knew he would make into a good jumper. I was delighted when he finished second in a four-year-old maiden as my first runner in late 2020. It was just great even to get my name out there. I sold him to Donald McCain and thankfully he has already won twice over hurdles (right) for his new connections. Benefits Jeu was actually my first winner last November. Conor’s father had bought him

Lingstown wins battle to stop a wet wipeout HE AVY rain came close to wiping out last weekend’s action with Lingstown the only fixture to get the go-ahead. There were ominous signs on Friday when inspections were announced for Sunday at Ballyarthur and Nenagh in advance of forecast rain. Those fears materialised when both courses were found unfit for racing during the Sunday morning inspections. The fixtures have been swiftly rearranged for this Saturday, March 19, with the original entries standing. In the case of the North Tipperary Foxhounds, they will be hoping it is third time lucky for the fixture at Nenagh which has been called off twice as heavy rain left the course unraceable. All involved in staging the Lingstown fixture have to be credited for ploughing on in spite of the heavy rain which hit the track on Saturday and they were rewarded with a bumper crowd who made the most of the sunshine. Such was the turnout that racecards had sold out by the opening race. Weather interruptions are n o t ov e r, w i t h S a t u rd a y ’s County Down fixture at Loughbrickland waterlogged. successive blank weekend in the northern region after the cancellation of Kirkistown.

More at sales to follow in Hollow hoofprints

The return this week of crowds to the Cheltenham Festival also allows for the return of the Tattersalls Cheltenham Festival Sale which will take place in the winner’s enclosure after racing tomorrow evening. Once again, horses with point-to-point form dominate the catalogue and at the 2020 edition Gordon Elliott acquired Hollow Games, a leading hope for this year’s festival. The Beat Hollow gelding had won his point-to-point for Wexford siblings Ellen and James Doyle, and in advance of tomorrow’s sale Elliott’s team for next season has already been bolstered by the addition of another impressive point winner from Baltimore Stables. Demandrivingdouvan, an 11-length winner at Borris House ten days ago, has been bought privately by American trainer Keri Brion, who has a close association with the Doyle yard, on behalf of owners Rodman and Alice Moorhead. T h e B u t t o n w o o d Fa r m owners had Grade 1 success in

America with Baltimore Stables graduate The Mean Q u e e n b u t , u n l i k e h e r, Demandrivingdouvan is to stay in Ireland and will be trained on their behalf by Elliott.

Loggan Lady keeps in step with Singing Banjo

The Walsh family had hoped to be in Cheltenham contesting today’s Cross Country Chase with Singing Banjo. The 12-year-old was beaten a n e c k t h e r e i n N o v e m b e r, having blossomed into a star in this discipline when winning over the banks twice in a week at the Punchestown festival. The Cheltenham dream was dashed when rider Barry Walsh was injured. Although on the sidelines, he was at Lingstown on Sunday when his father John saddled his first winner over the banks in Loggan Lady. The daughter of Tinahely specialist Loggan Lass has already surpassed stablemate Singing Banjo, who was unable to get his head in front at Lingstown, and while they might watch today’s Cheltenham action from afar, the Walshes will hope compensation awaits if Loggan Lady can repeat their win last year in next month’s Ladies Cup.

to keep himself busy and ride him around, but Benefits Jeu wasn’t quiet enough to do that. It was nice to get my first winner for them. Superstylin was my second winner and my first at Lingstown, my local track. It’s only ten minutes down the road so it was brilliant to be able to get a winner there. I sold Superstylin for £50,000 to Suzy Smith, so things have been going well. I’m trying to juggle all that with playing football for Wexford. It’s not the easiest game to be in with Sunday

matches but I’ve been able to take a lot from football and transferred it to training horses. Playing at county level, nutrition is so important, managing what you eat and taking supplements. I try to bring that across to the horses too, which is something that maybe others might not focus on. The football training also shapes how I try to get the horses fit. What I find from training to get myself fit is you can do all the long-distance work you want but it’s the short sprints that are best at

getting my lungs opened up and I try to do that with the horses. There are those little things you can take from one to the other as I try to do it a bit differently. I found that horses going out on the gallop every day is not great for their mind and they can get a bit fed up. So because I’m here in Kilmore Quay, every Thursday I bring them into the sea for an easy day. Walking in the water is good for their minds and good for their muscles. We have an arena and a few fields around at home but I don’t have a gallop yet so the horses go down to the White Hole beach and then I use Johnny Berry’s for a good piece of work. Johnny has been a bit of a mentor to me. It’s a different approach but there are benefits to it. They are getting loaded into the lorry every day so they are getting used to it from an early age. It seems to be working so far, we’re not getting on too bad with it anyway. I have six in training at the minute, then I have three pretrainers and a few breakers. As things get busier maybe it will be harder to juggle pointers with football but it’s a problem I’d like to have as it will mean things are still going well. TOM BYRNE WAS TALKING TO EOGHAIN WARD

Earl Of Desmond has the home crowd cheering THE BIGGEST cheer at a sunsoaked Lingstown was reserved for Earl Of Desmond after his success in the Rostoonstown Stud winnersof-two contest, as the sevenyear-old is trained by Billy Codd, one of the landowners at the track. The Basil Holian-owned gelding came into the race following victories at Carrigarostig and Tinahely and there was no sign of that run coming to an end as he mastered the recent Farmacaffley winner Gunnery Officer on the run-in and pulling two lengths clear by the line. “It’s nice to have a winner on my own land,” Codd said. “He’s in great form and that’s his third straight win. He’ll probably run in the hunter chase in Cork at Easter now. He’s a lovely horse to have and Basil Holian is happy for him to stay in point-to-points and hunter chases.” That victory formed part of a double for in-form rider Jack Hendrick at his local fixture as he had earlier teamed up with his principal supporter Cormac D oyl e wh o u nle ash e d th e impressive Barry The Butcher in the Tattersalls NH four-yearold maiden. Out of a half-sister to the Cheltenham Festival winner C i t y Is l a n d w h o d e f e a t e d C ha m p t o c l a i m t h e 2 0 1 9 Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle, this Walk In The Park gelding made a race-winning move approaching the penultimate fence. From that point his rivals were playing catch-up and while the well-backed odds-on

favourite Croke Park did try to close on the run to the final fence, Barry The Butcher was not for catching and pulled out more to record a ten-length victory on his debut. Owned by the Monbeg Farm Racing Partnership, this eighth winner of the campaign for the Grange Stud resident stallion is now likely to be sold.

Alfie’s Princess was one of two winners on the card to be catalogued for tomorrow evening ’s Tattersalls Cheltenham Festival sale in the P r e s t b u r y P a r k w i n n e r ’s enclosure after she made a winning debut in the Padge Berry & Moortown Stud fiveyear-old mares’ maiden. Ma i r e B a n r i g h a n d A r d Abhainn are previous winners of this race who made the trip to the festival sale before achieving black-type success and the connections of Alfie’s Princess will have high expectations that a similar career awaits the Shirocco mare. Benefiting from the

customary ultra-patient Derek O’Connor waiting ride, the Ross O’Sullivan-trained Alfie’s Princess swept to the front b e f o re h o l d i n g o f f re c e nt Ballyvodock runner-up Penny Glory by three lengths in the colours of Galway owner John Murphy. She will be joined on the boat across the Irish Sea to the sales by Way Out after he got the better of Imonlysaying at the end of a protracted battle between the pair in the Slaney Food five- and six-year-old geldings’ maiden. The pair had raced side-byside from the exit of the back straight and remained tightly

matched up the run-in before Barry Stone’s mount edged into a narrow advantage in the dying strides to prevail by a head. The victory continued an excellent recent run of form for Jonathan Fogarty’s Cleariestown stable which had enjoyed success at Thurles three days previously with wide-margin winner over hurdles Salamanca Bay. The Ire-Well Pallets open over the banks course proved particularly eventful, with three horses, including odds-on favourite Vital Island, exiting at fence two, the timber rails. That denied

Richard O’Keeffe’s ten-yearold the opportunity to add to his four previous course successes so Loggan Lady is a new name on the trophy this year. T i m m y L o v e ’s m o u n t avoided all the drama as she produced an exhibition of j u m p i n g ov e r t h e u n i q u e obstacles to defeat Tech Talk by two lengths and in doing so she is now set to contest the Ladies Cup at next month’s Punchestown festival. “I used to love riding over the banks so it’s nice to have these horses to run in banks races. To get a winner over them is a bonus,” the winning handler

John Walsh said. “We wanted to give her some experience over the banks here before the Ladies Cup and Timmy [Love] said he couldn’t believe how well she jumped today.” Harley Dunne picked up a €3,000 bonus when he saddled and rode Good For Scope to success in the INHSC five-yearold-and-upwards maiden, a race confined to handlers who have trained ten winners or fewer. The recent Farmacaffley third made every inch of the running to defeat Jack Doyen by four lengths and he is now likely to be sold.

ENTRIES have a reference number to the horse’s last run, form figures (latest on right), owner, handler and exclusive rating (same scale as rules RPR). For penalised horses we suggest deducting half a point per pound (penalties not confirmed until race-day). Irish point-to-point entries are ordered as follows: 1 Horses whose owner has more than one entry, ordered alphabetically by: (a) owner, (b) horse. 2 Horses whose handler has more than one entry, ordered alphabetically by: (a) handler, (b) horse. 3 Remaining horses, ordered alphabetically. Abbreviations: B-brought down; b-baulked; C-carried out; d-disqualified; F-fell; P-pulled up; R-ran out; r-refused; S-slipped up; U-unseated rider.
